PlayStation Meeting 2016: Introducing PS4 Pro and the Slimmer, Lighter PS4

More than three and a half years ago, I stood on stage in New York to unveil PlayStation 4, which captured our vision for the future of gaming. That vision placed the gamer at the center of the PlayStation ecosystem and empowered developers to create transformative experiences. This afternoon I returned to New York for another PlayStation Meeting to discuss the evolution of the PlayStation 4 platform and introduce PS4 Pro. This new high-end PS4 will sit alongside the new slimmer, lighter PS4, which we officially unveiled today.

The new standard PS4 is starting to ship to retailers now and will be available by September 15 for a suggested retail price of $299.99 USD ($379.99 CAD), representing great value for gamers who haven’t joined the PS4 community just yet. Our engineering and design teams collaborated to consolidate PS4’s high-performance technology into a smaller, more energy efficient form factor. When comparing the new PS4 model to the current model, we’ve reduced volume by 30 percent, weight by 16 percent, and power consumption by 28 percent. Despite the sleek design, the new model packs all of the same powerful components that have made PS4 the best place to play.

With PlayStation 4 Pro our goal is to deliver innovation in the form of cutting-edge visuals and graphics while in the midst of the PS4’s lifecycle. PS4 Pro, which launches November 10, 2016, for a suggested retail price of $399.99 USD ($499.99 CAD), enhances PS4 games by supporting the latest in imaging technology through 4K resolution and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as smoother frame rates. Games that already look extraordinary on PS4 will look richer and more detailed, thanks to the more powerful GPU and faster CPU at the heart of PS4 Pro.

With more pixels, 4K’s higher resolution delivers graphics that are sharper and have greater detail than ever imagined. HDR enables visuals to look much closer to the way your eyes see the real world.

Some developers are updating previously launched PS4 games to add PS4 Pro support, while other developers are building PS4 Pro support into upcoming releases. At launch, you’ll be able to download patches for games – such as Uncharted 4 – which are enhanced when playing on the new console. Future releases that will have PS4 Pro enhancements built-in include Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Days Gone.

However, even if you own an HDTV that does not support either 4K or HDR, PS4 Pro still provides a number of benefits. All games will run in 1080p resolution, and some will even run in a higher or more stable framerate. If you’re a gamer that wants to be at the forefront of innovation, PS4 Pro is for you.

We also know a lot of our fans watch movies, TV shows, and videos on their PS4, so we’re working with our partners who offer best-in-class streaming services to build new apps for PS4 Pro. Netflix will launch a new app at the launch of PS4 Pro that supports 4K. YouTube is also developing a new 4K-compatible app for PS4 Pro.

But it’s important to note that the choice is yours. Whether you’re playing on PS4 Pro, the new slimmer and lighter PS4, or the PS4 system you bought at launch in 2013, you’ll have access to the same amazing games with the same features and same vibrant community that make PlayStation the best place to play. There won’t be any gameplay features exclusive to PS4 Pro or the standard PS4. In fact, we believe the impact of HDR on gaming and entertainment is so promising that all PlayStation 4 systems – back to the very first console sold in 2013 – are now HDR capable.

It is incredibly important for us, and our developer partners, to maintain one PS4 audience. All PS4 systems are also ready to deliver on the promise of virtual reality with the upcoming launch of PlayStation VR. Whichever system you choose, we’ll continue to give you the exclusive franchises, blockbuster third-party titles, and unique games from creative developers that you’ve come to expect from PlayStation.

I want to take a moment to thank everyone in the PlayStation Nation for the incredibly passionate support around PS4. From day one with PS4, we’ve been driven to create a system tuned to the needs of gamers. PS4 Pro builds on that goal even further, and we can’t wait for you to try it.

  • Stupid question: I bought a 4K UHD Vizio TV last month. How do I know whether it is (or not) an HDR TV? Is 4K UHD same thing as HDR or different?

