Industry Sales Climb, PS3 Sales Climb Too

205 0

Hey everyone, I’m Mariam Sughayer, analyst relations manager here at SCEA. I’m the gal who works with those guys you see quoted in newspapers and news sites all the time talking about the industry; folks like Michael Pachter and Billy Pidgeon.

Today, the much anticipated NPD numbers were released and we’re very excited about how great July was for video games. If you didn’t know, NPD is the organization that tracks sales of videogames in the U.S. According to NPD, the industry continues to boom with sales of $925.52 million dollars for the month of July – that’s a 37% increase for the industry since this time last year.

From a PlayStation perspective, coming out of E3 we were really anticipating a good reaction to our new hardware pricing announced on July 9th, and we were obviously very pleased to see that PS3 sales increased with 159K units sold at retail for the month of July, which puts us up 61% over June numbers.

While I think a lot of that had to do with the new price, I also think there is a great deal of anticipation for the line up of games just around the corner, including Warhawk (Aug. 28), Lair (Sept. 4) and Heavenly Sword (Sept. 12). In fact, September should definitely be a big month for us when you add in the launch of the new slimmer, lighter PSP which will hit store shelves next month.

I’m going to start posting these sales numbers on a regular basis to keep you guys up to date on the business side of things. Thanks to all of you who made July such a great month for PlayStation. I’ll try to post again here in a few weeks.

  • I have a great idea for an ad campaign. going off of what someone else mentioned, about featurng the numerous uses of the ps3 with a family.

Start of with boy and friends playing game, then when he leaves, his sister come along and plays singstar and downlaods some music. Her mother bumps her out of the way to use the internet and pay some bills. She leaves, system is still on, goes into folding@home. later total family comes together that night, dad pops in a blue ray movie, and everyone is smiling.

The tagline: “Welcome Home” including some features about Home.

my 2 cents and first post.

  • Find PS3 Information » Blog Archive » Sony pleased by recent PS3 sales climb

[…] has responded to this month’s NPD reports on sales. “We were obviously very pleased to see that PS3 […]

  • I can see ‘casual gamers’ wanting to pony up for a PS3, and here’s how: if you guys were to make a deal with Circuit City/Best Buy to have a dedicated PS3 playing Blu-ray movie like “Cars” or “Ratatouille” on a 1080p HDTV that would go a long way to selling the fact that the PS3 is not just a games machine. If Sony can get at least everyone who owns a HDTV in America this holiday season to see that the PS3 offers HD output capabilities via Blu-ray, that would be a tremendous win in the mass consumer mindset.

  • You’re right, on top of the problems Sony has with the price and the lack of contents, they haven’t been able to let peole know what kind of value PS3 offers to the customers and why it can justify its price.
If a recent poll is to be believed even among PS3 owners there are some who don’t know what Blu Ray is!!!

Sony has to change their marketing, most of their ads until now have been studied to push the brand rather than the product, but that’s something you can do when everyone knows what your product is, this is not the case with PS3, people know it’s a Playstation but don’t know what it can do and why it costs so much.
PS3 has technologies which are ahead of the market, which most people don’t even have at home and don’t know how they work so the market has to be educated.
Sony should humble themselves and make traditional advertisment showing people playing the great titles PS3 has or a guy watching a Blu Ray movie on his PS3 and everyone else in his family talking about how much better it looks compared to a DVD, it’s not a shame doing traditional marketing instead of obscure ads with a crying baby doll……..
Of course price is still a big issue, because even if people realize about its value that doesn’t mean thy can afford it anyway. That’s why 399$ is the right price point this year, it has worked very well for the Xbox360 relatively to the hardcore gamers market which still has to fully embrace PS3.
Sony you have a lot of work to do and your deadline is this holyday season if you want to make this product successful.

  • @Sony. I don’t know how much money you’re losing from selling PS3 consoles or how much money you’re making from selling PS2 consoles. Maybe I’m not suppose to know, right?! But, I think if you drop the price of the 60GB PS3 to $400, and raised the price of the PS2 to $179.99 (yes, you read it correctly), great things are bound to happen! Anything, something… something, guys… something. Who are these people just now buying the PS2, where have they been all these years… I got one in 2001 (when MGS2 came out… hello?). That’s right! Drop the PS3’s price, again, and raise the PS2’s price to 179.99… AND RUN SOME COMMERCIALS ON, LIKE, TELEVISION!!! Naysayers tell me if I’m crazy and why. Proponents tell me if I hit the nail on the head. Go PS3, Go!

