Fan-Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

Hello everyone. As we continue our celebration of the PlayStation 20th anniversary, we want to take a look back at the heritage that helped propel us to the brand that we are today. PlayStation 2 holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers who have fond memories of playing some of the biggest franchises in gaming.

PS2 remains the best-selling console of all time, thanks in part to the revolutionary tech built into the box, such as support for the DVD format for games and movies, a powerful graphics processor, and specialized chips for particle effects and physics. Above and beyond the technical innovations that made PS2 stand apart is the huge catalog of amazing and much loved games, such as Dark Cloud, Twisted Metal: Black, and the PS2-era classic Grand Theft Auto games, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, just to name a few.

Fan-Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

To celebrate our PS2 heritage, I’m excited to announce that starting tomorrow, you will be able to purchase and play PS2 games on your PS4 via PlayStation Store in the Americas and Europe.

We are getting things started with a bang by launching with eight fan favorites tomorrow:

  • Dark Cloud — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
  • Rogue Galaxy — $14.99

Having these titles available on PS4 is already incredibly exciting for us, but we did not stop there. We have brought these titles forward to meet today’s gaming standards by adding Trophy support! Each title’s Trophy set has been carefully developed in conjunction with feedback from the original creators to be sure that they capture the spirit and feeling of each game.

Also, you will be able to experience all of these PS2 games like never before — in up-rendered 1080p with the features you expect from a PS4 game including Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support for game manuals with PlayStation Vita or PlayStation App.

And if you’re attending PlayStation Experience in San Francisco this weekend, you’ll be able to play these PS2 games on PS4 at the show floor:

  • Dark Cloud
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
  • PaRappa the Rapper 2 (coming soon)
  • Rogue Galaxy
  • The King of Fighters 2000 (coming soon)
  • The Mark of Kri
  • War of the Monsters

We will be working tirelessly to bring you your favorite PS2 games with new releases on a regular basis, and we hope you love playing PS2 games on PS4 as much as we did making them! So tell us, what PS2 games do you want to play on your PS4?

Long live PlayStation!

  • I’d love to see Ape Escape get some much needed love with 2 & 3 on there with trophies. I’d be a very, very happy man it that happened.

  • Would absolutely love to see the .hack// series of 4 games and the .hack//GU trilogy to be available on psn! These games are so hard to find and so expensive :(

  • Awesome games, and AWESOME that we can stream+shareplay these games too!!!

But we still need SOCOM guys…Socom 2..an HD remake even better, it was voted for so many times, please make it happen and SEE those 10,000 SOCOM 2 HD VOTES turn into 100x as many copies sold!!

For every SOCOM fan that voted to bring it back numerous times on the PS BLOG and SHARE BLOG, we have at least 20 socom friends / teammates that will definitely buy it DAY 1 too…but arent on social media! I personally have 100+ friends / old teammates on my PSN that would buy SOCOM..heck, they’ll buy a ps4 only IF they see a *classic* Socom again with all the amazing features those original games had.

  • This is a kick butt scoop. I would sure like to see these PS2 to PS4 games also be released on PS3 as PS2 classics as well. You know, don’t leave the PS3’s PS2 classics section behind.

  • Yet once again Sony making us buy the games we already own. How about something like Xbox where if you have the disk you put it in to verify you own it and boom it starts downloading. How about you do something for your fans that is not taking our money for the same game over and over again. I keep supporting Sony to friends on XB1 but it is getting more difficult when you keep doing stuff like this.

    • “Once again”?

The problem with this entire decision is that it is something new – PS1 games have worked on everything Sony has ever released and it would be natural to expect something similar with PS2 classics. No-one would complain much if they simply allowed you to pay a small upgrade fee, even – given that these games have gotten additional features and a least trophies required some actual developing effort.

PS Now, as far as I’m concerned, has nothing to do with backwards compatibility.

  • I want my PSOne games that I have on PSN already. Might as well emulate PSP too.

Trophy support for something like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night would be amazing.

  • Since you asked, I´d like Dragon Quest VIII.

  • I want to play –MY– PS2 games on my PS4.

