PS4 System Software Update 3.00 Out 9/30, Take a Visual Tour

The 3.00 system software update on PS4, codename: Kenshin, will be available to download starting tomorrow, September 30th. We want to extend our sincere thanks to everyone that participated in the beta. I want you to all know that we’ve listened. Your feedback made this system software update even better.

PS4 System Software Update 3.0

There are a lot of changes in this update, from entirely new features to UI enhancements. While we detailed its key features earlier this month, we wanted to give a visual tour of our favorite new additions. This update is focused on creating new ways to connect with friends and players around the world, expanding the social capabilities of the system even further.

Sharing video clips to Twitter: Now it’s easy to share video clips to Twitter directly from your PS4. You’ll see a new icon on the Upload Video Clip menu, nestled between Facebook and YouTube. Maximum video length is 10 seconds, though you’ll have the ability to trim longer clips. Don’t forget — you can double tap the Share button to start recording a video, and press it again to stop.

PlayStation Plus: We’ve made a dedicated section for PlayStation Plus, which you can access by clicking the big Plus icon on the top left corner of your PS4 home screen. Once there you can easily manage your membership, see the monthly free games to download, deals for PS Plus members, and all of the games you’ve redeemed through PS Plus on PS4.

YouTube live: You’ll see a new icon for YouTube on the Broadcast Gameplay Screen, accessible after hitting the Share button. Now you can live stream directly from your PS4 to YouTube. Livestreams will be viewable across YouTube.

PNG Screenshots: If you’d like your game screenshots to be in a higher quality format, you can now select PNG instead of JPEG. To access, press Share > Share Settings > Screenshot Settings > Image Format.

Events: A new hub for Events has been added to PS4, accessible from the home screen. This will give you an overview of activities taking place in the games you play most, as well as official broadcasts. For instance, here’s an in-game racing event taking place in Project Cars, which you can register for directly from the Events hub.

Improvements to Messages and Favorite Groups: We’ve improved Messages by making it easier to access groups of people you chat and play games with frequently. Once you’re added to or create a group, you’ll see the online status for friends, what games they are playing, and the option to message or chat in party all in one spot. When you add or create a new favorite group, they’ll appear in your Friends app under Favorite Groups for quick access. For example, you can see we have favorite groups for Call of Duty, Rocket League, and Destiny.

Communities: PS4 users will have the ability to create communities based around shared interests, like games, genres, and more. Communities include a message board with general discussion, screenshots shared by players, and the ability to join parties / games.

Stickers: From the PS4 system’s Messages app, you’ll see a new option for Stickers. The 3.00 update will contain stickers themed around Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Knack, LittleBigPlanet 3, Resogun, and more. Instead of typing out a message, just send a sticker — like Drake looking at a watch, asking you to wait a minute.”

PS4 System Software Update 3.0

We’re constantly striving to make PS4 even better, and appreciate all the feedback! If you would like to submit an idea on how to improve the PlayStation experience, share it here. We will continue to make PS4 the best place to play.

We hope you enjoy the Kenshin update, and let us know what you think in the comments below!

  • Are there any plans to fully support 3rd party Bluetooth remotes like the harmony smart control?

  • Are these other features going to be included?

-Now Playing / What’s New — The Now Playing screen will display even more information about what your friends are doing, and you’ll be able to quickly jump into a game, party, request a screen share, or get sent to the PS Store to buy the game your friend is playing – further enhancing the social relationship with your friends online.

-Live from PlayStation — We’ve improved the Live From PlayStation app, making it easier to view popular trending broadcasts in real time.

-Request to watch gameplay — Want to view a friend’s gameplay session? Now you can send a ‘Request to Watch’ notification to a player.

    • These were there in the Beta, so I assume they will be there in the full release. There are a ton of additions and changes (big and small). It would take them lot of effort to lay them all out in a blog post. Some of the new features I suspect they will just let people discover for themselves.

  • Great update Sony. Is there anyway you can add voice chat like it was on PS3. Some of us have family members that don’t live near by a form of video chat would be awesome. Even Skype would work, just any way to be able to see our family members across the nation through the PS4 would be awesome. We used this feature a lot on the PS3.

  • Here’s the biggest problems with ps4! No hdmi 2.0 support, option to keep on 1080p at 24fps to on (PS3 even has option) oh and no update to use driving force gt and other Logitech steering wheels I paid an insane amount of money for. Not having the options to run games at 4K if you have the tv to do it is the main reason this generation of gaming has been outdated from the start, I’ve had every ps system from day one, moving on to pc so I can play games at 4K at 60fps till option is available maybe on ps5 in a billion years good bye

    • games can’t run in 4k and 60fps on the ps4 because the hardware is not powerful enough. even if you could select the option to put it on 4k it would only upscale it. if the ps4 could do 4k 60fps the system would not cost 400 dollars.

