UT3 & PS3: ChChChChChaanges!

146 0

You know what’s crazy is that I can remember when I was entering my first year of high school and there was this game that all my friends were going nuts about. I went over to a friend’s house for a LAN session of Duke Nukem 3D and there instead, he was playing this little game called Unreal. I was already a huge fan of the genre, so it seemed natural that I fall headlong into it as well. After all, it was way ahead of the curve and had the most impressive enemy AI and graphics that I had ever seen.

Fast forward to 2006, and I’d received a job offer for an Associate Producer position at Epic Games to work on the exact franchise that had fascinated me almost exactly 10 years earlier. AHAHAHA OMGNUTS!! I mean, yeah – in this generation, growing up as a gamer, and then getting the opportunity to work at a company that epitomizes the games that you’ve loved for a big part of your life; it’s just nuts.

UT3 & PS3: ChChChChChaanges!

So anyways, 10 years later, and what’s changed? The series is still going strong with Unreal Tournament 3 and all of the great gameplay that UT fans love, but there is a big feature that we had been wanting to bring to the console platform for some time. Since a good portion of UT3’s development team got their game industry start in mod making; it only made sense that we would bring to PLAYSTATION 3 what PC owners have known for years with mod support. Mods, or modifications (to the original game they were based off of) can include new weapons or characters, models, meshes, maps, mutators; or they can even be entirely new games themselves using the editing tools, game assets, and code base.

You, my PS3-loving friends reading this, have the opportunity to reshape the distribution and development of user created content and game making. In a generation where making a game for a console is becoming restricted almost exclusively for larger companies due to cost, this is your opportunity to bring your idea to Sony’s platform via UnrealEngine3’s tool set.

But HOW you say?! You’re not a coder, and you haven’t modeled anything in your life?! Well, first step would be to watch some of the tutorial videos made by our talented LDs to get familiarized with the toolset. Next would be to get the PC version on your system and use the level editor tools to create a level while experimenting with UT3’s existing assets.

When you get more advanced, you could use the scripting language UnrealScript, Kismet (a visual based scripting system, so no coding knowledge required); or even your own 3D models to make something completely unique. When you’ve finished, just use UnrealFrontEnd (or ‘UFE’ – it’s included with the PS3 mod tools), a program that will automatically format your project into PS3-optimal packages. Just name your mod something cool, select your removable media, plug it into your PS3, import the mod, and you’re ready to play. By the magic of the programming team, any new maps or mutators will be automatically recognized in the menus. Important to note that if you’re not one of those creative types, you’re more than welcome to download any of this new content from a friend onto media and enjoy the mod revolution that way as well.

Right now, this tech is only available on the PS3 console, so this is my challenge to you, PS3 owners! Create the next big thing! Completely change the world of gaming as we know it! We can’t wait to see what you come up with.

  • im buying this game especially to support tanya!!
    yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
1 game sale, thanks to you!!!

    any others???

  • Just wanted to clear things up about the Editor…

The PS3 version of UT3 DOES NOT include the Unreal Editor in the same way that Gears of War on Xbox 360 does not.

Because the editor is so robust and is the very same editor Epic and other companies use to create their games the Unreal Editor is only available with the purchase UT3 or Gears of War on the PC.

So if you have UE3 on your PC you will have the ability to create mods and share them with PC and PS3 users. If you have the PS3 version of UT3 then sit back and reap in the rewards of free user generated content on your console.

  • Holy crap…no pressure PS3 owners..no pressure.

  • Theres only 2 games I care about in the video game industry…GTA4 and Unreal Tournament 3…I also grew up in the Duke Nukem 3D days, and to this day I check the http://www.3DRealms.com website weekly for an update on Duke3D…Sadly, 10 years later theres nothing solid…But I still have faith!

Anyway…Unreal Tournament 3 is the main reason I have a Playstation3. Possibly the only reason because if PS3 didn’t have UT3, I wouldn’t own one.

So, 2 Words: UT3 will be the silent Halo 3 killer and as more people play, it will slowly become the best FPS game.

  • WOW!!!
This is the type of thing you will just never see on the DRM happy Crap box 3 sucks-D.
Its seems they don’t want their Box being touched by anyone but them.
Btw im loveing my 6 core linux ps3. Now i dont need microsoft for anything!
    WOOT!!!

  • Hmm, for some strange reason I can’t Digg this topic..

  • So the mod would be something similar as what people been talking about with Little Big Planet? Create your own levels or arena?

  • @ Epic Games

This is really great news for up and comers like myself, who are standing on the brim of the industry looking in, at our passionate hearts jumping around trying to take in all they can, before snapping back into our chests bringing us back to our normal lives, aka reality, and the hard work that is the process of major acheivements(ie certification/red tape)… You’ve put a lot of power in ps3 gamer’s hands, and I raise my glass to you, you just made my Christmas Wish List with this installment of UT, as I skipped the last one due to system/pc restrictions at the time, hopfully my Wife spoils me this year… my ps3 is starving for a game/app of this calibur, and I want to give a shout out, and a ‘Thank You’ to the people at Epic Games who have been treating ps3 fans fairly, in spite of, negative falsified fanboy interview articles across the net… Keep up the great work, We hardcore of ps3 will reward your efforts to entertain gamers I’m sure.

