Another E3 Winding Down, Plus a Quick Clarification

556 1

Well, we’re in the home stretch! A new format for E3 brought a new look and feel, a few challenges and most importantly a great opportunity to show off our wares for all PlayStation platforms. All the planning, preparations and hard work has paid off into what was a great E3 for SCEA. Congratulations to everyone involved in making that happen! And a thanks to all of you guys for your positive comments regarding the press conference and what we showed there. I know Jack was checking out all the comments on his post and really appreciated your feedback. I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing our games via the trailers on PlayStation Network. I just wanted to also let you know that yes, we hear you, and we are working to make those great games you saw into more interactive content and demos.

One quick thing before I head to the show for the last day. I just wanted to clarify something. I’ve seen a lot of posts this morning related to the 60GB SKU and the comments by SCEE President David Reeves. As we announced this week, SCEA’s product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of consumers for the foreseeable future.

Talk to you again soon, once we get back from Santa Monica.

  • Good news. Thanks for posting this.

  • Thanks for clarifying that buddy…. Finally!

  • Still doesn’t state that it isn’t an inventory clear out?

  • No clarification on europe, no information on whether they’re dropping the 60GB

  • I can’t wait till those great games are out.
and echochrome looks like it’ll be much fun

  • Sounds like it’s been cleared up.

Now, for everyone that jumped to their own conclusion and drug Sony through the mud in the previous thread, go apologize to your PS3 and hug it ; )

  • Thank you so much for clear this out, again thanks.

  • @dagast2

Thats funny! Sony now saw who were their true loyal customers….

  • Exactly – stating that you have “Ample supplies” is well known anyway due to the lower than expected sales – but that doesn’t mean you are not dropping the 60gb version and no denial kind of signals it is happening.

Also why such a large price difference between the 60 and 80 when even Reeves himself says there is only a few cents difference between hard-drive models?

and finally – why is Europe still being screwed over on price? If dropping the price for the US it should happen everywhere, but then again it isn’t really a price drop is it.

    Count me disappointed.

  • Thank You Dave Karraker for clearing this mess up.

Yes but will there still be a $499 price point after the supplies of the 60gb SKU stock runs out??? Cause if not then there is no point of my friend buying the $599 80gb SKU with Motorstorm.. he isn’t into that game and 20gb for $40 more and the game for $60 isn’t that great of a bargain compared to just buying the 60gb at $499. he is also holding out until this Holiday season to get a PS3 when more games he would like are out. So if there is no $499 SKU then there is no point.

So the statement doesn’t really answer the question about the main issue which is will there be the $499 point from now on even after the 60gb SKU stock runs out?

  • Are the 60gbs being discontinued?
Are we getting the Public HOME BETA this month?

  • Thanks, now you can start feeding us the demos!

  • They still haven’t clarified whether inventory has ended like Kaz had said, while they’re might plenty to go for the holiday season, I hope Sony will end up getting rid of the 80 gig bundle and releasing the 80 gig by itself for 500 (or less haha) considering the differences in price are minimal in terms of production (I can’t be fooled when it comes to this).

  • Im sorry but im reading on headlines that you guys are discontinuing the 60 gig for 499 and keeping with the 80gig for 599?

EXCUSE ME but what the hell is up with that? Its like the price drop never even existed!! Please don’t tell me this is true. At least keep the price range in the 499 area.

  • Again, it doesn’t make sense to announce it RIGHT NOW, wait until the 60gb supply actually ends.

  • lol they linked my comment.
Well see, now I feel bad. :-)

Thank you Sony, you know we love you and only want the best for you guys. Glad you cleared up that 60gig rumor; had everyone worried for a sec.

  • What’s the deal with Six Axis dual shock? There’s some bad pics on the internet going around claiming that its the new SADS (Six Axis dual shock) controller. Can someone here clear this up please. It’s making us Sony fans look bad!

    Thanks

  • You promise demos, buts on live they have it already… but you response us… its something to start…

  • He may have not cleared this to to how simple everyone would have wanted it, but I have noticed a difference.

