Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut Launches on PS4 October 13th

I’m Brian Fargo, CEO of inXile entertainment. Some of you may know me as the founder of Interplay Entertainment and the producer of the original Fallout. When we got the opportunity to talk to you several months back about Wasteland 2 coming to PS4, we leapt at the chance and were blown away with the support that we saw from PlayStation fans around the world.

Now I’m here to show you how far it’s come since then, and to talk about some of the ways we adapted the game to PS4. But before that, let’s take a look at the brand new Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut. Enjoy!

Wasteland 2 Director’s Cut Launches on PS4 October 13th

For those of you who haven’t heard of Wasteland 2, it’s a role-playing game where you build a squad of Desert Rangers in post-apocalyptic Arizona and California. We combined complex character building, an extremely reactive storyline and game world, and tactical, explosive turn-based combat to give you a deep, post-apocalyptic RPG experience.

Translating that PC-centric experience to consoles was a challenge with some people not believing we could take such a large and complex game to PS4, but we did it! We have always felt that it’s our mission to bring the best game possible for each platform without compromising. That means we took Wasteland 2 and looked at it as if it we were making a brand new game for consoles right from the start.

One of the biggest challenges was controls and user interface. Obviously we didn’t want to lose any of Wasteland 2’s complexity, so we knew we had to totally rework the game to play well on consoles. Instead of simply trying to port the controls over, we looked at it as if we were starting from the ground up. This also involved studying some other great turn-based games like XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Instead of a point-and-click interface as we did on PC, we switched to contextual and radial menus that let you quickly select actions and gave you the ability to change between combat targets using the shoulder buttons. The result is that playing Wasteland 2 on a controller is a faster and smoother experience.

Wasteland 2 Director's Cut

Of course, there are tons of changes we made to improve Wasteland 2 on PS4 as well. We did a complete graphics overhaul by moving to the Unity 5 game engine, including its new physically-based rendering system. That meant totally redoing all our character models, environments, and lighting to take proper advantage of next-generation hardware.

Some of the changes we made were more on the gameplay side. Our fans kept asking, so we delivered. Our character system got a big boost with Perks and Quirks. Quirks let you specify new personality traits that will have both advantages and disadvantages when you create your characters, and Perks let you pick special bonuses and new abilities as you level up throughout the game. On top of that, we added Precision Strikes which let you do targeted attacks on your enemies, crippling them and increasing your tactical options in fights to create some really chaotic combat encounters.

So, with that said, we are eagerly looking forward to our launch on October 13th, 2015. We hope you join us in the wasteland — it’ll be the true post-apocalyptic RPG you’ve been waiting for.

  • I was a backer of Wasteland 2 and got it on Steam, but my computer was too old to run it at all.

I wish the PS4 version could have been a stretch goal from the start. I would have taken that instead of the Steam version.

    • I’m in exactly the same situation, backed it and have the Steam version but unable to play it due to the system specs being too high when it was released. I heard with Unity 5 the required system specs may lowered a bit (unofficial), just have to wait and see.

    • What are your PC specs? Have you turned off various graphical options to improve performance?

  • Turn based games have never been my thing but this might be worth checking out.

  • My type game! 100% Retail purchase Guaranteed on Oct 13 :)

  • I’m so excited this is coming to PS4. It is also encouraging that you took a look at XCom as that was one of my favorite games in recent memory. Definitely getting this day one.

  • As yet another commenter that backed the game originally but couldn’t play it on my computer, this is awesome! Having to pay twice isn’t awesome, but ah well, I know how much work you guys put into this version so I really don’t mind. :)

  • This would so awesome on the go. Please consider bringing this to Vita. Vita needs these types of games.

  • This looks really good and I am glad it’s turn based. The graphics look great as well. Looks like a really deep RPG which is very welcome. Thanks for bringing it to the PS4!

  • The only must-buy game announced on PSBlog in AGES! Make sure you buy this guys, we need to send the message that we want more games like THIS, not junk like that Frozen game or that overly preachy and political Kitten game that could have been made by a 5 year old. There is zero curation of what goes on consoles anymore, its just a throw every piece of junk out there and hope someone buys it approach, so that when quality games like this are released they end up lost in the shuffle. We can’t let this happen.

I was a KS backer and the physical box level too, but since I can’t really bring myself to play PC games anymore, the PS4 version is a dream come true.

    • I super hyped for this!

      Input control PLEASE BE GOOD.

No keyboard here & obviously, if the transition to a controller is intuitive & fun… Can’t wait!

  • Like @ElektroDragon, I backed this on Kickstarter but I’m so sick of PC gaming (I sit at a computer all day at work) I never really played it much, and when I heard it was coming to PS4 I dropped it completely because I knew it’d be a better experience on PS4.

Day 1 purchase for me. Can’t wait!

  • I’m a backer from the original Kickstarter so I’ll be playing this on PC, but I am SUPER HAPPY it’s coming to PS4. I’m really glad more people will have a chance to play this amazing game! :)

  • Hopefully it has a fun platinum trophy that makes you want to do everything in the game to get it.

  • Its so awesome this is getting a physical release! cant wait

  • Looks amazing! I remeber back in 1989 when I played the first one on my C64!
And +25 years later it´s gonna rock on my PS4!

  • I’m a huge fan of rpgs, so i’ll be looking into this. Its just unfortunate that it releases the same day as Dragon Quest Heroes and a week before Tales of Zesteria, both of which i plan to get.

I’ll sadly have to wait awhile before i get this game. I wish more games released in the summer instead of packing together in October and November. :(

  • General “Snake”!? “Jean Rambeau”!?
    SOLD!! xD ;)

  • I think I’m actually more excited to play this than Fallout 4. This is gonna be epic. Day 1 buy for me baby. That price point at retail is a sweet spot too. Amazing game with massive amounts of replayability. :D

  • Looking forward to it.

  • Worth the 25 year wait, even on the current “vanilla” version. If any of you have not played the original 2 Fallouts, not only is this the spiritual predecessor to those games(well the original Wasteland at any rate), but you could argue that THIS is what Fallout 3 would have been like, had the franchise not been sold to Bethesda.

  • You people need to buy games like this, Original Sin, Darkest Dungeon… if you want to show devs there’s actually a market for proper classic style RPGs on consoles and not just only the action/RPG hybrids you’ve mostly been getting.

  • Super psyched for this one! Had no idea it was launching so soon.

  • KS collector’s edition backer here. I’m going to buy it again on PS4! Looking forward to Original Sin, too.

  • I wasn’t a backer but I do believe (seeing how many contributed and couldn’t even enjoy the game) that they should get some discount on a rebuy or something. Hopefully there will be a digital version as I’m trying to go completely digital, if possible, for my PS4.

  • I’m a huge fan of turn based RPGs. Sadly, as I’m sure you’re aware, they’re getting to be few & far between on consoles anymore (not counting the current glut of awful JRPGs with underdressed, underage girls). I never could get into gaming on my computer & stick with playing on console.

With all that said & checking the game out online, I’ve preordered W2. My question is if this sells well, do you think you might consider bringing Torment & Bard’s Tale 4 to consoles?

Thanks for bringing this over. Looking forward to getting into it in a few weeks! :)

  • This looks cool, might give it a go!!’

  • What’s the price point here? We looking at $20, $60, somewhere in between?

  • Why not Vita too?

  • Will this be on PS Store for digital purchase?

  • Does anyone know when it’ll be available to purchase from the playstation store?

  • I pre-ordered this at Amazon, but I am leaning toward digital after installing a 2TB HD in my P4. :)
