Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune Demo Update

423 1

Hi, since I’m new to the blog I wanted to first introduce myself. I am the line producer on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and I work with Naughty Dog on a day-to-day basis and have been working with the team since Crash Team Racing.

We are pleased to see that there is so much interest out there in the Uncharted demo, and wanted to provide a quick update.

As many of you in Europe and Japan may have already learned, today’s demo is currently only available on the North American PlayStation Store, and will only work on PS3 units in that territory. As you may already know, North America is the first region to launch Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (Monday, November 19th), and we wanted to be sure that we gave our North American PS3 players the opportunity to try out the demo prior to launch. Other territories are currently putting the finishing touches on the localization aspects of the Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune demo, and will release it in their respective PlayStation Stores in due course.

Unfortunately when attempting to download the demo, our friends in PAL regions or Japan may have encountered a bug in which you are asked to insert a disc. Please ignore this prompt and accept our apologies.

Thanks again for your interest in the game, we hope that those of you who do get a chance to play it get a taste for what we hope will become an action-adventure classic on the PS3.

  • Excellent demo …looking forward to Monday!

  • Sold! Awesome demo ND. Can’t wait to shovel my money towards people who deserve it.

Hope the rest of the world can sample it soon. Good luck EU. I’m sure ND will get you taken care of soon.

  • @ broken haiku

    best of lucks.

  • Are the screen tearing issues corrected in the final version? The demo tears badly if you pan the camera to fast in many areas.

  • this is the problem

you guys created a big hype train about this demo, just to release and THEN say wo wo wait a minute, this is only for america. YOU need to realize how big this blog is and that not just americans read it. whatever you say about something new coming to PS3 you need to start putting a tag on it saying whether its for only the US or whatever. This is a messed up situation because it is a sony exclusive power house title. People wanna know WHY would you release it with a bug like that or WHY would you region lock it. Also, all this talk about localizing the language is bull. A demo is about gameplay, if i want the story i can go to the website. Also in japan most everything, entertainment wise, is here in english anyway. Most times you just slap on some sub titles, but for a demo you don’t need to do that. Most people will watch the movie just to see how it looks, after that they skip it every time they play it. And once again, what happened to the japanese demo you had at TGS. anyway, whatever, just start realizing that you are talking to the world on this blog, not just america, or change the quote at the top to just “for american fans”.

  • @ 156
    Are you usingan older lcd?

It sounds like an effect that you can get from one of thoose.

  • This is not a sole issue about a demo. Lair has been released in the us for months gets released in eu today. Its all very well saying different territories produce the games. but the same goes on xbox 360 where almost every game is released on the same week in eu and usa. Ps3 sells more units in eu than it does in usa and it out sells the xbox 360 in eu as well. Show some appreciation Sony or things could change

  • Thanks for clearing things up Sam! Your studio isn’t only making top quality games, but you guys have a good heart and communicate in a good way. I am a European, and yes, I am disappointed that I can’t play the Uncharted demo. It’s my number 1 favorite game coming out this year and I would really like to play it, especially because we have to wait until december 9th to play the game. I think that the European gamers aren’t really ticked of on you guys (Naughty Dog) and on Sony America. I think they are really getting ticked of with Sony Europe. Sony hasn’t been treating Europe that well. We got the PS3 6 months later, we had to pay more for the PS3 and we got a less backwards compatibility. After the launch we get games weeks to months later then the US, we get much less content in de EU store, most of the things are more expensive in our store and we have to wait longer for content in our store. For example, we got the Ratchet and Clank demo 3 weeks later then the US store. The funny thing was that the demo on the US store was already localized for the different European languages. So it’s mainly Sony Europe that is ticking the European gamers of, not you Naughty Dog. There is a lot of love for Naughty Dog in Europe, Jak and Daxter is a very populair franchise in Europe and the Europeans are really looking forward to Uncharted. I really hope that you can fix the bug and the we Europeans and offcourse our Japanse friends can also play the Uncharted demo. For the Europeans bashing Naughty Dog en Sony America, stop it you guys. Our problems are with Sony Europe, not with the US and not with Naughty Dog. Thanks again for clearing things up Sam and I hope the bug will be fixed. Congrats with a great time, Naughty Dog again delivered a great game. Looking forward to playing it!

