Lastly, for the collectors out there, I am happy to tell you that we have entered a partnership with ESC-Toys to create Nathan Drake vinyl toys. The man behind the design is Esc-Toy’s founder/designer Erick Scarecrow. Erick is well known in the industry for creating some of the most sought after customs, vinyl and plush collectibles out there. He is also well known for the work he has done for recording artists, including the late and great Jam Master Jay of RUN DMC, Bad Boy Entertainment, Def Jam, and others. I have included a few images of the vinyls below.

Greetings all … The Naughty Dogs have received a lot of positive feedback on their Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune trailers. You might have seen this trailer post on IGN last week, and since people are buzzing about it we thought it would be cool to do a Q&A with the trailer’s creator, Taylor Kurosaki. Taylor is the Video and Dialogue Editor at Naughty Dog, and is responsible for creating all of their trailers, which you can read more about in the Q&A included below.

We thought it was interesting to learn about how much Taylor focuses on music as his inspiration. That said, he was cool enough to share the link to his personal music blog. Music is a big hobby of his and he thought it might be something that you would be interested in.

Enjoy!

Q&A with Taylor Kurosaki

How did you come up with the concept for this trailer?
Well, this was the fourth official trailer for UDF I worked on. [Perhaps we can link to the others here...] The first three were really about conveying who Nathan Drake is, the nature of the threats he encounters and the scope of the artifacts he is after. In those trailers I really wanted to give the viewer a sense of this foreboding world Nate is exploring, so they were ominous in tone and vibe. For this post-launch trailer, I wanted to completely flip it around and play up the pulp adventure fun of Uncharted. I was always blown away by the ‘painterly’ quality of the screenshots of the game. I thought they had such a cool comic book look to them, even though they were straight from the PS3, with no retouching whatsoever. So it was really a no brainer, make a pulp-comic trailer comprised solely of screenshots. I want to give a big shout out to everyone on the team who spent the countless hours capturing those beautiful stills, especially Eric Baldwin who recently captured a whole bunch more specifically for this trailer.

Did you enjoy getting to work with the DJ Shadow track?
Oh yeah. I’ve been a fan of Shadow’s since Entroducing. Our Producer Sam Thompson and I had discussed the idea of working with him for some time, maybe as far back as Jak 3 or Jak X. I think we both had envisioned licensing one of his existing tracks for a trailer or to use in one of the games, so I was blown away that I not only got to finally work with his music, but that he was actually producing an original song. DJ Shadow is a “digger”- he finds bits and pieces of music which interest him and completely deconstructs them, reconfiguring and re-realizing them into something different and completely Shadow. He took that process and applied it to Greg Edmonson’s original Uncharted score, and that’s the music we set the trailer to.

How important of a role does the selection of music play in making a trailer?
For me it’s everything. It all comes from the music. I can’t even begin envisioning the concept without proper music as inspiration. The first two Uncharted trailers used the amazing and sweeping orchestral music from our game. (Thanks to Greg Edmonson and Jonathan Mayer.) For the third trailer, the mood was darker and more sinister, so the track Dissolved Girl by Massive Attack was used. For Jak X, I got to work with Queens of the Stone Age and Billy Howerdel of A Perfect Circle, as those artists really suited that game. For Jak3, it was Kidneythieves, as their aesthetic really matched the desolate and harsh world Jak was thrown into.

Who are you more like? Nathan Drake or Victor Sullivan?
Unfortunately, I don’t think I can grow a Sully-quality mustache, so I’ll go with Nate. Why can’t I choose Elena?

Besides your own, what is your favorite game trailer of all time?
It’s got to be the Gears of War Mad World Trailer. It’s a great example of how you can pair visuals with music to create an entirely new meaning than either element has on it’s own.

The ’90s! Yep, this disc is dropping on March 18. You’ll see from the full track list below, we’ve got a very eclectic mix of music, as we wanted to try and represent all of the major music movements that happened in the ’90s. There’s something for everyone, and some real classics to boot!

With all SingStar products, we start off the process by defining parameters for our song list, and SingStar ’90s was no exception. However, this proved to be more challenging than usual, as everybody we asked had their own idea about the ’90s — it wasn’t as clearly defined as if you asked them about the ’80s. But, that’s ultimately where we got our inspiration from. The decade was many different things to many different people, so our track list had to reflect that. Grunge, rap, pop, boy bands, hip hop, rock — it’s all in there, and we hope you like it.

