Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power Launches December 22nd on PS4

Hey everyone! Kai from Frozenbyte here with some great news. We’ve managed to hit the Christmas launch window with Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power, and it’ll be available digitally for PS4 on December 22nd!

The third game of the series has been renewed quite a lot and as you may have heard, Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power has full 3D gameplay.

Trine 3 on PS4

Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power is a 3D platforming game set in a beautiful fantasy world of vivid colors, and is also a mixture of puzzles, adventure, and action. You’re playing with three distinct characters: a Wizard specialized in conjuring boxes and levitation, a stout-hearted Knight with powerful fighting abilities, and an elusive Thief who excels at fighting from afar with her bow and overcoming obstacles with her grappling hook. Each character will help you in different ways on your and action-packed journey.

The story starts off with the Heroes growing tired of their duties. They try to return their extraordinary gifts to the Artifact called Trine, and so they meddle with powers beyond their understanding: Trine shatters and a heartless ancient sorcerer escapes. With only a broken artifact to guide them, the heroes must try and repair the damage they’ve caused… or the damage that might yet be done.

Trine 3 has 28 Trophies including a Platinum, so you’ll have a good bit of challenge trying to complete them all.

We know there’s still a number of 3D TV owners out there, so we’ve continued to support stereoscopic 3D with Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power. And if you haven’t tried any of the Trine games in stereo 3D yet, now’s a good time to start.

Trine 3 includes…

  • A beautiful 3D fantasy world with seven story-driven chapters and 11 puzzle-solving, skill-focused Lost Pages.
  • Three playable characters: Pontius the Knight, Zoya the Thief, and Amadeus the Wizard, each with his or her own skills and unique abilities.
  • Share a couch! Local co-op multiplayer support for up to three players.
  • Full HD 1080p with 60 frames per second.
  • Support for Stereoscopic 3D (720p).
  • Mesmerizing soundtrack by award-winning composer Ari Pulkkinen.
  • Full language support for English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, and Brazilian-Portuguese, and subtitle support for Italian, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Simplified Chinese, and Finnish.

One thing that I’d like to be upfront about is that Trine 3 focuses on local co-op and will not include online multiplayer. We hope that you’ll still enjoy playing couch co-op!

  • Awesome. Trine 2 was amazing. What about the price?

  • Thanks for continuing the support of the 3D tech. After all the hype Sony did a while ago, not many games support it nowadays. I got a big 3DTV for it and that investment is mostly wasted now. Glad to have these gems where I can enjoy it again!
Also, Thanks for stating the supported languages! I have a gilfriend that only speaks portuguese, and that info is not easy to find, definitely a big plus for a coop game. And also for being clear and upfront about the couch coop thing. This was a super informative post, and saved me a lot of research :D

I’m a fan, keep up the good work!

    • Thanks! Glad you like the stereoscopic 3D and it’s definitely interesting to try the game with the different language voice-overs :)

    • 3D was a fad that most should have known wasnt going to last long.

    • Stereo 3D gaming is amazing… I personally dig it more than VR.
It’s not really a fad when there’s lots of people who enjoy but the companies abandoned it because they want to push a new product like VR especially when they still pump out every new movie in 3D.

    • But there’s no reason why VR can’t let you enjoy content in 3D.

Different image to each eye with an offset is all that 3D requires.

  • Nice, already played and finished trine 1 & 2, looking forward to play trine 3 :)

  • Awesome! One night, two friends and I decided to marathon Trine 2. It is probably one of the best gaming nights I’ve had in a while. Thanks for makin’ awesome stuff!

  • I Platinumed Trine 2 on PS3, and PS4! I’m as hype as hype gets!

    • Be careful talking about platinum trophies. You might get attacked by a person like Kiwi_Shane. Someone usually pees in his Cheerios so he stays in a bad mood.

    • I got a platinum in games like Disgaea 3, Demon’s Souls, an Disney’s Up.

      Come at me Kiwi_Shane!

  • Was just about to buy this so my two friends and I (who quit Destiny) would have a new 3 player game. Unfortunately you guys forgot to add online co-op. Couch co-op is nice but should never replace online in the year 2016… where most games are online-only since everyone has internet.

