We’re Just Getting Started…

New Sony PSP
What a week! E3 is always an exciting time of year when we can roll up our sleeves and finally show you what we have planned for the year and beyond. As I’m sure you saw, on Monday we announced we are expanding the purchase options for PS3 by adding a new PS3 model to the market in August with an 80GB HDD. We also were able to engineer some cost savings into hardware production of PS3 and lowered the purchase price of our 60GB model by $100, effective immediately. We feel that is a substantial price reduction and hope if you haven’t purchased a PS3 yet, it will encourage you to do so. You probably also heard that we introduced a new, sleeker PSP; new features for our PlayStation Home service; and, as promised: games, games and more games.

This holiday and fiscal year more than 400 games are coming to PlayStation fans in North America. There will be over 120 PS3 titles including what we’re showing here at E3: Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, The Eye of Judgment, PAIN, Echochrome, SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals Confrontation, SingStar and many more. All of those are exclusive to the PS3, and those are the ones just from us. We also showed at our press conference today other exclusives from our third party partners, like Haze, Unreal Tournament 3 and the one you have been commenting so much about on this very blog, Metal Gear Solid 4.

In addition, the PSP will score more than 140 games and PS2 over 160 this year. And, if you didn’t get a chance to see the new Star Wars Battlefront PSP Entertainment Pack, be sure to check out the pictures I’ve included here with this post. The Darth Vader image on the back of the new white PSP is pretty cool, in my opinion.

Our goal right now is simple: to provide you with the most compelling gaming experience possible, and as we are showing here this week, we are well on the way to achieving that goal.

Right now is a good time to reflect and say thank you. Thank you for being passionate members of the video game community and part of the PlayStation family. The best is yet to come.

  • @ what0080 Don’t worry that is exactly what they are doing. From the news I read I am not a very Happy customer at all. The news I read says that Sony is going to let the 60GB PS3’s sell out and at the end of July discontinue them entirely. Now you think great that means the 80GB will go down to $499.99. WRONG the 80GB will replace the 60GB & remain at $599.99 it will not have the EE (Emotion Engine) in it and of course will have an extra 20GB of space and Motorstorm. Well Sony if those are your plans then you Offically lost your mind and a Customer. Consumers like choice not to be forced to buy packs. If I want Motorstorm I will buy it seperatly. If I want a bigger HD I will replace it myself. I don’t want to be forced to buy a PS3 with a game at the same price. Don’t you wonder why PS3’s are selling out at $499.99 it is because that is the price people are willing to pay for a piece of equipment that is for ENTERTAINMENT. I am not willing to every pay more than $499.99 for a Machine that will be used for Entertainment. If you do this you will end up in the same place you were before I PROMISE you this. What Consumers want is a 60GB PS3 at $499.99 that has the Emotion Engine in it and the Rumble Controller. Consumers want realiabilty that there system will work 100% with what ever it is said it will do espically Backwards Compatibility. For $499.99 or $599.99 it better work 100% from the minute I plug it in. That is how people think. It doesn’t matter how many controllers or games you pack in people don’t want that and won’t buy it. I was hoping for the best and that you finally understood and would succeed but if this is true unfortunatly you will fail. When & if this occurs I plan to show you with my Wallet as I did before and might even consider buying a 360. Do the right thing and keep the 60GB going for $499.99 with the EE and add the Vibration Controller and you will continue to succeed. I hope what I read is wrong but for the doubters here is the link.

  • I will also voice my displeasure with this news. Even though I already own a PS3, this is a horrible “deal” for future PS3 owners. If Sony goes through with this plan, they will continue seeing sales of less than 100k units a month in the US. You can’t be the leader of the console market when you are constantly being outsold by the competition.

  • IF the price cut is a scam (which it appears to be) and the emotion engine is being cut out (which it appears to be), it looks like I’m going to waiting for MGS 4 to come out on Xbox 360.

Don’t screw us over Jack…….we’re warning you.

  • It would be a dreadful idea to discontinue the current 60GB SKU in favour of the $599 80GB. The biggest selling point for the PS3 right now, is the recent price reduction on the 60GB. I have -no idea- why Sony would even begin to consider removing that advantage!

