I recently spent some hands-on time with a near-complete version of Street Fighter X Tekken for PS Vita, ahead of its October 23rd PSN and retail launch. And I’ve gotta say, it’s the spitting image of its PS3 bigger brother with big, bold characters and detailed backgrounds running at PS Vita’s native screen resolution. But peer underneath those pretty graphics and you’ll find a wealth of new extras that make this the definitive version of Capcom’s crossover fighter.

The game comes equipped with every DLC fighter from the PS3 version — including PlayStation exclusives Cole McGrath, Kuro, Toro, Mega Man and Pac-Man, of course — as well as alternate costumes for every character in the base roster. Another nice touch is the ability to customize your character’s costume color, then share it with friends via PS Vita’s integrated geo-social app “near.” It’s also worth noting that any DLC costumes or Gems you purchased for the PS3 version will port over to the PS Vita version at no extra cost.

PS Vita’s front touchscreen is leveraged in several ways, most notably to create virtual buttons on the screen that you can reposition, resize, and assign to multi-button inputs — useful if you have a tough time pressing several buttons at once for some of the more elaborate moves.

A new “KO Monument” feature collects mementos of combatants you’ve defeated, while a new “Burst Kumite” single-player mode puts you against an endless battle of CPU opponents, including ghosts taken from multiplayer matches — handy if you’re not near a WiFi or 3G connection. The Gallery mode offers up the expected cinematics and soundtrack listening options, but also introduces an augmented reality feature that enables you to drop SF X Tekken characters into photos you take using your PS Vita.

Of course, you’ll be able to beat down PS3 and PS Vita combatants alike over WiFi thanks to the game’s full support for Cross Play. And if you happen to own SF x Tekken for your PS3, you can also tap into Cross Controller support and control the PS3 version using your PS Vita — handy, if you’re tapping into those multi-button touchscreen shortcuts, or if you just want to look extra cool.

There are a range of small tweaks to the various arena designs — some daytime stages are now set at night, and vice-versa. And if you squint hard enough, you’ll spot some new visual Easter Eggs, such as a cameo from Tekken’s affable velociraptor Alex in the Jurassic Era Research Facility.

Back on August 30, 1987, Capcom released Street Fighter in arcades, which seemed relatively innocuous until you gave it a second look. The graphics were average for the time, the voice acting was quite muffled, and the controls were strict and unforgiving. You could normally only choose a single character – a redheaded, red-shoed martial artist named Ryu – unless a second player came on, in which case they could play a blonde clone named Ken. Most people who play it would agree that it’s not the best game in the series, but there were people who saw its potential, and decided to continue the franchise with Street Fighter II. With that, one of the video games’ biggest icons stepped into the spotlight.

Over the past 25 years, Street Fighter has worked itself up from humble beginnings in the arcade to being a cultural phenomenon throughout the world. Millions of people interact with it every day, in a myriad of ways. In all truth, the fans define the franchise as much as the games. And it was these people who inspired the creation of the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set.

This set represents the combined passion and enthusiasm of literally hundreds of people who have contributed to making Street Fighter games over the last 25 years, and serves as a love letter to anyone who cares about the franchise. When we first met to discuss the set’s creation, the two questions we asked were “What is the maximum amount of stuff we can get into this box?” and “How do we create something that celebrates all the different kinds of fans we have out there?” These questions helped lead us to one of the most intensive, thoughtful, and fan-oriented collector’s sets in Capcom history.

So, let’s look at our different sources of inspiration. What is Street Fighter? Well, the easiest place to start is with the games. Obviously, without the Street Fighter games, there would not be anything else. We included all the titles currently available for PlayStation 3, representing many of the series’ highlights. Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition and Street Fighter x Tekken are included as physical discs. We’re also including all of the costume DLC for SSFIVAE (that’s over 100 costumes!) and for SFxT, the 12 additional character DLC and all available Swap costumes. You can also download two of our digital titles, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition. With all of that, you’ll have something to play for whatever mood you’re in.

When you get your Collector’s Set for PS3, you are in for a special treat. Sony, being a big supporter of fighting game fans and Street Fighter fans in particular, actually came to us at Capcom and told us that they want to help celebrate the 25th Anniversary by offering additional content for PlayStation 3. As such, the PS3 set includes Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2, and Street Fighter Alpha 3 as PSone Classic titles; Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max as a PSP download, all downloadable content for Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition, and lots of avatars (over 170). We are proud to be working with Sony to get this to you.