From where previously I would check to see if more models of the 60GB would make their way to my local gamestop, some are now posting as Yes instead of all No from when this whole mess started spreading around. So my guess would be yes, they will still be continued to come after they run out.

  • I gotcha,
What about Capcom? Are you lowering the price any more this holiday season?

  • that doesn’t clear things up at all

the sony haters are having a field day with this so unless you clear it up soon all your work at e3 will be lost

i know you cant say the 80gig will be $499 once all 60gigs are gone if that’s the case but at least state you continue to figure what the right price is for ps3 or something

having a $499 for a 2nd time only to remove it and be back to just $599 a 2nd would be suicide

i really dont hope this is the case since you had an incredible e3 showing and im really looking forward to ps3’s future

  • Didn’t the same thing happen when people started to notice the 20gb was being discontined, it was denied then it vanished. Sony have to understand why most users find it hard to believe what gets said even after two good conference showings.

  • I think that dropping the price further in November would make a great push heading into Black Friday and December, but I don’t know if that’s acceptable losses.

  • Erm, that wasn’t clarification of anything, that was a PR response trying to deflect the argument.

  • Thank goodness that you guys have decided to create this forum.. honestly that information almost prevented me from purchasing a PS3 at the end of this month. Thanks for the clarification. As a suggestion, you guys should do a podcast.

  • is the 60gb going gone cuz if so it is time to courrupt my ps3 harddrive

  • az confirms that the $599 price has not really changed by default, and that the $499 price will only last once the 60GB version has sold out.

    (Start from 1min 50seconds)

To me personally, this kills all the positives from E3. Utterly buries it. We’re back to Square One!

  • awesome can’t wait for the demo’s soon rather then later I hope. Also I really hope you do not drop the 60gb SKU, I think it would be a mistake

  • Hooray

  • Another thing after introducing a “price drop” $499 become your new standard.. you can’t go from $499 and completely get rid of that price point it is absolutely ridiculous as a business. When you are bundling and adding HDD to keep a $599 price point that is showing that you can handle a $499 price point and should stick with it.

  • The 60 gb version won’t be dropped, just because they didn’t answer a stupid question doesn’t mean they will do exactly that. Now, why the EU isn’t getting the price cut IS a good question.

  • What do you expect them to say? Yeah, we are not dropping the price of the new unit? Or we are immediately when supply runs out so don’t bother getting a 60gb unit? It doesn’t make sense that way, stop asking for a resolution to this situation because today, there isn’t a good one.

  • not to mention kaz hirai confirms what David Reeves said here:

    http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=10235

pretty stupid of me to think sony would be able to go an entire week without [DELETED] up…

  • I imagine that this answer is somewhat vague because they’re hedging their bet a bit. They want to see if they get a repeat of the pattern with the 20G/60G sales. In the U.S. market, the 20G didn’t sell, so they ended up letting supply run out.

If Sony sees the same pattern again (i.e., everyone buys the 80G product and the 60G one sits on the shelves), then of course they will be perfectly justified in dropping the 60G model. So they’re leaving that option open for themselves.

Personally, I don’t see it happening, especially with the spike of sales after the price drop. I think the 60G will be the prime seller, and the 80G will lag behind in sales (since, after all, it’s not really that big of an improvement). The reactions on this forum would suggest this pattern. But who knows? Sony will certainly want to leave their options open.

But it’s amazing to me how quickly rumors spread and bad press propagates. The “fire sale” thing has even appeared on Penny Arcade. Sony: let this be a lesson in damage control! You gotta be on the ball in this day and age…

  • Sony i freaking love you!!!

  • sony please fire eric because of him we have to take crap from the 360 fanboy.the ps3 dosent deserve all the crap that it gets from people.
the ps3`s store is ridicolus.nothing there and whose falt is it,eric of course.on xbox live there is movie and many etc.on ps store just som videos that we have seen before

  • not to mention kaz hirai confirms what David Reeves said here:

    http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=10235

pretty stupid of me to think sony would be able to go an entire week without messing up…

  • Please clarify your statement.
All you basicly said is that stock was not to run out soon ( within this month) , But you DID NOT say if the price drop will be obsolete once they are sold out, you did also not state if the production for the 60 gig has been stopped or not . Your boss KAz harai DID say that is was.