I was also extremely disappointed that they did not announce a similar price reduction for the European market. I’ve purchased a PS3 in the UK myself already, but it seems extremely unfair to have given us the LOWER value product for over $400 more than what the USA pay!

  • I seriously hope that this “news” is just a precursor to the news of a price cut for the 80GB model once the 60gb models sell out.

  • Sony,

People want a $400 dollar 60GB much, much more than $500 or $600 dollar 80GB.

60GB is more than enough space. Dont ruin all the good you did early this week with something like this. You are already making 60GB without the PS2 chips so why not continue?

Sales of PS3s have increased because the price has gone down not because people want more GBs.

  • This is really messed up if that is what they do.

  • Whether there’s a price cut or not, I will *not* be buying a PS3 that has software run backwards compatibility.

The price cut scam is just salt in the wound.

  • Bring back the 20GB model and replace it with the best price per GB hard drive you can find. Scrap the EE even. Getting the price and size of the PS3 down permanently should be your primary objective. If Sony can’t get the price of the PS3 down to around $450 PERMANENTLY by Christmas it will be a catastrophic failure. NO TEN YEARS JACK

  • Get the price of the PS3 down to around $450 for your console to win the war. The price cut is a good start but just need to be shorten to the amount above. Also get World of Warcraft for The system. It boost sale for the PS3 just because how popular the WoW is. Just like Final Fantasy 11 for the PS2.

  • How about someone at Sony confirming publicly that the 60 GB PS3 is being phased out completely in America?

    http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/13/sony-switcheroo-no-more-60gb-playstation-3-in-us-after-july/

Is it true the “price drop” is just to move left over 60 GB inventory and instead to force the 80 GB model, with crappy software emulation, onto the US game buying public?

So the positive buzz has a negative spin. Congratulations on taking one step forward and two back.

  • @309.
even though I agree with your statement that the “fake” or temporary pricecut suck.. Do you plan on getting a 360 then? Because that also uses software for backwards compatibility. It really is not that bad.Not the best, but not bad at all

  • What is Jack’s opinion on this issue? Please confirm/verify what is going on here Jack….please. Don’t make me lose faith in the playstation brand.

  • Price cut? what price cut. Sony need to sort themselves out and quick. At this rate all they are going to be remembered for is killing the Playstation brand.

  • To quote Jack from his post above:
“on Monday we announced we are expanding the purchase options for PS3 by adding a new PS3 model to the market in August with an 80GB HDD. We also were able to engineer some cost savings into hardware production of PS3 and lowered the purchase price of our 60GB model by $100, effective immediately. We feel that is a substantial price reduction and hope if you haven’t purchased a PS3 yet, it will encourage you to do so.”

The way I read it, there are two SKUs and there is a price cut. If there are statements to the contrary made by other Sony employees, it means that Sony is wilfully misleading customers which is a breach of faith. I hope this aint true. Or soon, PS brand will lose one another fan (of thousands who abandoned the brand in disgust today).

  • I don’t get it why so many ppl complain about the software emulation…
I’m from europe we never had this EE chip in any ps3 so stop crying girls :P
if u want a ps3 with that EE chip just go out an get one for 499$ :P

  • It seems that sony’s price cut is temporary, and this is just going to kill the buzz from E3 big mistake to tell people they are going to keep paying 600 for the 80 gig, great value yes. but sales will drop like crazy when you do that. I have one and im glad sales are up right now but you are setting your selves up again with this decision.

  • Mr Jack Tretton, I am an avid SONY PlayStation fan. I buy a TON of SONY products, including HDTVs, Cameras, PSOne, PS2, PS3, PSP etc… and I LOVE how you did your E3 this year showing some heart towards your customers, showing us we actually have some great looking games coming soon. Showing us you have a fun side to you and not just business thinking side. I truly enjoyed E3 SONY PC and I am proud again to be a PS3 owner.

KILLZONE 2 looks unbelievable and I cannot wait to get it!! THANK YOU FOR SHOWING US MORE FOOTAGE! I was beginning to worry that KZ2 may just disappear.

The games were great. The new PSP with VIDEO output is definately awesome and I cant wait to get that to replace my old model PSP.

