New PS3 TV Ad Campaign

430 1

Greetings PlayStation Nation!

Like all of you, I’ve been a big fan of our new blog – but until now, I’ve been staying behind the scenes. I’m excited to share my first post here and thought that our new advertising campaign for the PS3 would be of interest to everyone. In fact, the campaign is scheduled to break this weekend in conjunction with the introduction of the new 40GB PS3 here in North America. But as a reward for being some of our most loyal fans, I wanted to get this out to all of you first.

Last year, we launched the PS3 with a campaign that become known as the “White Room” and we received a strong reaction to those ads for being provocative and demonstrating the PS3’s power. With those technology messages now firmly embedded, we wanted to move beyond the “power” message with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3. The games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear. But we need to deliver that in a way that befits the PlayStation brand. And so, beyond the brilliant HD games that the PS3 delivers, you’ll also see a big focus behind the PS3’s Blu-ray movie capability and, for the first time, you’ll see a major focus behind the PLAYSTATION Network (did I mention online gaming is free on PS3??) and the exclusive gaming content available on the PLAYSTATION Store, as well as breakthrough services like Home. As Kim noted in her recent post, with so much brewing inside the PS3, the icons and characters of the PS3 world come to life in the vivid black onyx world of the PS3 and nearly burst out of its seams.

The spots feature some of our recent and highly anticipated first-party titles including Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, as well as upcoming third-party exclusives such as Haze from Ubisoft and Metal Gear Solid 4 from Konami. I recall seeing some comments on this blog recently lamenting why we weren’t making a bigger deal out of Metal Gear. Well, get ready for a steady diet, because Metal Gear Solid is the mother of all exclusives and we can’t wait for its release. But we’ll also feature other great PS3 games like Burnout Paradise, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008, Assassin’s Creed, Madden NFL 08 and Time Crisis 4 rounding out the genre-defining titles and breadth of a lineup that you can only find on PLAYSTATION 3.

We’re kicking off the campaign in a big way with high-impact: 60 second spots (“Universe of Entertainment”) which feature PS3’s multi-functional capabilities and really kicks off the compelling and addictive nature of this campaign.

The second is our :30 “Only On” spot showcasing some of our gorgeous 1st party titles.

More television spots are still under development and we’ll reveal them as they’re finished.

As we head into November we couldn’t be more excited. We have the 40GB PS3 “officially” launching tomorrow at a price point that will appeal to a wider audience and the 80GB PS3 which is demonstrating phenomenal sales growth since we announced the $499 price point. Add to that the inflow of great games and a PS3 brand campaign — our largest ever behind a hardware platform — and we think it’s going to be a great holiday season for PS3.

And I’d be remiss not to mention the highly-anticipated titles coming in 2008 like Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Grand Theft Auto IV, Killzone 2, SingStar, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4 and of course, Home. And rest assured, we have some secrets and many new games up our sleeves for 2008 as well. We can’t wait to kick it all off!

So, we hope you like the campaign. You guys are our biggest fans and I can tell you all with complete sincerity that we work hard to earn your trust and loyalty every day. Because we know if we can meet your high expectations, you’ll tell your friends and the rest will take care of itself.

Thanks and have fun!

  • Sony gets head in the game with new PS3 ads

[…] reaction to those ads for being provocative and demonstrating the PS3’s power,” Dille wrote, obviously unaware of the extreme delusion of that statement. “With those technology messages […]

  • Peter,

One more question. You spoke briefly about how intensive these ads will be on TV yet only mentioned the American media. Do you have any idea if these same ads will be used for Europe?

Please make that an intensive campaign. Europe is Sony land as you know, so this would be a nice way to wake up those who still haven’t heard of the price drop as the PS3 is still called the “more” expensive machine.

