Starting today you might notice something different in the comments of the blog. We’ve created a plugin for WordPress that allows our blog authors to reply directly to a comment and have that reply appear next to the original comment. This should minimize many of the “@username” responses in our comments.

Currently, this feature is only available to the blog authors (you’re used to seeing their responses in red). We’ve debated opening up the option to everybody (and we may still), however, the question we always ask is, “Are we trying to replicate too many forum functions?” The other fear is that threaded comments would turn into this:

As for you WordPress geeks out there, we plan on releasing this plugin along with one other very soon. More on that in a bit.

UPDATED: The upgrade to the latest version of WordPress is complete. You’ll notice a few slight changes to the blog, one of which is the new “What’s Hot” sidebar item. We would have used “That’s Hot” but I think Paris has that trademarked. “What’s Hot” will provide links to posts or tags of content that are no longer featured on the homepage, but are still of interest. The tagging is also available, but we’re just starting to back-tag content, so give us some time on that.

Some of you have asked about setting your own password, don’t worry, we’ll be working on that next week.

…

Just wanted to give everybody a heads-up that the PlayStation.Blog will be ‘down’ for maintenance early Friday morning. We’ll be upgrading the WordPress install to the latest version (2.3.1). The transition should be relatively painless but if you see any wonkiness on the site first thing Friday bear with us.

There are a few things we’ll be rolling out with the update, the biggest of which is tagging. We’ll be using tags to supplement our existing category structure. Once the upgrade is complete we’ll start the fun task of back-tagging all the existing content.

Tags will make it easier for you to sort/find information on specific topics, just in case you really want to review everything we’ve ever posted about Warhawk :-)

Finally, a big thanks to Matt and the rest of the WordPress community for developing a great platform. As of this post the PlayStation.Blog has hosted 190+ posts and 33,000+ comments without a (major) hitch.

We’ve got some cool ideas for 2008 and will continue to improve the blog and add features as needed.

Hey gamers! Response to this here PlayStation.Blog has been so impressive, that SCEA decided that someone needed to be brought in to help keep an eye on it full time. I’m that person. Really, I’ve been lurking behind the scenes here for over a month, but it’s time to come out and say hello.

Among other things, it’s my job to help connect those who create software, hardware, and peripherals for PlayStation systems, and those of you who play them. And I can’t do it without you, the faithful and passionate readers.

So keep those comments coming – we’re reading them! Also, please feel free to utilize the Contact Us section (on the right side of the blog) if what you wanna say is off-topic. We read that too, even if we don’t necessarily have enough hours in the day to write back to each of you.

In the near future, we plan on coming to you more and more, finding out what you want to know and what you’d like to see here on PlayStation.Blog.

As a lifelong gamer, and a PlayStation fan since the days of (the original) Twisted Metal, Resident Evil and Crash Bandicoot games – I’m ecstatic to be here and to serve in this role. Keep me busy.

PS – shoot at me online: JeffPS

This is going to be a great and wild ride.

We’re reading everything (cough, korlithiel) and trying to respond to as much as we can (cough, whatthegeek), so bear with us. There’s much more to come….

It’s with enthusiasm, eagerness and, honestly, a little bit of relief that we lift the cover on our first official Sony Computer Entertainment America company blog – welcome and sorry for the wait.

PlayStation.Blog is a bit of work in progress, we see it as a place where we can share with you our company’s collective insights, opinions and perspectives on all things related to SCEA, PlayStation and the industry we play in.

At the moment, we’re thinking about sharing all sorts of things here, ranging from product news and title announcements to developer updates and industry opinion posts – all of which will come straight from the people here inside SCEA who are working, thinking and playing with this stuff every day. Look to the categories on the sidebar for some initial thoughts we have on future post themes.

Now, what we’ve learned, perhaps the hard way, is that a blog like this is really about you and the things you want to hear, share and discuss with us. With that in mind, you’ll notice that comments are enabled – and encouraged – so tell us what you want to see here and we’ll do our best to make it happen. And yes, like most blogs, we have a comment policy, please just keep this in mind when you’re leaving a comment.

We imagine it may take us a short while to find our pace with this, but bear with us as we get underway and we promise we’ll quickly make this blog a valuable stop in your daily info hunt for PlayStation news.

Like we’ve said, we’re excited to finally have a platform for conversation and connection. Much more is in the works too, so we hope you’ll consider sticking around, kicking the tires of our shiny new blog and sharing what you think.

Enjoy!