  • I love my PS4, so i was only really looking at the Pro for the 4K bluray…. which it doesn’t have. Guess I’ll have to get a xbox one s just to play 4k bluray.

  • People complaining about the 4K drive , big deal is not to many movies on 4K plus most them people didn’t own a 4K tv .streaming 4K is the future.

    • “plus most them people didn’t own 4k tv”

So, why does this bother to tout about 4K at all? Why support it in any fashion? Most people by your statement don’t have one, so why bother with streaming 4k? Or upscaling to 4k with games?

People with 4k tvs, would actually like to use their 4k blurays. Like myself.

    • No its not people need a Internet connection speed of at least 25 megabits per second to stream with no data caps for 4k

  • My oh my how the tables have turned. Releasing an ugly product that’s also missing features that consumers want. That sounds all to familiar. Sony, you were not in good shape before the PS4 and now that the everyone knows what PS4 Pro is capable of, you’ve just signed your own death certificate. Condolences.

  • @gomes

Because this is their “pro” elite model targeted at 4K tv owners and prospective 4K tv buyers prospective VR buyers, core buy all Sony product consumers

4K 1080p has been driven by cinema ie movie lovers this is about higher or at least mid tier gear. Disc blu Rays / 4K uhd blu Rays are higher quality than streaming for video and audio full stop. The reason ****** compression look at the file sizes in sony’s own store, and tv providers and netlflix while better is also compressed.

It’s why I own stuff like band of brothers game of thrones exclusively on blu Ray and many movies. I will buy my first uhd with Star Wars 7 and that will rule this out.

There are all the other reasons I listed for physical over digital plus the fact the digital is included and store prices and storage use are terrible.

That’s it. Slim is for the plebs. Pro for gullibles, wannabes and power users that don’t need the 4K blu.

    • People seriously just don’t realize how low 4K bluray sales are and will continue to be with the investment needed to produce 4K blurays, especially from all the past films that don’t have a 4K master.

So now all the kiddies cry, when in reality this system would have sold badly at 499.99. So Sony ****es off 10k rabid gamers that cannot be bothered to get a player themselves or invest in a PC and a player when those are available.

Bottom line: 4K bluray sales are garbage. I have over 300 blurays and no 4K titles, no 4K screen either, and could not care less about all this. I want the PS4 Pro for games. Period. I’ll get a 4K disc player for my PC when I need to.

  • There are a bunch of 4K uhd blu Rays available, almost every new release is available that way, even 3D is available, they have digital and multiple formats for value and they are selling to existing blu Ray collectors without 4K tv that plan on getting one, and those that have 4K tv already.

This is just more ignorance. Walk into Best Buy, look at Amazon hell they are even in Walmart here in Canada and we have 1/11th of your consumer base.

Sony managed to find a deal breaker it’s astounding. I would have considered selling my ps4 for the upgrade but now I will hedge my bets. No better controller option still, no uhd player, delayed games, higher price on games console live controllers than Microsoft in Canada. I’m gonna ride it out and see what Microsoft offer next year, PS3 was a dog when I was enjoying my 360. Jury is out, Nintendo lost me after cube, Sony could too.

  • Welp, the announcement of the PS4 Pro was completely unnecessary. All the hype for nothing hahaha…Anyone with 4K everything (except a new playstation now lol….) will understand this is nothing more than a slightly better version of the PS4. If you have a PS4, do not purchase this. If you have a 4K tv, do not buy this. If you do have 4K tech, you know the difference in picture and sound quality of a UHD Blu-Ray disc than streaming 4K content. The decision to not have UHD Blu-Ray drive makes this nothing more than the current PS4 and step down from Xbox One S, and I’ll never buy an Xbox…I’m guessing Sony felt pressure from all the hype about the “Neo” but they definitely laid a big fat hairy goose egg with this.

    • Agreed.

PS4 Pro + 4K bluray support = instant day one purchase for me, no questions about it.

PS4 Pro without 4k bluray = wtf is the point?

