Firmware Update (v2.00)

787 1

Hi everyone. Here’s a preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (2.00) scheduled to release within the next few days. This update contains features that will allow you to receive news directly from us on everything PlayStation, enhance the way you access and organize your media, and allow you to customize your XMB in new ways.

Here’s a closer look at the new features:

You’ll notice this icon in the Network category of the XMB. This is the Information Board.

informationboardlogo

Once activated, you’ll notice scrolling headlines in the upper right-hand corner of your screen. We’ll be delivering the latest news on new games, PLAYSTATION Store updates, hardware, accessories and lots more through the Information Board. Click on the Information Board icon and you’ll be able to see all of the headlines and click through for more detail. The headlines and associated stories will be updated on a regular basis. You can choose not to display the Information Board, but you never know what you might miss, so I’d recommend keeping it on.

We’ve added a nice enhancement to Remote Play called Remote Start, to use Remote Play locally or from a Wi-Fi hotspot, you needed to make sure that your PS3 was on. With Remote Start this is no longer necessary. As long as your PS3 is in standby mode, you’ll be able to turn your PS3 on remotely via the PSP. You can then use Remote Play to access media on your PS3, and when you’re finished you can put your PS3 back into standby mode.

Another feature we’ve added with this update is the ability to set themes on your PS3. Themes will change the whole look of your XMB; the background, icons, and in some cases sounds on your XMB will completely change. We will be providing themes on PlayStation.com and through the PLAYSTATION Store. Once you have downloaded a theme, under Settings go to Theme Settings, select Theme and then choose a theme to display or install a new theme. We are also providing the ability for you to get creative and make your own original themes.

We’ve also added a new way to organize your photos and music on the PS3 – you can now create custom playlists for all of your music and photos.

Finally, regular readers of this blog may have noticed that I’m using a new avatar. You will see that logo above on your XMB representing the new PLAYSTATION Network category. You’ll find the PLAYSTATION Store and Account Management in this category.

We’ve added several other features in this update. I’ll soon be back with more details with a quick video demo of some of the new features.

As always thanks for all of your support and feedback.

  • I’d like to see a Information Multiple option like the Copy and Delete Multiple ones. That way if we want to edit the Album info on photos or music for sorting we can do it with ease. No way am I editing hundreds of photos 1 by 1.

I really like sort feature for Games now. I’m using Game, App, and Demo as my albums now.

  • I really don’t get all the fuss over this xmb in game thing if I really need to receive or send a message while I’m playing a game(something I never really encourage) I have e-mail(pc is hooked up to my lcd) phone The front freaking door why do I need to xmb access to do this. Music! On the pc or mp3 Clock how about looking at the wall. Maybe I’m just old all seems a little irrelevant to me. I just want to play good games and from what I’ve seen lately it looks like I’ll get my wish.

  • I think the new scrolling headlines feature is slowing down the system whenever it loads up, and this is annoying when I am trying to access any of the XMB features. It even crashed on me once… any experience with this, you guys?

  • Eric Lempel said: “…this update does include valuable features that consumers have been asking for – such as the Remote Start functionality. Personally, I’m looking forward to using this feature as I’m frequently on the road – and I know a lot of you are too.”

Eric, you made this update just for yourself? Nobody needs “Remote Start functionality”.

    >>>>>> GIVE US XMB or FIRE ERIC!!

  • Couldn’t you show some details about the development of the In-Game XMB?

A possible release date? How complete the development is? Has it EVEN started? :(

    More details please.

  • @NAZAR

  • In a year you’ll be trying to trade your 360 back for a PS3. You think they’ll get anywhere with their tiny DVDs and [DELETED] processor? When they start actually making GOOD games, there’s no way the 360 is going to be able to handle them without having to switch between 10 discs while playing. Yeah, Sony got off to a slow start, so did 360 when it came out, but since they were the only next-gen system out at the time, no one was complaining. Yes Sony is trying to catch up, but that’s because they started about a year behind; that’s completely understandable. You can’t possibly expect them to have caught up with a year of development and games at the time of release. If you think that, you’re an idiot, plain and simple. Yes, there are features I wish were in there, but you know what? PS3 isn’t going anywhere fast. We WILL get the features eventually. If the system has a 10 year life cycle, what’s a couple months wait to get some features? What’s the big deal? What is it with these people and their lack of patience. I’m just glad Sony is heading in the right direction. It’s hard to win a race when you start in last place, but stick with it, and they will come out on top. They always do.

