PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Starting today, those of you selected for our beta program will get an early peek at some of the new features coming to PS4 with our next major system software update, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke). If you signed up for the beta and were chosen, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download and get started.

Even if you’re not participating in the beta, we still wanted to give you a quick glance of the key features that will be rolling out with this update. We’re refining the user interface of PS4 even further, and adding highly requested features like external HDD support and custom wallpapers.

External HDD Support

It’s easy to upgrade the HDD that came with your PS4, but if you’re still looking for more storage space on the console, we’ve got you covered. With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilà, you now have more space on the console.

PS4 System Software Update 4.50 external HDD support

This is compatible with HDDs up to 8TB in size. You can download and install applications directly to your extra storage, and the saved contents are easily manageable through the settings menu.

Also, all the applications saved in the external HDD will appear in the Content Launcher of the Home Screen so it’s easy to keep track of what apps you launched recently.

Please note: user save files are still stored locally on your PS4 HDD. Only games and applications are stored externally.

Custom Wallpapers

This update adds the ability to set your favorite in-game screenshot as the background image for PS4’s home screen. Drop-shadows on text, and the option to dim the Function Area, will help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright.

You can also edit screenshots using Photo Mode in Sharefactory to make your one-and-only custom wallpaper.

Quick Menu Refresh

As you may know, in the last system update we overhauled the PS4 Quick Menu feature (the menu that appears after a long press of the PS button on DualShock 4).

This update brings additional improvements to make it even more accessible. Now the Quick Menu will cover even less of your gameplay screen, and you’ll be able to access handy Party features via Online Friends, like creating new parties, inviting friends, and joining parties, without transitioning to the separate Party app. The goal is to keep you in the game — and not stuck in menus.

Simplified Notification List

Before this update, the Notifications app had a variety of tabs on the left-hand side, like Game Alerts, Downloads, Uploads, and more. We’ve condensed all of the tabs to a single simplified list, making it easier to see all of your notifications all at-a-glance.

You can also quickly access the Notification settings from the Options Menu to turn off or customize which pop-up notifications appear on your screen, so you’re only being notified about your top priorities.

Post on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds

We’re adding the ability to post directly into the Activity Feed, which appears in a variety of places across the console, including What’s New. Under What’s New, you’ll see a new option to post things like text, screenshots, and gifs directly into your Activity Feed. You can also tag games or other users to make sure they don’t miss your post. It’s a great way to show off your greatest triumphs.

Tying into this new feature, Live from PlayStation will show screenshots that users uploaded to PSN as a Public Activity, so you can show off your best gameplay moments not only to your friends, but to users around the globe.

3D Blu-rays on PlayStation VR

If you’re a fan of 3D movies, and you own PlayStation VR, we’ve got good news — this update adds the ability to view 3D movies in stereoscopic 3D directly on the PS VR headset. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!

There are more features included in 4.50, so make sure to keep an eye out for additional info, including launch timing, in the weeks to come.

  • Also can we get an official hub or some kind of support for external USB hubs?

The PS4’s security keeps resetting mine every 8 minutes which causes my headset (a PS product) to constantly disconnect. I’ve tried 5 hubs, all of them have this problem, even when they are powered devices that do not draw off the systems PSU.

  • Only up to 8GB really isn’t a lot though. Hopefully they intend to update that to higher limits later.

    • 8TB.. not GB

    • Holy crap you’re right. Sorry Buffalo, I must’ve misread (thats what happens when you’re tired I guess). Thanks man!

    • I was gonan say umm 8tb isnt a lot? Umm Ive use 4tb since 2013 well over 30 games and nowhere close to running outta of space 8tb is overkill… especially since Im 100% sure before y0u even get close to filling up 8tb PS5 will be out… as Im expecting to see it by 2019. I mean PS4 2013 3 years later PS4 Pro 3 years after that PS5 time spent total.. 6 years.. which seems about right based on the last console gen length.

Sure originally Sony said there wouldnt be a 6 year gen again (but back before PS2 launch they also said youd never need more than one system to play any playstation game./.. look how hats working out). However If they announce a PS5 a year after Pro release theye gonna piss people off, hat being said the logical step would be wait til 2019

  • External HDD + 3D Blu-Rays on PSVR, Sweet!! We Have a winner update.

  • Would love to see external HDD support come to the Playstation TV as well. Lack of affordable (or even available) large storage options is the primary thing that holds me back from buying Vita / PSP games.

  • Please Please Pllllllllllllllease for the love of god, do NOT remove the tabs on the notifications list. I do not want to have to wade through a bunch of random items to find my download progress notifications.