    Greatings,

    Wouter, Europe, The Netherlands

  • again. I dont mind that the demo has a bug or even is region locked. but now I dont know if i will be able to play the US full Version which i preordered month ago or do I need to order the japanese one now. …..

  • The PSN is really the biggest failure of Sony. They decision to divide the store into regional ones may have seem good on paper initially: Less of a load on one big server cluster and people would feel that they got that personal care. Heck no. At the moment anyone not living in Japan or the US feel rather cheated. The US store gets a plethora of movie trailers, game trailers, wallpapers, game demos, extras for games – you name it. Most of this either get several month delays to get to the European store, and some never make it at all. Although it is starting to get better than the initial days where the European PSN felt like a Russian store in the 80s, having us throw ourselves at the mercy of whatever scraps fell of the table, many of us resorted to created fake US and Japan accounts just to have something to download. Purchasing things on these stores isn’t downright easy either because it requires a credit card for the right country, which although it _can_ be bypassed, it’s not really recommendable to put a fake address on ones credit card details, but people do it and this is how far Sony have driven their users. It has gone so far that downloading from the US PSN has become more or less standard behaviour for European PS3 owners which really just proves how poor the system works, and now that Naughty Dog put out a region locked demo, enough just became enough. The excuses so far have been that we non-English natives need localisation of our demos/games, (which doesn’t at all account for some games or demos never making it off the US/Japan store at all). This is just plain ridiculous. We know perfectly well what “Press Start” means, it’s not like a game demo is rocket science. It’s bad enough we pay almost twice the price for the games that the US does, but you’re not only walking a thin line here, you’re patting us on the head. Do you really consider us that stupid?

It’s time for you to rethink things. In the meantime – go sit on the Naughty (Dog) stool.

  • Could anyone from SCEA or Naughty Dog confirm whether the demo supports the new DualShock 3 controller which comes out this weekend in Asia? Hopefully, you guys can solve the problem with the demo and we can all enjoy this masterpiece and us lucky DS3 owners can play it with rumble too.

  • thanks for this update

  • Very disappointed…

While I know this game is going to be amazing, it’s so frustrating for the one and only game I’ve been truly excited for on PS3 for 2007 to have a locked demo. Absolutely typical of Sony’s infuriating wont for shooting themselves in the foot.

I’m a huge fan of Sony consoles and games, but please, stop it with the inept bumbling already! :)

  • So many tears flow from the comments section of this blog on a daily basis…

  • I’m surprised at another Blunder. The positive PR that could have been created from this demo release globally has been lost. What were you thinking??? It can’t be very many owners that know how to setup us accounts etc. Hopefully the UK store will have the US demo in a matter of hours…..somehow i think not though!

  • SONY I HAVE JUST 1 WORD FOR YOU GUYS>>>>AMATEURS

  • Hear me out Sony!

I have been — and still am — a big fan of PLAYSTATION living in Istanbul, Turkey. After having spend more than 1000 USD for a PAL PS3 (which I could have bought the parallel imported NTSC version for half the price), I was utterly disappointed to learn that there was no support for PS Store in Turkey (On a side note: There is a hug PLAYSTATION culture reigning in my country. We, Turks, are very dedicated fans.).

So, guess what? Like most of my comrades from Europe, I opened up a US account and so far I had been extremely happy that such a bypass is allowed by Sony for us “unfortunate” users. I also buy import games from US, since they do come out earlier and are much cheaper than PAL versions here, which cost more than 100 USD.

In short, as a dedicated fan, I do spend a lot of money — willingly — to satisfy my videogaming hobby.

Therefore, I really do hope that:

    1) Sony continues to support outside-the-US regions through the PS Store,
    2) Region-free games do continue to come out in the future,
    3) Naughty Dog team posts a region-free version or a downloadable patch bypassing the regionlock of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune on the US PS Store ASAP,
    4) Last but most important, full retail version of Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune be region-free for all fans from around the world to enjoy.

Looking at the comments before me, it is very clear a lot of people do share my beliefs and concerns. It would be a very un-Sony thing now to ignore such a loud and clear voice.

I’m a proud user of PLAYSTATION and a dedicated fan of its CULTURE. Please do not let us down, Sony and its partners.

