Firmware 1.82 Coming Soon…

562 0

Hey everyone, you told us you wanted to hear about updates a few days in advance, so here’s a quick heads up that we have a PS3 firmware update in the works. [UPDATE: it’s available today]

Firmware 1.82 is an update that enables the playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files. As most of you know, these are high quality files that you’ll now be able to play on your PS3. Hopefully this update is moving us closer to the audio playback features many of you commented about in my post the other week. We’re continuing to evaluate and improve things across the board, including PS2 software compatibility. Thanks for all of your support and feedback, keep it coming!

  • Tiddy187 about iTunes, you mean DRM free iTunes.
iTunes DRM would cost sony about 100billion and then some (ain’t gonna happen)

Apple’s now worth more then dell, go figure.

  • Someone that use iTunes should own Wii… WTF?

Anyone use Dell needs to get there head check, if you support Bill Gate then just holding us back 10 more years, UNIX rules all..

  • splosneer,

You lack some basic knowledge, buddy.
I’m not gonna argue with you about those fundamental stuff.

  • Neither an I horny.
    1.82 is OUT!

  • @ Xplosneer

    Its out already?

  • Herby it is true. I just checked myself.

My PS3 is updating to 1.82 right now. (10%).

  • ITS HERE!!

  • Well that is damn sweet.

That caught me off guard. Usually it is on Thursday they do it.

I can’t wait to see the full change log

  • Just downloaded and updated! Boo Ya. I’m gonna test out the videos right now!

  • Yep, the update is live.

Nothing I really need, but its helpful to some.

  • 1 demo every week would be great.

  • Sounds great, a simple addition I would like to see is a “Delete All” option under the music/video/picture sections, so I can delete everything out and start over. Simple, but handy : )

  • With so many comments, I’m not sure if this one will be read but Sony please hold off on these .1 updates unless it’s a bug fix.

Don’t get me wrong, updates are always a good thing but when it’s only adding something really minor like this (in my opinion) it’s actually just annoying.

The reason it’s annoying is that the update process takes too long. As I type this, I am waiting for my PS3 to download the latest firmware and wow is it taking a long time. Not only that, but once it downloads, I have to go to my console and plug in the usb cable (if I can find it) to activate it. Holy crap!

Whenever I update my 360 it takes like 4 minutes (downloading and updating) tops. I’m lucky if I am able to just download the ps3 update in 10 minutes.

Seriously, streamline this process more efficiently SOMEHOW!

  • Oh not what I wanted, but nice to see the PS3 being updated. Will be waiting for the big 2.0.
I want my custom BGs and it sucks how custom music is up to the developers. Sony needs to make it mandatory!

  • @homy

xplosneer answered this, and I already covered it in my last post. 1080i has a functional resolution of 1920×1080 that’s updated every 30th of a second, with each half-frame updated every 60th of a second. One field of 1080i has half the pixels of a frame of 1080p, but 1080i still displays a full 1920×1080 image.

Also, one field of 1080i still has about 12% more pixels than a whole frame of 720p, and a full 1920×1080 frame has over twice as many pixels as a full frame of 720p.

So no, what I wrote wasn’t “half true”, and I did have my facts straight in the first place, unlike you and afrosheen.

  • XMB in game is a must listening to your own music while playing a game is much better than a game sound track. Some more XMB customizing options would also be nice. Wallpaper and menu layout. You shouldnt be able to access your videos from your music menu its repetitive. I’m sure this will all be worked out sony can not afford for this to fail and the best thing they can do is listen to the owners.

    DON’T BUY MICROSOFT

  • Any chance for ogg-vorbis and ogg-flac audio support any time in the future? It’s not like it’ll cost anything, since it is patent-free and license-free.

  • I’m trying to download the 1.82 Firmware, presumably from the Australian servers, given my location, and it’s taken over an HOUR, with my connection repeatdly getting dropped by the servers, and it taking several attempts to re-connect. Without a “resume” function in the firmware download, this is becoming extremely frustrating.

    Please can you:
    1) Provide sufficient download capacity or global server load balancing in order to support the influx of download requests when new software is released

    2) Build in a “resume” function to the download client so that it doesn’t go back to 0% each time it needs to restart?