We knew from fan feedback that people also enjoy Street Fighter beyond just playing the games. One of the most pervasive ways that fans interact with the franchise away from consoles and arcades is through the artwork. The games are filled with great art, and this inspires a wide variety of artists from all over the world. We wanted to capture a piece of that, and bring recognition to some of the incredible pieces that have been created, so we put a call out to artists around the world to participate. We got hundreds of entries, but were eventually able to narrow it down to a select sample to be included in a 64-page hardcover art book.

I myself am a music lover, and Street Fighter’s music is recognizable to gamers and non-gamers alike. Whether it’s the iconic Street Fighter 2 main theme or the Guile theme (it really does go with everything!), Street Fighter has proven that throwing a punch is much better with music. So, we wanted to include something for audiophiles by providing 11 discs of music. This includes nine discs of soundtracks – covering Street Fighter, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, and Street Fighter x Tekken – and two discs of fan-created music. As with the artwork, we asked people to send in their music. The talent in the response humbled us, and made it incredibly difficult to make our selections from the 300+ entries. However, we managed to create two CDs: one with remixes/remakes of existing themes, and one which is original music inspired by Street Fighter. Some of these fans have serious futures ahead of them, and it’s an honor to be able to include them in the Collector’s Set and make them a piece of the franchise’s history.

Then, of course, you have the collectors… the people who like to showcase items on their shelves. Here again, we have this group covered. Inside the large black box (which itself is a collectible), you’ll find an eight-inch statue of Ryu flying up with a Shoryuken. Not only is it a highly-detailed statue (the texture on his gi is some of the best I’ve seen on a figure that size), but the flames in the base even light up to show off at night. Then we have the life-size, embroidered Ryu replica belt, complete with the furinkazan kanji.

Continuing on, we have a two-disc Blu-Ray set, with over 12 hours of content. This features a lot of animated content, including the entirety of the incredibly cheesy (but-oh-so-fun) Saturday morning cartoon show from 1995, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (in my opinion, featuring some of the best fight scenes choreographed for any film, live-action or animated), Street Fighter IV: The Ties That Bind, and the Super Street Fighter IV Original Video Animation, aka the “Juri anime,” which is being released in English for the first time ever. However, the most exciting piece of video content is “I am Street Fighter,” a brand new documentary we commissioned. As you may have been able to tell through this post, Street Fighter has impacted many people’s lives, and vice-versa. That’s what this documentary looks at – the people who have influenced the Street Fighter franchise, and the people whose lives have been influenced by it. It’s a fascinating, and occasionally heartwarming look into the cultural phenomenon.

As you can see, we kept every type of fan in mind when creating the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collector’s Set and we’re incredibly proud to bring it to fans. In fact, there has never been a better time to be a Street Fighter fan. Whether you were there from the beginning, or just began in the past couple of years, you are part of a rich legacy and vibrant community. You can see both of these in action at our anniversary website.

You make Street Fighter what it is. You are Street Fighter. So from all of us at Capcom – thank you!

…Also, SHORYUKEN!!!

Last week I was in Rome with some friends from Capcom to attend their Captivate event, an annual showcase of what’s in the pipeline for such game series as Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Lost Planet. While I could spend a couple of hundred words on fountains and pizza, there is a lot of game news to cover; here’s a handy digest of all the best bits.

The game features three playable characters – Leon S. Kennedy, Chris Redfield and Jake Muller – with three unique, intertwining stories that the player can choose to play through in any order. While the action takes place in various locations around the world, we do know that a large portion is set in China. If you’re wondering who Jake Muller is, he is a new character, a mercenary in Eastern Europe, and the son of maniacal sunglasses advocate, Albert Wesker. We saw a playthrough of some of Leon’s story, set in Tall Oaks University after a bio-terrorist attack that turns the American President into a zombie, forcing Leon to kill him and subsequently face the blame for his murder (that might sound like a spoiler for the whole plot but this all happened in the first four minutes).

Resident Evil 6 is coming sooner than you think

We got to see an hour-long presentation on Resident Evil 6 that oozed with new information, including the announcement that the game’s release date has been brought forward to October 2nd, 2012.

Little things we noticed include the return of proper zombies. These aren’t brainwashed villagers – their skin is falling off, they love hiding behind corners and they make noises like neglected drains. We also noticed that the interface has been streamlined to make things like changing weapons and consuming green herbs easier on the fly. There are also more shooting controls, such as the ability to fire while laying on your back, and some fun contextual attacks. We also learned that Resident Evil 6 features drop-in and drop-out co-op throughout, both locally in split-screen and online.

