Video of New Research Conducted with PlayStation Eye

Most of you probably already know about the launch of the PlayStation Eye, and hopefully you’re as excited as we are here in PlayStation R&D. By the time products launch, our contribution is usually long past, but this time we wanted to join the fun. So we thought we’d give you an exclusive first glimpse at some of our new research that uses PS Eye.

We grabbed our lab camcorder and filmed some tech demos created by newcomer Anton Mikhailov (he’s the guy playing games in the videos). Anton has been using PS Eye to let users add their own content into games. So far, he’s focused on simple, familiar games (like lunar lander and tank battle) that he can code for PS3 in a day or so. These games are pretty old school, but they become amazingly fun again when you get to add your own content. And when the PS3 adds physics to your content, things become even more fun! (why does everyone keep mentioning Little Big Planet?)

Check out the videos. We filmed them without cuts so you could see how easy it is to add your own content.

Note that these are tech demos, not products. We just wanted to let you see one of our crazy ideas of how the PS Eye might be used in the future. Anton or I will be answering questions, so let us know what you think!

  • Hmm, this may be far fetched but the playstation eye is pretty much that, an electronic eye of sorts. It would be pretty sick if you guys can make games that adjust to the player’s feelings. Like if he/she is smiling or sad or bored, the game will “change” so to speak to enhance or improve the experience for the player based upon what it detects.
    Just a thought…..

  • Wow, awesome stuff. To bad my drawing skills are limited to stick figures :D

  • Time for the ultimate Line Rider on PS3…

  • Amazin stuff. I really hope you guys can throw together a $5 PSN game at some point for the eye!

  • I really like the direction your taking with the PS Eye. Keep developing it and you can get a really good game from it.

  • AWESOME! This is the reason I want a PS Eye!!

  • Why don’t you guys release these tech demos for free, then make commercial games out of the if they grow popular?

It would be really nice fanservice for you to release more of this stuff, and would sell more cameras, too.

  • Do you guys have any idea how this would transform the way you play games!

    That’s just too cool!!!

Imagine what Hideo Kojima could do with something like this incoorporated into MGS4.

    That’s just crazy!!!!

  • ok, now I want an PS Eye. Sony, you’re doing us all proud

  • I have some potentially good ideas for PS Eye that I would like to share with Sony. It has the potential to attract a whole new demographic to the PS3 platform. Does Sony have any avenue for members of the public to communicate ideas other than an open public forum?

  • you guys do know you just stumbled on to the next killer ground breaking genre defining application that could redefine interactive gaming as a whole.

sure its raw but if you think Master Chief or Mario is an icon you could whore Kratos or Ratchet or even Nariko.

Just look at the tank game he drew a simple little board now imagine him drawing a simple little forest drop down ratchet and clank or jack and daxter and have them go head to head or against thousands of enemies

I’m thinking quick easy action/ fighter oriented Mario party type games using Sony Computer Entertainment characters

^million dollar idea i should be payed for it.

  • Great job guys, we wouldn’t mind having these “experiments” as a PSN download able game. Just a quick question, does the Playstation calculate the physics on the fly? Or does it have to be set by the user?

  • Oh and big ups for you guys and Sony for truly trying to create “user” generated content.

Please add echo cancellation to video chat on ps3. my dad shelled out like $500 bucks looking forward to using video chat and the feedback and echo is horrible no matter where you place the Eye. Can’t believe none of this was actually tested”

Feedback and echo is usually caused by your external speakers being turned up too loud. It’s the same thing if you were to call into a live radio station and you have the station on in the background they tell you to turn it down because of the echo and feedback. Try adjusting your speakers volume settings and see if that helps.

  • Now that’s thinking outside of the box, amazing stuff.

It’s almost like those static cling scenes I had as a kid. You know where you can have a scene from a Spiderman comic with a bunch of characters that you can place throughout the scene.

This would be great if you could make your own animated movies using this tech, complete with the ability to add voice and sound effects for characters and objects in your scenes.

  • thats pretty sweet! As an artist I would ovet to see what it would do to some of my drawings. I have done over 150 peices so this would be interesting to use some of mine. Cant wait until its released to the public if and when that ever happens! Pretty cool stuff. :)

  • I don’t have a Playstation Eye yet but I’m sure I’ll get one. I just hope it gets better support than the Eye Toy did. It was great but hardly anyone used it in games. Maybe with the PS3’s extra power developers can start adding support for it. I can think of lots of ways to use a camera in games.

  • Wow that is so cool! I’d buy that tank game right now! :)

PS Eye has HUGE potential, I can’t wait to see what else you guys come up with! Keep it coming! :D

  • simply amazing… I bought the eye a couple weeks ago and have been waiting for something like this. please release some kind of software that utilizes what you just showed us. its awesome. can’t wait to see what you guys think of next.

    Cheers,
    Lh

  • Hey thanks for the videos. I love the tank video. If you can have the option of drawing in attachments, we’ll one awesome little game here.

Looking forward to your stuff, and keep in touch!

  • It whould be sooooo cool if this will be integrated it into Little Big Planet!

  • When Sony decided to add motion controls in the last minute, people said that Sony was ripping of Nintendo’s Wiimote… I think this proves that the PS3’s got some ORIGINAL ideas after all. Because this rocks, no it kicks ass!

I might, just get a PSEye… this is revolutionary, it brings the Game 3.0 concept to life man!

  • Also, not sure if it already has been mentioned but if this sort of app can also be added to the chat feature, that would come in very handy.

You can then have lots of mini-games, and such with direct interaction.

Lastly also somehow have the ability to read print. So instead of having to type everything in, as an alternative, write it in and have the cam read in on it. That would be nice!

