As you may have noticed, the ModNation delivery trucks are still unloading at our docks with lots of new DLC. What better way to show off these “new toys” than to let you turn them into some never-before-seen (or imagined) tracks. For the next few weeks, Top Tracks will feature five tracks nominated by the community of some of what they have discovered in our DLC Showcase event.

Progressive ModNation Racers Gran Prix Results

In early March we announced a contest to create the best ModNation Racers track using a free parts pack sponsored by Progressive Insurance. This parts pack followed on the heels of the free Flo mod and Progressive vehicle downloads.

Well, the entries are all in, and our judges have been playing the top levels…as chosen by the community… to determine our finalists. They’ve made a final decision based upon originality, quality/polish, brand awareness and creative use of the items. Our official Progressive ModNation Racers Gran Prix winners are:

“There were several tracks which used the Progressive items in clever ways, but most of them weren’t fun from a racing perspective,” said Mark Androvich, Manager of PlayStation Network Advertising and one of our judges. “And, on the other side, there were several tracks which were fun to drive, but made little use of the Progressive items. Mega Plex was a great mix of both—representing the best features of ModNation Racers as well as positively representing the Progressive brand.”

If you haven’t checked out these tracks for yourself, sign into ModNation Racers and search for the track name or author. We think you’ll be just as impressed as we were.

In light of the recent bevy of new MNR DLC we brought in an expert in time management to offer you some help. Here are a few of their suggestions to get your DLC on.

The “Moddys” Celebrate The ModNation Kart Creating Community

We recently announced the kick-off to our MNR One Year Anniversary Celebration! Over the next few weeks we will recognize you, the ModNation for all the effort, creativity and pure skill you have poured into this game over the past year. We will spotlight some of the games achievements as well as its unique insanity personality This is week three of our anniversary celebration which brings us to the Mod creators of MNR. Many of the Mods floating around in the ModNation ubersphere are pure genius. Some are weird, some are a little strange, and to be honest some of them just flat out frighten us in soooooo many ways we just can’t begin to tell you. As most of you heard at the Sony Press Conference kicking off E3, we are proudly bringing the ModNation franchise to the much anticipated PlayStation Vita. It was a great opportunity to share with you all some of the things our team has in store. For starters, the ModNation Racers PS3 Community has created in just over a year’s time over 2 million Mods, Karts and Tracks. All of which will be available to anyone who purchases ModNation Racers (Working Title) for PS Vita on day one. That means by using the online capabilities and processing power of the PS Vita, the ModNation team has made it possible for users to download any PS3 user generated creation and bring it with them on the go.

The team has also made huge strides in creating a ground up effort to make a ModNation title that takes full advantage of the PlayStation Vita features. As mentioned in the Press Conference, this title is not a port of the PSP or PS3. On the creation side, we showed that in a matter of seconds how fast and easy it is to create a track by drawing it with your finger. The front touch capability of the PS Vita has kicked the door wide open for more intuitive ways to edit your track and place props to your personal liking. But without a doubt, the single most element that received the most “Oooos and Aaaahs,” was the power of the back touch.

Play puppet master in your very own ModNation universe and raise mountains by simply touching the back panel. The longer you hold your fingertips to the back panel, the higher the peaks rise. On the front panel, if you feel inclined to create a lake, simply press down until you strike water. We also demonstrated that the integrity of ModNation kart racing is still intact with the advantage of Dual Analog Sticks. With steering on the left stick, and performing stunts on the right, racing could not be more fun.

As you will watch in this never before seen video, creation is certainly at your fingertips. It is a great time for technology and the PlayStation Vita has given us a wealth of tools to work with. We are excited to say that this is only the tip of the iceberg. There is plenty more that will be revealed in the months to come so keep your eyes peeled.

Lurdan Field Dual Stadium by IndustrialSavior

Mark: “The sound you are hearing right now is that of my mind being blown. I mean, come on… a track that allows me to drive the bases in a baseball game and has me being “kicked” through football goalposts, too much! TOO MUCH!!!

But this track is not a gimmick either. The multiple races I was in on this track were fun and very competitive. IndustrialSavior, you “knocked it out of the park”! Great job!

Who are your favorite creators and creations? (Tracks, Mods, Karts)
My favorite creators are laidbackcat, athiestsw, Bongsoldier and its2l84that. I find their tracks interesting to look at but at the same time very fun to race. Bongsoldier – “Another World” had me scratching my head for ages trying to figure out how he created that track!! There are many, many more great creators out there, many of whom don’t get the recognition they deserve.

My favorite track I have created is “Battle of Port Duisburg.” I spent many hours on the design and layout making sure the two separate paths were near enough the same distance. I’m also …

“Track of the Week”

Enchanted Valley by spinviper83

spinviper83 says: “The track design is inspired by an enchanted theme. Comes with a castle, fountains, waterfalls, shady woods with branching paths, and plenty of valleys and jumps.”

