Folding@home Update

SUPERVILLAN

We are all very excited here for the release of the new Folding@home (FAH) client for the PS3! This latest update addresses issues in two major areas: user requests and improving the accuracy of the core that we have running on the SPU. In addition, we totally revised the rendering engine for the molecules and added a more sophisticated display format, which is closer to the imagery you find in biology textbooks. This actually required a protocol change and the protein needs to be described in much more detail from Stanford University’s side of things.

We’re lucky to have a very dedicated group of FAH users and many of you have submitted requests, and ideas, for improving the application. While it’s challenging to address every issue raised, we did try to address your burning ones, especially those that interfere with the science or slow down the performance of the PS3 computation network.

Another really cool feature that was also requested by the FAH community is the support of PSP Remote Play. In this latest version we enabled this feature so you can now access FAH remotely from your PSP (that you already own, since it’s such a cool little gadget) which is an awesome combination since the CELL processor is actually doing the Folding job, but the PSP fully controls the UI so you can carry it around with you.

Of course, we still kept all the familiar and useful features of previous versions, such as the IP lights and Multilanguage support for all PS3 supported languages.

It is heart-warming to watch the community rally behind this project – this passion is in turn encouraging us to continue to look for ways to make it better.

  • I would like to see the next update allow for the inclusion of our music files or videos to be played while using FAH. Making our using this a more entertaining feature.

  • i still dont get this

  • This is a little off topic, but I couldn’t find a place to post it. I have a very large question about the game play capabilities of the new FPS games; what happened to the idea of destructible worlds? I strongly remember a game called “Red Faction” where I could blow up any part, or close to it, of the level that I wanted to. I could blow my own way into the building and I could destroy the map to how I see fit to try to beat my opponent. This idea seemed to just fade away over time, and I think that it is the most interesting idea I have ever seen in a video game. If people want to have more than one way to fight a battle, or more than one way to kill a big foe, then why haven’t I seen more game developers making the option available to destroy the map? This ability would add hundreds of ways to fight a big battle! Taking everything that Microsoft and Playstation has achieved with the new graphics and the High Def resolutions; wouldn’t it top the cake by making the graphics of the map and the graphics of everything in the map destructible? If my opponent is hiding out around the corner in a small cave with a Minigun, then i want to take a rocket and blow up the entrance to the cave! Or just blow up the rock ceiling above him and kill him that way! Take “Killzone” for example, and playstation’s amazing computing capability of the PS3, add them together and make the maps destructible! So when I can’t find a way to kill an enemy or if I can’t find an easy or fun way to infiltrate a building, I can just throw a grenade or launch a rocket and make my own way in! Ever since I had the chance to change the map to how I see fit, I have loved it. My friends and I are always finding new ways to kill each other in “Red Faction”; either by blowing a hole in the ground or blowing a hole in a wall and running in with the trigger taped down!! I do have to say that I do like what they are adding with HD graphics and more detailed games, but I think its time to add some destructible capabilities to these games too! It would make them so much more complex, and more fun! What do you guys think?

  • I’m having a problem with this fah thing. Everything was hunky-dory before this latest update. I run the PS3 on a wireless off my Speedstream modem, and usually can count on a 70% or so connection. When fah runs, now, with this update, it always logs me out of the PS network, and my connection drops to like 20-odd percent. Most times I have to re-start the PS3 to get the connection back up where it usually is. Kinda aggravating, and it’s leading me to where I don’t wanna run the stupid thing anymore…
    Any ideas?

  • Okay everyone, I am having some major problems with this new update. I updated F@H. Then when I sign in to Remote Play everything works as it did before UNTIL I try to open F@H from my PSP. When I do so it searches forever on my PSP and eventually drops saying that the PSP could not find the registered PS3.. meanwhile my PS3 seems to freeze- my television instantly goes to blank screen and says “no signal.” I then have to restart my PS3. I have tried re-registering my PSP with my PS3 to no avail. Also, this happened again when I was later in Remote Play and the PS3 went into automatic F@H. The updated Folding@Home works just fine on my PS3 when remote play is not involved. Any ideas?

Also, as far as entertainment within F@H goes, I wouldn’t mind if there wered layered maps or at least a way to recognize major cities around the world. And how about a way to choose what project you’d like to work on?

  • Controlling the PS3 with PSP is cool. But I want an infrared remote control.

I need something small and nice with full support from Sony. Why did you leave out the infrared interface?

What were you thinking? I bought the PS3 and returned it the next day when I found out that it didn’t have the infrared. Why do you want everyone buy your blu-Ray and you are expecting them to throw away their universal remote control and stick with a blue tooth one? I am just trying to understand why you left it out? Was it a mistake, or you have a good reason behind the decision?

Anyone with an entertainment system worth of mentioning already has A universal remote control. Having two remotes defeats the purpose of simplification of systems. Having the controller in hand to watch a movie is not intuitive. Buying a 3rd party infrared remote which works sometimes is not good.

So the PS3 is meant to be a game console, then why the expensive blu-ray now? If it’s meant to be the ‘center’ of any entertainment center, then why not infrared remote?

Just want to know why? Mistake or a cleaver idea?

  • my folding@home program will not work. I was busy downloading it when a thunderstorm made the power in my house glitch and shut off my PS3. Now it won’t let me download it or anything. It just tells me there is an error and I can’t go any farther. Can anyone tell me if there is anything I can do?