Looks like a great game, but I will wait for you to add online co-op or just download this when its PS+ free!

  • NOT having online co-op will kill this game for most people. If it was a money thing, your money would have been better spent on online co-op function rather than 3D….

    • We had some technical problems with the online co-op, so it wasn’t up to the level of quality we expect from our games. That’s the main reason we couldn’t add it.

We had stereo 3D support from the start, so it was not taking away from anything else. Online co-op is certainly something we’d like to be able to add in the future, but can’t make any definite promises until we’ve carefully evaluated if it works well enough.

    • Have you tested Share-play with trine?

User beware, but… that’s what it’s there for.

  • So excited to finally have an official release date! Was talking with a friend of mine this morning who was looking to get a new multiplayer game and I let them know you all were trying to get Trine 3 out before Christmas. I read your comments regarding the online multiplayer, and as others have said, we all really appreciate you being so up-front about these things. You really understand how to build a loyal customer base. I’ll definitely be picking this up on launch day!

One question, does the PC version also not have online multiplayer for the time being? Thanks!

    • Thanks, appreciate it! :) We do have online multiplayer on the PC version, but it hasn’t been working as quite as well as we’d hoped there either. 3D gameplay combined with heavy physics simulation and latency is not the easiest to get properly working, so I think it’s something we need to improve in general.

  • Work of art like usually. The game looks nice, do I smell Trine Trilogy physical release in the future?

  • “will not include online multiplayer” and there goes another sale. I thoroughly enjoyed platting the second with my friends. No way I’m going to buy a game like this to play alone.

Such a lazy, cheap decision. “We do have online multiplayer on the PC version, but it hasn’t been working as quite as well as we’d hoped there either.”, so go ahead and give us the multiplayer too and let us decide if it’s a problem or not. Do you not plan to work out the issues or something?

    • I also want to thank you for supporting 3D in games. That alone makes me want to buy your game. It’s a shame that this feature appears to be going extinct, especially since there are so many game from last gen that look amazing in 3D. For example, Puppeteer, Motorstorm Apocalypse/Pacific Rift, Super Stardust, and Zen Pinball.

    • Pan, you are more than welcome to your opinions and sharing your thoughts, but you are stepping very close to rudeness with your comments — including the “lazy, cheap” comment. Please be respectful to our authors or you won’t have a place in these comments.

    • Hey Ryan,

I can’t say I feel too good about your comment to me. You pointed out that I have not violated anything, which I know, but you are singling me out and threatening to ban me?
If you have a personal issue with me, I would much prefer to discuss that privately.

As for me expressing my frustrations, we are all entitled to our opinions, as you’ve also just stated. The author said that the PC version has a major feature that is being excluded from the PS4 version. That alone is is highly disappointing, and the fact that Trine 3 is going to be priced the same on PS4 as on Steam, while missing that major feature only adds to that disappointment.
I consider myself to be a big fan of the series. I bought the first installment and the DLC and played through that, I bought the second game and platted it together with two of my friends. If someone is frustrated about this announcement, I personally think that is completely understandable.

Happy holidays, Ryan (if you celebrate them).

    • Thanks for the honest comment, it was not an easy decision to leave out online multiplayer. It could be patched on later but I can’t make any promises on that. Everyone is definitely entitled to an opinion and we knew a lot of people would miss playing online, that’s why we wanted to be as transparent about it as possible.

    • Pan the Man have you at least considered trying Share Play? Sony worked hard on that. Can’t promise it’ll be the solution, but… it’s there for a reason.

    • Unfortunately, my connection is too slow for Sony to allow me to try it.

  • Trine 2 PS3 was especially fun, will get this one day. Especially since the trophies aren’t painful as Trine 2 PS4 list.

    • Trine 2 on PS3 was definitely less fun, has less levels, less challenges (trophies) compared to the PS4 version and is not as “painful” as you think but seeing your trophies list I can understand why you say that.

  • AWESOME! Will you guys be able to expand and give us the Complete Story? Definitely buying this. I LOVE the Trine franchise, would make a great movie.

    • That’s a difficult question to answer, we’d of course love to continue the story but it would take some serious financing and time, so I can’t promise anything.

