Welcome, You’ve Been Waiting

It’s with enthusiasm, eagerness and, honestly, a little bit of relief that we lift the cover on our first official Sony Computer Entertainment America company blog – welcome and sorry for the wait.

PlayStation.Blog is a bit of work in progress, we see it as a place where we can share with you our company’s collective insights, opinions and perspectives on all things related to SCEA, PlayStation and the industry we play in.

At the moment, we’re thinking about sharing all sorts of things here, ranging from product news and title announcements to developer updates and industry opinion posts – all of which will come straight from the people here inside SCEA who are working, thinking and playing with this stuff every day. Look to the categories on the sidebar for some initial thoughts we have on future post themes.

Now, what we’ve learned, perhaps the hard way, is that a blog like this is really about you and the things you want to hear, share and discuss with us. With that in mind, you’ll notice that comments are enabled – and encouraged – so tell us what you want to see here and we’ll do our best to make it happen. And yes, like most blogs, we have a comment policy, please just keep this in mind when you’re leaving a comment.

We imagine it may take us a short while to find our pace with this, but bear with us as we get underway and we promise we’ll quickly make this blog a valuable stop in your daily info hunt for PlayStation news.

Like we’ve said, we’re excited to finally have a platform for conversation and connection. Much more is in the works too, so we hope you’ll consider sticking around, kicking the tires of our shiny new blog and sharing what you think.

Enjoy!

  • Very cool, what i would really like to hear is a podcast though, i never heard the OPM podcast untll it was already dead =(

  • Wow, I have been wondering if a site like this would emerge, I am extremely happy that it did!

  • Nice to see a Sony blog. Funny that I caught wind of it from Major Nelson’s blog.

  • This is great. Now we here in SCEA land can enjoy such a great place for information and good times. This is only the beginning.

  • its about time you guys made a blog lol

  • This is great guys!! i always wanted to tell u guys that you’re doing a great job with the ps3………exept……we need more games on the PStore and the console itself…….i would love to get my hands on that new Prince of Persia classic game…anywayzzz u guys rock …laterzzz

  • Great new and Thank you for starting the blog…

  • Good move. =)

I love my ps3. I also play all the other systems.

Looking forward to Home more than any game at this point.

I have to admit, I feel a little bit stupid sometimes paying so much for a ps3 when I see the same games coming out for xbox with additional features (def icon- ipod mode). To be honest, the reason I got your system is because I felt MS is playing it safe with their xbox, and I feel you guys are the visionaries this time around.

But on the flip side, I bought a 20 gig ps3 which i already filled up, i have rumbleless controllers, and it makes me a little bit angry that enhansements are coming out on those areas that I will have to pay extra for.

Here is what I am hoping for:

I hope Home justifies my reason for buying a ps3.
I hope Sony scores some awesome exclusives as they have in the past
I hope Sony gets over Square, as they are playing it safe like their new friends Microsoft, and that Sony can really dive deep into original RPGs– havent seen one that deserves any awards in a while.
Discounts on new controllers that rumble would be nice– or a nice trade in deal.
An adaptor for my DDR mats to work on the ps3
And more than anything else, I just want to see gaming, especially ONLINE gaming, taken to the next level.

Graphics don’t make up for tallented game designers, but the combination of really really good designers, AND the ps3 could be unmatchable in the next year.

  • Oh Yeah! It’s about time!!! All thats left now is an Official Playstation Podcast. Hope you guys come through on that one…

  • i agree 100% with NINJAMASTERDAVE if you guys are putting rumble on the controller it would be nice to have a good trade in deal since the controller was supposed to come with a rumble anyways……wat else ….oh of course the games…..i know i have to wait for fall, but since im out of school and many others are out as well, it would be nice to spend summer playing some games! and an more downloadable content as i’ve said already two comments up. laterzzzzzz

  • Good stuff! Can’t wait for more info. Thanks SCEA.

  • Good to have a place to get some real news, and (hopefully) interaction, from my favorite console company. Maybe this will change the reputation you guys have for being standoffish. Keep up the good work.

  • Wish PlayStation.Blog success, and here we can see the best PS3 & PSP informations everyday !

  • Great Job Sony! I have been waiting for this.

    myspace.com/playstationthree

  • its a start keep it rolling

  • EXCELLENT!!!! Now, I get to see how real PlayStation fans interact with Sony and handle any news that comes their way, all straight from Sony’s mouth(hopefully).

Man, I may give up 1up since I’m the most dedicated fan there and stick to this place.

I just wish that the Circle fanboys would stay away from here and stop hating on the PS3.