    Thanks

  • Peter,
It is very good to see SONY getting aggressive with the marketing of the PS3. I have owned a PS3 for almost 11 months now and have loved my experiences with it.
It is important to note that there are HUGE steps that must still be taken to re-assert the dominance that SONY has had over the gaming industry.
Although moving many big time projects from 2007 to 2008 may seem like a dumb move, I have a feeling that the gamers are going to be overwhelmed with quality releases all throughout the year.
Dropping the price down $200 in the first year is a good thing, but it kind of sucks for people (like me) who spent $600 on the console. I’d be nice if we could get something like the free Blu-Ray movie offer or something along those lines for our customer loyalty.
Either way, great job with the ads. I’ll be looking out for them in the near future.

  • This commercial is awesome. This is probably the biggest problem you guys have had so far.Thank god you’re finally addressing it,and like I said,so far so good.Keep the advertisements coming!!If you can do it with PSP,I’m sure you can do it with PS3 as well.

  • Awesome ads! Props!

  • wow, awesome commercials. Can’t wait to see them on t.v. We needed some more ads since the ps3 launched to showcase the cool games. Now the heavy hitters are coming, this is the perfect time to bring out some great commercials. Good job, Sony.

  • I just saw the new Rachet and Clank ad on ESPN, and at the very end the voice over said,”.starting at $399″…count me as one of the soon to be new PS3 owners! Well done Sony, these ads are simple and straight to the point.

I do wish UT3 was coming out sooner, but that’s fine. There’ll be plenty of Blu-ray movies and some really good games to tie me over until the huge AAA titles come out in the next few months.

  • ^ dont even trip bro ps3 is about to kick some serious ass

  • HOLY CRAP!
    That was a Sony ad?
    *refreshes page*
    They’re back!
    Loved it!
It’s amazing(….you even snuck the free PSN in there…..and the XMB starting line. I saw that!).

You should do one for Resistance, MotorStorm and Ninja Gaiden Sigma when the 3 titles go Greatest Hits…..which should be now if you know better.

  • The “White Room” adds were great… They were subtle and put the machine’s power in the subconscious of everyone (many of whom couldn’t afford to buy them at that point anyway)…

And you couldn’t rely on games like you can with THIS new add back then… because there wasn’t a really strong exclusive line-up.

These spots take it to the next level. Great work, great music… very well done!

  • Coming into your “own” again. This is who you are and this is how you built your name and reputation in this business. Absolutely kill the competition on this outing of this current generation. I am not saying it’s going to happen overnight but rather, this time, when the opportunity presents itself, completely bury and eradicate the competition which in this case are 2 parties. Make them pay for taking your kindness for weakness! We easily defeated past and now present foes before, and because of it we did not take them seriously. Believe it or not, they tried to kill us at our weakest point! However, even in our weakest of conditions we “were” still “able to contend” with them. Now that we’re bouncing back and recovering from some major wounds inflicted on us by our competition–let’s give them a taste of their own medicine! Away with being “haughty” and “arrogant” and laughing at how “pathetic” they are “compared to us”. This is the very “attitude” that almost cost us everything. Let’s take back the “remainder” of this generation and lead a charge into the “next” generation with “Playstation” being the brand that the industry and the general public “receive” and “recognize” and “accept” as “market leader”. In short, kick their asses to the point where you instill in them the idea that besides you, there is “no other market leader” in computer entertainment and for “entertainment” for that matter. The world criticized us in the past because their hearts were, and are still close to us. We’ve gone beyond being a videogames company to now becoming an ICON at the forefront of the entertainment industry. We are statisticly the most successful company in videgames business history despite the fame and acclaim of one our competitors. With PS3 which is clearly the FUTURE, let’s lead the Playstation brand to win and conquer this generation as well as the future and upcoming generation of computer entertainment and entertainment in general.

    SONY…..
    Like. No. Other.

  • Thanks for addressing our questions and comments Peter.

If I may respectfully offer a piece of advice: when MGS4 nears release, ads for that game should be plastered all over the map–on TV, internet, billboards–everywhere.

The hype level for that game indicates that it could equal or exceed sales of the original Metal Gear Solid and MGS2—6 to 7 million worldwide.

It’s too bad that the game was delayed, but when it arrives it has the potential to drive Playstation 3 install base like few other titles.

Most hardcore gamers still on the fence about PS3 are just waiting for that game.