Street Fighter X Tekken on PS Vita features 12 new characters and PS3 Cross Play

The fighting game equivalent of beans and hot dog sausages in the same tin is already making my teenage dreams come true on PS3 and is set for PS Vita later this year. More than a straight port, it includes 12 new characters that you will also be able to use in the PS3 version if you own copies on both formats. Those extra characters are (in their respective story pairs): Dudley and Elena; Christie and Lei; Sakura and Blanka; Lars and Alisa; Brian Fury and Jack X; Guy and Cody.

The portable version also supports Cross Play allowing you to crossover cancel against PS3 players, along with other PS Vita specific features, such as creating your own, customisable shortcuts using front and rear touch. The development team told us that there are more additions to come and, while we couldn’t get them to spill everything, they did suggest that they are looking into Augmented Reality and Near functions.

We’ll have a full interview with the game’s producer later in the week so here’s a preview where he reveals which of the new characters has the most unique play style:

“Lei Wulong from the Tekken side of the cast has some very interesting play styles. He fights in the ‘Drunken Fist’ style which has a few different stances, not dissimilar to Gen from Street Fighter 4. Players who are familiar with fighting games are going to find these stances – and the different move sets associated with them – very interesting.”

Lost Planet 3 Coming to PS3 in 2013

Lost planet 3 was announced with a trailer pointing to an ‘early 2013’ release date. Series creator Kenji Oguro told us that the third in the series is “the closest to our original vision of survival, exploration and discovery” and puts the player in control Jim, one of the early colonists on the planet E.D.N. III.

Set before the original Lost Planet, the game features such series hallmarks as a hostile, frozen world; giant alien enemies; and mech machinery – these are called ‘Utility Rigs’ this time around and, while they designed to aid construction, you’ll find yourself using their mechanical claw and drill to dispatch larger enemies in gruesome fashion.

DmC trailer includes new weapons and convenient pizza

When Ninja Theory Creative Director Tameem Antoniades told us that his team’s intention with DmC is to “Strip Dante down to his essence and build him back up as a character,” we didn’t realise quite how literal he was being until we saw this trailer:

We also got to play the game and can confirm that the combat will be reassuringly familiar to Devil May Cry fans. The additions the team have made are carefully thought out and include an easier to understand ranking system and two new weapons. Cyrus and the Arbiter – angel scythe and demon axe respectively – can be equipped on the fly using the L2 and R2 buttons and add an extra layer of strategy to the well-known sword and gun play.

So there you have it. We saw an awful lot more from the world of Capcom at Captivate 2012; if you have any questions about these games then please ask in the comments and I’ll answer if I can.

Though original developer Sucker Punch has stepped aside, our visit with Thieves in Time’s developer Sanzaru Games indicates that the fourth game in the series is in good and capable hands.

Elsewhere in the issue, the battle rages on in our Medal of Honor: Warfighter feature as we get our first look at EA’s second offensive front against rival Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. Warfighter’s focus on Tier One operatives and cinematic action sequences indicate it’s got its sights squarely set on the rumored but as-yet-unconfirmed Black Ops 2. We can’t wait to see the pyrotechnics when these two powerhouses meet on the field of battle.

But the announcement that’s got PTOM worked up this month is Assassin’s Creed III. With a new hero, renewed focus, and enthralling Revolutionary War setting, Ubisoft’s killer new title rebuts the notion that annual installments have diluted this franchises’s impact. We’ve also got big previews hits on crime thrillers Max Payne 3 and the resurrected Sleeping Dogs (previously known as True Crime: Hong Kong).

There’s no shortage of big reviews this month, either, with Mass Effect 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and Silent Hill: Downpour leading the way. PS Vita games also continue to leave their mark with third-person shooter Unit 13, the venerable Plants vs. Zombies, and the quirky Escape Plan. Factor in a slew of hot PSN titles and we’ve definitely got more games than time this issue.

PTOM’s May issue arrives at newsstands today, Tuesday, April 10th. Grab it before it’s gone!

Last week on The Tester 3, we saw the gamers endure a rigorous challenge inspired by UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss. Their ability to overcome a demanding obstacle course and quickly adapt was tested. Nolan North also came by the PlayStation Loft to show off his new PS Vita title, and an unexpected double elimination caught everybody by surprise.
