Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow Taps into All 333MHz on PSP

Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow

Hey everyone, I’m the technical director for SCEA’s Bend studio in Oregon, the developer of the Syphon Filter franchise. We’re working hard on the next chapter in the series, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow for PSP, but I wanted to take some time to give a glimpse into how the PSP’s recently expanded processor speed (333MHz) will help us deliver a look and feel that wasn’t possible under the previous 266MHz limit.

For Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, our concentration was developing an engine that could produce stunning PSP visuals, allowing for significant detail in the environments. For Logan’s Shadow, we naturally wanted to push the detail even further with our focus turning towards interactivity within those environments.

Now we have the ability to introduce Havok physics, water rendering/gameplay (as seen in the screenshot above), larger environments with significantly more interactive elements, and faster AI response times. In short, tapping into the full processor speed of PSP offers increased gameplay opportunities, while still providing the high production qualities you would expect after playing Dark Mirror.

I can’t wait until you see for yourself the difference that 333MHz makes when you get your hands on Logan’s Shadow this fall.

  • Syphon filters were the best 3rd person shooters on the ps1, would it be possible that you guys would do a new syphon filter for the ps3 aswell? =D

  • AWESOME, I got the demo of this game in the mail, and I totally love it. It actually looks BETTER than most PS2 games. I simply cannot imagine how good this game is going to look when it taps into the full 333Mhz of the PSP. Keep up the good work guys!

BTW, after you guys finish this PSP game, you should consider doing a next gen Syphon Filter for the Playstation 3. Seeing what you guys have done on the PSP makes me really excited for any PS3 game you guys may do. I would really enjoy playing Syphon Filters awesome new tacitcal gameplay in beautiful 1080p with ultra realistc Physics, HDR lighting, amazing Textures, and next generation animation. Good work guys and I look forward to seeing what you guys are going to do next.

  • It’s not the processor issue that leaves me impressed, it’s the fact that you guys have the HavOk physics engine up and running on the handheld, AND are able to render water with the game engine like that.

As a certain game once quoted as saying: IMPRESSIVE!

  • this sure looks good on a big screen can’t wait till the new psp hits the store so i can also play it on my 1080 :-p have you tested that too?

  • I love that Sony unlocked the 333MHz!!! One thing though: a while ago after updating to fw v.2.8 or something, some of my old PSP games (atv, gripshift) wouldn’t load saves properly. It would save the game, i would quit out, and the save was still in the memory card. If you boot up the game again, it says the file is corrupt (while trying to load it) and makes me start all over again. now fw v. 3.50 and still no fix. I am dissapointed becasue a can’t realy enjoy these games anymore!!!

  • Looks like a solid 3rd person shooter!

Been longing for great 3rd person shooters aside from Metal Gear Solid, so this is great =).

    Looks amazing too…

  • Im going to pick this up on release day. ive been waiting for a good PSP game. The last one was R&C and before that MGS:PO. This game also looks in some ways better than PS2, and for a handheld thats amazing. Why dont more devs make more sweet looking games like this? My name is Logan, hahah.

  • I loved SF: DM on PSP, it’s one of my favorite games on the platform for sure. I played the new SF demo, and while I liked it, I wish it had let me reconfigure some of the buttons to my liking.

I liked in SF: DM that when I played with the “Classic” control mode, I could use Square and Circle buttons for strafing. That made the Classic mode the best control option in the game for me. Now, in the new SF, I can’t do that anymore – I have to press L1 to strafe and it feels much clunkier than before. I never particularly liked the other two control modes, but I feel you screwed up the Classic mode as well now.

Just make the option to remap some of the buttons, so that strafe is available on Square and Circle.
