Welcome, You’ve Been Waiting

It’s with enthusiasm, eagerness and, honestly, a little bit of relief that we lift the cover on our first official Sony Computer Entertainment America company blog – welcome and sorry for the wait.

PlayStation.Blog is a bit of work in progress, we see it as a place where we can share with you our company’s collective insights, opinions and perspectives on all things related to SCEA, PlayStation and the industry we play in.

At the moment, we’re thinking about sharing all sorts of things here, ranging from product news and title announcements to developer updates and industry opinion posts – all of which will come straight from the people here inside SCEA who are working, thinking and playing with this stuff every day. Look to the categories on the sidebar for some initial thoughts we have on future post themes.

Now, what we’ve learned, perhaps the hard way, is that a blog like this is really about you and the things you want to hear, share and discuss with us. With that in mind, you’ll notice that comments are enabled – and encouraged – so tell us what you want to see here and we’ll do our best to make it happen. And yes, like most blogs, we have a comment policy, please just keep this in mind when you’re leaving a comment.

We imagine it may take us a short while to find our pace with this, but bear with us as we get underway and we promise we’ll quickly make this blog a valuable stop in your daily info hunt for PlayStation news.

Like we’ve said, we’re excited to finally have a platform for conversation and connection. Much more is in the works too, so we hope you’ll consider sticking around, kicking the tires of our shiny new blog and sharing what you think.

Enjoy!

  • Wow, went to bed late last night and saw an explosion of comments. Must have been from the folks over in Europe getting going with their Tuesday. Wanted to clarify that this blog is going to be focused on content and business for SCEA.

Anyway, thanks again for the input everyone. We are fixing the ‘Contact Us’ link, altohugh we have received a few hundred emails already (yes, it is an email form). We are doing our best to respond to as many as we can.

  • @Patrick Seybold

“Wanted to clarify that this blog is going to be focused on content and business for SCEA.”

I guess it usually helps to have content to talk about and not games DELAYED for months on end

  • PS3 RULES ADD ME ON THE NETWORK m name is Fazzzy

  • @Patrick Seybold

Ok, so while you fix it, can we get an email address to send the comments?

    Thanks!

  • @Patrick Seybold

    Forget my last comment.

    I forgot about spammers, duh!

Hope you guys can fix it fast.

  • Congrats on the new blog!

Here is a hardware suggestion: Since the PSP can now access PS3, make an option available to gamers that own both PSP and PS3 to configure PSP as a controller for PS3. This way, gamers can make menu selction from PSP without having PS3 stop game play or show opponent in sport games play calls. Similiar to the way the Sega Dreamcast controller worked.

  • I’m glad to see you guys have finally decided to talk to us DIRECTLY and allow us to talk back. It’s a welcomed change :-)

  • @ Patrick Seybold – I’m glad this site is from SCEA. Europe has Three Speech and we’ve been kind of left out of that for a while now. It’s nice that we’ll have our own blog from Sony at last, and also good that you’ll be communicating with SCEE and Three Speech on a regular basis. Good luck with all the emails and comments. Hopefully they have more than just one or two people to keep an eye on this thing. :)

  • Is this website a joke ?
Its anthoer Public Realation DISASTER !
Well you have to hand it to sony, for producing [DELETED] blog websites is this 5th one ?

So some of you guys might be thinking of getting a loan so you can buy a new shiny a Sony Playstation 3. You may be buying it solely just because sony state its console has better Graphics.
Well i thought i would research about it, because, many many sonyfan boys say they would rather pay $200 more, for a console with better and more realistic graphics. So here is the proof.

    Graphics Xbox360 vs PS3

As you may not or know by now that PS3’s graphic card is NVIDIA’s RSX, while the xbox 360 has the ATI’s xenos, which is especially desinged for xbox360.
ATI’s Xenos has been proven to be superior, not only because it has unified shader, edrome support and supports Direct 10x, but also because the xbox 360 console has unified memory.
This means that xbox 360 is able to dedicate more memory for graphics than anything else, the result is bigger more realistic texture that ps3 wont see, because the ps3 invests way too much memory in other things, the memory left for graphics is small compared with xbox360.
While the xbox360 is able to invest up to 490MB for graphics, PS3 has on 256Mb available for its games. In addition PS3’s RSX will not support edram, unified shaders, it has less memory and the results will be similar to Direct x9.