How about you guys… What were the ’90s for you? What’s your favorite track on this list? And yes, all you wondering what’s up with SingStar PS3, click here to get the latest from our interview with IGN.

In celebration of tomorrow’s launch of Assassin’s Creed for PS3, last week Ubisoft and SCEA hosted a red carpet event at Opera, one of the hottest night clubs in Los Angeles. Hundreds of attendees and an impressive contingent of celebrities turned up, including, Greg Grunberg (Heroes), John Hensley (Nip/Tuck), Lauren Conrad (The Hills), Masi Oka (Heroes), Shawn Pyfrom (Desperate Housewives) and Zachary Levi (Chuck).

They were on hand to get exclusive hands-on time with the game before launch. Heroes’ Kristen Bell, whose mysterious role is an important part of the game’s storyline, co-hosted the event and spent the evening dancing to DJ Cubeechee who opened up the set on the turntables and DJ Vice who closed the party down – much to everyone’s dismay. Check out a few photos from the event, and be sure to pick up the game when it hits stores tomorrow.

And if you haven’t seen it before, watch the Assassin’s Creed PS3 TV spot here.

A few of us just got to New Orleans for <a href="http://www.voodoomusicfest.com/2007/index.html"target=_"blank">Voodoo Music Experience. We have sponsored the event for the past 8 years because, as a company, we believe that music and art are a very important part of life.

We spent Thursday morning at the <a href="http://www.chnola.org/"target=_"blank">New Orleans Children’s Hospital outfitting the kids with PlayStation gear and having some good old fun playing SingStar and Buzz. I learned today that Destiny’s Child’s, “Survivor,” is one popular SingStar tune.

<a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/?author=5385"target=_"blank">Abigail from our Corporate Communications team organized the day and was on hand to present the hospital with a check from SCEA for $25,000. We also donated PS2 systems and games to help make their stay a little easier and happier. New Orleans’ very own Derrick Tabb from the <a href="http://www.rebirthbrassband.com/"target=_"blank">Rebirth Brass Band, <a href="http://www.tromboneshorty.com/"target=_"blank">Trombone Shorty and the Lieutenant Governor Mitch Landrieu also popped in to play with the kids.

Thanks to the staff at the hospital for a great experience. Please keep these kids in your thoughts; they are truly some of the most amazing PlayStation fans that I have ever met.

We’ll be in New Orleans all weekend – so if you want to get hands-on with some new and upcoming PlayStation games, stop by the <a href="http://www.voodoomusicfest.com/2007/experience_map/"target=_"blank">PlayStation Experience Truck at City Park. Stay tuned for more Voodoo highlights!
We also demonstrated how the folks at Insomniac are really tapping into the PS3′s capabilities with this title. Check out the video below, it captures the various stages of animation that scenes pass through over a few weeks. Oddly enough, this progression is strangely reminiscent of the generational improvement of PS1 to 2 to 3!

The game is looking spectacular and we think you’ll enjoy the upcoming coverage and media that will appear on all the gaming sites on Friday. Let me tease you with this: imagine Ratchet disguised as a pirate!

This weekend, PlayStation took center stage at Lollapalooza in Chicago. In addition to participating in various show events, we invited media to the Windy City to experience our holiday social game lineup. On Friday night, we took over the House of Blues and announced the November 13th launch date of SingStar PS3 and the first 15 of 30 songs that will be on the Bluray disc. The best part of the night was the contest. Six journalists got the chance to try and sing their way to a PS3 and an early copy of SingStar PS3. After narrowing it down to the top three, each then had to do their best rendition of Been Caught Stealing by Jane’s Addiction. We recorded the performances via PLAYSTATION Eye and Perry Farrell made a surprise visit to pick the winner. Congratulations to Jose Sanchez of Electric Playground who was crowned the king of SingStar – if only you could have seen him sing the encore with Perry as all of us screamed along in the background. Congrats to second place winner Greg Miller of IGN and third place winner Sterling McGarvey of GameSpy. You guys rock!
