PlayStation Store’s Top Downloads of 2016

2016 was a pretty fantastic year for games, but you’ll never guess what the most downloaded game at PlayStation Store was this year.

Rocket League!

Psyonix’s supersonic acrobatic take on vehicular sporting continues to delight — even though it launched in 2015 (free for PS Plus members, even!) it garnered more downloads than anything else on our network. Impressive!

Read to see the full PS4, PS3, PS VR charts and more for the full year. You’ll find December’s top downloads a bit further down, just under the 2016 tables. Enjoy!

I’m Assuming this list isn’t including hard copies. Because I don’t think Rocket League is even on a disc

Well Mini Beast, the article is called “PlayStation Store’s Top Downloads of 2016” and above each table it says “Top Downloads” so yes, this isn’t hard copies because you don’t download a hard copy. And actually Rocket League is on a disc, it got a physical collector’s edition release last summer.

Personally, I bought it new on disk from amazon, for less than it’s been offered even on sale through PSN. Some of the numbers in November and December get skewed by black Friday deals, I think.

Rocket League TOTALLY deserves it!

…feel so FRESH in this sad era of gaming were DLC affects gameplay and games are won by the players that put the most money and/or time to unlock “powers” in the game…wich has no place in competitives modes.

The only DLC that should be accepted is visual customisation, “maps”, news modes or new SP content that add longetivity to the game. I really hope devs will take notes, especially Naughty Dog, they’re on top as far as SP games but their MP is suffering a lot of their bad practices (DLC guns and boosters that affect gameplay and put players on unequal grounds, games are depending too much on “powers” and not enough on real “pure” gameplay, something they almost nailed in U2, except for SA).

I will still play ROCKET LEAGUE regularly for all of 2017! :)

Wow, no Last Guardian for December only? It launched at the beginning of the month. Thats insane. People are missing out on a great game.

We’ve been waiting for that game for 8 years. We can wait another one just to get if cheaper.

Or just skip it because it’s boring

+ iKingAces on January 6th, 2017 at 5:04 pm said:

Well, the game is 60 USD’s. Once it drops to 20-30 (if ever) then I’m sure more people will pick it up and enjoy it at that price. Last Guardian has to compete with other 60 dollar titles and titles that aren’t pushed at 60 but are still better than what Last Guardian has to offer. I’m not entirely surprised that it’s not up there.

yooooo VR peeps, jump on BATTLEZONE its amazing!!! unlock new tanks, upgrade tanks, new weapons, new special weapons, huge survival campaign AND online!!!! also dont need move controllers!

also it has classic mode like the old 90s green outline tank game!

i hope this game get mad support because id be into DLC other then just cosmetic.

if they added the helicopters to it that would be UNREAL!!!

and keep adding multiplayer components would be unreal too.

I liked the demo, but $60 is a little high for what it is. I’ll wait for a discount/price drop. Feel like this is a game where the model that would make more sense would be a low entry price, and then, as @k2GM says, keep adding new DLC .

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth manages to be the best selling vita game for 2016 yet Bamco only brings over the PS4 version of Next Order.

*Slow clap*

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth was the best selling digital Vita release in 2016 and Bandai Namco rewards that loyalty by localizing the next game in the series on the platform exclusively on PS4.

Can wait for them to either not make God Eater 3 on Vita, or not localize that version.

Interesting to see a Ratchet Collection and Jak Collection make it for the top ten for Vita for the year. Now imagine if we had an original Vita Exclusive Jak and Daxter game and original Ratchet game. It would be number one. Same could be said for other franchises like God of War, Infamous, GTA and etc. So much missed potential for the Vita. At least give us San Andreas for Vita.

I heard of rocket League but had to look it up to see the details. Soccer with cars….cars are awesome but soccer is just so lame….might give it a try as I think I have it from a Plus free game.

Really surprised there is no Fallout 4 on those lists!

I felt the same way as you, and can tell you that it turns out to be a lot more fun than you think. I actually got my brother and brother-in-law to buy it after playing it with me on my ps4, and neither of them are into soccer either.

One question: Does top downloads equals top sales? I mean, I could’ve bought the game in 2015 and download it only now. Like 2 years after the purchase.

“2016 was a fantastic year for games” Too bad it was also a horrible year for pretty much everything else. That horrible Ghostbusters reboot that I still refuse to even watch, all the celebrity deaths that has happened recently, the fact they shot down a gorilla because some stupid mother didn’t watch over her kid, the fact that we’re stuck with two horrible presidential candidates, I can fill up this whole comment with all the things that made 2016 such an awful year.

Is there anything in your life that doesn’t bring you misery? You genuinely seem miserable about everything.

    + gameman15 on January 9th, 2017 at 2:13 pm said:

@Seluhir Wow. Just… wow. Are you that sick? Do you have a heart of ice? Where were you when all the celebrities (Carrie Fisher, Alan Rickman, David Bowie, Gene Wilder, Muhammad Ali, Kenny Baker, Prince, countless others) passed away in 2016? Are you one of those SJWs defending that awful Ghostbusters reboot? I’m not being miserable, I’m just expressing my thoughts on how 2016 is an awful year. Okay? It’s not just me who hated 2016, it’s everyone else that hated it.

+ Seluhir on January 10th, 2017 at 2:03 pm said:

okay… so yes everything in life DOES bring you misery. Got it. I hope someday you realize that life isn’t so bad and there are lots of things to be happy about.

    + gameman15 on January 10th, 2017 at 2:16 pm said:

@Seluhir I was aware of that. 2016 is a horrible year, there are three things I can think that are good in 2016. The Deadpool movie, the new Doom game, and the Star Wars movie Rogue One. You see, not everything brings me misery, it’s just all of the bad events that happened in 2016 that made it a horrible year. And I really hope you have some respect for those celebrities who passed away in 2016.

+ Seluhir on January 16th, 2017 at 6:56 am said:

Did you know that in the time it took for you to write this post, thousands of people died around the world?

Celebrities are just people and death is the natural conclusion of life. It’s just another step in the cycle. There’s no reason to grieve for every single life that ends – you’ll never have any happiness at all if you try that.

I do hope that those who they left behind can find solace in the good that their life brought to others, though.

What is the release date????? You guys said 1/12 but every retailer has 1/31!!

Has it been delayed again? Why, if its delayed yet again, is there still no announcement about a delay when its only 2 days until its supposed to release? I’ve been trying to get someone from Sony to talk about this for days now, but its like you guys are nonexistent or just don’t care.

PLEASE ANSWER! I have $160.00 you want, you have a product I want; let’s make a deal.

Everyone I know buys physical when a good game comes out (when they have that option).
FromSoftware games I buy physical. Everyone I know also picked up Dark Souls 3 physical.
So to rank them is to compare apples to oranges to cookies and only count fruit votes.

So congratulations ranked games that people did not feel like leaving the houses for.
Dark Souls 3 is still the better game :P
