Dive Into PS Vita’s Augmented Reality Suite

Rey Gutierrez's Avatar + Posted by Rey Gutierrez on Feb 08, 2012

At CES, we scored a backstage demo of Table Soccer, one of three augmented reality games that show off PS Vita’s Wide Area Augmented Reality capability.

Today, Sony Santa Monica Sr. Manager Dave Thach returns with two new augmented reality games, Fireworks and Cliff Diving. Both are part of the Augmented Reality Suite coming exclusively to PS Vita on Feb 22nd on PSN for free. Also, packaged with your PS Vita will be six AR cards which will also work with Reality Fighters, and other great AR experiences.

Fireworks transforms the world around you into a firework display where you’ll literally touch the apex of the firework for multipliers, combos and points. Cliff Diving introduces you to diver Dave, where you’ll have him diving off your coffee table into a virtual body of water.

Meet PlayStation’s President: Andy House

Jeff Rubenstein's Avatar + Posted by Jeff Rubenstein on Jan 18, 2012

At last week’s International CES, I had the opportunity to meet the top man at Sony Computer Entertainment, President and CEO Andrew House. House ascended to the role, replacing Kazuo Hirai, after working for Sony in Japan, Europe, and here at SCEA over the past two decades.

In this show floor discussion, I ask House about PlayStation Suite, his outlook on the Western launch of PS Vita, and what he plans to accomplish as CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.

If you’d like to hear how Andrew House got started in the industry and rose through the ranks, listen to his “origin story” on the Official PlayStation Blogcast Episode 007.

CES 2012: PS Vita’s Augmented Reality Transforms Your Table Into an Arena

Jeff Rubenstein's Avatar + Posted by Jeff Rubenstein on Jan 11, 2012

A couple of months ago, a video surfaced that showed off some cool-looking augmented reality apps running on PS Vita. Since then, it’s been confirmed that Vita will come with six AR Play Cards and a voucher to download a handful of free augmented reality mini games via the PSN. Today at CES, we were able to see one of these games in action: Table Football (it will be called Table Soccer in the US, because we already have football).

Backstage, Sony Santa Monica Sr. Manager Dave Thach dealt the AR Play Cards on a table, and a soccer pitch sprung to life through the window of the PS Vita’s luscious OLED display. The actual game is kind of like a turn-based soccer match – it reminded me of a 2012 version of paper football. But enough talk, let’s see it in action:

One of the things that I like about working for PlayStation is that immediately following the holiday break, we’re right back into the action with the International Consumer Electronics Show. While CES isn’t a huge gaming show, there is always a gaming component – PlayStation Vita is our focus on the show floor this year. And since many gamers are technophiles, many of us have more than a passing interest in the tech on display at this mega-conference. For instance, I first laid eyes on the XBR HX929 HDTV that’s currently hanging on my living room wall at last year’s CES…and now I lay eyes on it every night as it hangs on my living room wall.