Newer Xbox360 games will support Direct X10.I read somewhere that an update in the near future for DirectX 10 for 360, this will be automatic as it will improve graphics in a 30% to a 40%.

The comparison between Direct X9 (which is similar to the OPENGL technology that PS3 uses) and a Direct X10 which is better, which the 360 uses.

Oh btw I do own a ps3, i waited for 3 years for it, it broke on the 1st night i got it, and so did the replacement, i gess i had over 10% of all ps3s. So then i saved up for week and got a 360 which i can say is overall better than ps3!

I know it herts to say but sony, but xbox360 is better ! They have turned me a hardcore sony gamer in to xbox gamer !

  • You’re an idiot. You obviously know nothing about either machine’s architecture and yet you pretend you do. And come on, it’s pretty clear to see that you don’t have a PS3 and you are just another fanboy.

  • Looks good, I hope it will be updated frequently with real (unedited) posts from people at Sony. :).

  • Good Luck for the site from me as well.

I hope Sony takes the comments from this site to its heart. Some recommendations from me:

    – more PSN updates
    – why was the GTA IV trailer delayed? I hope the second trailer will be online on the 28th!! MS managed to do that!
    – where is the Dirt Demo? MS has one! Also it is a disgrace that this another game coming late for the PS3… How do you want to overtake the XBox360? No 3rd party exclusives, 3rd party games same or lower quality than XBox360 and coming out later and PS3 $200 more expensive…
    – movie trailers should be easy to put on the server? With these you have at least much more updates… Why only 1 or so trailer per week?
    – Where are GTA1 and GTA2 as downloadable games? Talk to Rockstar? They need money, you need downloadable games…

Anyway, good luck, I think you need it.

  • omg shutup xbox live king, you obviously know nothing about the ps3, or very little about it, its capabilities, features, games, upcoming games, etc. go to ur lemmings hole, xbot.

  • @Xbox Live King

As far as I know, the graphic chip has to support the DirectX 10.

If they do add that, it would be software, and I can not produce such big improvements. Where did you read that?

  • @RidgeRacer

    OMFG ..I mean..OMFG

  • To Xbox Live King,

Hi Peter Moore ! If you want to complain about Xbox 360’s reliability problems, I encourage you to talk to Consumer Report. This is the PS3 blog. Everyone knows that PS3 is quiet, compact and stable. I leave it on for weeks all the time ! …unlike certain disc-scratching and overheating white boxes that MS refuse to take back.

Also DX10 is just a set of APIs. RSX has an equally flexible OpenGL, plus you can program on the metal directly for best performance (bypass the API). Marketers should not mumble technology terms and confuse themselves. Come here for more questions if you are interested. I know you have a PS3 at home and play it a lot, don’t be shy.

  • There still isn’t a reason to shell out an extra £200 more than a 360 for this supposed wonder machine. Why are the graphics nothing like what Sony told us they would be like – Motostorm is a million miles away from being as good as the trailer.
Where are the games, why does the pad not rumble,Why is the live service so inferior, why can’t i play my own music in games, why can’t i message my friends when in games, why should i buy a PS3 in light of the competition.
You hyped and you hyped and this is what we end up with ,great thanks Sony.Maybe in 4 years time when there has been a massive cut in price and a greater selection of games that i am unable to get anywhere else.Maybe but probably not.

  • Hey Sony! Welcome to the blogging world. I am a huge XBOX fan and not really impressed with the PS3. But I subscribed to your blog to see what you guys are doing. Please make the Blue Ray an add on like the XBOX 360 and make the price cheaper. Thanks!