As for the people complaining about the loss of exclusives. Not exactly Sony’s fault there…it’s more up to the game developers wanting to make more money by releasing games on more than one platform. If they could release it for PS3, Xbox and PC, why wouldn’t they? If they only release it for PS3, they are only making 1/3 of the profit they possibly could be making, especially with big games such as GTA4. Yeah it would be nice to have it as an exclusive, but honestly what difference would it make to you personally? You buy the game and play it, that’s not going to change. And they hardly lost ALL of their exclusives. Uncharted, MGS4, Final Fantasies, Killzone 2, Ratchet and Clank…those are reason enough to buy a PS3 in my opinion, and by the time those are released, Xbox will probably be under and trying to develop and release another new system to make up for the fact that they shot themselves in the foot by using their current disc format which will REALLY limit the size of games they can have. It may not seem like a big deal right now, but in 5 years when absolutely astounding games are being replaced for PS3 that will actually be using it to its full potential, there’s no way in hell Xbox is going to be able to keep up. Stop getting mad at Sony. Be patient. Calm down. You made the right choice, and a crappy firmware release shouldn’t make you think otherwise.

  • The fact that Sony performes these update is of course great!

But.. the two mean features that justify the 2.0 statement are delayed. ie. In-game XMB en better video support.

    Why??

  • Note: I must also show my respect to Eric for putting himself on the line like this ánd actually responding in this blog to the comments that are made.

  • HI for me The firmware 2.0 is Bugged

She’s wake up Alone after activate the remote psp function.

The PS3 are in stand by mode turn on and off and on and off

  • Everyone keeps screaming about XMB but to be honest I don’t see what all the fuss is about. I can make a phone call, text, or chat with someone out of the game via the PS3 if need be. I’m more concerned with the current advertised capabilities of the PS3 being less than par. The web browser is so out of date that it borders on unusable and other functions within the machine are incomplete.

One of the reasons that I forked up the extra cash to purchase a PS3 was to remove the need of having my family keep the laptop on the coffee table all day long. Sony advertised the capability of hooking up a keyboard and mouse and having everything you need including internet right through the PS3. However, the reality is that the flash driver is out of date, streaming media cannot be watched, and the basic engine of the web browser is so poor that the large majority of websites simply can’t be viewed. Additionally the file structure that the PS3 utilizes makes storing data on the machine cumbersome. Add to that the inability of the PS3 to support many of the most common file structures such as pdf’s, some types of MPEG, etc, and the machine really feels like an incomplete product.

I would be more than happy if Sony would just shore up the existing functionality of the current system before trying to add new functionality that may or may not be stable. As an electrical engineer and a product manager, I know that a well polished product with fewer features that work seamlessly is a much more power product than one that does everything but poorly.

  • After installing 2.00 and setting up my remote play with the PS…..my PS3 took a life of it’s own.

The damn thing keeps turning on by itself…WTF.

I had to disable the option to turn on the PS3 remotely to make it stop.

The time Sony spent on this worthless broken feature, could have prioritized the “in game XMB access”.

But then again… I bet that Sony is having hard time getting that right also because it was not planned from the beginning..

    LOL…. what a JOKE

  • OK For the remote trun on problem is cause of my routeur

  • Love the themes.

Animated backgrounds and icons for themes should be something you add in the future.

Also, the ability to display the default flowing ribbon over any custom wallpaper should be an option, with the ribbon distorting the background image as it flows. I love the look of the ribbon, but want custom backgrounds and themes too. :(

  • If we have to choose between ingame messaging and ingame music, I say we choose in game music, the fact that you couldn’t message from in game was always a nice possible excuse to have to ignore the less pleasurable conversee’s.

