Prison Architect Launches June 28 on PS4

Mark South's Avatar Posted by Guy, Double Eleven

Hi everyone. I’m really happy to let you know that Prison Architect is coming to PS4 on June 28! Not only that, it’s also available to pre-order today through select retailers and as a special offer we’re including the “All Day and a Night” DLC for free!

If you’re familiar with our million-selling, BAFTA-winning title on PC, I hope this comes as good news! The team at Double Eleven has been working closely with its originators Introversion for close to a year to create what’s being regarded as one of the best adaptations of a strategy game to console — and we are all very proud of that!

Prison Architect, PS4

If you’re wondering what the game is all about, we like to describe Prison Architect as the world’s best lock ’em up. When setting out to create the PS4 edition of Prison Architect, we wanted to offer a toe-in-the-water experience for those who have never been big strategy gamers.

You start with an empty plot of land and have to build a holding cell, while a bus load of prisoners slowly trundle toward the prison gate. Once the prisoners are safely in the holding cell the race is on to construct a cell block with a shower and canteen before the next bus arrives. Once the initial rush is over, the only limit is your imagination: workout rooms, libraries, solitary cells, and even death row — as we say: it’s your prison and your rules!

Prison Architect, PS4Prison Architect, PS4

Even if you’re new or have never been interested in strategy games but have an interest in exploring the world of incarceration, crime, and punishment from a hands-on perspective, Prison Architect is a great way to get stuck in. I can promise that you’ll never look at [insert name of your favorite Prison drama] the same way after playing.

When your prison is built you can go online with World of Wardens to share it with the PlayStation community as well as browse and play prisons created by other Architects.

Prison Architect also includes a fully-fledged story mode that unravels a tale of jealousy, defeat, murder, deception, embezzlement, lies, family, and betrayal.

Prison Architect, PS4

The All Day and a Night DLC contains eight new wardens, prison maps, and plots to expand your prison experience and play with how your prisons are run. Each Warden has a particular way in which they’d like to run a prison, so when hired expect some changes! Warden Rick Beresh, MD, may run experiments on your inmates; Warden El Cocinero will expose inmates to fine dining; prototype Warden W-800 will jack up your armed guards to handle even the toughest situations!

The new prisons range from ultra-secure facilities with moats and fences to luxury prisons with elegant cells and everything in between. You can even land your prisoners on The Rock, the notorious prison that inspired Prison Architect. You can also build your penitentiary on exciting new plots, including an abandoned oil facility, the banks of a historic lake, an abandoned city block, and a desolate desert.

Thanks for reading everyone, and if you have any questions just ask!

I do have 2 questions though… when will it be available for pre-order? And am I right to guess that it will cost $30?

    Hi “StormPoet”

Thanks for the love! I think it sounds like your birthday is the same as mine ;-)

Yes Prison Architect is priced at $29.99 in the USA. The game will be released digitally as well as boxed versions, whilst stocks last ;-). You will be able to pre-order Prison Architect through retailers.

Can you say who, specifically, the “select retailers” are that are offering preorders? Can you give the price? I’m always frustrated by announcement posts like this that leave out the price – for better or worse, it’s may be what determines if some of us pick it up or not.

My guess is that the price is going to be $30 because that what it sells for on PC and on the “other” system. As for the retailers that are offering it right now I know for sure its available on Target, Gamestop and Amazon. I wanna know when it will be available for pre-order on the PS Store. I buy everything digitally.

Cool concept! Any chances you will bring this game to PS Vita?

    Hi,

Thanks for the support, we think its a cool concept too. The whole idea came from a trip to Alcatraz.

Sorry, but there are no plans to develop a Vita version of Prison Architect at this time.

Knowing a bit about how Prison Architect works I assume it would be quite a lot of work to get it running solid on Vita. Nearly all the game is CPU bound because it is running a crazy number of AI systems, each prisoner has its own AI based on the type of prisoner, if its male/female, and about 100 other factors including mood and needs. Then toss in a full economy, heat, gangs, events, guards and all that logic, weather, tunnels, dogs, food power and water distribution, visitation. Nearly everything in the same is running its own simulation, on PC some of the bigger prisons can really lay waste to the CPU on decently powerful systems and these guys at Double 11 got it all running at 60fps on console. As cool as this would be on vita its just not feasible.

This game looks like it would be great on a Vita. Any chance of a Vita version?

Do we need “no no buy” in every game announcement post? Seriously, I LOVE the Vita and PSTV, but for crying out loud, not every developer has the resources, and frankly I don’t want games dumbed down for Vita.

Anyway, I’ve had my eye on this for a while. Game looks great, thanks Gaz.

I re-read my question and I wasn’t really clear I guess… will the game be available for pre-order from the PS Store? I want that puppy pre-loaded and ready to play at midnight on release day! :p And my bday is the 21st. :D

Can’t wait to get it! Had two quick questions:
First can we still get the free dlc if we pre-order from the psstore.
And secondly just curious if there were anything you had to leave out from the pc version.
Thanks a ton guys!

    Hi “shark201″

You can get the DLC when you pre-order through selected retailers, however pre-orders are not available directly from the PlayStation Store in North America.

Regards leaving stuff out. We aren’t really thinking about parity between the console and PC versions. Over the course of development they’ve become two definitive versions of themselves. The console versions have tons of additions on top of new UI, Controls, Camera, Front End etc… plus Warden Mode, World of Wardens and the ability to add Water.
We’ve also seen some of the popular console features such as Quick Rooms make their way onto PC.

As we’ve had to start closeing down and polishing the game, some cool new things were added on PC version such as Gangs and Choose a Warden. We’ve squeeze those in too and adapt them with our console controls, UI and player messaging. We’ve had to stop somewhere though (as much as the designer in me wants to keep going forever ;-)) so some of the newer PC content such as female prisoners haven’t made the cut, but are high up on the list of things we could do post-launch, if the game is a successful as we feel it can be.

Will we get The PC Items like The Watchtower and The Escape Mode ??? I’m really Hyped for this game !!

    Hi “Wisam134”,

Thanks for the support, that’s awesome.

I’m afraid those things were added into the PC version after we began to polish up and finish the console versions. The last big thing we squeezed in and adapted for the console version were “gangs”.
Those things are also things still being worked on and tested out on the PC version, so there would likely be a chunk of work involved to bring them onto console, to work nicely with our console UI, player messaging and perhaps a tutorial/story for new players to understand what to do.
With that said we know that an Escape Mode in particular is a very popular idea. Its high up on the list of things we could do post-launch, if the game is a successful as we feel it can be.

Of course there’s hundreds of improvements and little extras only in the console versions, plus Warden and World of Warden modes.

Thanks, Gaz – Design Manager at Double 11 – @Gaz_Wright

Will there be “bonuses” or discounts available for early access owners who already support development on PC? I’ve had Prison Architect on my PS4 game trading want/wishlist for months and have been referring inquisitive minds to my videos and streams for the Steam version which has definitely built some anticipation for the console version. If history repeats itself (same stream hype for Risk of Rain and a few other indies making PC to PS4 transition) then Prison Architect should do very well on PS4. ^_^