  • Sony, I hope you take some of the comments in your blog as comments of concern for a brand that people either care about or have invested their money and time into. As a PS3 owner I’m glad numbers are up since more sales equals more support from developers. However, you really need to listen more (notice I’m not saying you doon’t listen because I know you do). People have been clambering for rumble since the day you announced its removal from the PS3. Please give it to us! and if you don’t give us a good down to earth response that doesn’t include personal testimonies within Sony that claim they didn’t enjoy it as much (like jack Trenton). Just say we are having troubles with the sixaxis or we are having legal difficulties, or we don’t want to confuse developers . .. something! Secure exclusive. Make PS3 the permanent MGS series home! Get 2K to create Bioshock for you! Pay Universal for movie exclusiviy on BR discs. have the XMB accessible during gameplay (so i can’ respond to messages or send them by pausing the game momentarily). Let us join games with and without home.

If we are asking for too much then say so and tell us what is reasonable and plain absurd

ANd lastly, I think it is awesome that DVR may come to PS3 users worldwide. Just remmebr the majority of us but this system for gaming, having everything else that it offers as an added and welcomed bonus… not the other way around.

  • The people at Sony should really pay attention to what their fans are telling them. These are the people that made the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 industry leaders. Yes, we ask a lot and expect nothing less than total domination. We’re there for you, now is your turn.

  • @ Jtate15.
What an amazing idea for a commercial? You’re a marketing genius. I wonder if SCE would use it… let’s see…

  • Totally agree with comments 105,106

  • @ 101

That would be a great commercial for the PS3.

  • This is also a bit off subject buy MGS4 must stay a PS3 exclusive! I read yesterday that someone on the MGS4 team quoted “MGS4 is a staying on the playstaion…for now.” I mean what are we suppose to think is it or is in not, can we please get a straight answer!!

  • @111

Yeah, it sucks that they can’t just kill the rumor with a simple straight answer. I’m actually starting to worry now.

  • Dudes MGS4 will come to Xbox360, remember what happened with MGS2 on PS2?
Same thing. The game will be exclusive to PS3 for a few months then they will release a new version with a few extras on both PS3 and Xbox360. Konami can’t ignore the extra sales they can make on 360 in the US market.
There’s no reason to be worried about though because everyone who really wants the game will buy a PS3 for it, the first release is the one which really matters and has the hype behind it, same thing for games like Oblivion and Bioshock, they are/will be on Ps3 but won’t have the same impact they had with their first release on Xbox360,moreover the Xbox version will be inferiorior because the game is being made to use PS3 from the ground up.

  • @SlyTheBoss : I know that they got close to the Xbox 360 in July, but I really want to see how the August numbers do. It will be interesting because both Sony and Microsoft’s price drops will be in effect.

Also remember that the price drop did not come into effect until after July 9th, so that means that the PS3 had 2-3 weeks to surpass the Xbox 360 in terms of sales. Not much time, though they could have pulled it off, but didn’t.

Let’s see how they both fair when the August sales figures come out.

  • @Savage: PS3 will do again 160k if they’re lucky.
Xbox 360 sales IMO will be in the 250k-300k range thanks to the price cut plus the Madden and Bioshock effect.
September will be even worse with Halo 3… :(
August and September are already a lost cause but Sony has a chance to do well in the October-December period if they have a 399$ SKU on the market (the ideal would be the 80GB PS3 at 399$) and games like Heavenly, Lair, Ratchet will push the interest toward the system.