  • if sony is going to rip off anything from microsoft it should be an addaptation of their live service. i dont think home is going to do that (at least from what i have seen). i do enjoy the dedicated servers, but if you dont have the experience you have, well, dedicated wasted space. voicechat no matter what you are doing on the console should be standard. the original xbox even had that! (for the most part). i hate the text chat, and im not wasting money on keyboard thats bull****
i dont understand how the dev team failed to pick up on this, and it really does add to the 360’s already substansive lead in the online arena. also the ps3 dash cold and uninviting. it feels ridiculously overcomplicated. it needs simplification, maybe then there will be enough room to voicechat and do something else at the sametime. (kind of like walking while talking) you guys have really dropped the ball on this one; i mean come on you had over a year to emulate the best console online experience and what do we get? f’ing text chat!

  • Ha ha ! You can video chat in PS3 today.

Don’t overrate LIVE. It’s slow and laggy. People there are rude too. I prefer friend list to be partitioned for each game, instead of lumping everyone in 1 simplistic list. Besides LIVE cost money *and* no dedicated server gaming. Resistance on PS3 beats every online game in the competition.

In-game access to XMB is coming. With Home, this will put PS3 miles ahead of the compeition. I like the minimalist XMB and also access my PS3 remotely outside my home. No console can do this. But yes, XMB can be simplified further.

  • Sony launches new official PlayStation Blog « The Fun Bucket

[…] that Sony had launched a new official PlayStation blog today. PR Manager, Patrick Seybold, in the blog’s first entry stated that; PlayStation.Blog is a bit of work in progress, we see it as a place where we can share […]

  • This is great news here and grats on the new blog.

Its gonna be great to get a “insiders” look into the workings of the Playstation universe that I have been part of since the PS1.

I hold Playstation and Sony to a very high standard and will be very very critical of everything that happens.

I hope your ready for me. ^^

  • adropacrich2, you’re wrong.
motorstorm’s graphics are very close to what they were in the trailers. the games are coming if u didnt know, which u wouldnt because obviously ur not into ps products and more of a xbot. just shut it, this blog is for respecting them and suggesting what they need to do and not flaming them because u are the only person here who thinks they suck because you’re a troll and that’s what xbots do when they are bored with their gears, halo, etc.

  • starman1337 if hes playing his ps3 a lot, then what the hell is he playing? theres only one game i got any longevity from and that has been collecting dust for about two months. a lot like my ps3 until the show came out, but that thing is such a laggy peice of crap i am contemplating taking it back. im with you adropachich2. luckily i got mine @ christmas, and diddnt shell out myself. and while i dont hate the ps3 by any means i am dissapointed in what has been put forth. luckily i have my 360 to keep me busy until a descent non-multiplatform game hits. better 360 multiplayer, online services, and achievements will keep me away from ports. and if anyone wants to call me a fanboy look at the screename ppl. however yes i am leaning m$

  • oh the violence…. cant we all just get along :)

  • I smell a ban…

  • ….cant we play a bit of guitar hero first…ya know like men :P then u can stab lol

  • ridgeracer you need some therapy. oh and motorstorm while descent does not compare, and sony doesnt have “home” yet…. so what your saying is that motorstorm is why xbox king should not be aloud to voice his opinion? you really need to seek help!

  • You girls need a nap.

  • This is awesome! I can’t wait for the podcast :)

  • dude RidgeRacer, chill out man
    this isnt a fight
    just chill
no need to cuss everyone out,k? i agree with u on xbox live king
but there’s no need to go overboard and flame everyone that doesnt like the ps3 as much as us. i understand what SNAKE75 is getting at, even tho i disagree with him in most of the things he said because i personally prefer the ps3, but to each his own. keep this blog clean of flaming and xbots. plz

  • says the guy named after RIIIDDDGGEEE racer lol

  • yes i cant wait for the podcast either and i seriously hope they update each of the sections including Developers Corner and
    Title Spotlight.

  • good luck sony keep u the good work

    psn: citybeat

  • well he’s obviously a fanboy.
because he flames everyone who disagrees with him so he’s being pretty selfish and arrogant, tbh.

  • @RidgeRacer

    Bill, is that you?

  • Finally !!!!

