New PS3 TV Ad Campaign

430 1

Greetings PlayStation Nation!

Like all of you, I’ve been a big fan of our new blog – but until now, I’ve been staying behind the scenes. I’m excited to share my first post here and thought that our new advertising campaign for the PS3 would be of interest to everyone. In fact, the campaign is scheduled to break this weekend in conjunction with the introduction of the new 40GB PS3 here in North America. But as a reward for being some of our most loyal fans, I wanted to get this out to all of you first.

Last year, we launched the PS3 with a campaign that become known as the “White Room” and we received a strong reaction to those ads for being provocative and demonstrating the PS3’s power. With those technology messages now firmly embedded, we wanted to move beyond the “power” message with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3. The games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear. But we need to deliver that in a way that befits the PlayStation brand. And so, beyond the brilliant HD games that the PS3 delivers, you’ll also see a big focus behind the PS3’s Blu-ray movie capability and, for the first time, you’ll see a major focus behind the PLAYSTATION Network (did I mention online gaming is free on PS3??) and the exclusive gaming content available on the PLAYSTATION Store, as well as breakthrough services like Home. As Kim noted in her recent post, with so much brewing inside the PS3, the icons and characters of the PS3 world come to life in the vivid black onyx world of the PS3 and nearly burst out of its seams.

The spots feature some of our recent and highly anticipated first-party titles including Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, as well as upcoming third-party exclusives such as Haze from Ubisoft and Metal Gear Solid 4 from Konami. I recall seeing some comments on this blog recently lamenting why we weren’t making a bigger deal out of Metal Gear. Well, get ready for a steady diet, because Metal Gear Solid is the mother of all exclusives and we can’t wait for its release. But we’ll also feature other great PS3 games like Burnout Paradise, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008, Assassin’s Creed, Madden NFL 08 and Time Crisis 4 rounding out the genre-defining titles and breadth of a lineup that you can only find on PLAYSTATION 3.

We’re kicking off the campaign in a big way with high-impact: 60 second spots (“Universe of Entertainment”) which feature PS3’s multi-functional capabilities and really kicks off the compelling and addictive nature of this campaign.

The second is our :30 “Only On” spot showcasing some of our gorgeous 1st party titles.

More television spots are still under development and we’ll reveal them as they’re finished.

As we head into November we couldn’t be more excited. We have the 40GB PS3 “officially” launching tomorrow at a price point that will appeal to a wider audience and the 80GB PS3 which is demonstrating phenomenal sales growth since we announced the $499 price point. Add to that the inflow of great games and a PS3 brand campaign — our largest ever behind a hardware platform — and we think it’s going to be a great holiday season for PS3.

And I’d be remiss not to mention the highly-anticipated titles coming in 2008 like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto IV, Killzone 2, SingStar, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4 and of course, Home. And rest assured, we have some secrets and many new games up our sleeves for 2008 as well. We can’t wait to kick it all off!

So, we hope you like the campaign. You guys are our biggest fans and I can tell you all with complete sincerity that we work hard to earn your trust and loyalty every day. Because we know if we can meet your high expectations, you’ll tell your friends and the rest will take care of itself.

Thanks and have fun!

  • That’s nice Peter. All you need to do is release more games, secure old and new upcoming IP’s because you loose to many of them already if you ask me. Not to mention that M$ is always trying to steal those games any way possible.

Anyway just remember that releasing 80GB in EU is important!!!!

  • It would be great to see something like that in Europe too. The “This is living” ad campaign didn’t tell anything about the PS3. Please mail it too SCEE ;-)

  • I agree, use these spots in Europe, too. They are awesome. The “white room” spots didn’t do anything for me (the Lair one was good though) and I won’t even start on the “This is living” campaign.
It would save Sony some money if you ran a good campaign likt this worldwide and not have every region cook up something of their own. Again, great clips!

  • If PS3 were my product (and I own one and love mine) I’d be trying to make my ‘what it can do’ message more clear. The first spot shows the Blu-Ray logo, but most consumers are confused (at best) about HD formats.

With so many people owning HDTVs but only SD sources, and Blu-Ray being a relatively obscure brand name (crap though it is, ‘HD-DVD’ is easy to understand) you need to be less subtle than just waving the logo infront of people.

Or make sure the Blu-Ray ads run in the same break (and don’t get me started on them…).

Tell people what the console can do for them. It’s a start. But the Wii ads are so much more straightforward, and significantly less intimidating to potential family buyers (parents).

  • Hi Mr.Peter Dille,

The ads are great. The posters have mentioned what I’ve in mind.

Any way, I made a commerical video for PS3 and I’d like you to watch it.

  • Congratulations on the ads, very impressive.

    Change is coming…

  • Now thats an ad. THATS AN AD. ohmg, I just couldn’t believe what I saw. I must have watched three times before punching myself to see if I wasn’t dreaming. Peter if I would turn gay for someone it must be you xD hahahaha.

  • Yeaaaaah YeeeEAAAAAh now thats ps3!! that is [DELETED] ps3 mofos!!!!!!!!!!!! nowww all we need is FW 2.00!! comon sony we r sick of w8ing for 2.00 give it to us

  • I really like the new ads. However I think Sony should also push the new Uncharted ad as much as possible, the one featuring Massive Attack ie. cinema and TV spots. The game has mass appeal much as Tomb Raider had and is a great way to show off the console while the Uncharted ad itself is well put together and really catches the attention. Hope this opportunity to really push the PS3 and one of its showcase games is not missed.