  • hey really a good post send more its good to keep us informe. And i know there a lot of people wait for the drop price :) so keep the good work and me i tell to every one ps3 its the best (but put better classic games for psp the psstore @#$%) AND WARHAWK IN $ DAYYYYYYYYY WWWooooOoOOOooTtTttt

  • @ SlyTheBoss :
    Starting from this page http://vgchartz.com/weekly.php?date=39271
check out the sales figures ( if they are accurate as they claim to be ) for PS3 compared to Xbox 360 for Worldwide sales…

Week Ending 8th of July 2007
    X360 60,469
    Ps3 60,437

    W/E 15th July
    PS3 90,820
    X360 58,261

    W/E 22nd July
    Ps3 86,027
    X360 57,775

    W/E 29th July
    PS3 106,760
    X360 61,762

    W/E 5th August
    PS3 99,126
    X360 61,899

    W/E 12th August
    PS3 99,026
    X360 78,441

    W/E 19th August
    Ps3 97,183
    X360 85,533

What’s interesting about these figures is that the PS3 is more expensive than the Xbox 360 and has significantly less games that the Xbox 360, yet for 6 weeks world wide it out sold the Xbox 360 ( note the price drop is NOT world wide ).

My guess is that the W/E 26th the Xbox should be on a par or better than the Ps3, but after that ( around the end of September ) the PS3 will out sell it again through to Christmas once everyone’s Xbox 360 has RROD due to playing games like BioShock and Halo 3 and the release of games like Heavenly Sword, Lair, WarHawk and any other PS3 games I have forgotten to mention.

  • Sony I don’t care if this applies, but GT5:Prologue better come to North America like it will in Asia and Europe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Potential Customer

@ Everyone that thinks education will sell the PS3

First of all, before my message is read the wrong way, the PS3 could use far better marketing as a game machine. I work as a commercial banker. I am intrigued by and I follow the video game industry as intensely as I do my local real estate market. Normally I am an early adopter. In college I ate ramen noodles waiting for 9/9/95. There was no doubt the $400+ that I didn’t need to spend for a new PS with games would be worth it. And it was.

Last October, I purchased a new 60” Sony TV w/ 1080p input with intention of soon buying a PS3 to go with it. The features that it is being said that people don’t know about was to me some very cool bonuses to have with “the future of gaming”. I knew what a blu-ray was and that to benefit from the most from that feature I’d have to wait on TVs capable of 1080p input.

My new PS3 is scheduled to arrive from sonystyle.com next Wednesday. Unlike in 1995, I have been prepared to spend $600 from day one without having to pinch pennies to do it or ask an adult that thinks gaming is ridiculous to buy it for me. It boils down to this. $500 is a tough price point for a lot of people, even the people that can afford it simply because of the available games (or the $WORTH of any console). Especially with $100 upconverters that play people’s regular DVDs in HD or a system for $350 that plays much of the same and more, with certain titles better.

I bought a PS3 without seeing a game that proves it is without question more capable of better looking games than the competition. With a $150 discount, that put the PS3 at the same price point of the competition but I contemplated the purchase for awhile. I believe in Sony or I wouldn’t have bought the system. But Sony, please realize, you need some games, and soon, that an average consumer can see that only the PS3 can handle. Or you need another price cut, and I don’t mean the 80gb for $499. I don’t know if either is possible, but with both, we’d all be reassured of a sound investment.

  • Nice! Can’t wait to get Heavenly Sword!

I truly believe that’ll be the game to sale A LOT of ps3s

  • @ Jtate15
Totally agreed. That’s a brilliant set up. It may be a bit long for a 30 sec commercial, but wouldn’t it just be brilliant to have it looping on all Sony Bravia LCD’s in Best Buy or Circut City or with the PS3 set up right there so people can see it and realise the vision that Sony is trying to sell? Good stuff Jtate

  • You want an accurate commercial? try this..

you open up with one of those… “i’m an xbox 360.. I’m a ps3” type of ads. Two guys talking..

Except as soon as the words “i’m a 360” are uttered.. the guy in question clutches his chest, has a heart attack and dies. Medics immediately surge in and haul out a defibrilator and shock him back to life. He starts to get up but BANG! falls down dead again. Eventually he gets to his feet and the Ps3 asks him “Are you okay?” The 360 shuffles off screen followed closely by the medics and answers ” No problem.. happens all the time.”