Heres to hoping you guys actually have a voice in the world of playstation, and bridge the gap that currently exists between the users and Sony.

Please listen to us (the coherent, sane and civil ones , mind you) so that the powers that be listen to you guys!!

    Happy to have you guys!

  • Cool idea Sony, hope that with all these comments, the suggestions don’t get overlooked.

First to all flamers: What are you doing? This is a site run solely for the purpose of giving information to the public straight from Sony execs/devs/whatever. These comments are supposed to be aimed at giving them user advice on how we would like to see the site develop. So stop flaming Sony and their products. If you have some complaints, put them through the proper mediums in a mature manner and see what you can do to get them addressed. Otherwise, stop posting, it’s useless and taking up unecessary space.

Anyways, things that I would want to see come from this blog:

    1. I really like the idea. Letting the customers hear things straight fro the developers mouth is pretty awesome. I won’t have to go digging through other gaming websites to find interviews with Sony employees concerning their thoughts on the systems and upcoming games. However, at the same time, this has the ability to become another PR site. I read the early comments, and you said that you guys were having all kinds of people contribute to this blog, PR included, and thats cool. What I’m worried about is this becoming a site where the PS3 is made to be a Deus Ex Machina. It’s a great system, and I purchased one on launch day, but there are always improvements that can be made. If this is going to be a blog about new things from Sony, hardware or software, then lets hear both sides of the stories. I want to hear about the awesome things that are comign out, but I also want to hear about delays, pushbacks, and troubles in production. The majority of posts should be fashioned in such a way that they allow for users to bring forth constructive criticism, letting the consumer voice be heard. This is my main desire for the site.

    2. Let us, the users/consumers have some say every now and then. I think it would be pretty awesome if some of the guys at Sony were debating an idea for the PS3 or PSP and brought their debate to this blog, asking us whether we would like decision A or decision B more. I think that would bring a lot of people to this blog, and would keep it more oriented towards bringing out the best products possible.

Congrats on the new blog, and hopefully things turn out well.

  • This is a great step forward for Sony and the Playstation brand. I can’t wait to see how it develops!

  • to Adropacrich and Xbox Live King…

are you idiots for real? why don’t you do us all a favor and go somewhere else. you obviously have no idea what the h3ll you’re talking about. you obviously don’t own a PS3. and you’re obviously completely retarded and if you’re older than 12 years old that’s just sad.

if you don’t even own a PS3 don’t comment on it. that’s like rating a movie you’ve never seen. point is…YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IN H3LL YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT.

the fact you even saw Sony’s new blog and came on here just to spew nonsense about a console you know nothing about makes you completely pathetic and lame. sad part is you probably have no idea that you’re even that big a loser.

people who dress up like Obi Wan at Star Wars premiers are cooler than you. lol.

  • How often will this blog be updated?
    []^XO

  • I own a PS3. I’ve played many PS3 games (At the game shop, so many of them are absolute crap I ask if I can play the game before I buy)

I’ve bought 1 PS3 game, and it was a sports title (Most generic multi-console genre)

I swear, if I could take the PS3 back I would but it was a gift. It’s such a horrible console, playing it makes me want to kill myself. I hope sony fails miseribly.

  • Great job ladies and gentlemen and good luck with your blog. I know I’ll be looking forward to what you have to say here.

    Thanks again
    TM

  • Yeah, one thing I would like to add is kudos for your hardware team.

It runs quiet, cool and not a problem at all.

  • Well, I guess Sony can add the money spent on this site to their multi-Billion dollar PS3 money hemorrhage machine right now because nothing good will ever come of this pathetic site.

Seriously, I don’t know why this site was started in the first place. You already have the infrastructure to spread uselessly biased information through print media, the radio, and idiotic sites like Kotaku. Why create your own? Do you honestly think that a real “web community” is going to coalesce around your blatant advertising? It boggles the mind that no matter how much money is spent or how many new ideas are tried, Sony Marketing strikes out EVERY TIME.

    Welcome to the blogosphere, Sony.

    You’re Late.