    • Ok goodbye. We don’t care.

    • keep trolling trolling trolling trolling, keep trolling trolling trolling trolling trolling

    • About the wheel support, you have to ask Logitech.
And about the 4k thing, I don’t know if you are serious (you need to see how much your PC and the PS4 cost), the only thing that I can see they do is upscaling to 4k.

  • It sounds good but I’ll wait and see and hope for the best or at least something reasonably close.
This is a positive comment. :)

  • I am happy to learn that 3.0 will have full release tomorrow. I can start benefiting from the new social features with my actual PSN friends (none of whom were in Beta with me).

I did make use of many of the 3.0 features available in the Beta including up to 10 second video clips to Twitter, much needed increased PS+ Cloud Storage (from 1GB to 10GB), ability to comment on Activity feed, Create / Use Communities, and creating a number of Friend Groups to organize friends into different gaming tastes (so Destiny friends, Helldivers friends, etc)

I saw some whiners looking down on this update without having even tried it, but make no mistake these are all smart and meaningful additions and I have been looking forward to all my friends getting 3.0 so we can all benefit from these additions together.

  • JPG support / photo gallery?? CD player??

  • Please allow us to remap controller FOR EACH APPLICATION!

  • this surely is the most requested feature with every post on an upcoming software update, codename IDGAF! But hey, go ahead and add mine to the list

    PSN NAME CHANGE!!!

  • yeah we need friend notifications along with on and offline status. I figured we’d get friend notifications with the favorites group thing and that hint in one of the commercials back long ago lo and behold still nothing. I don’t see what’s taking so long but Playstation please step it up. It’s about to be year 2 and we are missing PS3 features I mean geez. I know it’s a lot to tack on but please bring these features

  • I find it offensive that so many comments are being blocked here…. americans have died for our right to free speech…. please stop with this communist, anti-democratic and anti-american censorship nonsense.

    Thank you.

    • WOW,,,just WOW…yes Im sure when free speech was a concern it wasnt for whiny internet users to complain about gaming console features

  • External hdd support

  • Still waiting for Skype…

    • Since Microsoft bought Skype, you will be waiting a LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG time. Sony was supposed to put another video service (ooVoo), but not sure what happened to that.

    • Skype is on Android and other non-Microsoft products. Why wouldn’t it be on PlayStation?

  • Good news. Fw ran pretty smoothly during the beta. I like the communities, but hopefully Sony added a search-function.
Especially glad with the favorite groups btw, makes it a lot easier to socialise with specific friends.

  • Are we ever going to get friend online notifications? I can’t imagine it’s that hard considering it was on the PS3 for almost 10 years.

    • This is so ridiculous. This has been a top requested feature according to sonys own firmware website since the console released and it’s still not available. With favorite groups it’s an absolute no brained. ADD THIS FUNCTIONALITY SONY ITS EXCULSION IS UNACCEPTABLE

  • Really like the community stuff, can’t wait to try it out. Have to agree with the two biggest “wants” from everyone on here. Folders and the ability to change my psn name.

  • 1.”[Friend] is online/offline/busy/away” notifications

    2. Invisible/Visible online gaming

    3. Video chat

    4. Music visualizer (like PS3 had)

    5. Photo viewer/slideshow (like PS3 had)

    6. Video player w/ 2x, 5x, 10x, 20x etc fast forward & rewind and slow forward/rewind using analog + etc (like PS3 had)

    7. Custom wallpapers (using screenshots as backgrounds. Allowing people to make their own like PS3 did would be nice too.)

    8. Quick search by increments of 30. Moves down friends list by tapping [Right] on the d-pad. Speed up if held. (I have 300+ friends). Should also work for video clips & photos.

    9. Access to PSN Avatars purchased and purchaseable on PS3

    10. Access to PS1 & PS2 Classics bought/purchaseable on PS3 (I want my Marvel Vs Capcom 2 back please)

    11. Transparent home screen when messaging during gaming, viewing photos, listening to music, or viewing a video (like PS3 had). In online gaming, awareness is crucial. Sending a quick message should not visually and audibly remove you from the game.

    12. Custom Folders. For games, photos, video clips, and music* (like PS3 had)

    • Other then the PS Plus add on this Update is worthless!

Stick with your ps3 if its so much better!

    • #PS3DidItBetter –
We shouldn’t have to go backwards. The evolution of a system should do things better! Not remove the features completely! The only improvements made to the PS4 (outside of visuals and memory) are the one’s made to help advertise the system via free advertising (streaming) to increase sales. Where are the features made for the gamers???

      I’ll also add…

      13. Translucent notification boxes.
Less screen obstruction during gaming and streaming. (#PS3DidItBetter)

      14. 1080p video captures.