  • Sony has got to reduce Playstation 3 prices, especially now that the Microsoft “wad” had the Paramount CEO turn over HD-DVD exclusive support dropping Blu-Ray…
A PS3 should cost $300-350 to take the market by storm, and Sony should manage to have that street price set by XMas’07 in order to smash Microsoft/Toshiba/DVD-Forum plans to impose low quality formats and products.

  • Oh, yes.. I almost forgot.. the upcoming XBox360 firmware update is going to add XVID playback support… what is you there at Sony going to do about it ? When will the PS3 allow to playback all major video/audio formats and containers ?

  • @jtate

that is exactly what i had in mind!!

  • Sony if you are happy with those number you HAVE A PROBLEM!

For us it’s easy we already have a PS3. Try to convince the peoples who doesn’t got one!

2008 is shaping to be the year for PS3, BUT you have to survive in 2007 first. The next 2 months will be crucial for you guys. I hope you got something really good to pass trough. ( and NOT Heavenly Sword or Warhawk )

I have no more FAITH in you guys . I’m waiting for too long. You should have been more prepared for the launch. And now you suffer .

In the end, I don’t care anymore I have an X360 too and if you want to fail and be the biggest electronic disaster in history be it.

It’s just a shame that the best multimedia device in the world will end this way.

PROVE ME WRONG SONY…PLEASE DO SOMETHING NOW!

  • I love how no matter what truth you throw in Sony’s face…like their lack of everything and faults…they ignore it like nothings wrong, like their perfect and proceed to blow smoke up our asses like “oh sales numbers are up”…you can take that smoke and blow it up your own ass…

Im taking a firm stand and downloading nothing and i mean NOTHING from PSN…until there is something worth downloading…Im not buying another game until a game is released in 1080p…i didnt spend all this $ to begin with on a next gen system to have my gay rated T games play in 720p while the xbox upscales EVERYTHING to 1080 AND the best part is that the xbox isnt even using HD DVD or bluray for there discs and yet the graphics and resolution are better then PS3

WHEN WILL SONY REALIZE THEIR [DELETED] UPS AND FIX IT????

  • I can go on and on about resolution issues, lack of content, lack of sony communication, sony’s arrogance, lack ps3 support and too much ps2 support…but i dont have 3 hrs to sit here typing

US GAMERS HAVE TO TAKE A STAND…so if your one of those types that has your nose so far up Sony’s ass and tell people to sell their PS3’s then STOP READING RIGHT HERE and go away!!

The contact us link does nothing…the posting on the blog does nothing…the only thing that will get the point across is when we all take a stand and stop taking the [DELETED] Sony feeds us and saying “thank you sir may i have another”…NO! [DELETED] That….when you stop downloading the crap on the PSN or even the cheezy ass ports coming over from the 360 cuz the only games written for the PS3 are the games made by Sony AND THOSE ARE STILL IN 720…why am i buying into the “FUTURE OF HD” with bluray and still have my games in 720 which isnt even FULL HD…um even an idiot can tell you FULL HD IS 1080 SONY…what 3rd party game isnt a port as well???…and isnt a bad port at that?? RB6 IS A HORRIBLE PORT…GRAW2 isnt much better at least they made it so it wouldnt upscale to 1080 and look like garbage…instead its only 720 and is still garbage!!!!!!!!!!!

SONY IS NOT GETTING ANOTHER [DELETED] PENNY FROM ME UNTIL SONY MAKES ME BELIEVE THE PS3 IS THE “FUTURE” OF GAMING AND HD…CUZ THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING BUT CONVINCE ME OF THE CONTRARY!!!!

  • how bout THAT Mariam…any comments???

    NO??…LOL…i thought so

  • Yup at this point it would be nice to hear something from Sony, that they are aware of their problems and that they are taking actions to change things significantly this holyday season.

  • And to change things significantly I hope they aren’t just planning to sell the 80GB PS3+ first party game at 499€ when the 60GB units will be out of stock because it’s laughable and they won’t go anywhere with that.
Microsoft will sell their Xbox360 Premium at 349$ with 2 free games this holyday season.

