It’s official – SCEA announced today the April 17 North American release date for Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, available exclusively for PS3. Developed by famed Polyphony Digital, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue will be available for $39.99 on Blu-ray Disc (BD) and as a download via the PLAYSTATION Store.

The BD version will offer added value with an exclusive behind-the-scenes High Definition (HD) video feature called “Beyond the Apex”. This video will offer some awesome access to the folks at Polyphony and give some background on how they are able to create such a realistic and beautiful driving simulator. We’ll have more information on GT5 Prologue leading up to its launch in April, but until then, check out this video:

  • COOL im looking 4ward to this…finally a game where it shows ps3 power…ALL we need now is in game music and XMB and we are set

  • Does anybody know what song is playing in the video? It seems that Sony has somebody with good music tastes for their videos. I went out and bought Saliva’s album after seeing the PS3 commercials.

  • Something should have been done for Prologue, like, when you have done certain things in Prologue, you will have a bunch of bonus cars and tracks, songs etc for the real game. Not only about half of the game. Because although it is a sweet taste of whats to come, your paying 40 bucks for a part of the game, and then you have to buy that same part again to get the rest of it? Then what happens to prologue? It becomes useless!

  • Wow, $40 is just way too expensive. We’ve been saying this for a long time now and apparently no one was listening. You’ll sell less than half as many as you would if you sold it for $20 and you’ll have dissapointed customers at the same time.

Too bad, I’ll keep my $40 and wait for GT5.

  • Here’s an idea… $40 for a demo is a lotta dough even though it’s a pretty beefy demo. To help offset this a bit, it’d be nice if a coupon were included to cut some cost off the full version of the game when it’s done. You know, maybe say “Thank you” to the people that payed so much to support you guys in mid-development.

Another idea would be to include some kind of bonus content with this game that you can only get by playing/owning this demo, which can then be transferred over to the full game.

Is the full game going to be a super-set of this demo? i.e.: Are all the features, cars, tracks, etc. in Prologue going to carry over and be in the full game, or will there be something exlcusive here that we wont see in the full game? I’d like some reassurance that I wouldn’t be paying for much of the same content all over again if/when I buy the full game. GT5 looks amazing, but not $100 amazing, IMHO.

  • O damn!! that is gunna kiss arse

  • Nice. My birthday’s in April so I want to get this, along with Grand Theft Auto IV.

When is the full game going to be released?

  • Hey SWEET. My friend will be pumped! If I get this I will probably get the BD Version-No disc space on my 20GB-Yes I’m going to upgrade gotta dave everything and back up first.

I’m not a big race fanatic, though, and this might not be for me.

Sony-Keep up the Download/Disc option, it’s working great and gives everyone a choice.

  • This means there is no chance in hell that GT5 comes out this year. Prologue followed by the full title in just a few months? Does not sound likely.

  • Is there any way we can get through the to the developers and tell them that we want 4 player split screen and custom tracks in the final version? It can’t be a hard thing to do knowing how powerful the PS3 is, right? It should be able to do it so there’s no reason it shouldn’t be done.

  • I’d like to be able buy the BD versions, and then load them onto my PS3. I understand that there may be worries about it being installed on all my friends units too, but I can see a solution. Should the PS3 connect to the PSN first to register the HDD install, and check it hasn’t already been done on another unit. This isn’t rocket science, is it?

Sony, the only advantage for downloading games from the PSN, is to have them install to the HDD. Warhawk was a touch cheaper, but well, I still have all the disadvantages of no physical copy, and being unable to play on another account on my own PS3 (one for me, the other for my girlfriend and guests).

As for price of GT5p, well, they can charge that much, because most of us will indeed pay that much. I know I will. However, if the BD version is the same price as the PSN version, then I’ll be buying the BD.

April has never seemed so far away…

  • Gran Turismo 4 Prologue released in Japan on December 4, 2003. Gran Turismo 4 didn’t release in Japan until December 28, 2004; in the United States it released on February 22, 2005. The full game releases a year after the prologue.

Pay the $40.00 to race Gran Turismo 5 Prologue online on April 17, 2008 or you’ll be waiting until late 2009 to race Gran Turismo 5 online.

