Following its debut at PlayStation’s February 20th event in New York City, DualShock 4 has emerged at E3 in near-final form. Though DualShock 3 has proven to be a capable and dependable wireless controller for years with PlayStation 3, the PS4’s new weapon of choice is a clear improvement across the board. Here are some quick E3 2013 impressions.

For me, DualShock 4’s most impactful new feature is a subtle but shockingly satisfying detail: A glossy cross-hatched texture that wraps around the larger handles. This texture provides a snug, more comfortable grip on the device compared to DualShock 3’s slipperier feel. This is one of those things you’ll need to try for yourself to truly understand, but once you experience it there’s no going back. It’s a delight.

Then there are the redesigned and retuned analog sticks, which now boast a concave surface and slightly stiffer deadzone that makes it easier to maneuver the camera using small, precise movements. The surface is also more tactile, but not so much that it impedes your thumb’s ability to glide around the inner rim as your make subtle adjustments to your aiming reticule in shooters like Blacklight: Retribution. Much like DualShock 4’s new textured grips, the revamped analog sticks are a clear improvement to the classic design sported by DualShock 2 and DualShock 3. It’s no contest.

The directional pad — always a strength on PlayStation controllers — also impressed. It boasts a unified design that reminded me of PS Vita’s well-liked pad, only oversized and sporting a slightly more tactile finish. The depth and response of the pad felt just right: Not too clicky, not too mushy; not too deep, not too shallow. Meanwhile, the new Share and Options buttons that have replaced Start and Select were unobtrusively placed and felt satisfyingly clicky — appropriate for buttons you’ll use less frequently.

Finally, the new L2 and R2 triggers are exactly what you would hope for and expect. Featuring a slightly “hooked” design and less pressure resistance, these puppies are a perfect fit for your itchy trigger finger. I was also pleased to find that DualShock 4’s L1 and R1 buttons feel almost identical to those on PS3. Why fix what ain’t broken, right? It will be interesting to see if developers of PlayStation 4 shooters enable the player to swap the firing buttons between R2 and R1 like they often do on PS3, or if R2 becomes the universal standard going forward.

I didn’t get a chance to try out any titles that made use of DualShock 4’s new lightbar, touch pad, integrated speaker, or the mono earbud that enables online voice chat out of the box. But those will surely come in time. For now, I’m pleased to report that DualShock 4 is hands-down the best, most comfortable console controller I’ve used.

In this most recent Watch_Dogs gameplay demo, we witnessed the wide variety of tools that Aiden has in his arsenal, all expressed through gameplay.

Whether it be by driving in a stealthily way to try and evade assailants, by assisting a friend in escaping a sticky situation, or by blacking out parts of the city to give him tactical advantage, we were able to see all the agency we’ll have while exploring the great city of Chicago.

Now, we’ve seen how Aiden lends a helping hand to a friend, but who’s helping him? Who’s helping you, the player, when the odds seemed to have been tipped against you? That’s where it becomes interesting. There’s yet another layer of connectivity that will be available to you in Watch_Dogs: Co-op on mobile devices. When you’re calling for help, you are sending a request to friends who are connected to the Watch_Dogs universe through their mobile devices. When that request is accepted, a co-op experience starts and the goal for the two players is to survive from the police by escaping their pursuit. This is just another way Watch_Dogs brings you the full, hyper-connected experience.

We’ll have even more exciting news for you very soon, but for now, you can follow the latest Watch_Dogs updates on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

This is Chris from Ragtag Studio, a small indie game developer out of Chicago. We are giving life to a new game called Ray’s the Dead! Ray’s the Dead is an action adventure game where you are the leader of a zombie army. We are excited to announce that Ray’s the Dead will be available as a downloadable title on PlayStation 4!

Ray’s the Dead stars Raymond La Morte, a newly resurrected zombie on a quest to find out how he was killed, who killed him, and most curiously, why is there a strange light bulb sticking out of his head? In this ‘80s-inspired romp, you’ll get to experience the two unique stories of Ray intertwined by fate. As you terrorize American suburbia with your zombie army, you’ll also uncover playable memories from Ray’s life. You’ll be able to experience the events that led to his untimely demise first hand!

Sounds cool, but how does it play? A bolt of lightning activates the bulb lodged into Ray’s brain, giving him the power to convert and command the recently deceased into zombie minions! One by one you add to your numbers by pulling zombies out of their graves, or converting fallen foes. You can then use your new buddies to accomplish a variety of different goals, including overcoming obstacles, navigating the environment, and solving puzzles. If you’re a fan of Pikmin or Overlord, you will feel right at home.