  • These sales numbers are promising. I wasn’t expecting the PS3 sales to crush the 360’s in one month but its sales are finally neck and neck with the 360 in the US. I don’t really know if Sony cares about my opinion or not but I’ll at least give my own two cents. I bought my PS3 a week ago because quite frankly I didn’t want to keep getting a 360 repaired because it would melt down on highly graphical games. I also really didn’t want to wait and see when the new Falcon 360 will be out. Microsoft’s 1st party games suck anyway. Halo 2 was a big letdown and I haven’t been convinced that 3 will be any different. I know that after the PS3s first year that games will begin to flow out much better and not be just pushed out lazy ports of 360 games. I hope this is the case anyway. The first year of the 360s lifespan was nearly identical with crappy games and high resolution ports of old gen games. There was nothing until Gears of War and then there was even a gap between that game and the next great ones. I also realize that devs are still learning the PS3’s architecture and Sony really needs to get out there and help all who need the help. Much like Microsoft is doing with XNA 2. Apparently big and rich EA couldn’t learn it in time for its current sports games, which in my opinion is a bold face lie. They are taking priority with their 360 games right now. Hey Sony, throw some money at them because right now you need to get the best Madden available to sell some more units. I hope Metal Gear Solid 4 is the beginning of the PS3s run for more support next year if not then I guess my PS3 will just be a Blu-Ray player in the next couple of years. I hope I made at least some sense with this comment.

  • lol look at everyone. the experts of marketing come out. why dont you guys just join sonys marketing. FYI the ps3s launch wasnt bad at all, in fact we are beating the competition in japan and…well..everywhere els. Halo 3 is washed up, it doesnt offer anything new, its like the console version of WoW. it lives off its playerbase and those players will start to move on. i dont know if you guys havnt noticed but there is quit a selection of nice ps3 games out there already. armored core is awsome, resistance, oblivion, ninja gaiden, the darkness, fight night round 3, motorstorm, rainbow 6 and those are just a few. some are exclusives some arnt. sonys not going to let their system fall, look at the ps2, they know more about marketing then you. you can act smart and try to make up marketing plans yourself, acting like you know more then sony does, but sony knows how to sell their own system, we are NOT a team as some of you think. sony has to listen to themselves only when it comes to marketing, we’ve put 600$ into the ps3, thats it though, they have put in BILLIONS and the money they are going to get highly depends on their own marketing while we wont lose any money, they will. they cant afford to listen to a plan that some guy off of the ps3 blog made up to controle their cash flow. chances are, most of your “geniouse” plans have huge flaws, and while you would just sit on your couch and say “oops” they would be broke. stop trying to tell sony what to do, they know what they are doing, just relax and enjoy the ps3. look on the site for the up and comming new games.

  • PS3 has to compete to it self to be number one, 360 is not half of the power of PS3 son little by little the PS3 will be number one for another dacade, just compete by it self

    Go Sony Go PS3!!!
when the ps2 dies the corpses of the console will rise the ps3 to the top of the sky!!

  • To everyone:
First and foremost, PSN is not XBLA so live with it. XBLA is great, but it didn’t start out like that. I remember the first months of XBLA were as bad as PSN content wise. Just recently, the influx of demos has started pouring, and only because of 360’s higher install base, and the fact that 3rd parties are used to developing for it. Give PSN some time. If a year from now, it still has that dearth of content, then we should start worrying.
I don’t know but there is definitely an improvement recently. We had Folklore this week, Dirt and NCAA Football last week, and hopefully more next week.

As far as games go, yes Sony lost some exclusives, but you should look at the reasons. This generation, there are rarely any third party AAA titles that are not multi-platform. It costs tons of money to build them. The only ones like Bioshock, Katamari, or Ace Combat involved a lot of cash exchange, and we all know how infinite MS’es bank accounts are. No company in the world can compete with them in that field. I just hope some legal action is taken to curb this bribery going forward although I am not sure if this isn’t legal. If someone can inform me, that would be great.

And the final concern regarding third parties looking better on the 360. Well guys again, the 360 was out for one year longer. Developers are much more comfortable developing for it, but this will change next year. EA already promised FIFA 08 to run 60 FPS on the PS3. 2k promised NBA 2k8 to run at 60 FPS, and the rest will follow.