      15. BRING BACK THE USB MUSIC PLAYER.
Wasn’t an app. Light on the systems ram/memory. Ran tandem with other apps in the background. Worked seamlessly without lag or delay. A better MP3 player than the Media player IN EVERY WAY.

      16. Multi-message system.
I should not be forced to have a “Group Chat” every time I send out a mass message, and copying and pasting a message more than 3 times (let alone 30+ times) is not a feasible alternative. (#PS3DidItBetter)

      17. Hide Current Activity.
Not everyone wants ALL of their friends to know they’re ‘IN THE STRIP CLUB’ on GTA, playing ONECHANBARA, or playing Dora’s Amazing Pony Adventures. Ijs…

  • Let us change our PSN ID names! LET US CHANGE OUR PLAYSTATION NETWORK IDENTIFICATION USERNAMES!

  • Would love if we can change your PSN names and also see one or friends are online and off-line whenever they sign in or off!

  • WHERE IS THE VITA CONTENT MANAGER!!!

  • Seems like a good update. I think the Playstation mobile app could use a big update and it would be nice to do remote play on something other than a Vita or Experia devices. Otherwise keep up the good work.

  • Almost to note if anyone hasn’t noticed the PlayStation Blog is now Mobile friendly again and now including comment’s and way’s to reply to the post and or other comment’s. Today is such a great day to be a PlayStation Gamer. So excited to test out Firmware 3.00 on my PS4.

  • people should forget about backwards compatibility IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. however, i do want to see CD support, xbox 360 style invitation system, better blutooth support, be able to switch party from private to open and vice versa, and external hard drive support. i

  • I think it’s Kinda Funny that we still can’t change our PSN names

  • If you want to play PS3 games then buy a PS3 FFS. My god, so many whiny people on here.

Keep the great updates coming Sony. Well done.

    • Imagine buying a new phone or computer and having to rebuy all your old apps because none of the old stuff works. Backwards compatability is essential with Windows, Android, and iPhone. Virtual Console is very popular on Nintendo systems because many of those games can’t be easily bought.

  • Will the ability to request a livestream of a friend’s game session in progress still be in this update? This was a feature listed among the the “key features” and one that I was most looking forward to, sadly I did not get into the beta this time :-(

  • My top requested features:
    1. Added Dashboard Customisation (ex, Pin app to Dashboard, Create Folder, Custom Wallpaper..)
    2. Addition of Multi windows, allowing to watch Youtube or PS Live while playing game.
    3. A faster and simplified party making and friend related info without living the game.
    4. Allowing to customise the track pad for shortcuts in dashboard (ex, swipe left to lunch Spotify..)
    5. More informative notification related to friends.
    6. A more robust multitasking menu.
    7. Ability to monitor how long a game have been played.
    8. Change status to Online/Away/Offline…
    9. Full support for external HDD
    10. A cute little calendar that indicates games release date and important date of PS related events.
    11. Battery, date status in dashboard.
    12. High Quality Screenshot.
    13. Automatic Trophy Sync

  • There’s really only one feature I care about, and it still doesn’t seem to have been implemented: a games folder. I have to scroll so much to get through all of my games that I feel like I’m on a road trip. It is completely asinine not to be able to group similar items and it needs to change now.

  • Could you please add DTS support to the PS4 Media Player.

  • Still waiting for external HD support,is that ever coming?

    • wouldn’t count on it, PS offers the ability to upgrade the hard drive and its as easy and putting a NES cartridge into a NES, 2TB hard drives are less than $100, external drives are the same price as internal give or take a few bucks. People that need more than 2TB are a small percent of overall gamers so adding a feature specifically for a small percent usually never happens

  • My comment did not appear, so here we go again. Will the following features that were promised for the beta still be in the update? I wasn’t able to get into the beta so I’d appreciate some confirmation (REALLY looking forward to the second feature especially):

“Live from PlayStation — We’ve improved the Live From PlayStation app, making it easier to view popular trending broadcasts in real time.”

“Request to watch gameplay — Want to view a friend’s gameplay session? Now you can send a ‘Request to Watch’ notification to a player. (Updated text)”

  • In agreement with appearing offline.

Also will this update do away with that annoying Discover message? I know how to use rest mode and completely power down my PS4…I don’t need a message about it lol.

  • What about changing your PSN ID? I want to change mine so bad but I don’t want to lose my trophies and data. I heard that one of the reasons this isn’t possible is because you guys don’t want trolls abusing it. Well, what about an option to change is once every year?