Release the emulator so that we can play our physical PS2 games in SD as a stop-gap until the enhanced versions (if applicable) are created. Also, rework the cross-buy feature to unlock digital purchases from PS3 on PS4.

  • Shadow Hearts please!!!

  • While cool, I think $15 is high. I’m sure there are some games that would make me break down and spend it, but it’s hard to imagine.

  • Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga

They were already PS2 Classics on PS3. I bought them there. I also own them physically on PS2. But I will still buy them again on PS4. Please and thank you. Also the other SMT games on there too I guess.

  • Without cross buy I have no intention of supporting this by repurchasing games I already own and that Sony has records of me purchasing on the PSN.

  • “what PS2 games do you want to play on your PS4?” Since your emulating them, I’d like my PS2 disks to play on PS4 … I’d like people who bought some of these titles on PS3 to have them free on PS4. I hope better future hope is announced tomorrow =/

  • Hi Shu! Wow, this is HUGE.

The PS2 classics I’d like to see most on PS4 are:
    + Silent Hill 2
+ Twisted Metal: Black <– you got it!
    + NBA Street Vol. 2
    + Capcom Classics V1 (SFII!)
Would really like to have a nice arcade port of Street Fighter II available on PS4. Perhaps as an Easter egg in SFV?

Also, it would be nice to start receiving these PS2 classics free with PS+. Maybe a couple a month? :-D

  • Prices are to high

  • Mark of Kri :) I remember it looking like a Disney movie, wow, nostalgia is a hell of a drug. I’m still buying it.

  • I already own Twisted Metal Black classic on PS3. Will it unlock for me on PS4? You can’t pretend to charge me for something I already own, and don’t tell me this is like some different version, it’s the same code you put into the emulator, same content except for the trophy support.

  • If i can get the sly cooper series and even NFL street and maybe true crime NYC i would be happy this is a huge announcement and a big step forward

  • I’d like to play whatever PS2 classic you want to release… on my Playstation Vita. Natively, without using it as a glorified remote play device. If that ever happens, you’ll have my money~.

  • I love would see Star Wars Battlefront 1&2, Mercenaries, destroy all humans 1&2, the punisher, Burnout 3 takedown and Burnout revenge .

  • I would like to see:

    The King of Fighters XI

    The King of Fighters 2002

    Valkyrie Profile 2

KOF Maximum Impact 2 (KOF 2006)

    Persona series

    Grandia III

    Wild ARMs 3, 4, & 5

    KOF Maximum Impact Regulation A

  • Persona 3 e 4, The Warriors, Bully, Prince of Persia Trilogy, Splinter Cell… so many games.

  • I’d love to see the transformers armada game get this treatment

  • What a nice surprise, though the pricing seems a tad high. Gradius V please!

  • A cool idea but I can see now that it will be mishandled. These games are being run on emulation, yet the only way you will let us play them is if we buy them off the playstation store. This is great for people that never got to play them originally. But you should also let us run them off the original PS2 disks if we own them. You shouldn’t punish long time supporters. Maybe I’m wrong, but this feels just like a money grab to force people to rebuy games they already own. Nintendo and Microsoft both allow for limited disk based backwards compatibility and Sony should too.

  • GOD HAND!!!

  • All PS2 games and existing PS2 Classics on PS3.

  • Ridge Racer V, Ecco Defender of the Future, SSX 3, Gran Turismo 4, Wipeout Fusion, WRC Rally Evolved, Tenchu Wrath of Heaven, Shinobi, Ace Combat 4 & 5, Onimusha 1 & 2, Taito Legends 1 &2, Midway Arcade Treasures 1& 2, Atari Anthology, SNK Classics Collection, Capcom Classics Collection 1 & 2, Sega Ages Collection.

  • OMG i loved Dark Cloud! they should make a new one for the PS4

  • Well, i guess i’ll finally own War of the Monsters after all these years. Although i’m really bummed i can’t use my 40+ PS2 games on my PS4 and my fat PS3 has a dead disc lense.

  • Price is a little too steep. Would’ve preferred a system similar to what Nintendo did. Let us pop in our original PS2 discs, and give the option to upgrade to the new digital versions for like a $1 or something.