  • Will there be a trade in promo for people who already own the original ps4 and want to upgrade to the pro? If so this seems a bit opportunistic, considering the ps4 original is not going away or being replaced by the pro, just slimming down.

    • They didn’t mention any trade in promo if I remember correctly. The upcoming firmware update for the PS4 will essentially make it a PS4 Pro. Save your money.

    • Gamestop is offering a program lol. I think it’s $150 for your ps4 or xbox one if you preorder the pro. RIPOFF!!

  • Guys… where the heck is the UHD 4K Bluray Player?!? Why was this not included??

  • Neither new model supports 4K Blu-rays!? Very disappointing.

  • Tell your marketing guys to get their act together. There’s no pro without a 4K bluray drive included in the ‘pro’ model.

  • Sony’s answer to the Wii U. LOL

  • Is the Eject and Power button mechanical? Because those touch sensitive ones in the original became a annoyance when they eject your game randomly, even during your gaming session

  • The pro is not going to play games at native 4K resolutions. Not at this price point and not at the hardware that was rumored months ago. This device is simply rendering at 1080p and then up scaling the output to 4K. Sorry no thanks. My 4K tv already up scales for me like everyone playing on a 4K tv right now. Yeah ok sure instead of choppy not fully 1080p/60 you will probably get a stable full 1080p/60 with pro. But don’t be fooled. This is not the 4K gaming you all are hoping for.

  • Missed opportunity Sony. The pro needs to have 4K Blu-Ray why is this not there? Why did you remove the optical audio port from the slim? Lots of people use that for 3rd party headsets. Don’t get cocky just because you winning more decisions like this and July won’t be the only Month you lose to Xbox. I beg you playstation listen to your fans and fix this sinking ship fast.

  • Need UHD Bluray drive. ffs.

  • There’s no way to sugarcoat it: the exclusion of a 4K bluray player is a MAJOR misstep. Many people, myself included, were looking to the neo/pro to be where I jump into the world of 4K discs. It seemed like a complete no brainier that a system being built for the world of 4K would include it… Especially with the competition including one in their revamp.

Very disappointed. This felt like the PS3 reveal.

  • Hello Sony, I’m guessing you will put out a FAQ for PS4 Pro soon, I hope so.
Just wondering if you will be able to capture at 1080p video now, since all games run at 1080p.
I hope the capture function is upgraded, really need to put out 1080p on youtube now days.
From – NinjaLand Games on Youtube – THANKS!

  • I don’t normally leave comments, but I feel I had to speak up in this instance. I’m really disappointed after all the talk you gave about 4k only to find you didn’t put in a UHD bluray capable drive. Up until this point Playstation has always led the charge when it came to keeping up to date with formats: The original PS with CDs, the PS2 with DVDs, and the PS3 with it’s cutting edge bluray player. So it’s extra disappointing when you make a big push for 4k streaming and gaming, but then don’t allow us the ability to enjoy 4k content straight from the disc.

I’d really like to hope there is time for you to either put in a UHD player, or create a new SKU that includes one (even at a somewhat higher cost).

  • WTF SONY…. I have a sony 4k tv and i purchased the ones just for the 4k drive… its nice that the system itself can output 4k and i will enjoy that but come on every device sony is pushing now supports or creates 4k why not put a 4k blue ray drive in the system at least the pro model. Now i have to use my xbox as my entertainment system instead of my ps4. Bad movie on sony’s part in my opinion..

  • I’ve never owned an Xbox before, but I guess I will now to watch UHD BD.

  • I have to say that was thee worse Sony showing I have ever seen. You guys couldn’t find a used car salesman that day to help you with that infomercial-crap-fest? Boring, no actual before and after/side-by-side comparison shots, and a complete waste of time. I wasn’t sold on this cellphone like gimmick before, and certainly wasn’t sold on it afterwards.

Next time you feel like putting on a Xbox level bs-infomercial, let us know so we don’t needlessly waste our time.