  • I loved the first 2, but sadly no online is a deal breaker for me. My friend and I, who is located in a different country, played the first two multiple times, not be able to for the third time really sucks.

Game looks amazing, but I will not be buying unless online co-op is added.

Gutted really, as we were both really excited for this.

  • Really thank you for the stereoscopic 3D support!

  • Wow this came out of nothing,I’m really surprised…did you guys released any info about Trine 3 before?…anyway I’m definitely getting this,I love Trine and also couch co-op FTW,thank you guys for this.
BTW Frozenbyte…how about a sale on Trine 1 for PS3?…Trine 2 is on sale very often but never Trine 1…come on there are people willing to give you money.

  • Excellent! Huge thanks for continuing the 3D support, and making games that are both artistically interesting as much as the gameplay is satisfying! Simply can’t wait!!!!! Oh, and more music music from Ari? Just take my money please!

  • I LOOOOOOOVE the Trine series and Frozenbyte as a developer. So much wonder and creativity in these games, plus there is no other like it. As a Game Design and Software Engineering student, I strive to be a part of a studio like your one day! Games like these is what inspires us to play, create, and share these games throughout our life as these games are not just games, they are EXPERIENCES. i cannot wait to play this. Thanks again Frozenbyte.

  • Can’t wait to play this love the series. Question does it support Shareplay? That way I can still play online couch co-op with my brother who lives in a different state :)

    • Shareplay *should* work, we’ve briefly tested it. (As long as both accounts have an active PS+ subscription). No guarantees on latency issues etc.

  • Yes! I didn’t know it was coming to PS4 so soon. 3D platformer, 1080p, 60fps, stereo 3D… Well, take my money guys!

  • The support for 3DTVs when we’re nearly in 2016 has confirmed a purchase from me. Really sad that so few good games took advantage of 3D. At least 3D movies still come out all the time.
Really enjoyed the first Trine and have Trine 2 on both PS3 and PS4 but just never got around to playing it. Will need to rectify that before jumping into this one.
And as others have said, thank you for giving out so much useful information in the post. Much appreciated.

  • I can forgive about the absence of online multiplayer since I platine both 1 and 2 alone, (though I can totally understand those who always play this with friends or family since it’s supposed to be one of the main key of the series) but I can’t accept that they removed “Walk in the Park” some will disagree that it was too hard but for me trophies are related to how skilled or how well you actually deserve it. If everything was too easy, there’ll be no reason to add trophies.

  • I have a 3D TV, and Trine 2 had the best 3D gameplay of any other 3D game I’ve played. Definitely picking this up the day it comes out :)

  • I’m just going to quote someone who has bought and played Trine 3 on Steam (full game, not beta or alpha)

“quote= There are just three words I have in mind after playing this game with 2 friends: “WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥?!”
I liked Trine 1 and I loved Trine 2. Trine 3 is a disaster. In short:

    + nice graphics
    + ok story

    – full of bugs of any kind (wall and object glitches, broken doors , buggy bossfights, …)
    – 3 D game principle is almost impossible to play (controlling characters is too vague and confusing)
    – no more skills (yup, that means no ice arrows, no planks ect) the characters start with some “new” skills but they lack “old” skills and there is no way to learn new skills (so no leveling up in general!)
    – levels are too easy! there are almost no passages which require teamwork!

    [Part 2 below]

  • – collecting pyramids unlocks new levels (which means if you do not have enough of them you have to play an old level AGAIN to collect some more before you can move forward to the next level!!)
    – the game ends right in the middle of the story… and it is not even an “open ending” or something. The wizzard just says “Great now we only need two more […] to repair the […]” [spoiler ^^] and then you see the credits

    Result:
Game is super frustrating thanks to all the bugs, very short and ends in the middle of the story! Please do NOT buy it.

P.S. I feel sorry for the Community Manager who has to go through all the negative feedback but I feel so betrayed and disappointed that I just couldn’t help but warn people NOT to buy this game. /quote”

In general, you pay around $20 for an unfinished game, with lots of bugs (I can assume they did sort this out), no skill tree, no challenges.
Conclusion: Very DISAPPOINTING and it hurts because Trine 1 and 2 were very good, they tried to innovate with the 3D movement set but they spent so much time on it that they forgot the rest.