Plus concerning the dearth of games, there are more than 10 games on my buying list for the PS3 this year only. Next year we’ll be having another onslaught of AAA exclusive titles like MGS, Killzone2, Infamous, FFXIII , FF vs XIII and GT5, not to mention Little Big Planet, and the rest of the games that haven’t been announced yet (I’m looking at you ICO directors ;) ). Just be patient, support the PS3, and good things will happen.

  • Most of you live in a “war” beetween consoles. I really dont have any interest if my console seles more or less then the others, thats ridiculus. PS3 isnt going to die…relax. Its alive, and will be for a long time. I am very satisfyied with mine, and with my option. If the others bought other, good for them, they made they decision, and i will by any means try to tell them they are wrong.

So all this Xbox sell Y and Wii sold X, i really dont understand. When i buy something i look at the market, inform myself and buy the one i want. But i dont turn myself in a sick fanatica fanboy.

So leave the other consoles out of this blog, they really dont belong here.

PS3 is here to stay, will grow in numbers in its own ritmum.

In terms of marketing the most important is the mouth to mouth, and to really win this, PS3 will need great games, and they will come out naturally, and then people will buy it more. So its all a question of time, we all know that. If u have a system, u can have them all, u dont have to become a sick competitor agains all others that are in the market. Just forget them.

We arent happy with others misery (forget what others do), we are trully happy with our achivements.

    Just relax people

  • Rabid fans need not respond, but this article has me intrigued.

    http://ps3.qj.net/Mitsubishi-develops-3D-Blu-ray-player-for-early-2008/pg/49/aid/100735

Mitsubishi is working on a pair of glasses which will display blu-ray films in 3d. They coyly said they were in talks with a console manufacturer to see if they could integrate the two products. Since blu-ray was mentioned, we’d have to assume that Sony was the company in question.

I know some people are going to keep screeching about games being the most important element of the ps3 but after playing RFOM for a couple hours I don’t mind having other options.

Hell… if they can convert 2d-3d on the fly then why can’t we start playing in 3d? I guess it’ll come down to whether the product is a gimmick or an innovation. Defining points will be quality and price i think.

Couple this with the Eye and you have a 3d environment that you can interact with. I’m curious what other people think about this or whether they even care. Is this something consumers would like? If it’s done well…. i’d definitely be interested.

  • I foresee Home getting a crap load of PS3s sold. It’s a total chick magnet. Sims done right on a console.

  • Well its nice to see sales rise for the ps3.

  • Yes, Home is expected to be a console mover, and I for one expect to be spending 10 hrs a week on it once it’s out, but it just seems like all of a sudden there is absolutely no news on this, just when it’s supposed to be launched (FALL 07). What about the large scale beta, anybody in here being invited in? What happened?

  • Ah, the rabid fanboys. Always entertaining.

Now, for a different ‘spin’ if you would like to call it that. Sony has not done much marketing at all for the PS3, yet I own one, and I’m betting that most of you do too…? Right. If not, why aren’t you playing Xbox and shutting up? Even Xbox kids are planning on buying a PS3 down the line, that is the way things are. End of story. All my Xbox friends that bash my PS3 right now just claim that after this holiday, they will probably pick one up, as that they are just waiting for more games. The lack of features in a console like this is more than expected, as that Sony has never been too much into software outside of games. You don’t see something like Home coming standard on a Bravia HDTV do you? No, that kind of innovation takes time, and practice. Same applies to things like the oh so fabled in-game XMB. This is a feature not even the 360 had right off the bat. Microsoft just applied it first, like any good console that’s a year earlier than it’s competitors should. Think of where the 360 is now in terms of features, and think about how much further the PS3 will be in the same time frame. AND YES, I know it sucks to wait, and not be “the coolest kid on the block with the coolest console” RIGHT NOW, but, come on, be realistic. How about you go sit in the place of the system software developers, that are working day and night, testing bugs and new ideas to try to appease us, and then finding out that they didn’t write the code right, and it’s gonna be a couple more weeks before we get wallpapers. Not only is it damaging to us, but to them as well. Think about how much work goes into writing that code, and how your expertise, and name (within the company or not) are at stake. That is a hit to a person’s self esteem, and then to kick them when they are down, is just sickening and sad.

