PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Features Detailed

Starting today, those of you selected for our beta program will get an early peek at some of the new features coming to PS4 with our next major system software update, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke). If you signed up for the beta and were chosen, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download and get started.

Even if you’re not participating in the beta, we still wanted to give you a quick glance of the key features that will be rolling out with this update. We’re refining the user interface of PS4 even further, and adding highly requested features like external HDD support and custom wallpapers.

External HDD Support

It’s easy to upgrade the HDD that came with your PS4, but if you’re still looking for more storage space on the console, we’ve got you covered. With this update, you have the option to store content to an external HDD. Just plug a USB 3.0 HDD into your PS4, and voilà, you now have more space on the console.

PS4 System Software Update 4.50 external HDD support

This is compatible with HDDs up to 8TB in size. You can download and install applications directly to your extra storage, and the saved contents are easily manageable through the settings menu.

Also, all the applications saved in the external HDD will appear in the Content Launcher of the Home Screen so it’s easy to keep track of what apps you launched recently.

Please note: user save files are still stored locally on your PS4 HDD. Only games and applications are stored externally.

Custom Wallpapers

This update adds the ability to set your favorite in-game screenshot as the background image for PS4’s home screen. Drop-shadows on text, and the option to dim the Function Area, will help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright.

You can also edit screenshots using Photo Mode in Sharefactory to make your one-and-only custom wallpaper.

Quick Menu Refresh

As you may know, in the last system update we overhauled the PS4 Quick Menu feature (the menu that appears after a long press of the PS button on DualShock 4).

This update brings additional improvements to make it even more accessible. Now the Quick Menu will cover even less of your gameplay screen, and you’ll be able to access handy Party features via Online Friends, like creating new parties, inviting friends, and joining parties, without transitioning to the separate Party app. The goal is to keep you in the game — and not stuck in menus.

Simplified Notification List

Before this update, the Notifications app had a variety of tabs on the left-hand side, like Game Alerts, Downloads, Uploads, and more. We’ve condensed all of the tabs to a single simplified list, making it easier to see all of your notifications all at-a-glance.

You can also quickly access the Notification settings from the Options Menu to turn off or customize which pop-up notifications appear on your screen, so you’re only being notified about your top priorities.

Post on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds

We’re adding the ability to post directly into the Activity Feed, which appears in a variety of places across the console, including What’s New. Under What’s New, you’ll see a new option to post things like text, screenshots, and gifs directly into your Activity Feed. You can also tag games or other users to make sure they don’t miss your post. It’s a great way to show off your greatest triumphs.

Tying into this new feature, Live from PlayStation will show screenshots that users uploaded to PSN as a Public Activity, so you can show off your best gameplay moments not only to your friends, but to users around the globe.

3D Blu-rays on PlayStation VR

If you’re a fan of 3D movies, and you own PlayStation VR, we’ve got good news — this update adds the ability to view 3D movies in stereoscopic 3D directly on the PS VR headset. Grab some popcorn and enjoy!

There are more features included in 4.50, so make sure to keep an eye out for additional info, including launch timing, in the weeks to come.

  • I really like the new update with the interface more adaptable. BUT THE ONE THING THAT I HATE ABOUT THIS UPDATE IS THE FACT OF THE SIMPLIFIED NOTIFICATION SCREEN. THAT SUCKS. how you incorporate the old interface (v.4.07) notification screen with the new interface;. THe update on sharing with the whats new tab is great. Also when are we gunna be able to delete our notifications in the notification tab. I have things going back to when i brought my PS4.

  • Fix the issue with the drive ejecting game and movie discs while on playback, its so annoying!
Can you also make available 3D Blu-rays playback on regular 3D screens? great update though!

    • 3D BluRay is already supported on TVs.

It is 4K/UHD BluRays that PlayStation 4 (and unforgivably PS4 Pro) can’t play – whether 2D or 3D.

  • i was waiting for this features for long time, finally we are moving in right direction

  • This is a great update!

  • I’m going back to previous OS. 4.5 has brought way too many bugs. It won’t even recognise my TV! So I’m having to use the PSVR to downgrade, the image is jumping around constantly and controller button presses take ages to result in anything changing on the display.