  • Ugly ugly ugly. Look at these toys trying to be PCs with their walled eco system designed to rip you off with more expensive games and a pay wall to use online. Sony, you stink. Stop trying to be PCs, you’ll never match the choices and depth that PC gaming offers.

  • Love the PS4 Pro!! cant wait to have it

  • I love that Sony is offering HDR to all PS4 systems and that the slim is smaller, slightly better, and a good price, but the Pro does not seem like a big enough improvement to purchase it over either an original or slim.. Yes the pro has a 1TB Hard drive, 4K capabilities (although they may not be true 4K), and a faster/slightly better chip but without having the best Blu-ray player it doesn’t seem like enough. A hard drive is easy and relatively inexpensive to replace, so I if I do buy a PS4, I will either get an original at a discount or the slim. That is the debate…I’ve also been anxiously awaiting the Nintendo NX. I love my Wii but didn’t bother with the Wii U. Xbox is a contender, but I’m not sure I want Microsoft as a gaming console…

  • I wanted the blue Uncharted console because the color is awesome, but the slim might be a better deal since it is smaller and uses less power. I also read a ton of bad reviews about the original PS4 consoles having issues with the power supply causing it to shut off and need repair. I personally know people who have had this issue, so if I get a PS4 it will probably be the slim, hoping that they fixed that issue and I like the idea of getting the updated Dual Shock 4 controller. Another issue with the original PS4 systems was the controllers broke…they did fix that with the limited editions though.

What is your opinion? PS4 (Which one?) Vs. Nintendo NX Vs. Microsoft Xbox S1 or Scorpio?

    • In your case I would buy the Uncharted edition. I just saw a price drop at 299.99$ on amazon (it is VERY beautiful and it contains the must-have uncharted 4). I have 3 PS4 (yes, an American one, a European one and the 20th anniversary). All of them with no problems at all. Only the thumb-stick caps of one of my controllers go bad and I ordered some from eBay. I would pass on the slim. Remember that in order to have less mass, they make smaller fans (or they remove some) and usually the first slim versions have overheating issues because of this. The pro sounds really good as a choice IF you are willing to give +100$ with no game at all on your set… I personally don’t like the idea of buying a console every 3 years, and so, I will stick with my originals PS4s till PS5. Hope I helped!

  • BUT IT’S IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THE CHOICE IS YOURS.

I capitalized what I think should have been. Hopefully I don’t get in trouble for pointing this out but I thought it was necessary. Especially because playstation asks us to not be jerks. They also say Please: be kind, be considerate, and be constructive.

  • I don’t think its kind or considerate or constructive to hype something up for no reason. You add a few minor upgrades like storage LOL and processing…what the heck is the firmware update for again. So the “pro” has more storage guys so we have to make a slim version to put out at the same time to make this “pro” version seem so much better.

This paragraph is Sony’s warning that it is OUR choice if WE get suckered into purchasing a “Pro” ps4 because they are the same hahaha….at least they are warning us!!!!! Thanks for the heads-up!!

  • From the opening statement of the press conference. “The living room would no longer be the center of the PlayStation ecosystem, the gamer would.” As Mr. Andrew House stated this was the primary vision of the PS4 from the very start “GAMERS”. To everyone here complaining about the lack of an updated bluray drive so that you can play your movies, go cry some wheres else. PS4 is gamer focused, you want to watch your DVDS then buy a player that supports it or as some have mentioned move on to the new Xbox, we won’t miss you. Sony upgraded this new PS4 PRO to appeal to gamers who want more from their high end setups to play GAMES not movies, all while keeping the cost down. I say great job Sony. All of us gamers don’t want an over priced system with extra entertainment features, we want a gaming system.

    • If you firmly beleive that why include an optical drive in the first place? Why include netflix you tube etc…if you are going to offer a higher end product dont go half way on it go high end and no matter how you try to spin it they dropped the ball.

