Firmware Update (v2.10)

403 0

Firmware Update v2.10 is now live. This new system update enhances media playback on the PLAYSTATION 3 in a number of ways that the PS3 community has indicated are important.

We are introducing a much-requested video playback format with this update: DivX and VC-1 (WMV) videos become playable in the Video section of the XMB. This update also brings the PS3’s Blu-ray drive up to Profile 1.1. “Picture in Picture” and other enhancements become available on Profile 1.1 compatible Blu-ray discs.

A voice changer feature is added, enabling you to change the tone of your voice during voice or video chat.

As always, we’re committed to enhancing PLAYSTATION 3 functionality, and we’ll continue to post firmware update details on the blog as they are released.

Hey! Thanks for another FANTASTIC update!!! Suggestions:
    1. In game custom soundtracks
    2. Album Artwork from network streamed music (make artwork displayed larger in visualization mode; preferably iTunes artwork retrieval)
    3. Easier navigation in the Playstation Store with a tabbed & 2 column interface (like Xbox Marketplace)
    4. …
    5. For email there should be a delete all function
    6. Video chat invites shouldn’t appear as email messages…they should be selectable as yes or no in the corner info pane.
    7. When your deep in xmb menus (especially on media server directories) holding left should back you out of the menus to the root xmb category and stop there.
    8. Date & Time should show up when the PS button is pressed (like PSP)
    9. Flash update
    10. DTS-MA Bitstream output
    11. Do away with installation of demos…just use a disc image.
    12. On-screen keyboard should be have a option for a wheel style alphabet that would allow letter selection via the analog stick. And the directional pad when left or right is pressed a different selection “wheel” should slide to the useable position. Or even better would be a replica of the psp homebrew keyboard found here:
    http://pspupdates.qj.net/index.php?pg=49&aid=23876
It is known as the Danzeff OSK.
    13. More video shortcuts via controller.
    14. Remove “Delete Completed” dialog
    15. PSStore should have demos for PSN titles
    16. Volume adjust (Not Mute) on a game queue videos on a game by game basis.
    17. Powered USB ports while in standby
    18. Video search feature like on PSP. Should work with network streamed video as well.
    19. Static Icons for video in XMB (So I can add Movie Posters as the icons)
    20. H.264/x264 in MKV container support
    21. Video Playlists
    22. Ability to easily add files to a folder grouping in XMB… annoying having to type in group title to each individual file
    23. Separate auto-play setting for BD/DVD vs. game disc!!!

Whew! That was long winded! Thanks for the update again and for listening the user community! You’re awesome!

  • Thanks Love the update but for Christmas all i want is a in game XMB for PS3

  • awesome know i could sound real low or stupid with the changer also it can prevent criminals from remembering your voice(can happen)since im 11 people can now treat me older sometimes

  • i really dont give a crap on in-game xmb i do want it but im not as desperate(as other people here) oh yeah #202 has a lot of good suggestions i agree mostly with suggestion 22 i hate doin it seperately

  • QUESTION ABOUT THE UPDATE: After updating, my video column was left with a blu-ray data folder, which I assumed was the 1.1 data, but it appears to be empty, containing 0kb of info. Is this just a temp folder that is a remnant of the update, and can now be deleted? Or will I eff up my BD settings by removing it? Does anyone know?

  • I appreciate all the work you guys put into your updates. That said, will we be seeing Xvid support as well?

And if I’m making a wishlist, I’d like to see SMB/Samba/CIFS network share support in addition to your DLNA offering. It would certainly help some of us share our media from say a linux fileserver to our PS3 without having to use DLNA servers.

Keep up the good work adding features, I’ll wait to see what goodies January’s update has for us.

  • First of all: Thanks

    My X-mas wish:
Make the PSP act like a remote. I want to navigate the musicfolders and play music on my PS3 without turning on the TV.

  • Thanks for re-blocking the RSX under Linux. It actually made the desktop useful and wasn’t even a piracy threat.

  • Nice update. I like the nice little surprises! Internet radio on the PS3 soon? Let us use Pandora on it.

  • The earth visualisation is great, Sony.

  • Nice update, but as you know we need in game messaging, and custom soundtrack support like yesterday.

  • Thanks so much guys for this update. I’ve wanted divx/xvid since I bought a PS3, and it’s finally here. No problems here as of yet, it’s played every file I’ve thrown at it. GREAT WORK GUYS

  • The XBox 360 has the ability to scale all games from 720p to 1080p. The PS3 should have the same. The reason, I mention is is because many of us with HDTVs only have the ability to play games in HD via 1080i. All 720p games downscale to 480p. So much for HD gaming.