  • Very cool tech demo. You guys are awesome for posting this. Thanks.

  • thats amazing

  • Yeah (Comment 76) I can immagine hand drawn smiley’s and things like that.

On a side note, kicking this whole thing up a notch by giving the user ability to scan a few different frames for maybe a fighting game (punch, kick, jump) or potential platformers, top-down shooters and whatnot!

Sony… you’ve stumbled into a GOLD mine and like Steve Jobs said once I think… PATENT THE **** OUT OF THIS!

  • Freakin Awesome… I’m so blown away. Blow that up ur ass Wii60

  • This is really impressive guys.

I can’t wait to see what the PS3 offers 4 or 5 years down the road. I can’t even imagine the potential.

  • Give that young man Anton Mikhailov some serious money!!!!!!!! He is going to generate millions for Sony in PS3, Eye Toy and software sales. I have been in the video game industry for some years now and this guy is a pot of gold to any developer! Give him many pots of gold before he is magically recruited by my friend Mr. Gates.(Hes good at giving people lots of moneys) = ) Just trying to help out the faithful PS fans that have been waiting for something awesome.

Again, thanks for all the input guys, you rock!

@darkiewonder: Its possible to extend the image into 3D or 2.5D so the floorplan you draw becomes a house, for example.

@OrganicShadow: 1. It cuts around all the pen outlines it finds and keeps the texture inside. 2. It guesses the position of the turret based on the shape and orientation, provided its at least somewhat “tanklike” 3. Sure, but this would have to be part of a product not a demo :)

@mu5afir: All of the physics in those demos are calculated on the fly, but you can still play around with the parameters manually if you want.

@gdenso: Movable turret(s) is something that I really want to implement myself also :) We’re trying to keep things simple with this, so top priority is coming up with an easy to use interface for such a feature.

@thefjk: Stop-capture sprites are definitely being discussed :)

  • Richard and the special teams crews MAKE THE BEST VIDEOS EVERRRRRRRRR!!!!

  • Holy crap! That looks awesome!
You should include some software like that in the next version of EyeCreate. For animation purposes, at least.

  • I…am at a lost for words.

  • Yeah this is some really cool stuff, very intriguing. Um….to the folks at the blog.playstation…how about incorporating a video feed that we can view while on the PS3….I know there are a lot of people out there what would be into that.

  • Hey guys! This is an amazing start! I’m really excited to see where this goes! Would it be possible to make a “line rider” type game, using the lunar lander prototype? where you draw your movable object at the top, and draw the “maze” or “track” down the page, and you can use the controller to control the forward/reverse action of your character… Just an idea. There are all sorts of ideas I can think of with that technology. I am just stoked that you got it to where you can draw your own levels. That alone is almost a 1-up on what LittleBigPlanet is doing. The ability to draw your own levels is amazing. If you could just tweak the gravity, and the inertia mechanics or something, this could potentially be an amazing, virtually endless game for the PS3. Maybe if you could code 20-30 of these “mini games” in a couple months, you could easily release them on a disc with the eyetoy/stand, charge $45-50, and make some pretty good cash off of it.

  • Wow, that’s the most fantastic demo I’ve ever seen. I actually created an account here specifically so I could gush about it. It sounds like it was really straight forward to create, too, which just proves how well thought out the framework is.

I’m really jealous of you guys making all this really cool stuff. Got any job openings? :)

  • Thanks again everyone for all the positive comments and ideas. And:

@willywhiskey, @ssaunderswan (and others): We envision many varied uses for the PS Eye. Gesture input, face detection, head and body tracking; we experimented with this stuff with EyeToy and PS2, but the compute power of Cell and improved quality video of PS Eye makes these things much more doable in a game for PS3.

@ISEMAN: I forgot about those static cling things! My first thought was shrinky-dinks; just like with those, things can look a little rough when you draw them, but after they are scanned and shrunk (e.g. the tanks) they look awesome. Not that I’m implying Anton’s drawings are…cough…programmerish, but they sure looks better small!

@Manos: Cousin? Roommate? Seriously, you must be related to Anton somehow…. :)

  • hahaha Richard you are Jealous!!

  • Wow. This is awesome. I so want you guys to release some sort of limited SDK for the ps3/eye so I could make simple 2d fighters by drawing on the thing.. using the Eye for simple “photoshopping” of a picture I could pull up from an SD card would be awesome – like just using it with a small dry erase board to draw around the eyes, remove red-eye.. there’s just so many things running around in my head now! haha.. I think I’ll send in my resume a little later. :D

  • Man, that was awesome!!! I don’t know what to say, I just hope that you guys put on your thinking caps and blow our minds, because what you are doing is crazy. lol

I just hope that whatever you guys do, we can get at least a taste of it soon, because all the games that I am dying to play don’t come out till next year. GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Some of the coolest stuff I’ve seen lately. I still think the Eye Toy tech has the potentially to truely revolutionise game interaction, much more than the Wii wand and balance board. It’s just finding the right way to integrate it into games is the the key.

  • yeaaaaa awesome, so capability for the ps3 that its the new generation…… cant wait to see what will come in the future, You guy are crazy but that make the best thing :) Keep up the great and hard work :)

  • Lol, thats awesome!
Hopefully to see stuff like this on PSN sometime down the road, because I would seriously buy.

  • Before I clicked on this topic. I was thinking it was going to be another stop animation video. My jaw literally dropped when you scanned the image of the tank and actually played with it. Question, is it possible to re-create vector based games such as Major Havoc?

  • Wow this is a really interesting concept. You deserve a pay raise because this idea alone destroys anything the Wii has to offer.
