PS3 Firmware Upgrade 1.81 Coming Tomorrow

403 0

Just a quick update: we’ll be making available firmware upgrade 1.81 tomorrow which will fix a few small issues some of you have noticed. Most notably is the RGB Full setting which a few of you wrote in about. In 1.80 we added an option to the XMB under settings allowing you to choose between RGB Full and Limited. Basically if you are connecting your PS3 to your TV using an HDMI cable, and if your TV supports RGB full range, the picture quality may be improved when this option is set to Full. Some of you pointed out that the Full setting would sometimes revert back to Limited and 1.81 will address this issue. Please keep in mind that this setting is only effective when the PS3 is connected to a TV using an HDMI cable. You can download the update tomorrow from PlayStation.com [update: the upgrade is now available, you can download it here] or through your System Update option on the PS3 XMB.

We’re continually evaluating and improving PS2 software compatibility too. Where we can, we’ll look to share similar updates like this on our blog moving forward. Thanks for your ongoing feedback and support!

  • Thanks for the heads up on the update…

but you guys seriously need to address those lame updates to the PS Store…

Both other consoles are overwhelmed with gaming content and demo’s etc…

Give us some heads up on this please…

  • One update I would like to see soon is the ability to create your own online gamer picture. Since you can designate a picture as your account picture, why can’t you do this for your online gamer picture?

Also, I would like to make my own background. Yeah, the standard PS3 background animation is cool looking, but as a designer and animator, I would love to be able to create my own background.

Give us the ability to customize, please!

  • I wan’t XMB in game!!!

  • what about an update to upscale 720p games to 1080i please!
for those of us with a 480p/1080i old HDTVs

  • crystallakekiller

hi,can somebody help me….i want to know if some of you have the same problem that i have with my ps3…..it happen maybe once each 3-4 hours of play time…the problem is that the controller “jam”..just like i am losing the signal, and everytime it last for 4-5 sec…i called sony and they said they never heard about it before, but the problem is its my 2nd ps3 and i had the same problem with the other one!i would like to know if some of you had the same problem and how did you fix it! and i hope the upgrade 1.81 will fix it!thank you

  • it would be AWESOME if they could put the XMB to be accessed in-game…although i know it will take a while for that, oh well i can wait :]

  • where is our in game xmb with custom soundtracks and wallpapers?

  • Game Stooge » PS3 Firmware Goes 1.81 Tomorrow, Fixes HDMI Issues: The most up to date gaming and tech news blog on the planet.

[…] official site, Playstation.blog, informs us that the Playstation 3 will be getting a minor tune-up tomorrow with version 1.81 of […]

  • please Sony! As a loyal Playstation gamer, make the Ps3 capable of playing music and games at the same time. Please!

  • Please add wallpaper support and ability to launch XMB while in game. Also, since AAA games are not on the near horizon, more demos and PSN games and less trailers.

  • thanks for the news. I would like to know if and when the Virtua Arcade stick will regain its backward compatability that it lost with the 1.8 firmware. Thanks

  • Great another useless update. =) God I love turning my PS3 on just to update. yay for updates..Hey! I just noticed something this 1.81 is like 2.81 on the psp! USELESS!

  • Oh, so that was bug. I thought my PS3 was crazy and always switched back to limited. Good to hear that is going to be fixed.

Also, since you’re director of PSN Operations, are you in any way affiliated with the PS Store? The PS Store needs to get more content. Todays update was pretty weak; a game and a trailer. I hope you guys can add more content like demos of upcoming games.

  • Yeah I agree with # 120. Made a lot of sense why were not getting any demos or good game ports because there leading platform is on the xbox 360. Well one game we can expect to look very good is Dynasty Warriors: GUNDAM since the ps3 is the leading platform for that game.

  • First off – this is my first comment on the blog and I have to say that it’s good to see Sony being more proactive in reaching out to it’s customers. WIth Major Nelson and all the 360 feels like a real community and the PlayStation 3 was feeling a little, well, cold. Keep up the good work!

Maybe a podcast next? Both via the web so I can get it on my iPod and via the PSN, naturally. :)

That said – I really have to add my name to the list of people asking for, in order of just how realistic they probably are:

    – More PSN content! Seriously! It can’t be that hard to add stuff more often than just on Friday. I hate to mention the 360 but Microsoft adds stuff every day, be it trailers or game previews or demos or whatever.

    – Ability to change my background. The “time of day” haze is getting a little old.

    – XMB access in game – at least access to music playback and friends lists so you can play a podcast or what have you, or even better, add friends while you’re in games that, for no reason I can think of, don’t let you do so (cough, cough, MotorStorm).

  • The only updates that I’m ever gonna look forward to is will there ever a way to make PS2 games region free!

  • As you can see PSstore content seems to be quite the concern for your loyal fans. You should be ashamed at the opportunity you have squandered. You have done an AWFUL job with the store content, especially during this time of the year when retail games are at a trickle. I wonder if your board of directors cares at all that the PS3 community has their wallets open wide and are screaming at you to take their money, all the while you turn a deaf ear. Do yourselves a favor and REALLY use this blog to listen to us. Don’t fool yourselves for one minute that a movie trailer is anything that we are interested in. We want more games, more demos, music and movies….and if you give us these, we’ll pay.