    “WE WANT IN GAME XMB!!!”

    “WE WANT BETTER MARKETING!”

    “WE WANT MORE GAMES!!”

We want, want, want. Never consider the feelings of the HUMAN BEINGS WORKING AT SONY. They have a corporate face of course, but think about how if our support doesn’t help them, people will be out of jobs, just because we aren’t supportive and are just screaming things like “WHAT THE [DELETED] IS WRONG WITH YOU SONY!?!?”

Nothing is wrong with them, and yes, their numbers for a $500/600 system, are actually phenomenal right now. Think real hard about how there has never been a console this expensive on the market, yet the penetration in the market for this system is already looking better than it’s predecessor. Also consider that the 360 is only selling as well as it’s former self. That means that the PlayStation family still hasn’t jumped ship. They are just waiting for games, and then, what do you know, MORE SALES. More sales equals more money put into things like marketing. More marketing means more accessibility to the general public. It’s such a vicious circle. Don’t worry about the financial state of SCE. They are gonna be fine, they aren’t pulling a “Dreamcast”. They are Sony. They have just as much of a chance of going away as Microsoft does now. Things can only look up for them right now, and that was the message of this post. It was not gloating, it was not to be like “HEY LOOK HOW AWESOME WE ARE DOING AGAINST OUR STUPID COMPETITION!”

It was a bit more subtle, focusing on what matters to Sony. Such as THEIR numbers. Not everyone elses. Other people’s numbers don’t make them money. So yeah, they don’t care. But when PS3 sales are up, yeah, they are gonna be happy, because that means that they are doing SOMETHING right. So just give them a break. If you’re still not happy with your PS3 after December this year, then they (or you actually) might have a problem, but for now, just shut your mouths and let good things come in time. Have freakin patience.

Here’s to the up and up Sony,

    Cheers, Jon

you know all that is true…and i know all this crap already…but when a person buys the ps3 at launch and has nothing to play but resistance for 6 months while being promised all this content to be released “soon” and yet nothing comes out is terribly upsetting and then have content be released via ports into bad 720 resolution games…what happened to the “Future of HD & Gaming” Bluray disc for 720p??? thats retarded…upscaling for ps, and ps2 games but not for ps3 games??…does that make sense? besides if i want to play PS or PS2 games i’ll play them on their respective system…i bought the PS3 for next gen games in not last gen (even though last gen games can upscale to 1080 and next gen cant) and yet developers are still making games for the PS2 not PS3…thats frickin dumb…KILL THE PS2…yea people may cry but TOO BAD…if your gonna look to the future then how bout closing the chapter on the past…Sony is making it so blatently obvious that their first priority is the PS2 even though it should be in the geriatric unit for game consoles…PS3 will NEVER grow like it should until the PS2 passes away…then maybe we’ll get content, in game xmb, games in 1080p, rumble…etc etc…i’m guilty of buying into the hype of the PS3…and im not the happiest fan right now…does that waiver my faith in Sony? no…but it made me mad to the point that i will not spend a dime on a game NOT in 1080…sorry…aside from the not so good reviews of Warhawk, Lair or Heavenly Sword…I cant bring myself to spend $60 on something thats not 1080p and 60fps not even Lair is 60fps…so when the developers get it right then i’ll start spending money!!!!!!!!!

  • …one simple reason Sony won’t ‘kill’ the PS2 – they’d go bust, or the game division would anyway. Revenues from PS2 harware and software sales are supporting PS3 – not Sales from PS3 harware/software.

Besides there is still a lot of developers (big hitters among them) that still publish PS2 games, and make a lot of money from them – more so than from PS3 or 360.

Money made from God Of War 2 on PS2 will probably exceed revenue generated by both BioShock for the 360 and MGS4 for the PS3 combined.