The land of the living is a tough place to be if you’re a zombie. It’s full of angry people that just want to make you more dead. They’re armed and dangerous, so you’ll have to use your zombies to do what zombies do best: command them to jump out from the dark forest, crash through windows, and come streaming out of buildings to surprise and overwhelm the enemy. On your quest you’ll meet new types of zombies with the unique abilities you’ll need to accomplish your goals. For every human type you meet, there is a corresponding zombie waiting to be added to your army. You’ll have to use all of your brains to figure out which zombie is right for each challenge that Ray will face on his epic journey!

Ray’s the Dead has been a labor of love for the three of us at Ragtag, and we are thrilled out of our brains to be bringing it to PS4. With Sony’s focus on releasing games that deliver unique and refreshing experiences, PS4 became the natural choice for our game.

Summer is upon us and another E3 is here! Even with the unusually sunny skies here in Seattle the last couple months, we here at Zombie Studios have been hard at work on getting Blacklight: Retribution ready to be playable on the show floor at E3 2013.

When we announced Blacklight: Retribution on PS4 a couple months ago, we knew we had to be on the E3 show floor. We instantly set a goal to get the game running and be ready for E3. After a number of long weeks, lots of dinners in the office, and a new coffee machine, we are thrilled to have Blacklight: Retribution playable for everyone in attendance.

For those unfamiliar with Blacklight: Retribution, it’s an action-packed free-to-play first-person shooter that allows you to customize your character in millions of ways. You can change every aspect of your weapon from the barrel, scope, muzzle, and receiver. Want to make your character feel like your character? Alter them anyway you want, swapping out everything from individual pieces of armor to their accessories to cosmetic items that show your elite status.

Customizing your loadout also changes the gameplay and what items you have access to during a match. Perhaps you want to deploy a hardsuit – our huge mech with a chaingun and plasma rifle attached to its arms. Or, for those who want to give a bit of sass, how about a custom taunt? In Blacklight: Retribution we let you control how you want to look, play, and show off.

In the coming months we plan on giving you more updates on Blacklight: Retribution on PS4 and some of the new features and changes that are currently in the works.
Moments ago, we took to the stage at our exclusive pre-E3 Future of FINAL FANTASY event to confirm to press and fans alike the news you’ve all been eagerly waiting for – FINAL FANTASY XV is in development for PlayStation 4!

Moments ago, we took to the stage at our exclusive pre-E3 Future of FINAL FANTASY event to confirm to press and fans alike the news you’ve all been eagerly waiting for – FINAL FANTASY XV is in development for PlayStation 4!

Previously known as FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII, the game has been expanded to take full advantage of the PlayStation 4 capabilities, to bring you a FINAL FANTASY game that will surpass your expectations.

At the core of FINAL FANTASY XV we’re still retaining the main concept, world and story of our original vision. Armed forces of Niflheim launch a devastating assault upon the Kingdom of Lucis, casting Crown Prince Noctis and his comrades out of their homes and into the fray.

But the game has evolved to include improved action elements, gameplay and a completely new level of beautiful graphical quality, all thanks to the capabilities of the PlayStation 4.

But don’t take my word for it, have a look at the stunning trailer above and we guarantee your jaw will hit the floor!

Hi. I’m Greg, the designer of Sony’s new game Doki-Doki Universe and I run a small game studio called HumaNature Studios. In years past, I created a game you may be familiar with, called ToeJam and Earl. Announced just last month, Doki-Doki Universe is a game about humanity and emotional expression. It’s sweet and quirky and hopefully a little thought provoking. If you’re interested in a change of pace, you may find it interesting. We hope so, anyway. To give you a better idea for how the game plays, we’ve put together this fun trailer for you:

Doki-Doki Universe is more than a game. It’s a cross-platform ecosystem built around a unique universe of personal discovery. And as you can see in the trailer, the universe you explore is vibrant, fun and playful. There are tons of different places to explore, characters to meet, objects to collect and conjure up, and there are even fun reflective quizzes to take. However, the most important thing you should take away is that Doki-Doki Universe is about creating an emotionally engaging experience that will help you learn about yourself.

We hope you enjoyed this sneak peek into Doki-Doki Universe!

Hello there! It has been about a month since we announced that Hohokum will be available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita next year. At the time I mentioned that we would have some gameplay footage coming soon…and here it is! It features lots of new gameplay footage as well as a close look at some of the characters from the game. These bits were fun to make as they bring together lots of characters who never actually meet in the game. They seem to be getting on ok though, particularly Brollygirl and the oil-can guy. Gonna have to watch those two.

If you missed our previous announcement, Hohokum is a colorful, charming and whimsical game made by myself, Richard Hogg (I am an artist and illustrator) and Honeyslug, a London based game studio. It was an IGF and IndieCade finalist in 2011. Hohokum will be playable at E3 in a few different locations including the PlayStation booth and the marvelous IndieCade booth. Look forward to seeing a bit more about Hohokum coming out of the show!