  • well I know there are ppl around at sony that really work hard to please the community.

but in the end… sony you have now idea what you are doing. if only one or two guys would really be interested in us – the community – you would never pull that much BS.

first the update – what on earth are you thinking? this is suicide! any man that spent 10min on the net would have known that YOU HAVE TO bring ingame xmb with 2.0 – you had better waited longer.

it is not hard to please your fans – just listen to them for god sakes! but all you are doing lately is like shooting yourself in the feets! WHY? are you soooo ignorant or just plain dumb?

who on earth at sony is pulling this stuff? those guys need to be fired ASAP!

don’t you have enough troubles? do you really need another bomb each day? does it get any dumber?

pull your fingers SONY or it will be to late…

  • Nephlabobo: Sorry, but Kotaku are – as normal – wrong on this one. If this were a deliberate region locking then you’d get a message telling you that, not a different error depending on whether there’s a disc in the drive or not. It’s a bug – and it’s a bug of a kind we’ve seen in previous demos as well, just not in the same fatal way.

Mana Knight: I disagree. Even UK-developed games don’t always come out over here first – sometimes we even have to wait longer for those. Japanese developed games are almost universally released in the US before Europe – except in those rare cases where SCEA drop the ball completely on clearing games for release. Hardware is always later and more expensive here.

  • this is just racist
you know what naughty dog you can put your game you know where.
i know now that im not going to buy nothing.
    from you anymore.

  • You people need to seriously stop whining. It’s not like it’s the full game. It’s a demo. It’s 10 minutes of your life. It’s not the end of the world. Chances are, you were planning on getting the game anyway, so missing the demo isn’t that big of a deal. If not, then go rent it when it comes out.

“OHHH I CAN’T PLAY A 10 MINUTE DEMO I AM BOYCOTTING THE ENTIRE COMPANY”

For all you people demanding the demo, stop acting like the company owes you something. They didn’t have to release a demo in the first place. It’s not like they are required to release a demo and have every single potential buyer try it out before they were allowed to release the game. Most games don’t even have demos, do you boycott those companies too for not being able to play it for 10 minutes before you buy it? No, in fact, you probably don’t even think twice about buying it when there’s no demo, and you certainly don’t spam the blog with complaints and demands that every single game release a demo. People are so impatient these days. It’s a video game. You’re not going to die if you don’t play it for 10 minutes, so chill the hell out.

  • im not talking about boycotting this is about
    a world war

  • A world war is breaking out over the non-release of a 10 minute video game demo? That would be something…

  • Darkfiber, it is not about not being able to play the demo that bothers us.

It is the simple fact that by region-locking the demo, Sony is alienating its user-base in Europe and Asia… Games are region-free, so why region-lock the demo now?

Moreover, you do not need to be so arrogant to say that it is 10 minutes of our lives, because you are not in our shoes. You got your demo and played it, which we did not. Am I wrong?

  • I feel for those in countries outside the US. Just played the demo and all I can say it, “Wow!” I can’t think of very many games out there with better controls than this game. Like many have said, it is Tomb Raider with really smooth Gears of War controls and AMAZING graphics. I’m a little worried that the gameplay will get repetitive in the full-length game though. Nonetheless, this could be the PS3 smash-hit that we’ve been waiting for. Can’t wait to buy this game!

Blog. • Jesus Christ, Heaven forbid a demo on the US Store doesn’t work on a system meant for use outside that country… I know it’s a bummer but it ain’t the end of the world. Relax, guys.

  • Yes, I played it, then I beat it, then it was over. Yeah, it was fun, but it was only a demo. It’s not a life or death thing. I really wouldn’t care either way if I wasn’t able to play it. I realize your frustration, but there’s a difference with being upset about the principle of not being able to play it simply because of where you live, and being upset with simply not being able to play it when you want to, and throwing a hissy fit like a 5 year old child, which is what the majority of people on here are doing. But again, it’s not like you’re never going to be playing this game, regardless of where you live. Be patient, there’s no point in getting all upset over it. People are making a much bigger deal about this than it actually is.

  • And the demo was for NORTH AMERICA, not just for the U.S. There are other countries in that continent, you know…Americans aren’t the only ones who are able to play this.

  • C’mon Sam, give us fans some good news!!! We are getting impatient.