  • I feel that when watching a widescreen movie on the PS3 you should be able to make the movie full screen!!! I have been waiting patiently for this update to happen, but you guys never did it yet. If Xbox360 has this option why doesn’t PS3 have these types of options. the reason I brought this up is because I have SpiderMan3 on Blu Ray & I hate widescreen. there’s no fullscreen option for a $70 product I paid for & there’s this huge, huge thick blackness that takes up most of the screen. I dont even watch my SM3 at all no more because of this!!!!!! & I am the biggest SPIDER-MAN fan………………….. SONY PLEASE HELP ME BY PUTTING THAT SIMPLE UPDATE UP FOR ME REALLY SOON PLEASE SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Now, I would love to see .avi file support. Otherwise, this is great, more media support means more media usage.

  • DIVX working a treat!! Awesome thanks Sony!

  • Nice update. I’d like to see in a future update an option to allow password protect on start up. I say “option” because some people my not want this active on their PS3. If my PS3 it were ever to get stolen they could just use it without any problems. Plus it will keep people I don’t want using my PS3 out.

  • I may be the first to ask, but can I assume we will get profile 2.0 “BD-live” someday. Maybe the non tech minded want to know how future proof the ps3 is.

  • I was forced to do this update before I could get online to play Tekken. I went through the process to update it by letting it download then install. After the install it was supposed to reboot, but it hung there on a black screen. I let it sit there for about a half-hour while I made something to eat. The screen didn’t change at all, so I reset the system – after it was supposed to reset it self.

Now the system will start to play the music as it boots, but it has a hard-freeze after it’s been on for two seconds. I think that it’s bricked. GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

  • In Game Messaging. Still waiting. We know you acknowledge that you see what we are writing, but as the old saying goes “The first step is admitting, the second step is fixing it”. Waiting on step 2!!!!!!!

  • @SphereTubeBox:

“Hey! Thanks for another FANTASTIC update!!! Suggestions:
    1. In game custom soundtracks

Sony has stated before this is already present in the PS3 and devs just have to allow it. Proof comes from the latest revision of Superstardust HD.

    2. Album Artwork from network streamed music (make artwork displayed larger in visualization mode; preferably iTunes artwork retrieval)

Not sure how they’d handle this unless DLNA specifically has a hook for it.

    3. Easier navigation in the Playstation Store with a tabbed & 2 column interface (like Xbox Marketplace)

Let’s pray that the store will get replaced when Home is released.

    4. …

    !!!

    5. For email there should be a delete all function

    I agree.

    6. Video chat invites shouldn’t appear as email messages…they should be selectable as yes or no in the corner info pane.

    Corner info pane? Hmm.

    7. When your deep in xmb menus (especially on media server directories) holding left should back you out of the menus to the root xmb category and stop there.

Totally agree there. Especially when you’re using something like Nero MediaHome and it sorts the hell out of your content. Once you get 5 or 6 deep it’s annoying to back out.

    8. Date & Time should show up when the PS button is pressed (like PSP)

Bah, who cares. I have a clock on the wall, a watch on my arm, and a cellphone in my pocket for date and time.

    9. Flash update

I agree. If the browser is Linux-based I don’t know what’s holding them back. Adobe released the flash 9 plugin update for Linux months ago.

    10. DTS-MA Bitstream output
    11. Do away with installation of demos…just use a disc image.

This is a problem since the demos are compressed content. I don’t want a demo decompressing on the fly, it’ll lag all over the place.

    12. On-screen keyboard should be have a option for a wheel style alphabet that would allow letter selection via the analog stick. And the directional pad when left or right is pressed a different selection “wheel” should slide to the useable position. Or even better would be a replica of the psp homebrew keyboard found here:

It is known as the Danzeff OSK.

Haven’t tried it. If you really want to type plug in a keyboard or use a Bluetooth one.

    13. More video shortcuts via controller.

    Blu-ray remote maybe?

    14. Remove “Delete Completed” dialog

I agree. You told the PS3 to delete something, and it deleted. Great, get on with business.

    15. PSStore should have demos for PSN titles

Up to the developers. Many devs have said that making a demo is extremely time consuming.

    16. Volume adjust (Not Mute) on a game queue videos on a game by game basis.

    Game queue videos?

    17. Powered USB ports while in standby

Not a bad idea. Power down but still recharge controllers. Then again your PC can also charge the controllers.

    18. Video search feature like on PSP. Sh

  • how about a playlist for video for the next firmware upgrade?
    —————————-
You read my mind. The only videos i have stored on the PS3 are Looney Tunes cartoons, and it would be nice to be able to simply let them play one after another without having to manually start a new one every 7 minutes.

  • Nice update. It’s not in-game xmb but the numbering pretty much gave away that it was minor one unlike the 2.0 which threw me off.

Disregard the complaints about frequent firmware updates. It is insane that people are upset that their PS3 is getting added functionality as it becomes available as opposed to waiting until their is a major update.

  • Yay!!! WMV support.

  • Whoops. I meant to type there instead of their.

  • Not sure if it’s been posted yet. But the stealth additions to this firmware update are being widely appreciated. The new remote play functionality between the PS3 and PSP has been widened to include all PSone downloaded games and PSone discs to be playable over remote play.

Quick question though; Why aren’t Sony advertising the remote play functionality more? It would sell PSPs like no tomorrow.

