Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Moves Closer to Gold

Hello again! The countdown is on and we are only two weeks away from a Gold Master. We’re down to the point where every minute matters. The QA departments are working around the clock (and around the globe … in Europe and Japan) looking for any last bugs that we need to get cleaned up before we can ship.

Things are hectic around our studio as we’re trying to juggle several tasks at once. Not only are we trying to wrap up production on the game, but we’re also working frantically on helping with the package design and the strategy guide as well. We’ve also scheduled one last impromptu focus test this weekend in our office so that we can check to make sure that any of the last minute tweaks we’ve made to certain aspects of the game haven’t thrown off any of the previous game balance tuning that we’ve done.

Richard Lemarchand was up North in the Bay Area doing a whirlwind media tour on Thursday and Friday of last week. He stopped by the offices of many magazines and websites to show off the latest build of the game and to give some last minute updates before we send off the final disc for review. Be sure to keep an eye out for coverage and gameplay footage online. This preview from IGN is one of the first I’ve spotted.

We’re also preparing to create another trailer to be released in the coming weeks. Taylor Kurosaki, our video editor, is working on selecting the music to use in the next one and planning out the flow and the structure to tease the story just enough without giving too much away.

The final mixes of sound, music and dialog are all being added to our cinematics and it’s really coming together nicely. We’re also getting back all of our localized assets so that we can ship Uncharted simultaneously around the world in 13 languages!

For more information, be sure to visit the official game Web site.

  • Sounds great. There is a fantastic buzz going on this game, and we’re all looking forward to seeing the goods. Thanks for keeping us updated!

  • Thanks for the update. Sounds like a pretty hectic time. Game looks brilliant and look forward to playing it. I really hope for a smooth framerate though …. and plese fix the screen-tearing! Don’t let me down like Lair and HS!

    All the best…..

  • The hype for your game has rocketed up in the past few weeks, whatever your doing, your doing it right! Good luck with it all, this game is going to be great, and i hope your responce to this post is as great as your last one was, implementing 1080i and telling us about the demo was top notch.

  • Also, will this trailer be on the PSN the same day? The trailers always look so much better off there, because they are on my hdtv.

  • awesome! getting Uncharted on day 1.

  • @ Evan Wells

Approximately how many hours of gameplay are in uncharted?

Thanks for the update! I can’t wait to get my hands on this game!

  • it’s just tomb raider by any other name. i don’t think this is making my must have list as there are too many other games coming out soon, and after all the hype and disappointment over Lair i’m never buying anything i haven’t had the demo of or rented and totally sure about again for the ps3.

  • Yea, i’d also like to know how long the game is, As you can see from 3 posts outta 7, im pretty interested in this game!

  • Nice one Naughty Dog. This game is awesome. Definately going to be buying it DAY ONE when it is released here in the UK

  • @TheDevilsJoker, yeah it’d be harder for it to be shorter than Heavenly Sword! i can imagine this game has plently of gameplay but what is it bringing new to the party?

What a nice thing to post in this comment area. “You’re game is a rip off and looks crap” (or that was the jist of it anyway!

  • Its not bringing anything revolutionary but thats the point, its like playing an oldschool adventure movie with explosions and shootouts for buryed treasure. Like ratchet and clank from insomniac, they are giving us a perfection of oldschool style before moving forward. That and then graphics, animation, Humor and gameplay all look fun!

  • I get so sick of people saying “Just Tomb Raider with a guy”

  • how can you guys say its not bringing anything new? Maybe the main idea isnt new, but a lot of things are new. I’ve never seen a game character that feels so much like a real human.

  • OH YEAH….

thanks for the update Evan. Can’t wait to play ND’s first next gen title on my PS3.

I hope everything goes smothly from now until release.

  • Hey guys,

So I see a lot of questions about the length of the game. It’s always a tricky question to answer since people’s skill levels vary so much. But I think it’s safe to say that it would be hard to finish it the first time in less than 10 hours. And I think a much more average play time is probably closer to 12. We have 3 selectable difficulty levels from the start of the game (Easy, Normal, and Hard) and one that is unlockable (Crushing!), so you can decide how much of a challenge you want. We’ve also made it possible to change your difficulty setting mid-game, so if you feel you made a mistake a couple of hours in, you can switch without having to start over.

And as for replayablity, we have a bunch of hidden treasure to search for throughout the environments and Medal Points you can earn by showing off your skills as you play the game. These can all be used to unlock some pretty cool secrets (concept art, behind the scenes movies, skins, cheats, etc.)

    Hope that answers your questions!

  • “so that we can ship Uncharted simultaneously around the world in 13 languages!” Does that quote mean that here in England we’ll be seeing the game at the same time as America instead of about a month later???? Because that would rock!