  • @107 nacho

There are several Unreal Mods of the history, that with their dedicated practice, the ‘contributors’ have been able to construct full games that sometimes are very representative of the Unreal gameplay, and some that you’d almost not recognize, as the viewpoints/gameplay has nothing to do with what Unreal Tournament is in general… basically if you know what you’re doing, the sky’s the limit, and you should look forward to seeing a lot of interesting user generated content ie. maps-characters- game levels with storyboarding, and probably even full ameteur games. The future is exciting indeed.

  • hot shizzle. Tanya you gotta give us a date on the European release! ;)

  • That seems awesome, long live PS3!

  • The only reason the PlayStation 3 doesn’t support user created mods because the Yellow Dog Linux (alternative operating system) doesn’t have access to the GPU (Graphic Proccessing Unit). Sony isn’t allowing it at this moment and with many reason why they haven’t (from my knowledge).

We still have the next best thing supporting mods on the PLAYSTATION Network. That’s something XBOX Live doesn’t allow because they have restrictions. All I’m wondering is the frame rate steady, graphics on par / better, and are the controls smooth (with mouse / key board and SIXAXIS)?

  • I want to know if there are any plans for the future that UTIII will allow the PS3 version players the chance to do Mods/Level Editer. I have some crazy ideas but seeing as I have no plans on paying for a new video game PC I am out of luck. So I just want to know if may be in the future I will have a chance to make mods or would that only be for the next UT game.

Even if there is no chance I still can’t wait to pick up UT I liked it a lot years ago and now that I can play it on the PS3 that should be great.

  • as a proud owner of the ps3 i just like to say thanks to epic for there support on helping the ps3 games grow…also wuold like to thank ken.k..jack.t..and phil for there outstanding courage in backing the ps3 formate…ut3 should be a blast..and now fun with the mods…anyone can check my future comments on gamepro.com under the name soulofawarrior…or check me on the psn as dodomasta3000..anyways great article.

  • See you guys online!

  • I already have the game on pre-order and it will be my Christmas gift from my husband! :)

I’ll likely wait for the price to come down on the PC version before trying my hand at modding… but it’s too bad that the PS3 version didn’t come with a discount on the PC version – you’re essentially getting two product sales!

I’ve also been watching your website for updated information and I have to say that I’m disappointed that you don’t list much in the way of REAL information. Through various web sources (rumours, speculation) it seems that there will be split screen campaign play and also 4 person online co-op play. I also realize that other modes could be created through mods… but it would be nice to have all of this information in a FAQ’s section on your website (especially as the Playstation site lists Players:1 )

Additional questions I have based on other web rumours would be:
Does the game have splitscreen online (like Warhawk)?
If there are two PS3’s in the house, can the disk be used to get one PS3 online, then the same disk used to get the second PS3 online? (again, like Warhawk)?
Is there a LAN option (and again, does it require 2 copies of the game?)
What are the specific community features? Lobbies, voice support, clans, clan matches, password enabled games, ingame buddy lists?

ummm… yeah… every dev/ game publisher should have a comprehensive FAQ’s page for their games regarding modes, features, technical specs.

Hey… I can dream can’t I? Until then, I guess I unwrap that shiny package and be “surprised”… not always positively!

  • not-buying-incognito

    Hey there Tanya… :) I’d hit it… :)

  • @not-buying-incognito

Yeah that’s real polite to say to a woman…>_>

Anyway, I played Unreal Tournament when I was a lad. I look forward to the release of UT3. Stay Positive Epic, and Stay Safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    <3333
    Kudos to the Entire Team

  • The movement in this type of games makes me sick…literally, but I want to buy UTIII for the mods and to support the developers for choosing the best console (PS3) and Sony for giving developers the freedom that others (Microsoft) won’t give them.

Keep making great games for the PS3 first (exclusives preferred) and I’ll keep buying.

  • PSN: stennex

I am ready to kick ASS next week.

  • so you have to buy both versions? screw that then.

  • So with the Mod options are you going to be able to make custom maps??

  • Awesome… I can’t wait to see what this will bring.

I casual MOD in the Source engine and I’d love to see that be used on the PS3, yet I doubt that will happen.

It would be awesome if Sony created a simple tool set for people to develop games for the PS3 and let them distribute it by themselves.

  • Boy, a good number of you people need to open up a window and let some of that creepy out….

I’m sure she’s super impressed by you all.

Anyways, congratulations Tanya on the weightloss and all that. More importantly, at the risk of sounding like an infomercial, and keeping it off.

I’m buying the game reguardless if you come with it or not. The even sadder part… I’m sure now that Jade Raymond is old hat, you’ll be targeted by all the pubecent boys you can handle.

  • Eventually Epic will release the Unreal Editor as a free download.