The EXCLUSIVE MGS4 was good to hear! (although I want to know, among EVERYONE else, HOW LONG IS MGS4 going to be exclusive!) and what about our beloved Final Fantasy series?

If you need to cut off a body part to get us back KATAMARI DAMACY (aka Beautiful Katamari) I would be VERY HAPPY! DO WHATEVER IT TAKES PLEASE!!

Also, PLEASE listen to us… the trailers of games are cool and movie trailers are ok also, but WE WANT DEMOS!! We want to PLAY the DEMOs more than anything! PLEASE give us some love for buying the PS3 and give us some playable E3 Demos. Just one would be sufficient to show your at least trying to give us more than just videos.

The hidden easter eggs were fun to look for in the PSN Store, thanks for that! ^^

Also, Where is out RUMBLE Controller!? We WANT it back! Please help us Mr Tretton! Let us know where it is… and when its coming.

Mr Tretton, what happened to The Getaway for PS3? Thats one of my favorite SONY games and I want to know if there is a sequel in the works. And about AFRIKA, what happened to it?

    In-Game XMB….when?

One LAST thing Mr Tretton. What makes me comfortable being a PS3 owner is KNOWING for a FACT that PS3 will be on top with all its normal fanbase intact. I want all my old PS2 buddies back into PS3. Now the news about SONY dropping the PS3 price was GREAT! All my PS2 buddies finally want a PS3, but they need to save for it. Then I read the news about the 60GB Model being killed off and that the price WONT STAY at $499.99 WHAT!?? Just as soon as people WANT to buy the expensive console you guys tell them to buy it now or be screwed by the outrageous price tag of $600 again?

SONY, Please for the love of god keep the price tag at $499.99 so the PS3 can start getting more sales and I can have confidence in the company name (PlayStation) again! If you guys jump the price tag back to $600 were screwed. I’m tired of worrying about the PS3s future. Aren’t you?

FACT: Not many care for an 80GB model.

FACT: PS3 is actually selling good for once since launch at a $499 price tag

FACT: Cutting the EE chips will hurt sales because people like me WANT 100% BC on all my 100+ PS2 and PSone games! I bought a PS3 just to play my PS1 and PS2 games on using HDMI and I knew it was near 100% perfect playback. I would be PISSED OFF if it was like 360s (Software) and so would MANY other here in the states.

FACT: SONY can dominate this console era, but NOT with ONLY 1 unit for sale at $600!! 3DO couldn’t do it, SNK couldn’t really do it, Pioneer LaserActive couldn’t do it either. And if you guys think you can just because your name is SONY, think again. Die hard fans like me bought the PS3 for $600 just to have one. MOST people WILL NOT DO THAT however.

Please listen to your fans Mr Tretton, DO NOT KILL OFF THE 60GB CONSOLE! DO NOT KILL THE EE CHIPS EITHER! Keep us happy and we will continue to support you. We really hope that you guys can win this new generation. Keeping the price cut to $499 almost can guarantee us a victory. That and damn fine exclusive releases.

Thank you Mr Tretton for being a great rep for SONY and I HOPE to hear more from you regarding this.

Someone just needs to wipe the slate clean from David Reeves, Kaz, Jack, all the way up to Stringer. You all look sound and act like incompetent fools.

  • I forgot I would also like to see a FULL High Definition Video on the PS Store of the Entire SONY PC for 2007. This would be icing on the cake as Gamespots isn’t that great. In fact Gamespots coverage that they let you download of the SONY E3 PC is less than half the quality of the other two companys… Please give us PS3 users the best HD version of the entire PC that you guys can muster up. I among many other would be grateful.

  • Good job Jack for the E3 Press Conference!

80GB PS3 is a great bundle with a good game, Motorstorm. I want this to come to the Europe. And I want to see a price drop for Europe, Jack. (Don’t ignore the Europe)

I’m not happy with software emulation in EU PS3s because PS2 games looks awful on it! Full of jaggies and blurs. Can this be fixed in PS3 firmware update to make PS2 games to look like “PS2 console quality” in PS3?

By the way, I’m 100% love and happy with my PS3! Need to improve the B/C though.

    Xbox 360 sucks! :)

  • sweet!!!!

  • I’m 100% Playstation fanboy!