  • yay! can’t wait. Are we getting a demo on PSN? Also- was adding 1080i support really so easy you had it done in hours?

  • Ooooo, Changing difficulty mid-game is good, But im assuming that means no home trophies or anything for ‘Completeing the game on crushing’ because you could just get to the end and turn it over at the last minute. Love the idea of cheats and skins, been so long since a game wasnt scared to have cheats. Closest is Big head mode on motorstorm.

  • Good stuff. I could handle 12 hours. I like the explore and look at things, so hopefully that will extend it. As long as I can’t finish it in 8 hours or something I’m good. Also awesome news about the difficulty settings. I hate how most games force you to restart if you want to play it on other setting.

  • Argh, I dont like this filter on words thats been put when certain things are said.

    Anyway,

  • I want it now!

  • Huh? okay thats damn strange anyway…

Love Evan for his quick repsonses.

And please make some D L C for this game! or some heads will be rolling!

  • Thanks for telling us an average play-time there Evan. You the man!

  • I think that when Evan said “skins”, he’s probably talking about Drake’s ‘2006 original trailer’ T-shirt ;).

I’d love to see that t-shirt be a unlockable selectable costume!

  • Thanks Evan. Keep up the good work. The excitement for this game is growing thick.

  • can’t wait for this game, this and rachet and clank are the games ima make sure i have cash for on release day been playing naughty dog games since the first crash, keep up the good work!
(still playing crash on the ps3)

  • Simultaneous release FTW!

  • very niiice!

  • Why have we not seen any advertising for this game? We also have not seen any advertisement for Ratchet and Clank Future.

It strikes me as odd that two of the biggest first party Sony games for this holiday season have so far had zero TV commercial presence. In fact there are just so few PS3 commercials out there when compared to the competitors, who’s commercials appear to be run CONSTANTLY.

It is going to be difficult to sell games/systems when you have virtually no TV advertising.

  • Nice. But I have 2 questions:

    1. Will there be a Multiplayer Online mode planned for a future? Since the game should do nicely online, for what I have seen.

    2. Is the demo going to be release before the game goes gold or after?

Anyways, great job so far guys, I’m looking forward to this game.

  • Hi Evan. Are you all any closer to integrating the PSP into a PS3 game as and optional camera view or it could display a map of your location?

Glad to hear the game is almost gold!!!! Can’t Wait.

  • 10-12 Hours thats good we PS3 owners like 20+ hours but if the game is good we are happy, Gamestop is releasing the game on 11/20/07 i have it reserve i cant wait

  • The game is sounding great and am going to pre order it. :-) Any chance of a demo before hand?

  • Hey Evan

    What about multiplayer?

  • I can’t wait to play this game! That last picture looks insane.

It’s going to be really interesting to see what Naghty Dog is doing next, a next-gen Jak & Daxter with a huge world and is like the first Jak & Daxter would be nice. ;)

  • Evan and people before have said a billion times already that there is no online and there isn’t going to be one. Not every game with guns needs online. There’s going to be plenty of replay value.

  • are there going to be any more games with jak and daxter? how about a daxter for psp ps2 port? and what about the lost frontier?

jak and daxter was my first ps2 game, and i want it on ps3!!!

  • thats great guys…

Love how you’re updating us on the status of the title….

Uncharted looks promising…I may just be getting this :)

  • Wahoo! Thanks for the update, and thanks for answering the game length question too :)

  • Looks great! And the new many language route you guys are taking is killing! Especially since they’re all spoken straightly and they’re not obvious translations like movies. But I gotta ask the same questions as the others, are there demo plans, and multiplayer, at least in the future. Also the idea of using the PSP as a map is awesome… or wasome nice one andrewsqual.

  • Yeah, I agree with #37. What is up with the lack of advertising for PS3 games, especially the big guns like Uncharted and R&C? There are constantly ads on TV for the competition, and even multiplatform games show the 360 logo at the end making the games seem exclusive to that system. I hope Sony pumps out some commercials and other types of ads for Uncharted to raise awareness beyond the people who read about games online. Any news on this Evan?

  • We’re also getting back all of our localized assets so that we can ship Uncharted simultaneously around the world in 13 languages!

Does this mean that the release date for all versions is the same end of November?? Because you’ve stated before that there could be a time difference of a few weeks between the US version and the others.

And do you have some more info about the languages/subtitles? For example, the Dutch version is English spoken & Dutch subtitled, English/Dutch spoken or both?
I hope it keeps the original language and has subtitles!

I hope that you can answer my questions, im looking forward for the demo and finally the game :)

    Congrats from the Netherlands!