P.S. in game XMB, custom wallpaper & soundtracks.

  • When are we getting in-game XMB and Wallpaper support AKA firmware 2.0? BTW Thanks for the HOME invite today!

  • pleeeeeeeeeeeease sony, available XMB access from within a game

  • I totally agree with the more PSN content… weekly demos, more PS1 classics, etc. The in-game XMB is a huge thing though. More people want this than you might think.

  • Dose anybody at sony know if theirs going to be news on the game “EIGHT DAYS” at this years e3. At last years e3 this was the game to me that defined what a ps3 game should look like. Would love to hear more about it.

  • I love the whole idea of firmware updates
it truly keeps the system fresh and with substantial updates like media server connectivity I can only dream of what else is possible.

However I have to complain about the whole organizational structure of the music and to a lesser extend video sections on both the PS3 and PSP. Both need changed with the ability to add folder structure. I just want Artist Folder –> Album Folder –> Album Tracks. None of this artist then 100 songs from all 10 albums listed, who wants to go though 100 or more songs to find one they want.

Also just a minor thing for me but the ability to read an NTFS and future Windows formatted HDD’s would be a huge plus for convenience sake as all my drives are NTFS right now even my Sony MicroVault Pro 8GB

So what going on with the SIXAXIS touch sense controller will we be rumbling soon?

Also on that note will there ever be any PlayStation branded accessories such as Bluetooth headset and Bluetooth keyboard for XMB and Yellow Dog Linux.

I want to fully embrace the PS3 as a media center but it needs just a few fixes such as the ones listed above, and a PS3 media manager like the one PSP has from Sony Media Software would be extremely helpful especially if it would enable files to be sent wirelessly from a PC possibly eliminating the need for the ability to read the NTFS.

    Keep up the great work!

  • The RGB in full looks nice on my Bravia. :)

But what about the sign-in failure when I return to the XMB from a game or menu feature. I always have to manualy select it again since 1.80

  • #120…Excellent read. I just want to thank Sony for such a great system, all the hard work the’ve been doing to make us all happy. As the saying goes, “Good things come to those who wait” and although tough, I think it definately applies here. Remember, we already have the most powerfull system available, and its going to keep getting better.

  • great to hear about fixing the full RGB selection

  • v1.81 is out for Japanese PS3!

Not sure about the US version tho. You guys need to check for updates ;-)

  • Now available in the US =)

  • v1.81 also available for European PS3, already updated mine. :)

  • Downloading as we speak. I’m eager to see what issues have been fixed. :)

  • For such a relatively small update it does seem to take a long time. Does it download and reinstall the entire OS? By the way you guys might want to update the PS3 System Update History on the Playstation.com site.

    http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates/history.html

  • dont even bother writing to sony at this site. they dont read what people is writing and what they want.

Sony u make me angry…..you will not like me when i am angry mohahahahahahhaaahaaaaa.

  • Any chance we could get the RSX hypervisor restriction lifted in an upcoming update? PS3 Linux would be much better if it had better access to RSX.

  • Any chance we can get a “force 1080p24 ON” option in the next firmware ?

    Please ?

1080p24 looks awesome when I connect my PS3 directly to my display, but my RX-V2700B AVR is incorrectly telling the PS3 that the display does not support this mode.

So can we please have a “forced on” mode like the standalone BD player ?

  • Would it be possible for you Sony to have up a live streaming feed from E3 for our PS3. I know xbox usually just uploads video clips but i been streaming video flawalessly on my PS3 from sites such as youtube. So for us PS3 fanboys what about providing a live feed from E3. Dosent have to be everything but Killzone should be mandatory.

    Think about it.

    Sony forever!

  • Hmm,
The release is now out. I wish that I could just download it from the website. It would be nice not having to download it from the internet directly to my PS3.
I’m on my second attempt to install it. The first time I tried to install it, the PS3 would not recognize my controller during the “Press the PS button” part of installing this update. Even though my controller was plugged into the USB port, it would not work.
Thankfully I was able to use my Pelican adapter to click the PS3 button and cancel the upload. I guess I could have plugged in my old PS2 game controller and continued with the install, but that would have meant finding it and removing my guitar from the adapter. I guess I was too lazy to do that. Actually, I just wanted to make sure that the install works like it is supposed to work, so I am trying it again.

So I am now on my second attempt…

What a fantastic update for those of us without an HDMI input. I guess I bought my HDTV too soon. HDMI came out about 2 months after I bought my HDTV.

I wouldn’t bother with this update tonight except that I want to play my MLB2k7 game online.

I have no clue if this game is better than “The Show”, because there are no demos of the show to download. I bought MLB2k7 after getting the demo. I will buy “The Show” if the demo is good.