  • One last thing. As the Twitch App is coming to ALL THREE in-market PlayStation Platforms and games are still coming out on PS3, we have evidence that Sony still considers the PS3 to be “alive” and deserving of system updates. So can we PLEASE get the Accessibility feature available on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita/PS TV on PS3 as well? The ability to remap the buttons at system level is a fantastic and much needed feature and it should be available on ALL existing PlayStation platforms. This is all that I ask.

  • Great update – really looking forward to the new features.
Would still like to see some sort of mode where I can play while remaining invisible to those on my friends list (don’t need people at work seeing I’m playing games after calling in sick). I would also like a search function for my trophy list. Sometimes I want to check a specific game and it’s a pain to scroll through all the other games I played to check on some trophy from 2-3 years ago.

  • Well comments are broken.

Other then a social media heavy update, which let us be honest is free marketing for Sony PlayStation, and I have no problems with it if it is used, and it seems to be. I’ll say thank you for not posting the update on the same day the store updates. Seriously, thank you.

  • OMGG … this is literally the best post i have ever seen since Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last Guardian announcement! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK! BASED SONY!
Now anonunce Jak 4 and Sly Cooper 5 pretty please :D !!!

  • Still no Custom Folders? :(

  • All these features are nice. The Real features I’m looking for are: – Can we organize our games on the xmb?
    – Can we create folders?
    – Can we add and external hard drive to store and run games?
    – PSN Name Change feature?

    • Totally Agree

    • I have a 2tb hdd installed on mine because I like having access to the games as they come out and install most PS+ games each month. Most triple A games are 40 plus GB if your like some people maybe small percentage but still large amount. Taking ps4 apart to swap a hdd flash it with update re-download games to bigger hdd can take a load of time especially with ISP’s in America throttling your 150 to 200gb a month bandwidth. If Sony would offer external HDD support it would help extend the capacity to 8th and yeah it would slow load times for games on that hdd but I for one would hate to have to wait more than a month re-downloadING my catalog of games because of my ISP none unlimited bandwidth.

    • If I’m installing 50 gb Games on my hard drive… Why do i need the damn disc inside my console? So when i remote play i can’t change the damn disc! Annoying!

  • Year : 2015 , PS4 and X1 are already current Gen , the next Software Update for Ps4 is 3.0 and we still cant change our usernames ?
    PLS SONY MAKE IT HAPPEN

  • png screen shots and twitter vids are two great ones for me.

  • Is the USB music player coming back? It was missing in the latest beta, and the media player is extremely poor with music playback.

  • ABOUT TIME !!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!

    • From a “Real Gamer” good job Sony keep up the good work. Can’t wait to use these new features and see what’s coming next.

  • Pretty cool update. Only one thing I still really want though and have wanted for years: name changing.

  • WE NEED EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE SUPPORT!!!!!! shaking my head

  • #1 Name changes. That is what everybody wants. Can we petition Obama for this?

    • How much would you be willing to pay for it?

I bet if a bunch of people contact Sony and say “I”ll pay X amount to change my name”

Hell as long as they give the first name change for free, they could charge $20-50 dollars.

    • I believe it’s one of Trump’s campaign promises.

  • Nice additions, looking forward to creating communities. Will these be invite only or can we make them open to everyone?

In the future I would like to see the events more connected with the communities. Let’s say I’m a member of a community for a specific game, if I register for an event on that game, it would be nice if the other members of my community could see that I want to participate.

Having the ability to create our own community events where players can register in advance would also be very nice. This could be a great addition for all the competitive players out there. Organising matches is not always an easy thing to do and I think this would be a great tool if we could directly challenge other communities (teams) when creating our events.

    Have a nice day everyone!

  • With the beta testing going on with the new software updates….has any one ever thought of coming up with a way so us ps4 users can play games like call of duty with our friends who have a PS3? I mean after all it is still the same psn network so y hasn’t this happened yet? Should be real easy to do

  • i’m digging the whole 10 gb ps plus upload thingy but what am disappointed that the ps1/ps2 emulation rumor wasnt true.the other box is doing it with their last console even though their architecture was kind of different too.honestly i dont care about all these social stuff, sony.dont get me wrong its nice for those who are in to this type of thing.

    but what about cd support
    native mp4 support
native mp3 support, the ability to copy our music in the hard drive
    again ps1/ps2 emulation
    better folders
cross firmware update notification (meaning,if you are on ps4,it will alert you on a firmware update for the ps3 or vita)
    local weather application

papajohns application …this one is a joke LOL

  • software features are great but the biggest problems we have today on PSN is your shoddy back-end network infrastructure. we need better CDN(content delivery networks) so people downloading games can do so in a reasonable time frame. we are paying lot’s of money in PS+ fees and aren’t seeing any improvement in this area.

    #BetterPSN

    • Better? I can download a game that is over 20gb in under an hour on the ps4. Seems pretty good to me. Maybe try a hard line connection, or contact your ISP?
