We’re Just Getting Started…

New Sony PSP
What a week! E3 is always an exciting time of year when we can roll up our sleeves and finally show you what we have planned for the year and beyond. As I’m sure you saw, on Monday we announced we are expanding the purchase options for PS3 by adding a new PS3 model to the market in August with an 80GB HDD. We also were able to engineer some cost savings into hardware production of PS3 and lowered the purchase price of our 60GB model by $100, effective immediately. We feel that is a substantial price reduction and hope if you haven’t purchased a PS3 yet, it will encourage you to do so. You probably also heard that we introduced a new, sleeker PSP; new features for our PlayStation Home service; and, as promised: games, games and more games.

This holiday and fiscal year more than 400 games are coming to PlayStation fans in North America. There will be over 120 PS3 titles including what we’re showing here at E3: Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, The Eye of Judgment, PAIN, Echochrome, SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals Confrontation, SingStar and many more. All of those are exclusive to the PS3, and those are the ones just from us. We also showed at our press conference today other exclusives from our third party partners, like Haze, Unreal Tournament 3 and the one you have been commenting so much about on this very blog, Metal Gear Solid 4.

In addition, the PSP will score more than 140 games and PS2 over 160 this year. And, if you didn’t get a chance to see the new Star Wars Battlefront PSP Entertainment Pack, be sure to check out the pictures I’ve included here with this post. The Darth Vader image on the back of the new white PSP is pretty cool, in my opinion.

Our goal right now is simple: to provide you with the most compelling gaming experience possible, and as we are showing here this week, we are well on the way to achieving that goal.

Right now is a good time to reflect and say thank you. Thank you for being passionate members of the video game community and part of the PlayStation family. The best is yet to come.

RE5 can’t come out fast enough along with LBP and Warhawk

Call of Duty 4 was meh made me want to play Battlefield

Rock Band > Guitar Hero 3

Kane and Lynch > Merc 2

    Timeshift > TimeCrisis 4

Assassin Creed > WiiSports (yea equal comparision)

  • THANK YOU SONY!!!!!

It’s nice to know that you are going the extra mile in making sure my purchase is validated by giving me everything i thought i wanted in a console, and THEN SOME.

  • Great job Jack! Sony acually pulled it off, you don’t know how happy your consumers are. I was starting to lose faith in you guys, I mean, with the exclusives jumping ships you managed to keep the biggest. All we need is Final Fantasy XIII to stay exclusive, the new rumble controller, and the rumored 2.0 update. I wouldn’t mind having some demos in the store tomorrow, as well as the E3 conference in 1080P.

As for the PSP, I like the new specs, but I was wishing for a desing similar to the MYLO. I will still add a white PSP to my classic black PSP :). Again, well done guys, go have a few drinks on us.

  • maaaannnn u will make us buy again a psp to get this new version …….. anyway for sure i need to buy my ps3 first and for sure i will buy this new model of psp she come in september right ?? Keep up the good work this first day of E3 start like crazy and like u said best are to come i cant wait to see the 2 next day :)

  • Jason – I agree with your comments from a business standpoint. It does make sense not to piss developers off who have been behind the original PSP despite the fact that games aren’t really selling at a million plus level….

…but at this stage of the game with the DS doing the kind of business that it’s doing, why not take a little risk? I’m actually an owner of a 1st gen PSP — if anybody would be upset, (in addition to loyal developers) it should be first gen PSP owners. And here we are saying, “please — add the damn analog stick and hard drive/Memory stick so that I can play first person shooters the way they were meant to be played. Hell, make an attachment that clips on to it. *Something.* It’s a shame to see a game like Ratchet and Clank look so incredible and get reviews that say, “This game is great despite the fact that the controls are more difficult that they should be.”

I guess it’s just frustrating to look at the screen on this thing (even in the first gen incarnation) and how it BLOWS AWAY any other mobile device I have (this includes a 60 Gig iPod, an iPhone and my Nokia 770), but would it be so much better if I had a damn right analog stick. As it is, I went and invested in an 8GB memory stick. Clearly I’m a fan. Let’s just be honest with ourselves here — if we love Sony, we need to be STRAIGHT with the company. Not pat it on the back and smile when clearly there’s still (possibly) time to make this thing right!