Get it? Not enough demos to download! I thought that

Why is it taking me days to download Ninja Gaiden Smegma? I forgot that I was downloading it.

Please, more content to the playstation store.

When can we play divx encoded or avi encoded files? Firmware 2.0??? No problem, I just have convert them to MPEG format while I am asleep or at work.

1.80 was awesome. I still wish it was easier to play my music, but it is great being able to stream the stuff from my computer.

Almost ready to try to install 1.81 a second time…

  • Wow, the same problem!!!

The PS3 is not recognizing my controller.
I have not had this issue with any other updates.

I just found my old PS2 controller and used my Pelican adapter to use it to finish the install.

Am I the only one with this problem?

I hope I’m not screwing up my PS3 by installing this upgrade too soon…

  • Bring more option in the XMB. Also make it accessable during gameplay, so I can look at my friends or listen music. Remember these are the little things that help push sales. Ipod functionality would de decent as well.

  • Why is it that when I leave a comment, I’m kicked back to the main page?

PS3 is finally updated. I had to use my old PS2 controller hooked up to my Pelican adapter to finish the install.

The PS3 would not find my PS3 controller, even though it is hooked up to the USB port.

Everything seems to be working just fine. The PS3 controller is finally working again. It is working both wired and wireless.

I can hardly wait for my trip back to the main page once I hit the “Submit” button…..

Wish there was something more to download from the store. At least Ninja Gaiden Smegma is finished…

  • I want to begin by saying… I love Sony. I try to buy Sony when I can. You guys as a company do pretty great job at giving customers what they want. Owner of a PS, PS2, and a PS3 and only minor complaints. Other Sony products as well.
I was just wondering if anyone thought that these suggestions were worth considering?………
How about access to the XMB from within a game. Instead of having to quit and restart when you want to do something else? Just a thought….
How about being able to type without having to bring up the virtual keyboard?… for obvious reasons. Just make an option to shut it off….Just a thought.
How about not having to o.k. everything you do?… Especially on the WEB. Make an option to always enable JAVA Script or open in a new window or not…..Just a thought.
And last and the most important to me… my pet peeve…. Let’s make a controller that has mouse like sensitivity. To much dead zone. Come on guys…. the tech has been there along time. Things should be fluid…
    Just a Thought.
It’s great to see Sony taking time to listen. But please……. listen.

  • Umm,

The PS3 has always worked with my IPOD…

I wish it would recognize the playlists, but at least I can listen to my music, watch my videos, and access any PS3 formatted movies that I have stored on my video IPOD.

  • I guess this was our lame June Update. Sony for the love of God, please just give us XMB in-game as well as more multi-tasking like listening to your own music in-game from your PS3 or accessing the browser while in-game.

  • XMB in game would be the perfect update Sony ;)

  • i just got my update i didnt need

  • Sony Thankyou for the update
please can you stop with the region blocking, europe should get demos trailors etc the same time as the good old usa.i dont like saying it but when ever there is a arcade game on xbox 360 europe gets it aswell the same time.you have the potential to be the best there is in your field, you own your own movies music etc you should be leading from the front not being lead from a company that only buys games and developers to make its console look good. please stop the region block out and release demos arcade games at the same time also please get the movie service up and running and music. thankyou

  • WARRIC is right about region blocks. Also, PS3 games with online support shouldn’t be region blocked. PAL users playing Resistance should be compatible with US Resistance gamers. What’s the point with limiting the games’ region like that? It should be global online gaming.

  • Still, I have to say this update is some good news after all. My only gripe is the PSN Euro store. Sony, please get some games out fast for it. I want to burn some money buying games. It’s not cool how you’ve ignored us Euro users.

But I rejoice about your decision to continue emulator backwards compatibility support. That’s great to hear. Keep this up Sony, keep it up.

  • mckmas8808 – Stop acting like a blooming idiot.

Everything isn’t going to be released when you want it. If it is on its way, then it has to undergo extensive testing like everything else or it will just need to be fixed after the release. That is after everyone like you complains that it is a piece of crap even after crying that it isn’t out soon enough.

193- International Resistance online play is coming, well it has been bumped back twice, hopefully it will be here before months end. (Starting to doubt that, because it sounds like it is becoming a trend that I hate to be part of)

  • 194 – No one is ignoring Europe. Did you see the US update?

Go!Puzzle and a Second “Hot Rod Trailer” I hardly call that attention. Euro’s like the rest of the world is seems, is going to have to bite the bullet and wait.

Unless you are Japan with PS1 games.

  • I’ve just download Go Puzzle for my PS3, and on the ONLINE MULTIPLAYER function, while my opponent is able to play on their half, my game CURSOR is unable to move. No matter how much I press my D-Pad or push my Analog Stick, IT WILL NOT MOVE. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME?!! Also, in the “Lobby”, when I am prompted to “X” the “Ready?” icon, I can’t seem to be able to, no matter how much I press my “X” button.

WHAT IS THE DEAL?!!! WHY ME?!!!

  • Wow…. most of you are freaking whiners.