    • Can be solved with a filter option, and the ability to select certain filters only, and you get a little number under the unused filters when you get new notification (inside the Options menu when in the Notification Menu)

  • Please please please, one of these updates, add the ability to move tiles and pin then to a position in theenu bar

  • Simplified Notifications is a terrible idea. Now it will just be a slop fest of crap. Will you at least allow us an option to keep the Notifications categorized for those of us that don’t want a slopfest of unorganized notifications?

  • What good is extra space?? I’m on my 3rd PS account because the last two were hacked within a year and a half and Sony won’t give me my accounts back. So I don’t need space. By the time I get a few loaded onto my ps4, I just get hacked again.

  • Now, that’s what I call an update! Thank you, Sony.

  • Hi there my name is Danny Delacueva I was wondering if this update is gonna be for the ps4 pro is it gonna be for the ps4 or all ps4 s in general just got done checking my ps4 so I have no idea if other ps4 users got the update right on time or has it came out yet or not basically cause I have no idea what is the beta sign up at or what it was about but I was reading the page about what new things are coming to the ps4 and im hype about it just wanted some feed back if anyone on here knows anything if they can help me out im still new to ps4 basically so yes I m a noob ah ! so what tho I like ps4 a ton ! so thanks to anyone who can help me out !

  • Is this update out already or do you have to sign up with the beta I m kinda confused

  • Is this beta already out or ? cause I wanna get it ah ! anyone there to help me out when ever someone sees my message let me know

  • No clock in quick menu (right hand side)?

  • Code name Sasuke… SHARINGAN!

  • Will you be able to transfer content between internal and external hdd? that would be nice in the future though..

    • You can already transfer capture gallery content, but can’t view stuff on an external device without moving it onto the console.

It would be nice if they streamlined the game data transfer so I can move around games to my HDD and internal seamlessly.

  • I have a PS4 Pro and I’m trying to find ways to get 4k content on the system since the required internet streaming speed isn’t even available in my area. Will we be able to play 4k videos from an external HDD or is that something that is in the pipeline?

Of course 4k blu-ray support would be nice if possible.

    • This is where Sony will lose the console war imo, the PS3 sold so well because of the BR player.

By launching early and not containing a UHD drive they may have got some people with the “low” price tag and while they are still hyped about PSVR, but in the end Scorpio will come around with it’s UHD, backwards compatible, cheaper online service(with better free games), better performing AND cheaper console and will take over the sales. We still have a long few years left of this generation and Microsoft has plenty of time to make a comeback.

Most people dont have internet speeds to support 4K video seamlessly, and even so, nothing compares to the physical UHD, and I mean aren’t the big spenders usually the kind of people who like to buy the collectors sets of movies /TV series physically? Surely you’d want to make those people happy…

  • Sony !!!

BIG please see the web-browser support as:
    .
1.) Keyboard on the BT – always after switch on / wake up I have to remove the record of BT-keyboard and add to PS4 again. Will it be working OK ??? Keyboard I also use to type text on chat.
    .
2.) Mouse – BT or USB – will be ever working ???
    .
    3. Web browser – the most websites recognize PS4 as mobile – when you update User-Agent ???

  • Great! However, I want Bluetooth audio support.
I didn’t buy a Bluetooth stereo for nothing, you know…

  • Dear Sony

Will you please add an option to Schedule Downloads for a later time? These sudden, unexpected 20gig game updates eat so much of our data for us capped internet users.

    • You know you can disable automatic updates and only download updates for games when you want to? Although I agree it would be good if we could be prompted first, so we know about updates for games we haven’t played recently, but can choose whether to begin downloading it or not, even set some games to always stay updated no matter what, and some will prompt for scheduling, some will never.

    • Perfect Idea !!!
I also want option – [x] download games/DLC/etc on stanby only.

  • I have games still in the shrink wrap and ones I’ve had to delete off the HDD already, finally external HDD support!!

  • Finally no more deleting games to make more space

  • I’ve been asking for External HDD support took a long time but it’s here and Ty

Now you’ve still added some other nifty features but

    – No Video chat service ( skype)
    – No Trophy Tracking implemented
    – No Auto Sync your trophies you still have to manually do it
    – No better customization for your profile page ( like being able to add licks to your Youtube or Twitch channel etc..)

I do hope the additional Features will be as good and Ty for sending me the Beta 4.50 glad to be part to test again

    • Microsoft owns Skype, so you’re out of luck there, but hopefully video calls or something can be implemented.

Social media links on profiles is a great idea.

    • Skype is M$
Trophy tracking is up to game devs to support it.
You’re on Plus.. You already auto sync in rest mode.
Promote your stuff in about me. (Not like anybody is going to subscribe & watch your videos)

    • Skype is not the only one program to talking via net. There are other.