  • I have to admit Mr. Peter “what da” Dille, that this ad made me want to purchase another PS3. This will def push most, if not all the PS2 owners into buying a PS3.

I love the song, how it says “you seen how seeing is believing”; which to me it said “You played PS1 and PS2, you know what we are about”.

You guys are crazy. In a wonderful amazing way. This ad was ridiculous. I had chills running all over my body when I seen this ad (over and over again).

I was waiting on games, but seeing the games like Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, Ratchet & Clank, and Uncharted out for this winter is bananas.

One thing Mr. “What the Dille Yo”, is What are Sony’s thoughts on bringing back “Legacy Of Kain Soul Reaver”.

And can we please have some more information on SOCOM, you guys forget that THIS GAME reaches the 3rd person shooter gamers. I believe it is the best 3rd person shooter to date, so why so hush-hush?

  • By the way i meant SOCOM CONFRONTATION, and I will actually go out tonight and buy my brother his own 40gb PS3. He doesn’t live with me, and always plays my PS3, or the one my parents bought my niece and nephew. So because of this ad, he is getting a PS3 today rather than X-mas. (also i was thinking of getting him a nintendo wii, since they have NES games we grew up late nights playing, but I forgot about Sony’s line-up of games like Legacy of Kain, which to me says “SONY, STOP MAKING NOISE ABOUT gtaIV, MGS4, and others that are multi, we already know, MAKE NOISE ABOUT GAMES YOU OWN, HAVE OWNED, WILL OWN.!!!!

  • the6one that is a little overzealous.

But I too hope Sony does well. Actually I hope they do not just do well, but win over a majority of the market.

    this much

  • srry, i meant to make the space alot bigger, about the length of all the comments. (no sarcasm)

  • Down ass commercials. Preety good. to bad i watch mex tv and not american

  • Its about time. I like these a lot. Im so sick of seeing the other company ads. I wanna play games, not “jump”… LOL

    Anyway, where’s firmware 2.0???????

  • I just saw the Blue Ray commercial for Cars and at the end it says “on Blue Ray players and Playstation 3” That’s awesome, let’s parents know about the PS3 Blue Ray player. I’ve watched these videos over and over. So awesome. I wanna see more.

  • I just want to say that you guys are doing a great job. I really appreciate the feedback that you guys are providing the playstation community with and I absolutley love this blog. This ad just makes me want to stand up and laugh in the faces of all of the PS3 nay-sayers.

However, I am a bit concerned about Europe. You guys are ahead there right now and I would like to see Sony pull away from MS in Europe, so I hope to hear that they receive a similar ad campaign and you guys get marketing exclusives for PES, and you push that price drop too! I am also glad to hear that MGS4 is going to receive some excellent marketing, great job!

Now Mr. Dille, when you mention Assassin’s Creed, Burnout, and other multiplat titles, are you guys co-marketting those multiplat games to empahsize that they are on PS3, to increase sales of the PS3 version? Or did you guys get a marketing exclusive on those games? Will the only TV ads for those games feature the PS3? or will there be ads for those games that empahsize their multiplatform nature running as well?

  • Peter loved the spots. Please release these in other countries like here in Australia as well! My only real concern and gripe with Sony is how you’re handling the BC issue. Either your intentionally ignoring it to hype the 40GB to take advantage of the holiday season with a more competitive cheaper model, or your totally out of touch with your userbase and how much PS2 BC is IMPORTANT to us gamers. Some of us even rely on it. While this ad campaign is great, I hope next year you’ll remember those fans of Playstation out there who have yet to purchase a PS3 don’t want a 40GB i.e one without BC and are waiting for a price drop in order to purchase one that DOES have BC. Thanks for listening. ;)

I also think you should try making a “movie style” trailer for MGS4 and consider releasing it in the cinema.

  • Peter we need these advertisement here in Australia too. Frankly the only ad you will here PS3 in is an internet service provider. Come on Australia pas $650 fr the 40GB and $917 for the 60GB. I mean there is huge profit out of that, you should focus there more.

  • Wow those are great ads.