Those who will buy this game are either ignorant or trophy hunter.

    VERY DISAPPOINTING

  • Have the first two on PS3 and the second one on PS4. Thank you for keeping the 3D support. I understand some of the disappointment from the lack of online multiplayer, but it can be added later.

  • Been an avid fan of the Trine games since the 1st one released on PS3, fell in love with the fantastic soundtrack and beautiful art direction! So great to finally get to play the 3rd and an even more beautiful and lush world than I could have imagined ever seeing!! <3 Thank you for this and happy holidays to your team! :)

  • Is this the first stereoscopic 3D game on PS4? I love my 3DTV. People diss 3D after watching movies in the theater, but most movies released are fake 3D, gotta check a blog or something beforehand and make sure it was shot in 3D. Most of the blockbuster hit movies are fake and people think 3D sucks as a result.

    • Nope. Trine 1 and 2 both are I believe and so is Zen Pinball 2. Outside of those, I am not certain. Though I would love for games to bring it back.

    • Here’s a handy list of 3D games on PS4. I actually didn’t realize a few of these were 3D, so I learned something new as well.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_4_games_with_3D_support

  • Word of an incomplete story and a lack of online support unfortunately means that I’ll be passing. I loved playing Trine 2: Complete Edition from PS+ with my friend, but we don’t meet locally and co-op is undoubtedly the best way to play this game.

Best of luck. Hopefully you’ll be able to get online working eventually, because I’d love to return to this series.

  • @Caliburst89

Yeah, I agree on some of my list. Some on my list are grindy and difficult.

Dungeon Travelers 2, Soul Sacrifice Delta, Tales of Hearts R, Persona 4 G, Top Spin 4 and so on.

  • People talking about online multiplayer remember:
    Share Play is an option!
    ;)

  • Yeah sure, it’s like saying “instead of going from point A to point B, let’s take point C, then point D, and finally reach B.”

Anyway there’s no excuse for not adding online coop, 2 good reasons:
    – Trine 1 and 2 have online coop (it’s one of the main key of the series)
    – PC version has online coop !!

Although most players here are not aware of how the game is doing on the PC version, I will leave a link to the Steam version which is EXACLTY the same as the PS4 version with one more level and an online coop. (read customer reviews)

    http://store.steampowered.com/app/319910/

    • Exactly the same?

You do know that they have to reprogram aspects of the game for the PS4 right?

No of course not. You have a chip on your shoulder and you’re speaking hypothetically in a way that lets you blow off some steam. (pun not intended)

Please be reasonable until the game comes out, then we’ll see if it’s a broken mess, and please apologize if the game is better than on PC.

  • What about us anti-social gamers? Please tell me there is a single player mode as well.

  • This may be a dumb question, but can you play this game even if you can’t see 3D (I only have vision in one eye).

    • Sure you can. 3D is just an option. You would need a 3D TV and 3D glasses to view it in 3D. Without the glasses, it’s no different from any other game.

  • This is one of my favorite games to play with my girlfriend. I just finished the first one a couple of days ago. I also finished Trine 2 when it was up on PS Plus, but I plan to play it again on co-op and then for sure I’ll get Trine 3. So excited for this launch! Great game guys!

  • Here we go again!

  • Yes,buying it fire the 3D alone.

  • The most beautiful games on Playstation. Thanks for the 3D features. It is an amazing feature and I wish more devs would use it. Trine 1 & 2 were great. I am really glad to see what’s in store in this 3rd chapter. I pity the fool that doesn’t play Trine!

  • My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can’t believe how easy it was once I tried it out.

    This is what I do►►► WWW.WALLSTREET34.COM

  • Me and my TWO buddies who I’ve played Trine 1 and 2 TOGETHER with were really looking forward to lunge into Trine 3. No online co-op? Really? If we’d known that none of us would have bought the game. Is it possible to return it to PS Store? Otherwise, if you could at least give us a timeframe for adding online co-op? Seriously, you have a great game series, but not being able to play together with friends takes away massively from the experience.