    • You know they opened with that statement about the gamer being the center of the ecosystem because they knew the backlash would be about no UHD Blu ray drive right…Don’t be that naive to think Sony was looking out for the gamer with this “upgrade”. They are in a contract with Netflix for streaming 4K content is why they didn’t add this. All of this was a co-marketing campaign for Netflix. Hints the lackluster press announcement. If this was about PS4 PRO and “the gamer” don’t you think they would have made the console sooooo much better?? I mean a multi-billion dollar company like Sony only adding another chip and more storage hahahaha….The backlash is going to be so much worse when it comes out and everyone realizes they now have two PS4’s that do the same thing. Go buy a 4K tv and you’ll know why the PS4 PRO is getting all these comments. Netflix won this battle.

  • those two comments are suppose to be together but the site says i’m posting to quickly and I have to leave a comment shorter than 1250 characters.

  • Well, I was hopping to see a larger increase in storage capacity, 1TB seriously !! I boosted my ps4 storage to 2TB and still not enough with all this games adds on DLC’s and games data It wont long last you.

Haven’t you Sony thought about this already since you promoting digital contents to buy ? where is the support for greater HHD’s -__-

I will wait and won’t rush into buying this, since the deal isn’t that great to be honest. Although I have a 55inch 4k Sony TV that I bought specially for my ps4..

    Pretty disappointed

  • If everyone can just stream 4K content, then everyone can just download all their games, right? I mean, whats the point of having an optical drive at all then? How’s PS Now going BTW, Sony?

I’m lucky enough to have high speed internet here where I live in Australia so I can stream 4K just fine, but there’s a heck of a lot of people who can’t. I’m sure there are plenty of people around the world who live in areas where the internet simply cant support this kind of streaming, and yet you assume everyone can by not supporting the physical format.

4K TVs are relatively affordable and I reckon there’s a fair few people who’d like to spend some cash on 4K Blu-rays if only they had a UHD player. If you had put UHD Blu-ray support in the Pro – even if it increased the RRP by $100 – you’d sell a heck of a lot more of them then you will without it.

Also, most, if not all 4K TVs will have apps like Netflix inbuilt, so the fact that you’re advertising that the PS4 Pro can output 4K Netflix is basically a moot point.

  • I was so looking forward to this but i’m really disappointed that performance wise it looks like most games won’t even do 1080p / 60fps As tomb raider will only do 45fps and thats without any graphical increases.
As i only have a HDTV am i expected to buy this for a 15fps increase? I thought it was odd they never ran split screen comparisons for frame increases in 1080p or the graphical increase between both consoles, Surely this is the main selling point to most of the demographic.
It also doesn’t look very premium, I thought the slim looked really cheaply made cosmetic wise and that it would be sold for $250 or less and the Neo would use the same high gloss as the ps4.
I just wish they’d waited another year and went all out to compete with the scorpio and run games in actual 4k.

    • Another point to add is they are trying to sell HDR as a game changer in terms of visuals but you do realize response times when using this on your 4k Tv is around 200 – 300ms for most sets, There are a few TV’s out there that have it down to 80ms but this still is useless especially for MP.

  • Where is the 4K Player, if you’re pushing 4K HDR gaming why not add a 4K Player. This is not making no sense. Why not. I want a 4K player on my PS4 Pro. Let me guess Next year you will have a Upgrade PS4 Pro and you going to call it PS4 Pro 4K. I am so disappointed with you Sony.

  • Dear Sony,

I own the vanilla PS4 and was lucky enough to preorder the PSVR. I have a 4K TV and in the market to purchase a 4K UHD BD player.

Leading up to the event, I was so excited to purchase the PS4 Pro. My thinking was that the PS4 Pro would solve my 4K UHD BD player needs as well as offer greater graphics support for my PSVR. My plan was to purchase the PS4 Pro for the living room and move my vanilla PS4 to the bedroom.

I watched the live stream and was beginning to get even more excited about the upgraded graphics. But I was shocked that there was no mention of 4K UHD BD support. I thought maybe it was missed by accident. “Why wouldn’t Sony and the new PS4 Pro support 4K Blu-ray? It has to”, I said to myself. Soon after, the reports came about the official lack of 4K UHD BD support.