  • Here are some more ideas, many of which im sure were probably mentioned already

    1) Subfolders so that pictures, music, videos and demos can be categorized better

    2) PSP as a remote control: Exact interface as it is now for remote play, but instead of playing content on the PSP it would play it on the PS3

    3) XMB Voice recognition: Meaning if i have a bluetooth headset and i say “music” the Music icon would be highlighted and i can then say the name of a song and it will play. Much like Speech recognition in Windows and Voice Dialing in cell phones

    4) Tidbits
    —More music visualizations
    —Create music/video playlist!
—Startup choice, it always goes to the games section, would be nice to have it start at music, videos or friendslist
    —Wallpapers
    —Sequential video playing
—Password user accounts and files (may not want kids to see everything)

  • I’d still like to see:

Audio being output through both optical and multi-out or HDMI without manually switching them back and forth. Sometimes I use my receiver, sometimes the TV speakers.

  • When will we see ps2 games as opposed to ugly playstation one games on the Playstation Network without cutting the grass from under the ps2 feet?

  • Also in regards to everyone’s dismay as to the amount of content on PSN, im curious to know why this is. I dont know the Ins-Outs of business, but its a little baffling to me to find that games like Virtua Fighter have Demos at PS3 kioskd but we cant get them from PSN….please explain

  • I like 420 comment, yes the PSP could be a great remote and could control other things like x-10 lighting for theater rooms and controlling other devices like a dish network vip 622 satellite unit and stereo receivers. I love my bluetooth remote but a cool PSP remote would be cooler. And if you could hookup to the vip 622 usb and get access to content on that hard drive that would be cool also.

  • I just updated my PS3 to Version 1.82

  • I also would like to see a Aibo type robot device with wireless video transmission, that i could move around my house remotely, maybe the PSP could control it and talk though the PS3. You may ask why? my wife is handicap and sometimes she will fall down in a remote room if I could drive a robot around and see if she is ok this would be great, sound would be a plus also. As more people age and younger generation have to support them this could be a valuable tool for independence.

  • I love the PS3, if only for now because 1) my photos look great, 2) I’ve been able to play good music on there, and 3) Blu-Ray movies are lookin’ superb.

But I’ve been away for the past two months, and I’m going to be gone for the next year. That being said…please Eric, hear my concerns. It’s a great console, unleash it…

    1) in game XMB controls, with the ability to hear your own tunes. Especially during Madden. I can only hear him explain the 3-4 so many damn times. I’d rather listen to Radiohead or the Flaming Lips. But definitely not the Cure.

    2) The web browser is flat out garbage. Garbage. I had high hopes with my PSP, but it stunk. None of the updates added any functionality to it, even on the PSP. My Wii has an opera browser on it, and it’s not bad. Here are your options: Firefox or Safari. I’m sure this community would support either. But right now…it sucks, flat out. Why Safari? Go to number three please.

    3) Make nice with Apple. They’ve got these little things called iPods. And a lot of people have them. What would be really sweet is if there was a channel on the XMB for iTunes interface. Not only could you Download from Apple, but you could synch your iPod up, saving the blasted trip to your “other” computer (you’re still calling the PS3 a “computer”, right, Eric?). So make amends with Apple, get the agreements, and allow me to watch the episodes of 24 I’ve downloaded already available to me on my PS3! In return, ditch the hideous browser for Safari. I’ve already spent 600 bucks on my PS3, allow me to have a good browser. I would just love to have the ability to browse, store, watch, and listen to all the Apple-proprietary media on my PS3. Possibly a pipe-dream, I know. One could hope.

    4) Another channel that would be “killer”: an internet radio channel on the XMB. I’ve got one on my TiVo. I’ve used it a bit, and I really like it. And I think everyone who’s using wireless routers would probably love to have that ability. And even if they haven’t used it, it’s just another “reason” to give the PS3 a fighting chance.

    5) Last, but not least, fix the problems with WRT54G routers. Every Wal-Mart in america has ’em. Linux community loves ’em. They’re easy to mod, easy to set up, and for me: plug and play, good to go. I haven’t had problems with mine yet (again, I’m away for a year and a half), but I’d love to have all the available resources to me when I get home.

Just some of the things I would like. I’m a tech geek: but I’m only a tech geek when things make sense, and they work. I don’t want to have to go to third party apps, blah blah blah, to make my .whatever file work. Please, just update the firmware, make the friends in the field, and let’s see what the PS3 can do against the competition. You are DEFINITELY making compelling steps in the right direction.

  • Most of the other playstation firmware update related forums are raving that they would buy a ps3 if it had XVID and DIVX support.

The rest of them are looking for xmb access while playing games

  • WE WANT XMB ACCESS DURING GAMES!!!!!

    WE WANT XVID AND DIVX!!!!