The Circle didn’t start off any better than the PS3, it didn’t have any good games at the beginning, and people are expecting the PS3 to run before it can run. It’s pathetic.

I don’t understand why people give the Circle and the Wii the biggest amount of leeway in the world, then become incredibly anal about the PS3.

I don’t care what anyone says, the PS3 rules and the Future will prove me right.

Great Job Sony. Hopefully the execs will actually listen to the suggestions of fans. Or at least take them seriously.

  • Great Idea Sony!

  • Very cool! Thanks a lot for finally putting this together. This is a necessary step towards interacting with your fanbase!

  • Good move! I’ve always wanted to be more involved with the company, this is a great idea!

  • Thank you sony for creating this blog. Hopefully our voices wont go unheard.

  • First off I think this could be great, but it does make the G.A.P. feel a bit useless. I guess that is just me but maybe you should let us know when we are being heard and mention some of what we said instead of just making broad statements.

I would like to see a section dedicated to each firmware, one for the PS3 and one for the PSP that the developers talk to us on what they are doing and can hear our requests.

I know I have many concerning the PSP and even if they seem unlikely I feel they are valid since they are more then possible, the homebrew community has proved all of them as fully functional.

Another thing is that the log-in should be a bit more universal don’t you think?

I have my PS underground account that I have to log into on the forums to speak there while I can log in on the main page and then go straight into the G.A.P. and it seems unfair that by the time I get a PS3 I may not get my name because others may have chosen to get it, I understand that first come first served aspect but you could have bothered to make it more universal since I and many others are unlikely to create elaborate accounts for each when many like to have a consistant online identity.

Another thing would be blogs discussing some of the future hardware developments of the PS3 and PSP, I know the US still hasn’t seen more colors on the PSP and that accessories are import only last I checked. I know that can change and eventually will but these things just like console launches really should be worldwide instead of one region at a time.

  • Thank you Sony.

  • Very cool. I hope this could be a place where things the fans go crazy about could be sorted out, like how to get into betas!
Also, why can’t I use my us.playstation.com account?
    Anyway congrats i’ll visit again.

  • i 100% agree with Korlithiel ^.

  • Enjoy Playstation!!
I love Sony PSP and other Game Playstation!!

  • Great idea Sony!
I love my PSP Metallic Blue.

  • sweeeeeeeeeeeeeetttttttttttttttttttttttttt

  • This is brilliant, but what about Threespeech, the semi-official blog?

they still gonna be up and running

  • It may have been a long time coming, but I’m glad its happening. Hopefully we will get some info on things that concern ps fans that often get overlooked by other sites. Now on to my next concern PSP colors, send a couple to the US will ya!?

  • Amazing, Joystiq, those Microsoft shills, are first to comment on this post. And they sign “Love, Joystiq”.

    Hilarious…

  • Patrick and the SCEA crew,

    Welcome to the jungle guys.

    DigitalBackSpin

  • Good stuff!

  • Keep it honest and this could be a great step ahead for Sony PR.

  • I wish SCEA the best of luck. I have all 3 current gen consoles, and Sony has a lot of ground to make up.

I just hope you guys realize its not PR (good or bad) thats hurting you, its your product. My PS3 is an awesome DVD/Blu-ray player (a standard IR port would’ve been nice though), but it is first and foremost a gaming console. It is sold in the gaming section of stores. So while it does so many other things, as long as it continues to miss the mark in its primary field it will not succeed.

By letting Microsoft be the first ones to the market with the 360, You changed what consumers and the press expected from Sony and the PS3. The 360 has great graphics, we expect even better from the PS3. The XBL experience is amazing, can’t wait to see what the PS3 has. The 360 is a year old with a fairly impressive library, can’t wait to see what the PS3 has at launch. These are the reasons Sony is having a hard time with the PS3, not because of poor marketing, or bad PR. When a company like Sony is allowed to see what the competition has, and then fails to deliver an experience on par with that of the competition, people loose faith in the number one name in the market. Simply because it did not arrive ready to compete with the competition.

History says you can only rule the US console market for 2 consecutive generations.

  • the 360 is wiping the floor on games get sum released at the same time not 2 month later aka colin mcrae.rainbow las vegas and graw 2 and get onto developers to use voice chat aand online in every game

  • This could be a good thing, especially for Sony to start opening up conversations with those of the homebrew community instead of trying to fight against them.

