Like God of War
God of War fans, our journey to Ascension begins now! We just showcased the worldwide premiere of our single-player experience for God of War: Ascension on the grandest E3 stage of them all – the PlayStation E3 press conference. The story behind God of War: Ascension tells the journey of Kratos’ redemption from his past sins and the rise of his rage to break free from Ares bond. Our team is excited to explore the tormented past and psyche of Kratos and showcase his journey with a bevy of signature gameplay features, combat advancements, and epic “bigger than life” moments. We’ve been tucked away working hard here at Sony Santa Monica, and we are super excited to inform you that God of War: Ascension will be unleashing on PS3 on March 12, 2013.
We’ve got a long road ahead of us, but the whole team here at Sony Santa Monica Studios is dedicated to making this the biggest and best God of War yet. Be sure to follow our journey at www.godofwar.com. Now about that single-player demo…
Re-mastering both of the God of War PSP games in full HD for the PS3 God of War: Origins Collection definitely had its share of challenges for us. The first goal we had was simply the daunting task of up-rezing the engine and content authored on a PSP running at 480 x 272 resolution and 30 frames per second to 1920 x 1080p at a steady 60 fps on the PS3. This required a custom PS3 version of our engine, coded in-house exclusively for the Origins Collection, as well as a painstaking process by art team.
We are extremely pleased to bring our two God of War titles – God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta – to PS3 with the God of War: Origins Collection! The move to HD has allowed us to show off the visual fidelity that these games offer in a whole new way. Both titles went through an in-depth re-mastering process to make them shine like never before. One of the features we’re truly excited about is the addition of stereoscopic 3D. Both games look truly awesome with this functionality and the amount of depth in the scenes, the layering and parallax of the backdrops, and the dynamic camera motion throughout really pays off when experienced in all of its 3D splendor. To give you a taste of what this compilation is offering, here’s a look at our first trailer…
This collection will also support DualShock controllers so every impact and every bone-crushing moment can now be felt in your hands.
“The first time we saw him we thought, ‘Oh my God, what a great Mortal Kombat character he would make.’”
Ed Boon is very excited. The Mortal Kombat creative director and co-creator can finally spill his guts regarding one of the most anticipated video-game crossovers of all time: Kratos’ exclusive guest appearance in the PS3 version of Mortal Kombat. “We kind of felt it was meant to happen,” he says. “We think we’ve done Kratos justice.”
Ed Boon and God of War III director Stig Asmussen don’t remember who made the first phone call, but both recall the Kratos crossover talks starting early in Mortal Kombat’s development cycle. “I remember somebody saying, ‘‘hey, there might be this possibility of Kratos appearing in Mortal Kombat,’” Stig remembers. “I said, ‘ You gotta be kidding me, we gotta make this happen! Let’s get on the phone.’”
Hey everyone! I just wanted to give a shout out to Ed Boon and Netherrealm Studios for getting close to wrapping up Mortal Kombat! From what I have seen and played, I think everyone is going to be really happy once they get their hands on it.
I remember interviewing at PlayStation eight years ago and seeing Kratos in the very early stages of God of War 1 and thinking, “This guy looks like he was pulled straight from MK!” Which to me, was a good thing. One of the things that I always felt separated Mortal Kombat from other fighters was its character design. When you combine this with Kratos’ attitude and tendency for violence, it’s a match made in heaven!
When developing God of War III, a ton of effort went into bringing the dark and twisted world of ancient Greek mythology onto the PS3; something that couldn’t have been done without the talent and hard work of the amazing art team here at Santa Monica Studio who spent hours dreaming of new creatures for […]
With the recent release of God of War: Ghost of Sparta, players now have the opportunity to explore Atlantis on the PSP. But this isn’t the first time Atlantis was going to be featured in a God of War game. Back in 2005, Senior Level Designer Jonathan Hawkins was given his first assignment on God […]