  • Great work Sony. Kudos in the highest degree. But for thought, as stated above, we need XViD compliant software. All my movies are in that codec and it is too much a hassle to convert it due to the lack on PC power. Now I ask, would it be possible to include this in, possible, 1.83?

  • Supporting open standards for video/audio playback is fine. It’s unreasonable to expect Sony to license third-party CODECs.

I’m not yet convinced that I need XMB access during a game. When I’m playing a game, I’m … playing a game, not thinking about messing with the XMB. Maybe it would be useful for switching to a different application/game, but that’s about it. However, when Home arrives, I can see how having access to the XMB from within that environment would be very useful.

  • Fantastic, another firmware release, and no sign of a “forced on” option for 1080p24 :(

Can we please have an official answer from Sony on this issue, rather than just being ignored ?

  • On the PSP I used to see change logs on every firmware update that would tell you what features were added in the firmware you downloaded when you went to install it, which was really nice since it’d let me know any new menu options that were added to the XMB without having to take the time to navigate all the menu options after an update (it’s an instinctive reaction I can’t help it (: ). Did they stop doing this for the PS3 or have I just been missing them entirely?

  • UPDATE IS OUT! Just thought I let you guys know. I am downloading it right now.

  • Just installed the new firmware. I’m getting a lot of NETWORK ERROR online and I’m getting disconnected every few minutes. Hope this is just a one-day thing.

  • I downloaded the new update but I have no idea what it includes. Hope it’s good stuff. Sony keep moving forth. Death to the devilbox 360.

  • mohahahahahaaaaaaaaaaa

now about that XMB ACCESS DURING GAMES……

  • @jh2112,
Where did I say you think it’s wrong?
What you explained the second time was right but not xplosneer. One field of 1080i is half the resolution of 1080p frame. Two fields make up one frame. That’s a basic stuff.
But that’s not the problem I’m talking about.
The problem is that there is not such tv that can display 1080i natively if the tv is not 1080p. All other tvs scale the 1080i resolution down to their native resolution. Therefore the resolution may get distorted. It is better to view 720p on 720p tv than 1080i on 720p or any other resolutions.
I don’t know how to make myself clearer.

  • Sony; I thought we were friends? Why the secrets? I heard through the grapevines about the rumble featureof the six-axis being introduced at E3. Is there any truth to this?

  • Yes we really want…IN-GAME XMB ACCESS!!

BUT one thing that I really want is the ability to SAVE MULTIPLE NETWORK CONFIGURATIONS!

    Just like the PSP.

I take my ps3 to my sister’s house and have to enter in her encryption key every time, which is like 20 characters.

  • cool, That was quick. Update is already here :D Thanks for quick delivery. Esp for Australia :D

  • You guys are going to hate me but I will keep posting this messege to Eric Lempell until he responds to me directly. Mr.Lempell, on behalf of myself and other PS3 owners, please take my following advice to make gamers play their PS3.
    1. XMB during playing a game, just like the 360, I want someone to call me via headset and I can answer in game while I press the START/PS button.
    2. Comment box on the network that directly feeds to your R&D so that you can see what the majority of owners are in demand for.
    3. Have us tell you what classic PS1 and PS2 games we want updated, with maybe online features, like Jet Moto 1 but online multiplayer, or Return Fire with online multiplayer.
    4. Team up with Sega or Nintendo and have classic games from all previous sytems also on the network, gives us more of a variety.
    5. Re-create great games like Vigilante 8 or Syndicate Wars for next gen.
    6. Make the Internet Explorer better, its lame and not user friendly.
    7. Give us an application so that we can rip PS1 and PS2 games onto our harddrive just like I can with computer games onto my PC.
    8. While Im speaking on my headset, let me navigate anywhere I want just like 360 owners can.
    9. Fix the glitch to where my music can actually stream from my PC to my PS3, why can my pictures and videos work but not my music? Its not a user problem Im not an idiot, I set it up and the first night it worked right, the next day Music didnt work.
    10. When we do an update, tell us exactly what the update is.

That is all for now Eric, I hope this helped, you can contact me at

    roastermuffin@hotmail.com

I hope to hear from you soon as to what your going to do about my advice. As for everyone else you can email me directly or leave a messege here, I want to know realistically what other peoples ideas are as to how to make the PS3 that much better.

  • we know

  • how do i stream pictures and stuff from my pc to my ps3 do i need a cable or something???

  • Farhad91..the easiest to take pictures and items and transfer them from you computer to your ps3 with a sony stick,or sd card, if you have a 60gb…that’s what i do..i think there is a way you can hook something up through the usb..