This beta software is clearly not yet suitable for public use. If I didn’t have PSVR, I would have a completely useless PS4 now.

Not impressed and advise extreme caution to others.

  • I keep seeing everywhere it’s written “HDD support” not external hard drive, does this means it’s limited to HDDs and excluding SSDs ?
I know it’s not the best idea to use SSDs on a console but, I was planning to buy SSDs and I’m afraid that there are devices that have compatibility issues with them.

    • SSD is just a different type of HDD.

If the SSD supports USB 3, it will be fine.

    • PS4 supports SSDs in every way, especially with the Pro now having SATA3 for the internal drive and USB 3.0 for external drives. That’ll allow the internal drive, if switched to be an SSD, to perform a lot closer to what it would on a PC (which they easily max out the SATA3 bus these days if using a SATA3 SSD, but PCIe x4 m.2 SSDs even beat SATA3 by 5x in some cases these days… again that is only on PC).

I have an SSD in my PS4 Pro, and I don’t even have the 4.5 firmware yet, but it greatly improves the load times and even overall performance in some games. An SSD connected via USB 3.0 would be less efficient than one using SATA3, but still quite fast in theory.

  • Does anybody have a clue when this is coming out the release date?

  • I liked that the notification menu had tabs. Now everything will be in one place and that can be kind of confusing.

Also, when does the update come out?

  • as for External HDD Support how big my 3.0 HDD have to get 8 TB?

  • Now they just need to add emulator support for PlayStation 1 and 2 games so we can play them from our disks that we already bought and they need to let us play our already purchased PlayStation one and two games that were bought from the PlayStation Store digitally on PS3 and Vita without having to pay extra and the experience for PlayStation 4 would be almost perfect

  • I like everything that im seeing, but can we keep the notifications tap how it is? i like having my downloads, uploads, notifications, and everything else in that tab(currently) all neat as how it is. Well that’s at least how i like it. As for everything else though, 10/10!

  • Sounds awesome

  • Could I still backup my game saves on thumbdrive since I can’t put game saves on the External Hard Drive?

  • I can watch 3D blu-rays with a VR headset?? Hmm, might be time to pick one up.

  • This update is amazing, I really like it. If you could add in the future a direct access of PS blog on the PS4 menu or in What’s new, that would be nice. Also, the notifications pop ups can be more stylish, something like Xbox, it’s so much pretty than a flat message.

  • What about 3rd party bluetooth headset support?

  • This update is looking really good, Especially the External HD addition. Finally I wont need to keep deleting a game because i run low on hard drive space. And the custom background is pretty cool too.

  • Ive been using the beta for a couple days and its great

  • I can’t believe it I was just about to push the checkout button to get the 3tb kit from amazon but checked my email 1st. I had just gotten a 2 tb toshiba 2 external hd and was wondering why I couldnt just use this one. It saved me 129.00 and a bunch of work. As it is I just had to delete a bunch of stuff to play uncharted 4. I live11,000 ft in mtns above denver so i play my ps4 a lot due to all the snow. Thank u so much sony.

  • Whooo External Hard drives yessssssssssssss,… and also custom wallpapers. xoxo can’t wait for the update

  • I cannot wait for this update, now I can wait a little longer for a new hard drive.

  • The only thing I wish you guys could include with this update is a notification button that allows you to select certain friends to see when they go offline… Because it was helpful on the ps3 and it would go well since we have the notification of when they get online….
If you guys ever bring back more games, I would love to have Slugfest be brought back…. Atleast I have my other favorite game GTA SA… Thanks for us this “Quick Menu”

  • Can’t wait until this new update drops. My only question is, will the external hhd be only for the ps4 or can we use it for our pc and other consoles also?

  • That’s all cool how about when I pop in a Blu-ray Disc it pops up the name of the movie like it did on the PS3 also is PlayStation tv ever going to get Netflix

  • Backwards capabilities would rain glory down upon us all. I love most of my ps3 titles. PLEASE allow us to play them on our ps4.

  • The new update sounds good but I’d like a wider range of Bluetooth connectivity. I have wireless *SONY* headphones that connect via Bluetooth that aren’t supported by the ps4’s firmware. (Or software, I forget) anyways, all I ask of you is more Bluetooth options.