  • lets celebrate ! cheers folks

  • Does anyone know what the big surprise was supposed to be on June 11th? And good luck with the blog Sony. I like this…

  • This is a good start for Sony to be able to get direct feedback and input from its customer base, something probably long overdue. I was wondering what the feasibility would be for something like a Suggestion Box where Playstation users could suggest changes/additions to the consoles and ideas for new games/concepts they’d like to see? Something where people pitch an idea in one or two lines and a Sony rep or the Playstation community could scan them and pick out any worthwhile. Replicated/useless ideas would be marked to avoid duplication. Sony could provide incentives like a console or games collection. I think Sony would get a lot out of this. Just a thought.

  • @Sony/SCEA

One of the things you should do first is to get on the sweet side of the big developers. Sign some deals with them, and dont ignore that exclusives WILL sell your console. Capcom, Team Ninja and a few others have a slightly turned their backs on you.

And if you know whats good for your sales busines you MUST listen to guys like Wollan, Tonad & Thorzhammer. Those guys have supported you even through this VERY rough period in time.

I suggest you try to get exclusives that havent been snapped (or announced yet) by the competition ;(. In the past your dominance lead you to some arrogance, which cost you a LARGE chunk of the gaming community. For god sake, be aware of how much spotlight you got, and that people are watching you constantly. Instead of playing off the pride, sell of the games, cause in the end thats where its all about.

If you have Yakuza 3, Monster Hunter 3, Shadow Hearts 4, Okami 2, Gungrave 3, Silent Hill 5, Shin Megami tensai series, Persona series etc. etc. exclusive to your platform, then you’ll see a big change in your wave. You lost a good portion of fans by empty promises of PS3 launches being, pushed and pushed. To this day I still cant believe you thought you would get away with it. Whenever I recall Kutaragi’s smirking face it gets my blood boiling. That was truely insulting to your fanbase. If you rework your act and straighten up your relationship to your customers/consumers/fanbase then you can only expect alot better things to come out of this (which probably why you made this blog lol).

By the way guys, will you make Home available in Japan? You better make it happen.

  • By the way, as of now I only own a PS3, but was going itno consideration of selling it if I dont see any changes at E3. Sony, goddammit show me theres something to be excited about besides your first party games.

Either way not I just spilled of a bit of my disappointment over you guys lol ;).

  • Love the idea of being able to give feedback that might actually make it to people who can make a difference.

Anthing i say at this point has probably already been mentioned but what the hell.. pushing 350 comments.. one more isn’t going to hurt.

The innovations you have coming out for the system have me quite impressed. i’m one of those with both a 360 and a ps3 and at present there’s no contest. Strangely enough at the moment i’m on the ps3 much more than the 360. The games are there for the xbox but the system is so unstable as to make it unplayable. I’d love to say that my case is an isolated incident but from what i’ve heard i’m far from alone. Hard to enjoy Gears of War when it freezes every 20 minutes. I’m hoping that when demanding games come out for Sony i don’t run into the same problem.

Some quick gripes… The psp was a prime motivating factor in my purchase of a ps3 and i don’t regret buying it for a second. That being said, it seems like the camera and gps are never coming to America. What gives?

I also have some issues with the web browser on the ps3. Generally crashes, freezes and running out of memory. Also it’s impractical to use for email because you seem to be limited to a paragraph or two. Fix these and it’ll be one less reason to turn on my computer.

Also.. If you bring out Ps1 versions of Silent Hill or Resident Evil i’ll buy them. I need my survival horror fix.

Finally.. I picked up Rampart and Gauntlet out of nostalgia but wasn’t that impressed with either one. I understand the need to maintain the authenticity element but the controls on both felt choppy. Giving the option of a visually improved version would’ve been nice too. (sixaxis control on rampart seems like it would’ve made sense as well)

Bring on Home and the Eye. :) It’s too bad there aren’t more decent games out now but i respect that fact that you didn’t force out a flawed system just to be first to launch.

  • Finally!! I guess Phil really meant it when he said you guys were going to be more direct with the public.

  • Thanks for SONY !I’m glad to see this !Hope to read the Playstation-News here .
By the way ,could you tell me when i can play Monster Hunter 3 on your platform.

  • I’ve always said there’s nothing better than a company that actually talks to it’s customers.

I would love some info on the PSP Redesign that’s headed our way, assuming that it is. All we have is rumors! Could you tell us for sure that something is/isn’t happening this year, and let it be that?

Also, the more updates on products we know little about is always a good thing. We went literally, more than 6 months waiting for news on whether or not the PSP Camera/Chotto Shot/Go!Cam was even going to be sold outside Japan! Just some reassurance that it was coming would have been very much appreciated.

    Keep up the great work.