Keep up the good work with Playstation Company!! :D

  • I am confused by the PS3 price point. Are you really setting the high-end PS3 to 600 dollars AGAIN? I worry that consumer perception will still target the PS3 as costing 600 dollars, and much of the gain your would have gotten from the PS3 price cut will have been lost. Having only a 60 GB model at 499, then in august announcing an 80 gb model at 599 w/ game would have been far more effective at slaking consumer demand…

  • Yes osirisomeomi after the 60GB stock runs out they’ll be right back up there with a $599 pricetag. This comes straight from Kaz’s mouth.

  • Man I hope Haze is only for PS3…………if it’s PS3 im sold i’ll get it on day 1………..dont let it go sony

  • First of all I loved your E3 Presentation

Though I thought the new psp features were a little dry an HDD was what I was really Hoping for. So I don’t always have to worry about how much of my space is left (I like to use my psp as a Sony ipod). Maybe I was wrong but it didn’t seem like much innovation.

I WOULD LOVE LOVE LOVE if Sony could custom make a ps3 HDD for MAX STORAGE my ps3 (60) is 75% FULL and im getting worried that ill run out of space. I know you can buy your own at a computer store but they’re so hard to find the specific type drive and then there only small storage improvements. IF SONY COULD MAKE A SMALL LINE OF PS3 HDD SAY 80 120 160 AND 200 (if possible) IT WOULD BE AMAZING THE POSSIBILITIES. No worries about buying games on the ps network or wether to put a CD on the ps3 or just play it from a disk (a real hassle) and I don’t even want to think how much space network games like warhawk take up. Don’t worry Im not going to threaten you that Im going to get an xbox I know playstations the best. Just some advice to help you teach other people that and make your current and future owners happy THANK YOU VERY MUCH PLEASE CONSIDER THIS (plus maybe in the future come out with a bigger HDD instead of a whole new system with bigger HDD.) AGAIN THANK YOU FOR AWSOME PRODUCTS.

  • Any news to come regarding the rumoured Bioware PS3 title?

Yeah there isn’t one. It was what it was a rumor.

” Do you read? W.O.W. will ever come to consoles Blizzard doesn’t care about the console market there are PC only.

  • Good job Jack for the E3 Press Conference!

80GB PS3 is a great bundle with a good game, Motorstorm. I want this to come to the Europe. And I want to see a price drop for Europe, Jack. (Don’t ignore the Europe)

    Xbox 360 sucks!

Fix the jaggys on PS2 games LMAO thats what the PS2 games look like lol you moron. Another idoit Fanboy games make the console kid not the other way around. If you love to play games you would be so stupied and bias and the sametime lol.

FANBOYISM OF ANY KIND IS COMPLETELY RETARTED.

  • Hi there!

I would like to talk a bit about Europe… I hope this blog is a good place to do so and that this message will be read.

I actually live in France and many people on boards here feel Europe being neglected when it comes to price or delays.
US and Canada have had a 100$ price cut… and here we should be happy with a 600€ “bargain”? Do you realise what 600€ is for many of us gamers? Besides, i don’t care for Motorstorm and a 2nd controller without rumble.

I’ve been reading an interview with David REEVES, SCEE’s president, published in Gameindustry.biz. Geez!
“(…) but surprisingly, people are paying that amount of money for it. Now they’ll get two games and an extra controller as well”, he said.
He should be happy that some people remains loyal and still support Sony at THAT price! He should also be thankfull to the design flaw and high hardware failure of the X360. If not, some people would’ve had given up waiting for a nicer price…
With all these games delayed, lost exclusives and inferior versions, you know, you really need faith when it cost 600€.

And there again, in the same interview, some lame PR:
“(…) PlayStation 3, you will see, will be far and away the winner when you look at it by March ’08.”
Don’t forget! In Internet days this kind of words spread through boards & blogs and may upset a lot of people… Plus, i’ve read this interview and i don’t understand anymore what’s going on with the new SKU.

On a positive front, i think that this E3 was great for you:
    First that price cut.
Then you needed to put an end to that CGI-trailer story and it was well done.
You needed to show that awesome games were headed to the PS3 and you did it.

I’ve missed though some japanese games like “White Knight Story” and the PS3 game of the ICO Team.
I’m also a bit worried by the gameplay of “Heavenly Sword”. It’s a masterpiece and i hope it’ll be fixed.