Just my opinion on the matter… but hey, I’m sure a ton of people would rather have messaging, me personally I’d love in game music to breath new life into my games again.

  • Sony needs to work on the ps1 and ps2 backward compatibility. Ps1 and ps2 games look horrible on the ps3. What’s wrong Sony don’t make me regret ever buying the ps3. I never thought Microsoft could do better than you and I’m the type of person that hate Xbox to a 100% but if things keep going like this people are going to start jumping to the other side and that will be a complete failure for you. Update 1.90 had a good video quality for ps2 and ps1 games but this late updates suc……. We still don’t have xmb in game. The ps3 store is so poor. And this new update was done for nothing because people don’t really care about how the background looks. After this update the ps3 feels slower, you need to release something to upgrade the internal memory or something. So much for the cell processor that cost billions of dollars and I don’t see anything good about it. I never thought I would be upset with Sony. I’m the type of person that like Playstation so much that I bought 1 ps1, 2 psp, 2 ps2 and 1 ps3 and have over 200 games including all systems. But I think I won’t be there for ps4 if it ever comes out. That if what happened to Sega doesn’t happened to Sony.

  • Somebody wanna tell me why X-box fanboys are still trying to sell us 360s? It’s not a bad console but not a patch on the PS3. I’m pretty annoyed the in-game XMB is still missing but it’s not enough to convince me to fork out for Microsoft’s faulty equiptment (return rate of 30%…).

Anyways, I’m confident Sony will endevour to provide the in-game XMB as it solves every issue I’ve ever had with the system; potentially allowing you to send messages, surf the net and play music whilst in a game. Which would be awesome!

  • @755
Eric Lempel didn’t put himself in the line of fire.
He posted one coment that said “we never promised ingame XMB” and then he went home.
He is as bad as the update

  • After downloading the update, I played my PS3 the next day and found that the PS3 started to freeze. I had downloaded the PES 2008 demo from the european playstation store and it froze before the game even started. In addition, I recently purchased Call of Duty 4 and found that I could not play any online games. In terms of split screen, the PS3 would freeze during loading.

The Playstation 3 is a reliable console, but the freezing issues destroy the experience, please try to find an explanation for these issues since they ruin the experience.

    Thanks

  • I dont think it was a bad update but still almost a year in, we are just getting playlist and really not much else I’m starting to think we may not get in game XMB until the end of the year or 1Q 08 but we will see.

  • whenever I have the option to have your PSP turn on your Ps3 for remote play enabled the Ps3 will just keep turning itself on and off every 5 minutes.
Anyone else having this problem too?

  • wow sony you are retarded. no in game xmb? do you live under a rock or do numbers and letters confuse you?

  • Guys,
I’ve imported my machine from Japan. On my machine, the Info Board will not work when my console is set to the English language.

Please allow the IB to work in other languages.

    Thanks!

  • @720; well you are really badly informed.. does nobody tell you anything?.. ok for the last time.. In game xmb is possible…. Sony gave that option to game developers… THEY don’t use it..

@782; you need the right network to.. is it on an EU/US account?

  • I have two accounts (Asia/US), and the info bar displays notices from the Asian store on both of them (I live in the Maldives). So it might be scanning our IP and system language settings before displaying messages.

  • Please, please, please hurry up and fix AVC stutters and MPEG2 (files now show as 20min max length!!!!) over DLNA/UPNP network. This is driving me mad :(

I am very pleased you’ve added DD5.1 and 6CH AAC support when playing files in XMB, but the above problems outweigh these.

Any chance of encoding 6CH AAC files as DD5.1 “on the fly” for those of us not using a receiver with HDMI, so we can still get 5.1 over optical from 6CH AAC?

How about 1080p24 support when playing video files in XMB?

Also please add .mkv container support. Not bothered about subs, chapters etc and all those extra things that Matroska can support, just basic playback would be great for starters :)

  • Sony can you just add XMB and in game music playability please. That would make the ps3 owners very happy and attract costumers to PSN.