  • @Swiss Trev

Im not saying you dont have a point…but did MS go bust when they killed the Xbox?? NOPE!!…So if MS can do it, Sony shouldnt have an issue with it…

And that would be quite sad if Sony went bust cuz they cancelled a last gen system now that a new next gen system was released now almost a year ago

so listen to how crazy that statement sounds…”…one simple reason Sony won’t ‘kill’ the PS2 – they’d go bust, or the game division would anyway”

if that were the case then the PS3 shouldnt have even been released…they should just stick to the last generation

If more attention is going to the PS2 there shouldnt be a PS3…but i guess Sony likes competing against itself…goes to show how much faith THEY have for the PS3

  • @Loucifer

MS didn’t go bust because they can very easily afford to take the hit – Sony however cannot, they are no where near as liquid or profitable as MS….not even in the same ball park.

MS made a conscious decision to opt for an aggressive game plan regarding video games consoles….they’re looking at a long term strategy of complete dominance (much like with PCs) no matter what the short term cost.

Sony had no choice but to go forward with PS3, if they hadn’t then they would have lost everything they’ve worked for over many years (could almost say their hand was forced) Imagine if there was only the 360 & Wii in this generation – chances are Sony would never be able to get back in to the race again at a later date.

MS didn’t continue with the original Xbox because they now had something which was far advanced of any console available (I’m talking pre PS3 release here) They knew they never stood a chance of winning the battle with PS2, so why continue with a machine that was always going to play second fiddle to Sony’s masterpiece. But now they see an opportunity to get ahead of the game, to get a head start on the rival (as Sony did first time around) and it’s worked, they’ve got a 7 million head start that may take Sony years to surpass. Ok they rushed it out, it overheats on older models but it gives the average (majority) gamer what he/she wants: great games that look as good as anything out at the moment and an almost perfect online experience whether it be shopping/multiplayer/downloading demos. Everything they did regarding the Xbox’s online functionality has paid dividends – they ironed out the flaws, saw what people wanted and so when the 360 arrived they delivered it. Sony’s very lackluster approach to the PS2 online functionality is now biting them in the arse – they’re having to learn everything from scratch, learning from their mistakes as they go along while the rival machine has all it’s kinks ironed out and delivers exactly what is required

I didn’t say more attention was going on PS2 rather than PS3…I simply said they cannot afford to turn their backs on a very lucrative cash cow. I don’t know the figures but I’d guestimate that they get significantly more revenue from the PS2 than from the PS3.

The sheer number of PS2 owners out there that still buy software means that developers & publishers will continue to create games for many years to come. There is a Tesco superstore near where I live that solely stocks PS2 and DS games – they stocked the top ten 360 & PS3 titles for a few months but have now replaced the shelf space with games that make more money.

  • Wii creamed everyone… again.

And the sad part is that last generation’s hardware, the PS2, still outsells the PS3. Shouldn’t people be eager to jump on the PS3 bandwagon and buy a PS3 which is backwards compatible with the PS and PS2 games?

I guess despite the new and improved, temporary, price drop, people still aren’t all that interested.

  • Sony sticking with the PS2 is great!!! Unlike MS who dropped the XBOX once 360 is out is horrbile. How about all those people who don’t or can’t upgrade to the next gen? That’s terrible loyalty on MS part and know one says anything about that.

PS3 sales will increase very quickly once the PS2 really start to move to next gen.

When should we expect the next gen to start if MS could it would be in 2 year..What a joke…

  • I don’t consider the Wii a competitor to the PS3. It appeals to a different audience and is generally meant for less ‘hardcore’ gamers, I guess you could say, but rather for the more casual ones.

I’ve played it. While fun, it is more of a novelty to me than something I’d consider buying and playing for an extended period of time.

In fact, the PS3 beat the PS2 in sales the first 2 weeks of this month by at least a couple thousand each week. But could you blame people for buying them? It is a great system with a huge collection of very good games. Both the system and the games are also very cheap, a lot of the good games being only $20.

I’d imagine its mostly parents are buying them for their kids(same with the Wii). Who wants to spend $500 for a console for their kids who wouldn’t fully appreciate it anyway? :)

Hell, the PS1 outsold the Xbox for awhile when it came out. But the PS3 is consistently selling more then the 360 lately(40-50% more per week) and sales are slowly going up.

I’m sure as soon as the PS3 gets more of the exclusives that everybody is waiting for that the sales will go up even more.