  • Just do it.
I really need more space tired of deleting my games. Just do the update plzzzz

  • please why can’t I log into my psn on my ps4, but it connects to the internet….

  • 4.50 version is the latest system software i had 4.07 and it tells me that i have the latest version of the system software but i don’t see any difference on my ps4…i just wanna know more can someone tell me what i suppose to do?…

  • Still haven’t increased party size we have only been asking for 3 years but i guess we couldn’t expect them to listen to the people that maoe them there money

    • more than 8 people? That would get annoying so quick… more than 6 people is hard to concentrate with all the talking lol

  • How about backward compatibility

  • Would be really cool if you could use Playstation Live while still being able to see your game. For example, queuing up a game of rocket league, and while waiting, being able to browse Playstation Live, then when the game is found and done loading, you can switch to game full screen. This would give you something to do while waiting, without risking being AFK in-game.

  • FINALLY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE SUPPORT

  • Any idea when this is rolling out?

  • Is there an actual post spot for beta users? Having a difficult time navigating through this site.

  • Interesting update. Only problem I see with the external hard drive idea is the PS4 does not have that many USB ports. They have a special on port on the back for the camera, and two on the front. All of my ports are used. Camera. Keyboard (For FFXIV) and USB charging cable because the battery life on the Dual Shock four is surprisingly short unlike the PS3’s. Maybe its time to look into getting a USB 3.0 hard drive. :)

I am not sure if you can do this with a PS4, but when my PS3 failed, I could not take its hard drive out and stick it in the new PS3. So I lost a lot of saved data (more than the cloud allowed uploaded). Oh they say its easy copy data from one PS to another, but that assumes that the PS3 is still working… Anyway, I think that if its not allowed already, hard drives should be transferable.

  • My only question is will it be able to use any USB hard drive or will only certain brands be compatible?

  • this update is pretty cool but needs more additions, like the ability to ave photos & videos on to the system via external storage like the ps3

  • External HDD??? No way! Thank You, SONY! Will it means I can download, install and play games directly from external HDD without touching internal?

  • Frankly, i think this is awesome!. But still lacking backwards compatibility and the use of the PS3 controllers on PS4, i like that there is beta programs like this (I did not know) but in my opinion having an OPEN BETA program and user name changing. Also i think dynamic banning and de- banning would be nice instead of banning IP’s directly it would be nice that you ban he actual account or PS4 system in question, i’ve had this happen to me once. Thankfully i am a bleeding edge tech enthusiast and could resolve this issue without having to contact my ISP, but my point still stands. I think Sony has moved in the right direction but a little too cautious? maybe and you can beat the XBOX pretty easily you just have to listen to the people and deliver because if you listen and don’t deliver then what are we doing?

    Regards

    Joshua.

  • I have some questions about this update, firstly are brand new disc-based games installed/stored on the PS4 or the External Hard Drive? (assuming the External HDD is already connected). Secondly will there be an option to revert back to the old notifications set up if we’ve become dissatisfied with the new one? And lastly will you be able to access Messages through the updated quick menu? Thanks

(Not update related) Also for communities is there some way to make a moderator the new owner of the community?

  • how do i sign up

  • What about the ability to change your PSN ID

  • I’m liking this new update adding support for external HDD however the notification area is perfect as it is. Why do you now want to jumble all notifications in the same area, that’s just a backward move as I like seeing my “downloads” and “uploads” etc separate.

  • what is with people and wanting backwards capability that feature is not worth it anymore, if you want to play old games get a ps3 and down that backwards capability is a stupid idea that just need to die already like The Xbox one

  • Finally Ex HDD I have a 5Tb just waiting

  • I wish they could add download scheduling because some of us only get data free from 1am to 7am.

  • the Ext HDD update are awesome , just need to know what best compatible HDD out there , since there are so many models

  • So here’s my take on this so far. External support continually crashes my PS4. Don’t get me wrong. I can get the thing to recognize the external HDD just fine. I can even transfer games to it. The problem comes in trying to play the games. Load times are ridiculous. And that’s even if I can get them to load. Half the time it freezes my PS, gives me some error code, them resets my system.

  • sick im liking the sound of this upodate. It sounds DOPE