  • No disc support/upgrade process for PS2 classics is a let down.
Also where is PS1? After all those years they finally put out Mega Man Legends on PSN and it’s a shame I can’t play it on a current gen console.

    My PS2 wishlist is…
    -Viewtiful Joe
    -Katamari Damacy
    -We Love Katamari
    -Phantasy Star Universe
    -Sonic Heroes

  • Some cool games to add would be Ty the tasmanian Tiger, jak X (with online support would be awesome), and Tak 1.

  • So I take it I can’t pop in my PS2 discs into my PS4 and play them for no additional cost?

    • That wouldn’t make them money right now. I can’t believe they are going to try to sell the same PS2 classics they sold to PS3 owners off PSN again.

  • ill be picking up all 3 GTA’s tomorrow!!! Very happy indeed

  • I love the idea of old PS2 games on ps4 I would love to see.

    Legacy of Kain series
    Blood Omen
    Soul Reaver

    • OMG Yes! Somehow I missed these back in the day. Would love to get another chance to play them. Darksiders 1 & 2 is the closest thing we have right now…

  • $15 a bit too much IMHO.
Hopefully some of these games will be up on the PS Plus free games in the upcoming months.

  • Are we going to start getting ps2 games on ps +

  • I think some games you guys should keep in mind is Star Wars battlefront 2,Spider man 2,Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3,Sly 3 Honor Among Thieves,Crash Tag Team Racing,X-men Legends 2 Apocalypse,Marvel Ultimate Allience,Dragon Quest VIII,Prince of Persia the Two Thrones, & Dragon Ball Z Budokai 2.

    • Spider-man 2 was one of the earlier good open-world games. I had so many hours in that game!! X- men Legends 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time.

  • My most requested games at the moment are:
    Primal
    24: The Game
Lord of The Ring Two Towers and Return of the King :) THX Sony

  • Give Square Enix whatever it takes to do Dragon Quest VIII and Valkyrie Profile 2.

  • I need Xenosaga 1-3 and Final Fantasy XII.

  • I would love to see the Onimusha games.

    Maybe Freekstyle too :3

  • Sickening that you look at the competition and instead of even adding the PS2 classics you bought on PS3/PSN your corporation is going this route. Instead of adding BC, you are saying to your customers (as the market leader) that you are offering them the opportunity to buy the games that already bought twice.

Absolutely anti-gamer and as the industry leader you appear to bend over backwards to make money off of products you already sold.

    -PS4, Vita, PS3, PS2 and PS1 owner

    • Step down off your high-horse, Jeezus. Same goes for the other cheapskates littering this thread with their selfish complaining. Yes, we get it. You either bought the original PS2 discs, or remastered PS3 versions (without trophies, I might add). I bought some too, and yet I’m happy to pony up for some of the classics (Shadow of Colussus, please) if that means I can experience them all over again in hi-def with trophy support in 2015. Bringing upscaled PS2 games to the PS4 is no small feat, especially with full capability (screenshots, share play, etc.). There is nothing anti-gamer about asking you to support the work that went into creating these new versions.

  • I would love to be able to play Wild Arms 3/4/5/AC:F, the entire .Hack and .Hack GU series, the Xenosaga triology, and both Champions of Norrath titles!

  • Prices are silly high. Get Persona 4 on it for a few euros and i’m sold. Fantavision too. Stop gouging your fans Sony.

  • SOCOM II: US NAVY SEALs w/ Online MP

  • Perfect!

I hope you guys can get a lot of the Shin Megami Tensei games up as well! And the dot hack series. If CC2 can’t make a remastered collection for them, this would be the best option to see them make a triumphant return to consoles and the minds of gamers.

  • I have too many games visible in the windshield to be playing/paying for games I can see in the rear view mirror.

    Maybe…
    – SOCOM
    – Add these games to PlayStation Now
    – Allow me to access these games digitally, if I own the game physically

  • Those are fan favorites???Jesus!!!!!GTA seris is nice but where is Onimusha Series,Black or GT4??I’d love to see Samurai Shodown Anthology since it’s impossible to buy it……btw those prices are are too crazy i’m sorry it’s not worth it!!