  • you guys have to win best at show at ign! you did amazing Jack!

but heres what i was disappointed about!

no open home beta yet,no 2.0 update,

NO NEW JAK AND DAXTER!!!! CMON! THIS WAS THE 1ST PS2 GAME I’VE EVER OWNED BRING IT TO PS3!!!

also you crushed peter moores ass with your announcements

    360 is over in 2008!!!!

  • Lets have some instant messaging soon sony.

  • Im a long time fan of PS ever since PS1 like most of us. I still have yet to gey my PS3. I do have to admitt I was feelling worried that the PS3 wasn’t going to be around long, however after todays events and I’m sure many more great things to see at E3, I am hands down completly convinced that PS3 will come out on top, and I am again very excited to get one!

  • Anyword on Final Fantasy 13 at E3!!

  • I also am excied for HOME, though I really wanna see some more stuff on the TROPHEY ROOM. I love getting achivements on my 360, and I know I’ll love getting trophes on my PS3

  • where are my demoes jack? am i going to have to break a leg. lol

  • Frist of all, great conference at E3. I really enjoyed it.

Seceond. I love the Star Wars PSP. Although, I wish it also came in black, but the white is cool too. I’m definitely going to get one. Video output for the PSP is the best thing since chips. Keep up the good work.

  • Jack you did a great job at the conference. You guys won E3 no doubt about that

  • Congratulations, Jack. You did a great job!! You made us PS3 owners proud!

  • Magnificent showing at E3! I was completely blown away. All I want now is a Heavenly Sword demo please, thank you.

  • OK!

First I will be upgrading my PSP to the PSP Slim (black) got to have the A/V out.

E3 was a joke this year with the exception of SONY. I watched all three of the press releases: MICROSOFT got some laughs yet NO APPLAUSE, not even for Halo 3. Thank you NINTENDO for the great success growing the market and industry, yet I won’t be spending much money with you this time around except for my wife’s small DS habit.

@ SONY, with the increase in PS3 sales after the price drop I feel better about the state of the install base.

The show you guys put on was the best by far. The game line up is astounding, as are the plans for HOME and the games coming to the PSN. I am really looking at Echochrome, simple but not simple.

When Kojima took the stage I about fell out. The NCSOFT announcement was great, let’s see what they can do. Unreal III as a PS3 exclusive from Epic Games?!? WOW! How did you guys pull that one off? Can we say Slap in the face? And working that closely with the Unreal Engine can only bring good things.

    Killzone 2. Enough said!

I think the crowd’s reaction to every thing said at Sony’s event says it all. The press actually clapped and cheered.

A well deserved congratulation is in order.

Sony is KING! Sony is KING!

P.S. Microsoft actually had to nerve to try to take the credit for last gens Madden and GTA success. I know they did not directly say it but to anyone who doesn’t know any better that is how it came across.

  • Jack ….

    Nice burn on Kaz.

What are you playing? RRRRRRRRRRRRidge Racer? hahahahaha Great stuff.

You did a good job for a first timer.

I’m waiting to see more information about some RPGs!

    RPGs please Jack!

  • GREAT JOB JACK! SONY IS REALLY LOOKING SWEET. I CANNOT WAIT TO GET PS3 HOME ON MY SYSTEM IT LOOKS GREAT. THAT IS WHAT NEXT GEN IS ALL ABOUT. THANK YOU.

  • The trailers on the PSN today are great. I will be puting them to good use. Mabey just one first party demo?

  • Lets drop the FFXIII bomb at the TGS and where is Afrika.

    GPS for PSP?

  • I heard the Sony Press Conference was to be on PSN. So I want to know is that still planned. I would like to download that. So if it is to come out will it be on Thursday. Plus any chance of the Demos at E3.

  • After watching the E3 feed over at G4 and getting in a fair amount of discussion I can’t help but wonder a few things.

The PSP slim is going to have TV out, is this something exclusive to that model or will the original PSP owners be able to buy a cable to do this with?

The PSN has yet to reach PSP owners, will it be untethered from it’s PS3 leash or will those owners who don’t own a PS3 continue to look at it as an overpriced peripheral for the PSP?