    So which is it?

  • sony please fire eric because of him we have to take crap from the 360 fanboy.the ps3 dosent deserve all the crap that it gets from people.
the ps3`s store is ridicolus.nothing there and whose falt is it,eric of course.on xbox live there is movie and many etc.on ps store just som videos that we have seen before..

  • This carefully worded but evasive answer confirms the worse. Your refusal to refute the meat of Reeves & Kaz’s comments – that production has ceased on the 60gb PS3 and that the only SKU after the 60gb SKU sells out will be the $599 80gb SKU – confirms that they are true.

Didn’t you learn that a lie of omission is still a lie? Why this fact moral lesson taught to children everywhere escapes Sony PR and Corporate is something for philosophers to debate. The fact is this: by deliberately and intentionally omitting the information that the 60gb has been discontinued during the announcement of the $499 “price cut”, you lied. Lied by creating the impression that there would be two SKU; one at $499 and another at $599 with a bigger hard drive and a game but that we would have a choice between the two. Now, it turns out that choice is dependent on the supply of one of them and once that supplies deletes, the corresponding price is gone too. Small niggling fact you left out, Dave. This “price cut” is not a price cut, it’s a sale. And once the sale is over, a PS3 can only be obtained by paying 600 bucks. This is the fact that your weasel behavior tried to disguise as long as possible. You have the ethics of a Louisiana politicians. Congrats.

  • >>>we are working to make those great games you saw into more interactive content and demos.

  • Thanks for clearing that up Sony

  • Yeah considering Kaz has said production of the 60GB has stopped I think we all know where it is heading!

  • If you decide to discontinue the 60 gig this year, then please just remove Motorstorm from the 80 gig bundle and make that model 500 bucks. Or hell keep the game in the bundle but still drop the price of the 80gig to $500. Either way, people need to see that the PS3 is going down in price.

Otherwise, excellent E3! Looking forward to all of the excellent first party original IP’s!

The 1UP Yours and 1UP Show seemed to like what you guys did as well.

  • The thing is… If you want a PS3, buy 1 right now while they are 500… Who knows if and when they’re gonna drop it. So, really, no one has any reason to ****… I already have my Ps3, have since launch, I’m not mad about this at all… I just wish Sony would stick to a plan and go with it. Xbox 360 is set to drop price next month… This is gonna cripple Sony at 600 bucks. PS3 is a good machine. It does way more than the xbox 360 and the wii could ever do… but it’s 600 bucks and not everyone can afford it like me or the next guy who post… I know a few people who want the Ps3 but just cannot afford to get one. They then buy a 360 core and look like fools. Lower price as fast as you can, Sony. I mean “FOR REAL THIS TIME TOO” Christmas is gonna be a make or break thing for you guys… I’ll be there buying Uncharted, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Little Big planet and Ratchet & Clank all on day 1… but that’s just me. You need about 11 million more of me.

  • This response from Sony PR doesn’t seem to address the concerns of some people. Kaz Harai himself has said after the 60gb is sold out they will be back to the 599 price point.

    http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=10235

he says it at the 1:48 second mark on the video

  • The production of the 60 gig can’t exactly end of they still haven’t announced an 80 gig model for Japan or Europe, it’s still there, so they can still keep their options open.

  • Thank you for coming on here and clarifying things for us.

Oh, and fire David Reeves for causing this mess.

  • Its disingenuous if you don’t intend to fully support the 60GB model. If you shift to the 80GB based on popularity then that’s one thing, but at this point its going to be hard to trust that you’re not just weaning the 60GB’s supply. If you hold a 499. price point through the holidays this will at least make sense, but it will be hard to eliminate the 60 GB sku and reset a 600. price point without hurting your integrity again.