  • I can’t wait for some more information. It would be cool if we could download some kind of patch/BR-D-crack for the demo instead of having to redownload the whole thing. Oh, and SCEA should put a clear warning on the ps-store.

  • Naughty Dog Poo

  • So usa has advantage over europeans… i’ll remember that in a near future.
    Higly dissapointed, Naughty Dog.

  • relax why should we relax we are being leftout and why did sony make such a gigantic [DELETED]. i mean if this happend with te demo of lets say conan or need for speed nobody would give a [DELETED], It’s because sony was hyping this demo and the whole world was really looking forward to test this game. This only shows that Sony because of its frequent sloppyness is not really up to the task of reclaiming there lost number 1 position in the game business.

  • Thank you for the PAL error. Its bad enough that I cannot buy games like Everday shooter without an american credit card. (you do not seem to need my money) but the useless 1.2Gb have been annoying (because I want the game).

Oh and finally enable Pan&Scan for 16:9 LCD TVs Death to black bars.

  • i just hope that the full game will be region free :)

  • Well I can understand why you locked it but please don’t region lock games please.

I am pretty certain that everyone here isn’t prepared to buy another PS3 because of region locks. It is the main reason I picked up a PS3 and PSP, the games are region free and I pick up games which don’t come out in the UK. I love the games that get released on the PlayStation Consoles but please don’t region lock the full games!

I can understand you wish to release the demos of Uncharted in their respectable regions near their retail releases but I really really don’t want to buy another PS3. It cost me £390 for a PS3 and I am really strapped on cash right now so you will get a lot of hate if region lock is implemented.

Anyways, I’ll pick up the local demo when its released. I look forward to playing Uncharted!

  • Darkfiber: Technically, ‘American’ can refer to people from the whole area, not just the US. From the American Heritage Dictionary:

    American n.
    1. A native or inhabitant of America.
    2. A citizen of the United States.
    3. American English.

Note the distinction between definitions #1 and #2.

  • I agree with most comments on here. With the lack of quality games available my son and I eagerly anticipated playing the demo yesterday – so disappointing seeing a 5 year old burst in to tears! In Europe we always seem to be waiting longer than our neighbours across the pond. I’ve had my PS3 since launch but am now starting (reluctantly!) with my mates that I should have bought a 360 just for content. Please Sony don’t make us wait I’m fed up of just polishing my PS3!

  • “Well I can understand why you locked it”

You can? I can’t. Because they want to annoy customers? Because they didn’t backrape european customers enough with high prices, delays, worse BC, value packs instead of price cuts, empty PSN stores …

No honestly I think Sony is in some areas very fair to their customers no points in the online store( great plus over XLBA) great media capabilites. But the guy who thought to lock this demo was a good idea should be removed immediately. How braindead do you have to be to not foresee the reaction?

  • i bet those RACIST americans in the Naughty Dog team are laughing their ass off while reading this comments

  • @darkfiber #183

you d/l’d the demo and played it thru, but you really not bothered?. so why did you bother?. I wasted My time cos i could’nt play it. If you cant understand others ppl’s frustration then ur a typical “american”, and by american i mean someone from that continent, even the southern part.

  • R&C TOD demo was available on the US store before realease and I could play that, and the game was realeased in the US first, so why changed for Uncharted?. Serious gamers have ordered their copy from the states already cos its cheaper and you can get it earlier. I’ll be playing the Full Game before the EU demo is out, unless My game arrives with region lock on it.

  • Hi there!
    Im am from Brazil…

THE DEMO OF THE GAME IS PERFECT…

It left me with more desire to play the complete version.

    Thanks for this fascinating game..

  • Its not fair why do you guys get PLAY TV first?

  • Thanks for the quick update Sam.

  • Erm, okay, I’ll throw my tuppenth worth in. Grrr, Hiss, Fking Boooo!

Yep, I’m a UK user and got all excited, then slightly disapointed. Perhaps this is a ploy to make us shout. No such thing as bad publicity you know! And the more people shouting that they want something, might translate into sales when it becomes available. I’m sure that’s not the strategy, but it might work that way none the less.

Okay NaughtyDog, consider that a wiggly finger in your direction. Now stop reading this and get back to work. You have the rest of the world to please yet!