I’m sure you have many surprises left, I hoped a PSP redesign wouldn’t hit this year but seeing as it is a portable it makes a fair amount of sense. Especially when you consider that this will be the first time some new colors hit the US.

Still, I can’t help but feel that the entire presentation was really about the PS3, just like this blog has been.
I understand putting your flagship in the spotlight but after the scant news here I’ve felt like you don’t take our comments seriously here and that on the G.A.P. it is just about creating a society that is a test ground for Home for the PS3.

Ah well, can’t get everything in life but I can hope for a bit more feedback and a little more information ahead of time.

  • Excellent job at E3 this year, Sony. Quite frankly, the PS3 was a running joke after last year (I still planned on buying it. Been a Sony fan since the early days of the first Playstation as a wee lad.), and you really pulled a 180 after E3 ’06. Soon we were at E3 ’07, and you guys c-l-e-a-n-e-d u-p. You were the most impressive show in my opinion, with Nintendo at a close second, and MS trailing big time (I expected better from them, really. While I was more concerned with Sony news, I wanted to see what some of my friends would be playing on their 360’s come next year. Surprise, it’s Halo and a bunch of games I’ll also be playing.). You guys really impressed me, and I am glad I got my console when I did. This crazy spike in PS3 sales as a result of your business actions is going to be really good for you and for us.

In short, great job this year. I would not expect anything less from you guys.

  • I was a little disappointed that the PSP redesign didn’t include some flash memory.. but a 4gb card isn’t so expensive…

  • congrats on having the best E3 this year… you all pulled out the stops and as such deserve recognition for that…

the only disappointing thing i’ve seen thus far is no built in camera type function and speaker function for the new psp… otherwise great job…

also we know now that MGS4 is exclusive to the PS3… what about FFXIII… you need that as an exclusive… if not than i predict a hard road ahead… please get FFXIII as a PS3 exclusive… you guys need it and i want it…

  • I was overall impressed. Jack, you did great up there. A little nervous but you came off humble and you came off likeable above all else… Unlike Peter moore and Reggie for the competition side of thing.

I was most upset about 2 things… No rumble shown and the biggest… No Eight Days… This and Uncharted are really the 2 biggest reasons I bought my Ps3 other than Insomniac. Where the heck is EightdayS!!!!!!!!!???

  • I forgot to mention one reason why I know the PSP Slim can’t replace my current PSP.

I often find myself using TyDoPad, PSP-PDA and iR Shell for functional purposes to enjoy my PSP.
I take notes while in class. I make verbal notes using my SOCOM headset and the remote or record a class just to hear it again later.
I edit the names of my files, move demos up and down in the game’s listing on my PSP without having to remove them and re-add them.

What I’m trying to say is this, there is a large audiance you’ve been neglecting and homebrew has been the only way to fill that void.
Out of the box I can’t use almost any IM service, through a web portal I can get watered down versions.
Without homebrew I can’t read most text files since the PSP only supports htm, html & txt file extensions and even then only through the web browser so I lose where I am in my books if I don’t make a physical note outside of the web browser.

By now I’m sure you’ve gotten the point. That programs such as PSPoste have no illegal uses or even questionable uses and with these you could give or even sell these functions to PSP owners so that they can also keep their PSP with them and use it as a PDA or even a pocketable laptop while on the go.

WIth everything I get out of my PSP I look at the potential of the community to do illegal things versus what is commonly used. What I see is often that there is a large enough chunk of your audiance that would like to be able to use their PSP for more then entertainment, for real functionality and as a extremely versatile learning tool.

You could learn a lot from the homebrew community but I am less concerned with that, what I was hoping would happen by now is that you would expand your market and make the PSP useful for educational uses.

I know at a point you looked into breaking into the educational market, if you take the chances all you have to lose is R&D time and the cash spent on it. Your comsumers will enjoy those functions regardless of how shoddy or poorly supported they are simply because we use the device and want more because it is capable of it.

I thank you for the mention in the past, it reasures me that you will read this and I hope you consider taking the PSP in this direction since it wouldn’t take many resources to make these features into downloadable eboots to expand our PSP’s with, not to mention making a PSP keyboard would add a new dimension to the PSP’s approach to the portable multimedia device market.

  • I’m feeling so much better about having waited 8.5 hours for a PS3 last November. Fantastic conference today.

