PS4 System Software Update 4.50 Out Tomorrow

External HDD support arrives alongside a host of other features, including voice chat for Remote Play.

Our next major system software update for PS4, version 4.50 (codenamed Sasuke), rolls out tomorrow. We’ve already shared some of the key features last month, like external HDD support and custom wallpapers, but that wasn’t all this update has to offer. Here’s a look at some additional features heading to your system soon.

Improved 2D Images on PS VR
If you’re playing a game in PS VR and you return to the PS4 home screen, you may notice that the resolution looks lower than normal on the TV Social Screen. Following this update, you’ll find that the resolution of the system screen displayed on your TV is significantly better when you’re out of VR mode.

Also, the resolution of Cinematic Mode on PS VR will improve — if your PS VR screen size is set to Small or Medium, the frame rate of content viewed in Cinematic Mode goes up from 90Hz to 120Hz with this update.

Voice Chat for Remote Play
We’re adding voice chat when using Remote Play on Windows PC, Mac or an Xperia device. This is especially useful if you’ve got a gaming session planned with your friends, but you’re away from your system. You can switch your mic on and off via the microphone icon on the Tool Bar of the Remote Play app.

Off Console Availability
We have a variety of off-console apps and features that make communication with other gamers easier, like the PlayStation App and PS Messages. We’re adding an icon, shaped like a smartphone, which indicates a player is logged into PSN but away from their system.

Boost Mode (for PlayStation 4 Pro only)
PS4 Pro gets a new feature in this update called Boost Mode. This feature has been designed to provide better performance for select legacy titles that have not been patched to take advantage of the PS4 Pro’s faster CPU and its faster and double-sized GPU.

This can provide a noticeable frame rate boost to some games with variable frame rates, and can provide frame rate stability for games that are programmed to run at 30 Hz or 60 Hz. Depending on the game, the increased CPU speed may also result in shorter load times. You can turn on Boost Mode by going to Settings > System.

Keep in mind that Boost Mode is not guaranteed to work with all titles. Turning the setting off will allow the game to be played in a mode that replicates the standard PS4.

PS Messages and Communities app Updates
We’re also updating the PS Messages (Android/iOS) and PS Communities (Android/iOS) apps tomorrow with a few handy features.

  • When you receive a Party invitation from your friends on PS Messages, now you can respond with a quick reply, “I’ll join later” or “Sorry, I can’t join,” when you want to get back to them ASAP.
  • On the Communities app, you can now easily check the PSN service status under Settings > View Status of PSN Services.
  • Also on the Communities app, iOS users can tell at a glance if there are any new posts in their community by checking the badge app icon (the number in a red circle at the top-right corner of the app’s icon).

We can’t wait for you to get your hands on all these new features, and make sure to let us know what you think in the comments. We’re listening and always appreciate your feedback!

  • What size will the update be? I plan on installing via USB

  • loving the external HD support. 2 TB drive in my PS4 and I’ve used half of it, and that’s being picky with games. Now I dont’ have to be…. I fill it up I’ll just get a 2 TB external.

  • This is so great!! External drive support is a game changer and now I can go FULL digital and worry about buying actual game disc.

Yet Xbox 1 had this from day 1 lmao

    • What’s your point? The fact that X1 had this from day one doesn’t matter at all.

    • Maybe PS will copy Microsoft on a few more things. Like letting you delete your group MSG so they don’t come back as soon as you get a new text. Or maybe let you change your profile name.

  • Excellent stuff!

Great to see the PS4 4.50 system update out earlier than expected.
With the PSN mobile phone community app. When do community owners get the control they have on the console the same as in the mobile phone app. Like changing message of tha day, ect….

  • cool beans i’m in the beta already however i was hoping there was some sort of surprise for those of us who were in the beta :( ah well. Update is cool so far.

  • I thought this update was also going to allow external harddrives?

  • to bad no update to fix the HDR passthrough on the PU of the psvr hate having to keep unplugging and replugging

  • ShadowZombie1030

Still waiting to be able to change my username

  • BIG question here: is it required that the external hard drives have their own power source (which are actually getting harder to find these days), like with the media HDD?

If so, you REALLY need to tell people in these blog posts before people spend hundreds of dollars on HDDs that will NOT work with their PS4.

    • 3.5″ hard drives needs to be powered with an external power source as they need 12v to boot up. 2.5″ drives uses 5v, and usb3.0 gives enough power to let it boot up.

  • Still no ability to play PSOne Classics though. I just want to import all those PSOne games I bought on PSN when I had a PS3. I can’t be the only one who wants that right?

Glad they added external HDD support though. That’s a nice touch.

  • This is awesome i am exited for voice chat on remote play.

But I have a question do Custom Wallpapers still come in this update I was really looking forward to this??

    • Yes, wallpapers were part of the initial 4.5 Firmware announcement.

      https://blog.playstation.com/2017/02/03/ps4-system-software-update-4-50-features-detailed/

      “Custom Wallpapers
This update adds the ability to set your favorite in-game screenshot as the background image for PS4’s home screen. Drop-shadows on text, and the option to dim the Function Area, will help keep the system icons and texts on the home screen clearly visible even if the background image you selected is super bright.

You can also edit screenshots using Photo Mode in Sharefactory to make your one-and-only custom wallpaper.”