  • if you guys want UT3 to sell well and capitalize on the fact it’s coming out first for PS3, you need to market this thing like crazy. Casual gamers will see the commercials of this game that looks like Gears of War and be like “wow, that’s coming out for PS3? – I better pick one up”. Little do they know it’s coming out for 360 next year, but for right now it’s exclusive so the ads will have the Playstation 3 thing flash across the screen at the end instead of the rather ambiguous multi-console disclaimer.

  • Oh yeah, the 11th cant come soon enough. One more day people, one more day.

  • So can someone official PLEASE answer this question?

To be able to make mods on our PC’s, do we have to buy BOTH the PS3 version AND the PC version?

    because that is ridiculous!

please someone official form Epic or Sony here answer this simple question!

    thanks!

  • i just read where the PC version has only sold 66,000 copies in November. UT3 is a very important PS3 timed exclusive game. Will the sales of the PS3 version fair better??? I hope they do

  • What is going on? No red post from the postmasters?

  • We’ve all been lied to. You can’t make UT3 mods/maps for the PS3.

    http://utforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=591886

  • Noticed under Community > News it shows UT3 Patch 1.1 Now Available. I assume this is only for the PC version, but it would be nice if it was stated so, so as not to confuse us PS3 players.

  • I am one of the unfortunate people who bought this thinking that there would be multiplayer split screen in the game. Not cool Epic, not cool. Its been advertised, and done on other games with the Unreal Engine, why not on your OWN GAME? Social gaming is where its at, not everyone wants the ‘online experience’ so why exclude this feature?

  • @zola

From what I understand, the only way you will be able to make mods for the game is to buy the PC version. Then you will have to cook them especially for the PS3 version, once support for that comes out. Currently, you cant put mods on the PS3 version anyway. Just another thing they lied to use about. Multiplayer and mods. The way I see it, I just paid 10 dollars more retail for a far inferior product than the PC version.

  • if i could open to discussion how the game actually feels/works with kboard/mouse? my sense (first impression) is that there are inherent limitations when any game is built upon joystick (analog) movement, as in most gaming controllers. thus my first take is that the mouse kboard movements are a bit choppy. up/down look drifts when you move forward/back/side in tandem. still much better then traditional controller. btw, i use M1/M2 for movement and mouse for look. better with usb cord to device directly then wireless kboard mouse. will try board for movement today and see if that helps. apologies if this post belongs somewher else – new to forum. thanks.

  • witch Unreal Tournament PC version do i get arent there 2 of them

  • Sony should’ve hyped up UTIII. I played that [DELETED] today and daaaaaaaaamn it’s got to be one of the best I’ve played. When the mods hit- it’s gonna be a whole different ride everyday. There should have been commercials all over the place about this game. What’s with that, Sony? Why don’t you guys bother? Waiting for your buddies at MS to do it first??? Someone’s gonna do it- and you should do it first since it’s on your system. It’ll really piss me off to see MS hyping the hell out of it for their console, knowing you guys did nothing of the sort. If you wanna sell games you need to understand how to use commercials to your advantage. UTIII is the best out there.

  • If the other version that comes out later next year for the other console has multiplayer offline will Epic give PS3 players a patch for that? Or will they just take in some bucks and deny us a good update?

  • BTW this game should’ve been hyped to hell. I played it and it’s one of the best I’ve played. There’s no reason for it to not have commercials airing every here and there. MS will most likely make commercials. You should do it first, Sony before everyone starts thinking it’s only on the broken system. Shame be your name for not hyping it up. If MS does it before you I’d be rather upset that they’re promoting a product that you had first. Or is it up to Epic to make commercials?

  • Great game! My only gripe — the audio is horrible. I’m getting crackling and popping sounds. I’m using optical audio from PS3 to a Sony STR-DE597 receiver. Works great for my other 27 PS3 games. I’ve tried turning off Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1, same issue. I’ve tried switching to A/V multi audio, same issue.

Other than the audio, the game is great. Splitscreen would be nice, but it sounds like you’ve heard that already.

  • Only the PS3 has the power to handle all the mods that you can throw at it. The Halo franchise is trying that now but you still cant “re-design” the levels. With this you really have the opprotunity to do what you want.

  • i have been playing ut3 for a week now i got it from a shop that imports. the game is greatbar 1 thing

My problem is voice support it is a complete joke that a game that requires teamwork has been released with voice support not working

i have been playing the burnout demo with no problems at all voice is perfect

i have a motorola headset which works on warhawk motorstorm resistance and burnout

i also have the ps3 eye with its 4 array microphone still does not work on ut3

these guys are supposedly the best programmers in the world and they cant make voice communication work. I guess this is not new for epic on gears of war there were voice problems too you would think they’d have learned by now

  • can anyone tell me how you go about making a mod, like how do you get the software to make them is what i need to know, does it cost anything, too?

  • wesnaw,

to make a mod for the ps3 version of unreal tournament I think you need to buy the PC version that comes with a mod creator with which you can “cook” your mod for use on a PS3 console. I guess you would need a computer strong enough to run ut3?

  • Right now only the UT developers have the tools to make PS3 Mods but they will be releasing the tools free to the public soon.

    http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165140

It says so in that article in the 2nd paragraph

  • Thanks, and if anyone knows an actual date when people can make mods specifically for the ps3, i’d like to hear.