  • I heard word of a new PSP design on the way that would improve the issues I had with the original design (Battery/speed). I am glad to see since GDC Sony starting to warm up to the community, in return I will be picking up a new PSP this fall.

  • Hey Jack.

I wish I could see all of the things you presented at E3 on video, instead of web pages on dialup. From what I heard, I think this year will be great for all of those working at SCEA.
I know that you had a lot of things to do this past month that you presented at E3, but can you post here a little more. It’s cool, for lack of better words, to see you post here.

I plan on getting a PS3 tomorrow, so now I can finally experience it for myself.

  • Mr. Tretton,

Very nice job at the conference today. Although we all could tell you were nervous, you did an amazing job, you really, “brought it Home”…haha.

The new PSP was a great announcement, and Killzone looks to be on track to be the benchmark FPS.

The only thing that i would like you to clear up for me, is if Haze is in fact a PS3 exclusive, or timed. Look forward to your response, and more news! Way to take charge this year at E3.

  • Very nice job Mr. Tretton!!!

  • will the conference be on the ps store? i watched it and it was great and all but it would even better in HD.

  • @ 177

I could not agree with you more.

  • Jack,

I have to say that I am impressed with Sony’s E3 Press event. I watched it Live and was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I was not disappointed at all. Now, this makes me feel even better then before for buying a PS3 and a PSP. Thanks for the blog, keep up the good work and keep us up to date with what ever you can!!!

  • Mr. Tretton,

    – What’s SCE intentions to in regards to a PSP/PS3 movie/music subscription/purchase download service?
    (and Sony CONNECT?)

    – What about Skype, IM and E-mail on the PSP?

    – How was the XMB GUI running on the Sony Ericsson 880i?

    – Why wasn’t Wi-fi upgraded to G and/or Draft-N or Bluetooth added to the PSP Rev 2?

  • so does the new black psp(not the star wars or the ice white one) cost $169.99 like the current one? Or perhaps cheaper since it’s smaller???

  • Hats off to Sony…a job well done. Through all the forums on all the site most people seem to agree on onething. That Sony had the best conference. It was nice to hear that the UT3 and Haze are timed exclusives .Honestly full exclusive would have been nicer but exclusive content along with early release would be good enough. At least for Haze as UT 3 already has exclusive stuff ( Mods , maps etc) not available on the 360. Thx for keeping MGS 4 Exclusive. Would have been nice if the rumble axis was anounced hopefully for an Early. ( i have many friends waiting for that ).

PS- Killzone 2 was amazing would be nice to see it improve over time (some textures … very minor stuff )

  • Great job! I was able to brag you all up to my friends/foes! Thank you!

  • Dont forget to make a new blog post about the 3200% PS3 sales increase on amazon!!!!!

  • yeahhh sony won :)

  • thanks Jack Tretton

  • Awesome work Sony :)

  • Así será el rediseño de PSP

    […] Vía | PlayStation.Blog […]

  • what about the new controller with rumble?

  • Damn, there’s so much stuffi forgot about in your show. Home looks sweat, that may take a lot of peoples lifes away from them… nevermind tho.

What was the name of the puzzle game the japan stutios is making. That was one of the best things ive seen in ages. Really amazing stuff.

Finding out if FF13 is PS3 exclusive would be nice, i own a 360 as well as a ps3 but im used to FF’s only appearing on sony consoles. Come on sony get it sorted. After last night i think your garenteed an increase in sales… Tell/show Sqaure that, might stop them from doing something a little silly. :)

  • Nice E3! You had the best, Nintendo was all figures and stuff money users etc… Xbox was boring also a lot of crap talk. But yours had balance talk:games were like 1:3 Very nice!

  • Sony had a great showing this E3, I am sure pretty much everyone wil agree except mainstream media who will think that Wii Fit was great….

But there are still some videos I would like to see on PSN and at least one demo would haven been nice.

  • Personally i loved wii Fit as long as they give it depth instead of marketing it to the casual person who isn’t too interested and just wants a light work out.

PS3 conference showed off pretty much what i want to hear, thanks, Heavenly word, MGS and of course the agreements with NCsoft and Epic. Can’t wait to see what comes of NC agreement, Guild Wars PS3 please