The PS4 Pro went from being a must buy to pass. My 4K TV can stream 4K content the same as the PS4 Pro so that isn’t a selling point to me and most likely isn’t a selling point for most as I would imagine the majority of 4K TVs are Smart TVs.

I want a 4K UHD BD player for my 4K TV more than I want 4K gaming. Now I’m going to wait for a black XBO S or Scorpio, whichever comes first.

  • This is so frustrating. I’m a massive Sony fan, but the lack of 4K Blu-ray in the Pro is just ridiculous.

I have 100mbit internet, so I can stream 4K just fine. I have a 4K TV and an av receiver that support it. UHD Blu-rays look and sound significantly better than streaming. No questions.

Why would I buy a Pro if it doesn’t support 4k? Upscaling to 4K isn’t 4k gaming and without UHD blu-ray support, this is a big waste of money.

In Australia, you can buy an Xbox One S for the same price as a standalone 4K player, so naturally people are going to go and buy an Xbox now – I’m seriously thinking about it. If I have an Xbox One… well I might start playing some games on it now, mightn’t I… and before long, I’m only spending half my time on my PS4 instead of all of it.

Seriously lost opportunity by Sony because they’re not connecting with the audience they think they’re selling to.

  • CRUSHED!! No 4k blue ray movies? I was so looking forward to purchasing a new Sony 4k TV to play 4k games and watch 4k blueray movies on my new PS4 Pro in November. I am not purchasing a 4k TV so I can watch Cage on netflix. Well at least we get a free update to our current systems. Sony, add the 4k player so I can have a reason to by a 4k TV please!! So disappointing!!

  • I can’t for the life of me figure out why they didn’t include a 4K drive. If microsoft can put one in their regular slim model, why isn’t it in the “Pro” model? It could not have cost that much to include one, and not including it makes playstation look weak compared to xbox. I was set to trade my old ps4 in and get the new one, but now I can’t justify it to myself or anyone else.

  • I’ve thought this “PS4K” “PS Neo” PS4 “Pro” was a bad idea from the very first rumor.. I was hoping it was just that… a rumor.

I am quite happy with the PS4 “Amateur”.

Uncharted 4, Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon, Detroit, and many more all look incredible. Why rush more hardware out now when 4K TV’s are in less than 10% of homes. Wait for the PS5..and then add 4K as a feature. My opinion anyway.

  • Man i was really looking into buying this as i will be getting a 4k tv near november but the lack of 4k uhd drive has me wanting to pick up a xbox one s or stand alone player and just skip this model. I mean i already have a ps4 and you could consider me a sony fan boy but this is really dissappointing.

  • No BLURAY 4k Drive ? MEGA FAIL !!!!!!!!!

  • I don’t get all the disappointment and hate. The specs was leaked months and it was ghost marketed as a slightly more powerful PS4. Then we get the slightly more powerful PS4 and people are mad???? Makes no sense. Sony has been saying for a while they want an eco system with two consoles. So there was no way they would give the pro a 4k blu ray drive when the standard model doesn’t have one. IDK if it was hype or too high expectations, i cannot believe i was the only one who saw this coming. I mean Sony has a track record for half step systems (PsP Go). They weren’t going for another step in hardware like microsoft is with the Xbox 4 next year. I guess what it all boils down to is Sony pulling a Nintendo imo. Makes me wonder if microsoft sees this backlash and ups the specs of the Xbox 4. Next year will be interesting to say the least.

    • I’m right there with you, I was expecting this as well. I’m not disappointed in the least.
As for whether MS will adjust anything? Doubtful. Sony said the Pro is twice as powerful, which is pretty substantial when we consider it’ll be making the same games look even better.
But MS already gave the rough specs on Project Scorpio, and it was something like 4x as powerful as the PS4, so it’s already going to be twice as powerful as the Pro. The main thing is, will Scorpio stand a chance when it launches next year at $500, against the PS4 Pro at $400 bundled with various holiday releases, as it won’t be a new system anymore and Sony can afford to pack-in games. It’ll be interesting to see.