  • Are they aware pig this annoying glitch in a Party Chat that doesn’t show you are playing a game when you actually are? And sometimes when it does show you are playing a game and you get off the game it still shows you are playing that game! OR you are playing a game and it shows you are playing that game and you switch games and it still shows you are playing the first game even though you aren’t! This glitch causes confusion in chat rooms everyday when someone asks me “hey what’s up why aren’t you playing anything?” And i say “I’ve been playing Horizon for hours now” and they say “oh in this party it says you aren’t playing anything” and then i have to explain this glitch you guys have. I’ve gotten to a point where I’m not even explaining it to people anymore just fix this. Same thing for Ps Vita titles barely show in party chats either..

  • Let me guess. Still no way to change gamer tag??

  • Any chance for custom menu controls in a later update? It’s weird having different regions still have the different enter and cancel buttons. Would help for some of my international friends. (I know you can switch the controller’s button input, but that does it for literally everything.)

  • i like to clarify and make sure i understand, We can voice chat on on our computer now with our friends via party chat or in game chat?

  • Will this update also include 3d blu ray support for VR?

  • Please please pleeeeaaase do not add the terrible notifications screen. It’s super messy and I’m worried you guys haven’t acknowledged it on the forum…

  • I can’t wait for everything that’s coming out and especially more space.

  • Rapturesassassin

Still no way to delete or hide games from are library like Xbox 1 does come on sony. Besides external harddrive support nothing on this update is worth it. Guess i’ll be making my Xbox 1 my go to gaming console and my Ps4 for exclusives only.

  • very nice update but nothing for me

  • Yahoo for the external HDD support. I had to delete two games last week in order to install Horizon Zero Dawn

  • This is a really good update however, still no remote play for iOS!!!!!!!!
Come on guys, it’d be so useful to have this on my iOS devices, why can’t you expand it outside of the Xperia phones?

  • Is there a list of the “select” legacy titles that will utilize Boost Mode?

  • Can Boost mode be turned on and off while in a game, or does it require closing the application to make the change? It would be nice to see an immediate change, but if you have to close out a game just to delete a save file, then I have my doubts.

  • Looks like a good update! I’d really like to see a facebook livestream option soon. It’s great streaming to youtube and twitch and i think it would make a great addition!

  • You guys at Sony have been doing an amazing job and have clearly been listening to fan-feedback. Keep up the great work.

  • Nice!

One main question about the external hhd support:

Will the PS4 be able to handle both internal and external drives at the same time like with Xbox One? If not, that makes the internal storage basically useless.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Beta users, was the custom wallpaper limited to screenshots only, or could you use files from USB?

  • Obviously this PS4 system software update 4.50 is a fing lie because a new system software update for PS4 has never been released in 2017. Last system software update for PS4 is 4.07 released on December 8th 2016. Used 2 b February when the new system software update was released obviously something is fing wrong with sony. They didn’t even release good system software updates 2 keep the PS3 freezing up. Sony obviously hated the PS3 because it froze up a lot even when watching netflix. So i believe this 2 b bull.

    • If it’s an older system your thermal paste could be very crusty and not transferring heat properly. It could also be due to poor maintenance, your console’s fan outlets could be blocked by a lot of dust. Usually freezing issues on console and PC is due to too much heat. The system shuts down the CPU and hangs the OS to prevent serious damage.

  • So this means, External HDD Support ran into issues discovered during the 4.5 Beta. Glad they do Beta for system updates now. Hopefully next one after this will have the External HDD Support many are waiting for.

  • eddyliversausage

All we need now is support with remote play on phones other than sonys

  • Will the Android Remote Play app ever come to all Android devices? I would love to use it on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, or tablet when I’m not at home.

    • @Pross81I remoteplay on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge with the unofficial app on XDA, use Google to find. It will of course be updated eventually after the firmware update.

  • What would be the size of the update…???

  • just curious i was in the beta do i have too re download this ?

  • Looking great! Congrats guys!

  • Bring back my microphone. I use my beats head phones and they stopped working after ur last update

  • This update is awesome looking, but what I want to talk about is Sony can you get remote play on iOS or is it not possible.
    Please respond

  • Is it going to fix the rest/ standby mode issues?

    • @jab__661 what issues? I rest/standby all the time and have had no problems. Unless it’s an always persistent online game that is, Destiny, Division, For Honor are always online. Those particular online only games makes sense why there are issues as standby/rest turn off online functions for everything except patches for games.

  • I have a question about the external hdd support. I am in the beta and I used a small hdd to test out the support. Can I get a bigger one and copy the data to it or do I need to reinstall the games to the hdd?

  • its a great improve ! But you guys need to add some more features for PS4 Stander version ! :D !

  • Nice update guys, keep up the good work!

  • Really excited for this! Ironically enough I probably won’t use the biggest feature of external HDD for storage, but it’s awesome that is coming for those who want to use it, and there will be many who do. I’m actually really happy about the voice chat over remote play! I know that will come in handy!

  • What about 3D blu ray support?

  • Still missing basic functions that my ps3 had.. And STILL NO ps1 support like ALL previous consoles had. Gotta build a pc if i wanna stream ps1 games. This may be the last playstation gen i own which is ashamed because ive owned all of them, even the portables.

  • Can we please have the old school ps store back, or at least a newly improved version?

  • Can I ask why people are so willing to change their PSN names? You can also make a new PSN account and put the new and old one but registered with the console as primairy. You can use all your games on the new PSN account. So what am I not seeing here?

  • Please Sony please I’m begging you to let us change our psn names I will pay for it i know a lot of people want to do it so please make it happen!!!

  • Still looking for the option to add overlays when streaming along with camera display location.

  • Will our systems update automatically if it’s in rest mode?