  • The custom wall paper is a great deal but you should make it so you can take a short video saved on your PS4 and make that a dynamic theme

  • Doesnt say whether we can use multiple external HDDs though

  • Thanks for 3D movies on PSVR. If anything happens to my TV, it’s nice to know I have some back-up for the 90+ movies that I own. Another reason to justify my PSVR purchase.

  • Add an option for notifications area in the quick menu please.

  • Great news!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!

  • User name change please?

  • Aw come on, what did I upgrade my internal drive to 4tb for now? :-P

  • How about a fix for the psvr blackout issue or at the very least an acknowledgement.

  • Thank You Sony, at least the Wallpaper Customization, I hope that you focus on Multimedia and Storage music, videos , Photos and launch some new Apps like Waether , new , news about Games and Companies like was Before with Christina Lee, and some new Stuff. Please Change the start up sequence color White to Blue on the Hardware console. Please

  • Thank you so much for the HDD external! Just at the right time with all these games coming out

  • Thank You Sony, at least the Wallpaper Customization, I hope that you focus on Multimedia and Storage music, videos , Photos and launch some new Apps like Weather , news, news about Games and Companies like was Before with Christina Lee, and some new Stuff. Please Change the start up sequence color White to Blue on the Hardware console. Please

  • Has anyone downloaded this. Just done it. Was interested in the 3d bit aswell as the external HDD. But just playing a 3d video through VR shows me what I can see on screen. Split screen. Any Ideas. reagrds.

  • The custom Wallpaper should Allow data from USB .JPG ?? I hope so and not only the games Im playing screenshoots . Please

  • Thanks Sony!!

  • I signed up,when is the beta starting?

  • Any updates to Media Player? At least audio track/subtitles selection? UI improvements? It works but a bit limited.

  • When will u add feature to delete betas and demos? My library is full of them that I get confused sometimes. As a result I just stopped downloading betas and demos. What’s point of having things that wouldn’t work after deadline?

  • Cant wait to try this out. I guess for the first time I wasnt selected for the firmware beta test……surprised really…..I own a Ps1,Ps2,Ps3, Ps4, Ps4P, PsP, PsV and Im getting PsVr………. and Ive been selected almost everytime….just have to wait I guess with everyone else. Cant wait to finally make my own wallpaper.

  • This is great, I’m super stoked for the external HDD support. I’ve upgraded my HDD to a 1TB and still have the old data on the 500GB, would I, if placed in an external enclosure supporting USB 3.0, be able to pull my old saves from there? Also something I’d like to see its a crazy idea…remote play the PS3 on the PS4… I have my PS3 in a different room, and of course a decent library of PS3 games… I’d like to be able to spin up some games when I’m on the PS4… Or utilize my PS3 like my PSTV or PSVita and remote play the PS4 on the PS3… Mostly I’d like to stream my PS3 library to my Twitch and YouTube… Remote play is very convenient.

  • when can we change our goddamn names

  • … and yet the PS Vita memory cards are still 5x market average.

  • NICE this is what I wanted from launch but oh well I have a question will I be able to copy over data that is on the system’s HDD to the external ? or do I have redownload the game?

  • This update is amazing really hoping I got in to check out the PSVR 3D bluray support!

  • Aweomse!! Please Sony, Give us SBS video support soon. The youtube app has a ton of side by side videos that dont work on it.

  • The update sounds absolutely fantastic, about time!
Setting Screenshots as wallpapers was a long awaited yet obvious feature to have-very welcomed now.
However, Sony should allow users the option to CLEAR and remove all notifications.

Also when setting custom wallpapers we should be given an option to have different wallpapers for lower and upper sections of the main menu, like themes.
    Please make it happen.

  • Are we ever going to be able to listen to a music album with the tracks in the correct order? (not alphabetical)

  • I just installed a 2TB hard drive in my PS4 last week, and NOW you guys add support for External HDs? Someone please tell me there are benefits to using an internal hard drive than external. Could’ve saved $30 and the possibility of using the external HD for other purposes in the future.

    • turdweasels: Internal will always be faster. Also, most external HDD are 5400rpm spin speed. For an internal drive, you could use a SSD, a Hybrid drive, or just a standard HDD.

    • I don’t know if internal would really be faster… The internal SATA II interface on the regular PS4 is rated at 3 Gbps, and USB 3 is rated at 5 Gbps. I read the PS4 Pro has a SATA III interface rated at 6 Gbps.

The way I see it, a SSD connected via USB 3 would be faster.

    • Also, the benefit to an external drive is that you don’t have to backup, turn off, open, remove old smaller hard drive, install new bigger hard drive, turn on, reinstall system software from USB stick, restore from backup in order to return to the status quo.

It would be literally just plug and play.