  • Great ad. Really makes me wanna get a PS3.

  • kick ass, These ads should move some hardware!

  • Fantastic! Well done guys.

  • OMG – run those during NFL games and run the hell out of them and PS3 will have no problem selling gangbusters whatsoever.

  • Kick a$$ ad. I am not really a fan of that type of music, but it works really well here, and the ad is really action packed. Very nicely done.

My favorite part is the Warhawk flying over the PS3 like it is a landscape. Good stuff.

  • great ads….but i want to see some third party games too…

  • Those ads are perhaps some of the best playstation ads i have seen.

Any plans to bring them to the uk/eurpoe i think they would be well received here.

  • Very good, the first advert I think is especially aided by the music introducing the console. These are far better then any of the adverts we’ve seen so far, the silly ones with the female voice over were rather intimidating and the launch ones were just confusing.

  • thanks for keeping us up to date on what is going on in the sony sales department. the only option i have is watching these new commercials is via my ps3 i don’t have a pc, BUT THE COMMERCIALS WON’T PLAY ON A PS3. that’s weird this being a playstation blog. the last ratchet vid worked on the ps3, because it was a youtube vid. could you please put the future vids in a codec the ps3 can play. thank you sony. i loved the internet banner and this ad is in the same style judging from the picture i can see on my screen

  • COME ON SONY RELEASE THIS 1.94 FIRMWARE OR THE 2.0 FIRMWARE ALREADY!

THE 1.94 CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM OTHER SITE’S AND CAN UPDATE YOUR PS3 WITH A PROXY SERVER WHY ARE YOU SO SLOW WITH THIS WHY ARE YOU LETTING OTHER SITES UPDATE YOUR PS3 BEFORE YOU????????

  • Great ad

  • Great ads, and good move to focus on a few key point of the PS3 that a lot of people don’t know.

You really need you get the PS3 info out and educate the people which you are trying to do here. Tell them about the BD Player, tell them about the FREE online play, tell them about the amazing games…

    I love my PS3 !!!!!!!

  • “We’re kicking off the campaign in a big way with high-impact: 60 second spots (“Universe of Entertainment”)”

First off these are great ads for grabbing someones attention and holding it. Kudos. They are especially appealing for the more informed consumers that are likely to be responding here..

    “which feature PS3’s multi-functional capabilities”

It does a great job of showing them but not *explaining* them to the non gamer and or casual user .. there were some other videos recently that did a much better job of explaining how the pieces fit together..it had lines being drawn connecting stuff to each other I think..

Combining those ads with these would be even better IMO..these ones do the grabbing someone’s attention and the other softer ones follow up explaining what the consumer gets out of it – how it all fits together. That 1-2 punch brings the whole thing together. By combining I meant running them back to back or interspersed throughout a show..not literally mashing the ads together..that would dilute the effect of both.

” and really kicks off the compelling and addictive nature of this campaign.”

It is a great kick-off..let’s close the deal by completing the circle with the other ones. Each one has what the other one lacked..together they are more than the sum of their parts..

  • I think one of the important things to not leave out in advertising and elsewhere, is that Home is not a game as such. It a truly innovative interface for an online store and community for online games. I dont how many friends after I show them the trailer on the PS3 say thats a really creepy game. If you could somehow convey in the ads that it is a interface and not a game, I think you would have practically sold the console on that alone. So many people are looking forward to both Home and LBP that once that stuff hits, its only looking up for sony from there. TM2C ~neba

  • one word…

    WICKED!

  • It because of these ads, that I have, and love my PS3! Nice ads Sony!

  • In the past year I have educated Friends, Family, Co-workers, Bloggers and anyone showing interest exactly what is Playstation 3, much to my surprise many (average consumer) knows absolutely nothing about this high performance, well crafted electronic device, with that said this new campaigne is very welcoming. Looking forward to it.

  • Great work on the ads! I especially like how the open with the old school Playstation sound.

Here’s to hoping you tear those guys in Redmond a new one this holiday season. ! :0 )

  • Awesome. The new marketing department is an awesome team. Keep it up!

  • Whatever happened to the original ThisIsLiving.tv website? I have tried loads of times to get on there and download some of the old content (screensavers and backgrounds etc) but it seems to have been (partly) taken down. I say partly because google still have a few links to some live (but useless) pages. Please, can someone revive the content from that page?!?

  • Coolest gaming ads eva!!! lol great job.

I have a question, where are the ratchet & clank “its a wonderful world” and the heavenly sword “vengeance has never been this beautiful” being showed? Europe only?

  • That makes me happy,
    So sweet, Nice job Guys!
    Rockin!!

  • Do you guys realize the costs that are hidden from all these ads that come out?

  • Wow! Would it be possible to get an embedding method? I’d love to put these in my blog! Unbelievably cool! And “up your sleeves.” I’ve enjoyed many posts here before, but this is probably my favorite! :D

  • Oh hey! I just realized that the rumored new PSN logo was at the end of the 60 second ad!~ Sweetness. :D

  • Great ads! Way better than the ‘White Room’ ones. However, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you have to get the Playstation logo at the end of individual game commercials. Skate and Madden only show Xbox so it makes some consumers think they’re exclusive when they aren’t.

    Also, bring RUMBLE sooner!!!!!

  • AMAZING I LOVE IT! Now market the heck out of it Sony! I want to see people eat up the PS3 this holiday season.

  • Is Time Crisis 4 not a PS3 exclusive?
