It’s been a lengthy 11 years since Eve released the album Eve-Olution. She’s kept her toes in the entertainment water, primarily through acting in both TV & film, including roles in Barbershop, Whip It!, Single Ladies and Glee. While she’s made appearances on tracks like Gwen Stefani’s “Rich Girl”, the music industry is a much different place for an artist that has been gone a while. A multitude of label issues led Eve to release this album independently, exploring the new landscape and digging her heels in the territory she helped create. New emcees like Nicki Minaj should be thankful for someone like Even who paved the way and be ready for some competition.

Trace Adkins is one of country music’s most recognizable stalwarts, churning out a new album every two years (or so) for the last 15 years or so). His public persona is almost as big as his music, with a series of controversies throughout his careers, lightened by a candid look at the singer during his time on NBC’s All-Star Celebrity Apprentice, whose finale this weekend could award Adkins with over 700K to the American Cancer Society. The album features an appearance by Colbie Caillat and an open ended interpretation (hence the ellipses) of Love Will . . .

Pistol Annies – Annie Up

Super groups are pretty commonplace and always a treat, but not very often in country and certainly not with a group of ladies. However, Pistol Annies pushed that boundary two years ago with the release of Hell on Heels in 2011. The group is anchored by platinum superstar Miranda Lambert, which initially made the group a “side project.” However, the success of bandmate Ashley Monroe’s March release Like a Rose has upgraded them to super-group status, rounded out by friend Angaleena Presley. Lambert’s well known tenacity is projected three-fold through these tough, sassy ladies, singing about men, family and drinking in a fun romp provided by some exceptional musicians.

She & Him – Vol. 3

It’s been three years since the last original studio album by She & Him, a duo consisting of indie stalwart M. Ward and actress/singer Zooey Deschanel. While the two released a Christmas album in 2011, this is the first piece of work to encompass a whirlwind few years for Deschanel, whose popularity skyrocketed with her starring role in The New Girl. She has a tendency to interject her sultry vocals into parts of her acting work (see: 500 Days of Summer) and reigns supreme as adorkable indie queen. However, if there was ever any teetering between which Zooey to love, the duo’s strongest effort to date may inspire you to be most connected to Zooey the songstress.

Today, we’re featuring an exclusive artist interview with Modestep guitarist and co-founder, Tony Friend. See what the rising electronic band have to say about their favorite video games and what games they can’t wait to play on tour.

SEN: How much of a gamer are you, on a scale of 1 to 5? (5 being a fanatic who follows every bit of news)

Tony Friend: I would say that I’m probably at a 3-4 at the moment, although if you asked me a few years ago I would have definitely said 5 but it’s hard to stay completely on top of everything while we are constantly touring and writing.

SEN: What’s the best game (on a PlayStation platform) you’ve played in the last year, and why?

Tony Friend: That’s a tough question, if I had to pick one game it would have to be Zombies on Call of Duty Black Ops 2. I’m not actually a big fan of the normal game, but I am completely obsessed with the Zombies mini game that comes with it. When I am at home, me and my housemates play the 4 player local games and try to get as far as we can on the Tranzit Mode. I love how every time you play, you have a slightly different experience and you have free reign to either attack, defend, create weapons or just see how long you can survive for.

SEN: On tours, do you play games regularly on the road with your touring team? If so, which ones?

Tony Friend: On tour the most played game by us and the crew is FIFA without any doubt. Pretty much every single night on tour ends up with a FIFA tournament. The great thing about FIFA is you can actually play 2 on 2 so we usually get into teams and see how well we can do. Also the banter is always the best when playing FIFA, our tour manager Steve is always bringing the smack talk.

SEN: What upcoming not-yet-released game has caught your eye, and why?

Tony Friend: Obviously, I’m looking forward to GTA5 which probably won’t come as a surprise as everyone else is as well! The new Battlefield looks pretty cool too. The last 3 were awesome and I lost months of my life to them when they first came out! I heard that it’s going to be the most realistic gaming experience ever, so I am definitely going to grab that when it comes out.

SEN: Have you ever flirted with the idea of working on a video game? If so, do you have an elevator pitch for a game you’d love to see somebody (or yourself) create?

Tony Friend: If I was going to work on a game it would be have to be a Zombie style game as they are the games I seem to get most obsessed with. All my favorite games have some kind of Zombie missions such as Dead Island, The Zombie expansion on Red Dead Redemption and Zombies on Call of Duty. Maybe If I could create a game that mixes Zombies with music somehow, then that pretty much covers my 2 favorite things!