  • Sony!!! You Rock!!! but put Mexico on the countries list!! Thanks For the super Update!! this will make the ps3 Rock harder!!!!

  • I would like to request that a video display setting to adjust the brightness, color, etc. when playing Divx files to be added on the next firmware update. Also, please add the support to display subtitles as well. Thanks.

  • Good update; however, I was disappointed once again that there is no browser update. The current browser is USELESS – most of the sites are using a newer version of flash.

  • You know the voice changer thing gets old after everyone abuses it. So thanks for killing my ear drums..

  • Sony thank you for the new firmware update!

Its great to have Divx,Xvid and WMV playback.

But for some reason a lot of my WMV and Divx and Xvid files still do not play on the PS3.

Sony please try and add every codec that you can so all my movies play on PS3!!!

You need better WMV and Divx/Xvis support.

And also add x264 “High Profile and MKV. Also Quicktime support would be great.

And for god sake please upgrade the browser. Orhow about cutting a deal with Firefox?

  • FireFox browser in PS3 would kick major $%$%!!! :)

  • “WMA Pro” for audio is a mush have for the PS3!!!!

  • There is a limit to size? Why? Are you afraid of ripped HD movies or something? Jeeze….

  • All i can say is: BOOYEAH! DIVX SUPPORT!

Right behind the 360 update which also includes DivX. Things are looking up for multi-console owners :D

Good Job Sony :D /salutes I made sure to download this update JUST for this DivX, the other features are very nice additions too, haha.

  • GAY!!! still NOT giving us what we REALLY want!!!!!!

  • I’m glad to get DIVX support. I notice that it isn’t quite as good as the support a 30$ Walmart player has, but it is a start.

Tested a few DIVX videos and about half of them worked. The ones that did work looked great, seemed to be better quality than after a H.264 transcode.

The planet view in the music player is good. I’d appreciate more like that.

  • Sony, I just have to express my EXTREME disgust at implementing a voice changer. It has almost entirely ruined my online experience, and was a total waste of time when something else could be worked on. Thank you, I hope you will follow Microsoft in this and quickly remove the feature.

  • I was introduced to the Xbox back in 2003 became a hardcore fan for about 4 years including the Xbox 360 but, when I was following up on the PS3 I’ve come to realize that is and will be a better system with a little TLC. Being a 360 owner, there are a few things that the PS3 is lacking in terms of functionality. I think the PS3 needs the following in order to be a great system.

    – The ability to tap the PS button on the DualShock3 or the SixAxis to access the XMB during gameplay.

    – The ability to check your text, voice and video messages in this in-game XMB.

    – The ability to see whose online on the their Friends List in the in-game XMB.

    – Check the status of your downloads (if any). In the in-game XMB.

    – The ability to check the time, date, weather, controller battery and the latest news from the information bar during gameplay.

    – The ability to set your controls to your profile according to the genre you play. (Example: You buy a brand new racing game, the controls will automatically set to your preference in controls.)

    – The ability to chat with up to 6 people during a game your chat party aren’t even playing because is playing something different.

    – The ability to change your online status. (Show up either online and offline.

This is everything that I thought up! I hope eveyone agrees with me that these are some awesome features that Sony should add to the PS3, just to name a few.

So far, So good Sony. Not that bad.

  • I forgot a few things.

    – The PS3 should have an automatic shut off after either downloads are complete or a certain period of time that the PS3 has not been played.

    – USB Ports should be work during standby to charge the contollers.

  • Big thanks from regarding the update. Mainly for the Divx(and XVID), VC-1 WMV and Blu-ray 1.1.

In regards to the Divx/XVID 99% are working fine.

    I have some old JAG ep’s one which is 640*352, Audio @ 128kbps(MPEG L3), Video 23fr/s, 136kbps, 24bit XVID which works fine.

Another one which is identical except video is 29fr/s and resolution is 320*240 and it dosnt work. Size wise they are identical. Both the above work on my 360 (after it’s recent update).

As for VC-1 WMV playback i have similar problem. All my TV ep’s work fine 300mb-1gb in size, roughly 1-1.5 Mbps. Though some of my movies i have backed up are 700-1.5gb in size dont work. The only difference is the Video Codec (As reported by the PS3) is at 3.5-5Mbps.

Keep up the good work though.

  • Will any comment ever be made about the SACD situation? In terms of allowing multichannel SACDs to be played back with DTS or Dolby Digital downconversion?

  • Got the firmware update today. And guess what?! Now none of my PS3 games dont appear in the game menu after inserting the disc?! So whats the solution? Format the hard disk?

  • Could you please.in the naxt update, fix the INTERNET BROWSER,as said previously from darkiewonder? At least for the flash player and the Divx Web Player.
There’s a lot of flash & divx videos on the web and we can’t see them because of that.So please if you can,do it in the nexy update version.Ty ;)

  • Great update again, just tested it last evening.

    For next update, please add
    – DTS-HD MA Bitstream
    – FLAC support

    Thanks for that :-)

Merry X-Mas to all of you,
    mika1609