Mark smiles: spinviper83 taught me something new about the “ins and outs” of track creating. As listed above this track contains pretty much “all the bells and whistles”, “the kitchen sink” as well as “the whole enchilada” and yet spinviper83 uses these elements wisely, creatively, and playfully in designing a track that is both beautiful and enjoyable from beginning to end. The transitions for each track section (story) make sense and I looked forward to each of them with every proceeding lap.

I learned that when creating with passion and forethought you CAN create a wonderful track with many, many varied elements and items. Enchanted Valley is not overly complex and that is part of its appeal. You would have a hard time convincing many in the ModNation community that this was not a “pack in” track. Thank you spinviper83, I really enjoyed the ride (after ride, after ride…).

Mark: I heard prob_alex was working on something special and when I saw his post online for this track I scrambled to my PS3 for some potential “drool-time”. Seconds off the start I said to myself, “YEP! This is going to be something special, let’s see just what he did”. When the first special moment arrived I LITERALLY leapt from my chair, and found myself babbling (in my padded “office”) OMG! OMG! OMG! Needless to say, after settling down from my weekly MNR “fit” my co-workers now seem more worried about my sanity than they were only days before. Oh well. They were going to find out sooner or later.

You’ll just have to play prob_alex’s moddotcom track to see what blew all of us away. Get ready to hit the pause button on your controller and get your MNR in-game camera ready!

Final comment: “prob_alex, most people don’t even possess the talent to draw (or trace for that matter) a picture of Tag yet you somehow nailed it using MNR props, UNBELEIVABLE!”

Spotlight Track of the Week

Hawaiian Odyssey by atheistsw

atheistsw says: So I decided to make a track with my least-used theme, Jungle. I’ve used the trees and stuff loads but the actual base very little, so I was interested in seeing how I could use this theme to cover the major sections of the Hawaiian Islands, namely beach, jungle, mountains, volcano’s and cities. Well, I’m happy to say that the experiment worked and the result is a lush, varied trek around a beautiful approximation of this dramatic and stunning land.

Mark says: atheistsw, seriously!?, This track is the “happy place” I go to every once in a while on a rough day. How did you extract this from my brain? I have tried over and over to create a track with my favorite elements in it and you just listed them word for word. My dream realized!

I suggest people make it a top priority to play this track many times if you want to learn about track creation and design; varied and unique shortcuts, elements such as trees and brush as living aspects of the track, beautiful visuals and elevation changes. All of this is done in droves but with never sacrificing ANY bit of quality. atheistsw shows us how build a dense rich feature packed track without ever “jumping the shark” with frills and gimmicks.

This track makes it into my personal “MNR Hall of Fame” which just opened for business today… in Hawaii!

Q: What inspires you?
I tend to get inspired by real life locations, things I see on TV/films and photographs. A lot of my tracks tend to be real-world in style which means I’m always trying to add little details to help make things look more realistic.

That sounds like a prelude to a throw-down but it’s not. I’m having a MNR identity crisis. I am sooooo busy playing MNR lately that I haven’t had the time to create a “me” mod (giggle). Would you do it for me?

I will post your creations over time on our Facebook page and ultimately choose the perfect “me” (giggle). This way you’ll know what I “look” like and who knows, maybe you’ll find me in the ModSpot for a race. Hmmmm… sounds like some sort of challenge! Submit your “me” (chuckle) mod here.

Shofuso Tea Garden by atheistsw

atheistsw says: This was suggested to me as a track idea by long-time race fan (and Philadelphia resident) PSN ID: DeathsMom a while back and I’ve finally decided to turn it into a track! Race through this picturesque Japanese Garden complex which makes up just a small part of the vast park network of the city. This one’s for you Mom.

Mark: Many people ask me what I look for in choosing a “Hot Lap” or Track of the Week” and until now I have not really qualified my criteria. I would have to say that I love tracks that take me somewhere. A place I never been or a place I’d like to see. It HAS to be designed well, have good race lines, be fun and offer something that hasn’t been brought up time after time. Not to say a new take on an old idea doesn’t work, I just need to feel compelled to see it. Though many recent tracks have involved amazing and mysterious design elements, they are not enough on their own to take the prize. atheistsw seems to consistently design tracks incorporating all or most of the aforementioned elements in his tracks. At one point near the far end of the track sits a house under shade trees right in the middle of a major turn. I found myself thinking “shhh, be quite” when drifting past this corner. Now I may have “lost it” along the way somewhere but when I play a good track I imagine being there and those type of moments catch me. Put many of those moments in your track and you have my attention, better yet you have my imagination. On the other hand… surprise me! ☺

Mark drools (again): prob_alex has created back to back “Tracks of the Week”. Last week many including myself deemed his Battle of Port Duisburg track “epic” and it is. NOW what do I say?… this track is “epic’er”?, “epic-est”?, “post-epic”?. Thanks prob_alex, now I have to go out and buy a new thesaurus!

Let me illustrate my review of this track.

I had a really hard time not voting this a “Track of the Week”. BlackSamich obviously had a distinct vision in his mind with this design. I was still intrigued by the atmosphere he created with each proceeding lap. Nice job! Great track!