Thank you for this place and your time.

  • New PSP? Thinner, lighter, video-out and faster game loads? I am so glad that I sold my original PSP before the announcement!!! Resale value of those puppies is going to drop like a rock. It’s a shame, however, that the UMD is still intact; an integrated flash-based hdd would have been a welcome update.

  • Great job Sony ..you owned the E3 this year …respect voor the guys from Guerrila they pulled it of big time…and Hideo Kojima is a GOD

    MGS 4 for PS3 only HELL YEAH…eat that Konami……

  • I can’t wait for TV-out on the PSP!

  • I think yall should update the psp flash player. Also send me my god of war demo i’ve been waiting on since like 4 months ago,and i think it should be a psp home like the ps3 has . But besides that keep up the good work.

  • im a big playstation fan and love what there doing with the new ps3 & psp im going 2 get the 2 new versions when they come out and i love the exclusive games they have …but playstation needs more exclusives so they can catch up witch the others ( and i want them 2 so bad!) …..and i just don’t understand why playstation won’t buy out or (bribe) game company’s to make more or all exclusives for the playstation 3 and psp?……i just don’t get it because they need it!

  • I’m an Older GenYer (1980) and an avid Playstation Hardware owner since day one many years ago. Well, now that I’m doing the adult thing and have a wife and son taking up most of my home life, how will the new games for the PS3 help me incorporate them into my electronic world? There’s no need to market and advertise to me SCEA, you had me at Tekken 1; it’s my wife you must convience or somehow get her to enjoy electronic entertainment. I don’t live with my mother, I have a high level corporate job, I’ve fought in a war as an officer, I’m going for my PhD in Business, I’m married with a child and one on the way, and yet I’m still a gamer…so how does my family benifit from that? Maybe I’m explaining things the wrong way so a little help would be great. Maybe the new PSP will have more kids movies available for my son or perhaps cosmotology tips and continuing education for my wife to watch while at work. Please help me find some way to incorporate my family and my gaming side to live in harmony!:)

  • Gamespot has a story where Kaz Hirai confirms the 60gb is out of production.

The “price drop” is a bait and switch.

    Way to go Sony!

You just *guaranteed* yourself an Xbox 360 sale!

Nice job Jack, in turning one of your most avid Sony fans against you!

Can’t wait for MGS 4 on the 360!

  • Incredible job at E3! You stole the show and ran with it! I especcially loved the use of Home within your conference– your virtual selves were great! I also love the new revamped Home square. Excellent stuff.

I’ll have to definently get a PSP now (I thought you might announce an updated one, so I had to wait) and my PS3 is definently going to be doing a lot of gaming later this year. Loving the line up, keep it going and make sure Killzone 2 blows us away when you get it out! I was astounded with how it looked!

Anyway, great job, definently the most exciting conference!

  • Congratulations on bringing a fantastic new attitude and taking the show at E3 this year.

I love to see the industry thrive, and I love to see SCE helping to lead the way in innovation. I’ve been with you guys from the days of the original Playstation, and dont plan on changing that.

However, in the interest of maintaining the integrity of this blog, i would like to see a post apologizing to us the consumers for the posting of misleading information regarding the 60GB model of the PS3. It may not have been a direct lie, but it seemed engineered to hide what was coming from us.

We trust this blog to deliver accurate information, as it happens, directly from the people running the show. Im sure a lot of people would be extremely satisfied with a mere apology, showing that you guys can admit when you make a mistake.

You guys impressed us with a new customer-oriented attitude at E3, now I’m hoping you can do the same here.

    Thanks in advance

  • Regarding Metal Gear Solid 4 for PS3:

Honestly don’t hold your breath that it’s going to be a PS3 exclusive – Sony may wish it was and talk as if it is, but producing video games is a business and I’m pretty sure Konami will wish to recoup it’s development costs (my guess it’s probably in excess of £5-8 million) however it can, as well as maximize potential sales. I’ll agree that they probably wish it remains a PS3 exclusive (the franchise has got a long history with Sony) but the simple economic fact is that they’re not in business to appease Sony ‘fanboys’ (God I hate that word) but they are in the business of making $/£/yen. The simple fact is that there are far more 360’s out there than PS3’s – regardless of how much the week on week sales of PS3 are improving.