SEN: What are your thoughts on PS4 so far?

Tony Friend: Well, obviously I am incredibly excited for it, I will be one of the crazy people camped out in front of the game stores at midnight to make sure I am one of the first to own it!

Snoop Lion – Reincarnated
The much-anticipated reggae “re-branding” of the artist formerly known as Snoop Dogg is here. He announced his new name after a spiritually enlightening trip to Jamaica, exploring his past during a particularly violent era of Hip-hop to a future of peace encouraged by the Rastafarian movement. Much of this was documented in the film Reincarnated, now available on the Video Unlimited service, which gives an even deeper look at the circumstances in which the lyrical content of the album was written. Reincarnated features guest appearances like Drake, Miley Cyrus and Akon and was produced by Diplo and the Major Lazer crew. Michael Buble – To Be Loved
Coming off a whirlwind weekend hosting The 2013 JUNO Awards, Canada’s favorite son has dropped his first original studio album since 2009’s Crazy Love. However, his name has continued to be everywhere, especially after the monstrous release of his 2011 seasonal album, Christmas, which managed to also top the charts the next holiday season. His classic Sinatra-style crooning has won over fans of all ages, from his modern renditions of “You Make Me Feel So Young,” “To Love Somebody” and original tracks like “It’s a Beautiful Day.” The tone of the album is incredibly cheery and light, highlighting his vocal chops outside of a classical setting. A perfect start to summer.

Phoenix – Bankrupt!
It has certainly been an interesting ride for Phoenix thus far. The seemingly “new” band that erupted on the scene with singles like “Liztomania” and “1901,” had actually been plugging away since the late 90’s, with pockets of devoted fans across the globe. Now, all of a sudden, their 5th studio album seems like a sophomore effort, as they once again have something to prove to a new wave of folks who jumped on board late. An incredibly strong first single, “Entertainment,” coupled with lots of Coachella buzz has put them top of mind, at least in the indie world. The consistency of their sound should please fans and draw in new ones but it is still to be seen if the takeover of a mainstream audience will strike once again.

Kid Cudi – Indicud

Surprise! In an abrupt move last week, Kid Cudi announced that his new album, originally slated for 4/23, would be released one week early. The overwhelming demand from fans and quick skyrocket of the single “Girls,” led to the decision, putting him up against artists like Tyga and Tyler, the Creator, who also recently release albums. Cudi has a unique advantage though, in bringing in a large contingent of other fans through his previous “rock” endeavors like WZRD, although he no longer has the Kanye West machine behind him, as he left G.O.O.D. Music earlier this year. This album also features indie artists like Father John Misty, HAIM and even Michael Bolton (really) alongside hip-hop mainstays like Kendrick Lamar, Too Short and RZA.

Fall Out Boy – Save Rock And Roll

Don’t call it a comeback – Fall Out Boy never really left. While a formal “hiatus,” was announced over four years ago, the band always had plans to continue playing together after getting positively burned out from years of recording and touring on worldwide levels. They each took on other endeavors, either professionally and personally, most notably Patrick Stump’s heavily electronic album Soul Punk. While their trademark pop-punk and fast guitars reign supreme, some of that electronic influence seems to have rubbed off, as well as a highly-produced, fuller sound. They also use more guest appearances than the average rock band, imploring Courtney Love, Big Sean and yes, even Elton John. This kicks off a busy summer for the band, who will play sold out smaller venues across the US, then on to Europe before embarking on a major arena tour in September.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Mosquito

Karen O. and her band of indie rock royalty return, three years after their last album It’s Blitz! and nine years since their breakout hit, Fever to Tell, featuring everyone’s wedding dance song, “Maps.” Well-known for Karen’s veracious live performances, they have had some massive singles that gained mainstream notoriety. At just 18, Tyga burst on the scene as the latest Young Money prodigy. After moving from Decaydance Records to fully Young Money, his previous dance music roots made a progression to more straightforward rap. Tyler, The Creator – Wolf

Tyler, The Creator has never been one for a quiet entrance, but the Odd Future ringleader seems to be doing so with Wolf. Sure, a few of his usual antics have been done for show (like asking reviewers not to talk about the album for a week until fans could make their own judgments. Whoops.) but the twist and turns of a relatively young man’s fame have re-focused the rapper on his primary goal – making the music that got him there in the first place. The album was solely produced by him and, unlike Goblin, he puts his energy into the beats and the overall aesthetic of these songs as a whole rather than the bursts of controversy that may have isolated fans from a very talented artist. Killswitch Engage – Disarm The Descent