  • Sounds like a decent upgrade. Worth my money. The 4k support really don’t matter to me. One thing people fail to get is a 4k system dosen’t mean squat unless you got a 4k TV. It will only show in your TV’s highest resolution. I only have a 2010 Vizio 1080p TV. I can’t afford a 4K TV… Yet… So What if it’s not a UHD Blu-ray player. It’s not gonna look any different on my TV anyway.

  • No 4k player native? No problem. I can download the movies. This has dual band wifi support (5GHz), a gpu that operates at 300% performance (dem teraflops), and a bigger power supply. I might just get it after a couple months. to make sure there aren’t any terrible problems with it.

  • Right before the launch of the PS3, I went out and purchased a brand new Sony 1080p HDTV. I knew the most games wouldn’t support that resolution, but I really wanted it for watching my new Blu-ray collection. When I started hearing rumors about the Neo, I was really looking forward to repeating that process and finally step up to 4K. I have even started purchasing UHD Blu-rays. Now that I hear that the Pro won’t have UHD Blu-ray, I’m not sure when I’ll make the leap to 4K. I really hope that there’s some way to add support in the future, but for now Sony has lost a lot of potential purchases from me.

  • I think I am going to be good with my current PS4 (launch) for a good while. It is nice that the 4k supporting PS4 Pro is pretty affordable at $300, but until I bother getting a 4k TV upgrade, its pretty much pointless and too much of my existing stuff tops out at 1080p so I don’t want to watch/play anything meant for 1080p on a 4k TV screen.

  • … But will the PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro be compatible with PS3 Games!? I feel like this is important to know.

  • Sony TV with AndroidTV built in already supports 4K streaming. Disappointed PS4 Pro does not support UHD discs.

  • With the hundreds of comments on this Blog post, I wonder how many actual, UNIQUE users are complaining… talk about a vocal minority. Also, welcome to my world.
I have a 3DTV that barely gets any gaming use, because the format was abandoned so quickly. However, I have well over 100 3D movies on Blu-Ray. I’ve been noticing lately that movies were being released with both 4K versions and separate 3D versions. I just looked up now to see why I haven’t seen any 4K 3D releases yet. Apparently there won’t be. So 4K as a home video format for me is pointless. What I will do is buy a 4K TV at some point in the future for gaming purposes. Once I confirm I can use PS VR to watch 3D movies, then I won’t need to hang onto my TV.
As for the PS4 Pro, I already pre-ordered it. I want it for GAMES. I’m excited to see how titles like Bloodborne and The Witcher 3 might load faster or have more consistent frame rates. I’m excited to play Farpoint, especially since they showed it’s being tweaked to look even better in VR while being played on a PS4 Pro. This is a gaming console. They obviously left the UHD drive out in order to keep the price down. I, for one, am pleased.

    • Sorry but the fact that this doesn’t compete with Scorpio just shows how much them wiping the floor with Xbox One has gotten to their heads. They didn’t learn a single thing from this generation so far and it will come back to haunt them. The only reason they have sold as well as they have or have as many devs wanting to develop on their console is because the PS4 is the more powerful of the two. That’s it, I get that they are banking on being out before Scorpio but that won’t matter because they allowed Microsoft to announce Scorpio before them. So everyone knows ahead of time that there is a more powerful machine on the horizon.

It’s great that you are such a cheerleader that you will buy anything that they put out but go anywhere on the internet and the consensus is that they royally screwed this up. Even places that tend to put a favorable spin on Sony. Heck I usually stick up for Sony and have owned every Sony console but this is indefensible.

    • Ghostbuster (2016) will be available in a 4K + 3D combo (search Amazon). It was going to be my first 4K purchase as I too have both 4K and an huge appreciation for 3D.