My gut feeling is that it’ll appear first on PS3 (mainly because that’s been the lead development platform) but I fully expect that’ll we’ll see a 360 version within 3-5 months of the PS3 release – probably with additional content as well (remember Resident Evil 4 for PS2?)

I’m not saying this because I’m feeling spiteful or that I’ve just purchased a 360 (mainly due to the lack of UK price cut – see previous post no. 301) At the end of the day I’ve been into video games for well over 25 years regardless of format (I own and even occasionally still play a vectrex, pcengine, colleco vision, Atari vcs, dreamcast, snes, N64, megadrive, gamecube, ps1, ps2, numerous jamma boards + supergun, DSlite, Wii and now a 360 ) I used to hate the division between Spectrum and C64 owners – saying their console was the best. I’m saying this because I have an understanding of how video companies work….I’m not being ‘full of myself’ I’m just making an informed and honest opinion.

It’s simply a question of economics – who ever thought that you’d be playing Sega games on a Nintendo console?!

I appreciate and fully understand ‘brand loyalty’ – it’s a good thing, the holy grail of business…..but just don’t assume that what has happened in the past will relate to the present or even future….that’s called being naïve.

Anyway, guess time will tell – maybe ‘Paddy Power’ should open up bets as to whether MGS4 will go multiplatform rather than how much of a PS3 price cut will appear in the UK….we’ll see.

  • where can you start to buy it?**package…
    and how much???

I heard about this like 2 weeks ago..

  • i have the PSone the box and PSone and PS2 and ps3 every gig version and the black psp, white psp, pink psp..and soon the thin psp!!!! with the camera/psp and gps/psp

  • Eightdays, Jack…. Where’s my eight Days!!!!??? That’s the one game I was really hoping to see this year and it wasn’t anywhere to be seen. The Getaway neither… Any word on these games? Don’t tell me they’re pulled… Eightdays is the reason I bought the Ps3, other than Naughtydogs andInsomniacs stuff. Afrika too, where the heck is that one? I know you said you’re just gettin’ started and all, and that’s cool, but these games really stood out when shown and now they’re nowhere to be seen.

  • Wow! VozrotH is very retarded, warning!

  • Good job Jack, You and Peter Moore did an awesome job and really got me excited for Unreal Tournament 3(UT3)and its mods.

Perhaps one day Sony can sponsor real tournaments for UT3 such as clan wars for mod creations.

Speaking of which you guys should off alot of tournaments, with prizes for certain games. This move might even get people to buy downloadable content just to compete in these.

    Awesome job again Jack.

  • Thanks Jack and all of the people from Sony. I trust in you guys which is why I bought my ps3. I have faith that you guys will deliver on what you said. I also love this blog that you guys have done. I think it’s a great idea to garner feedback from the community. Some things I would like is more demos for psn. Some other features would be nice to.

You’ve shown the games now it’s time to get back to work and help the psn more and more. I love Home and can’t wait to try it out.

  • Thanks for leading us into the HD age. Great showing at E3, regardless of what G4 TV has to say. Socom will fill the void that I long for with the PS3.

A couple of suggestions would be, hearing my music while in game, maybe some Avi playback. Possibly some software to help guitarists record via PS3.

The media server has opened up Terrabyte+ music collection to True Dolby, and for that I am truly thankful.

It seems that Microsoft would like to censor and monopolize everything, thanks for having the guts to return to the throne of adult gaming.

This old gamer can’t wait for the new titles, I have purchased every game possible, even though some are ports it won’t stop me.

  • Mr. Trenton I applaud you; your tenacity is admirable. I am comfortable in my decision to purchase a PS3 and PSP entertainment system this holiday season. My reason? I look back on what games were released on the launch of the XBOX 360 and now almost two years later it has developed a much more impressive selection. So if games are what the PS3 is lacking then what will happen in a year? Two years? What games will come to the table that only time can unvail? I await this answer with confidence. Oh and the price cut will deffinatley help the situation, 100$ is enormous for me.

  • Good job, but don’t lag out on Socom if you know what I mean…