Longtime fans of Killswitch Engage are getting a bittersweet taste with this new album, which features former vocalist Jesse Leech, who rejoined the band 10 years after his final album when Howard Jones left the band in 2012. A band that has grown together over time moving forward with the creative force of the past, which brings an interesting perspective into every track. The Band Perry – Pioneer

In a crowded space of country groups, the synergy of the Perry siblings (Kimberly, Neil and Reid) has set them apart from the rest. They are in no way pioneering this group anymore, as their massive hit, “If I Die Young,” was followed by two other top charting singles before the band went back in to record this sophomore effort. The first two singles shot off immediately, with “Better Dig Two,” souring to #1 on the radio charts. The band wrote nine of the 12 tracks on the album, with legendary producer Rick Rubin at the helm for production and creative direction. Lil Wayne – I Am Not A Human Being II

Lil Wayne returns a little less than two years after the release of The Carter IV, arguably one of Weezy’s most commercially successful albums (by way of hit singles like “How to Love,” and “Mirrors”). As is core to many of his “themed” multi-albums, this one serves as the follow up to 2010’s I Am Not a Human Being, but also features unused material from The Carter III and The Carter IV. With a little more time to concentrate, as opposed to the pre-jail-time production of the last album, Wayne takes his usually rough-around-the-edges lyrical content and turns it up a notch . . . we’ll let you use your imagination on that one.

Blake Shelton – Based on a True Story…

After whetting the appetites of his fans with a Christmas album last year, (even featuring his Mom on one of the tracks) Blake Shelton brings and album full of new material. Just in time for the season premiere of The Voice, where he serves as a celebrity mentor. Before he became a household name on the wildly popular show, he was well-known in the country world with seven other albums under his belt. His bi-coastal life hasn’t jaded the country boy, as he picked songs proudly declaring the big country truths: beer, denim, dusty roads and family. So much family, in fact, that he features his wife Miranda Lambert’s girl-group Pistol Annies on the first track, “Boys ‘Round Here.”

OneRepublic – Native

While OneRepublic certainly hasn’t been the loudest of bands in their genre, they’ve managed to keep a consistent presence the last six years since the release ofDreaming Out Loud (featuring “Apologize”). Giants like “Stop and Stare,” “Secrets,” and “Good Life,” quietly rumbled to major success through tv/film licensing and radio play. The lead single from Native, “Feel Again,” has also gained traction as the band toured and singer Ryan Tedder continued to be a highly in-demand, GRAMMY winning songwriter and producer (at the helm for Adele, Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce, among others). The band will be spending April overseas, wrapping up in Ireland on April 29th.

Sound City – Real to Reel

Last month, Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl solidified himself as the ambassador of cool, making his directorial debut on the film Sound City. Grohl commissioned his famous friends to speak to the infamous sound studio in Los Angeles, where iconic albums like Nevermind & Rumours were recorded. The first part of the film goes through the history, while the rest features a star-studded line-up including Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor, Rick Springfield and more collaborating on brand new material for this album. In the film, you get to watch as Grohl geeks out while working with Paul McCartney and now you get to hear it, too.

David Bowie – The Next Day

While Bowie became a household name in the 70’s and has recorded 20+ albums since, there has been an entire decade between this latest effort and his last, Reality, in 2003. A wave of buzz rushed over the internet after the album, recorded mostly in secrecy over a lengthy two years, was announced. Once parts were recorded, he would carefully consider each (one time an entire four months) before bringing the band back to continue. He led with the release of the single, “Where Are We Now,” an appropriate rhetoric to the answer of “right here, right now,” while Bowie reclaims his throne with other musical legends.

Jimi Hendrix – People, Hell & Angels
After his death in 1970, Jimi Hendrix has been experienced almost as much as or more than during his lifetime thanks to an invested interest in gathering the recordings he was actively working on. While many of the posthumous releases include re-mastered or live versions of album tracks, People, Hell & Angels features 12 un-released tracks intended to be the follow up to Electric Ladyland. While we may never know exactly what his plans were, the tone of the album and the structure of the songs give insight to the creative direction Hendrix was headed and gives us an opportunity to celebrate his talent even 43 years after his death.