  • 40 dollars is too much money for a piece of a game, specially the downloadable version… The bad thing is that probably GT5 full won’t come out in the USA before the same time next year, so it’s a hard choice between buying a small piece of game for nearly the price of a full one (or, in some cases, more) or waiting all that for the full game! Sony played it right on this one, most people will end up paying 100 dollars (Prologue + full) for what should cost 60!

  • This is far too expensive, even to the point of being obscene.

  • Personalty I find it absolutely ridiculous that They are charging $40 us for a DEMO . Yes its a DEMO you Fanboys and girls are what makes them think it is okay to do so .

Now don’t discound my opinion because you believe that I am an XBot , I have never owned a microsoft console and I never will . I just find it absolutely crazy that you all are willing to spend $40 dollars to what IS a DEMO . Sure you can rationalize it all you want “but you get so much cars!” or “It is better than any racing game out there!” HEY if you want to spend $100 bucks total on this “awesome” game then you go right ahead and support this business decision. But do NOT come crying on the forum when this becomes the NORM because all the companies want to rape your wallets in the future.

How can you NOT say this is a Demo? Go ahead and buy it and then a couple months down the road buy the exact same thing only complete . Um …. that is a DEMO folks.

I am excited about GT 5 as well . But I am NOT going to support this type of business and encourage it.

If they really cared about their fans then they would announce that when you bought this you would only have to pay the difference between it and the full version to get the complete experience when that launches. THIS is just a scheme to fill some wallets.

  • Will saved games from this version be compatible when the full game comes out so we dont have to redo(assuming this version has any career mode option) everything?

    Thanks in advance !

  • Yeah Sony must’ve been smokin some hard crack when they were pricing this demo. They’re nuts to think this is worth $40. I’d pay $20 at the most and that’s still asking a little too much for a piece of a game. I’ll wait till GT5 and play my little brother’s Forza until then. Some screwed up people working over there.

  • Why would anyone buy this? $40 for a DEMO. 5 tracks is definitely a demo to me. And, it’s not like these 5 tracs won’t be included in the full version. You’re basically paying $100 to play the same game, the only advantage is that you get to play a DEMO of the full version a bit earlier.

And for those who don’t agree with me, please go to dictionary.com and check the definition of a demo. GT5: Prolouge is a demo, a very good one albeit, but a demonstration with limited features to show consumers what the full version will be like.

  • drop that price, sony. you’re F-ing your customers with such a price. RSV and GR2 are $40 and they have much more than a little bit of this and that.

  • Hello Sony,
Im greatly looking foward to this game but $40 USD for a Prologue? Any details on the final version of GT5? Price and date?

  • I agree completely with the comments about needing a unified PSN store. Money can be converted very easily, especially if Sony sales products in that country. I don’t see why I can’t buy Japanese games off the Japanese store with my dollar. I know it may not be worth as much but hell I’ll pay more if I can just buy the game I want. Even service such as iTunes and other online music stores won’t let me purchase international music. I refuse to use iTunes because of that, please don’t make the PSN the same way. At least I can download demos, that has kept me going, but I still have to rely on imports to get my fix.

You could really make alot of money easily hosting import content for US and Europe users. If you don’t plan on bringing it here and are gonna host it on the Japanese store, then let the die hard fans get at it. It is definitely a marketing reason why you don’t do it, but you could build an incredible fanbase for imports and international content.

  • Man! There’s a bunch of cheap-asses in here! Wait for the full version if you think this ‘demo” is too much. Problem solved!

  • this is a first day purchase for me! i’m so looking forward to this game.

  • I won’t spend my 40 bucks just for playing the demo!!! come on sony…get real!! although it’s named prologue it’s just the DEMO!!!! lol

  • Does the online have voice/microphone support?, so you can talk to your friends while you play?

  • thats awesome.
im gonna get me a copy right when its released.
then ill get the full version when THATS released.

  • awwwwwww this game looks so bad! Cant wait to get it! it looks so good compared to the other 4, and those were great! Amazing! Good job you guys! You keep me believing in sony!

  • Having played the Japanese demo, this game plays very well and is a great racing experience and looks incredible on my 1080i CRT.

I have to say though, I’d love to see how many people do shell out $40 for an incomplete racing game. If a lot do, you’re just going to see more of this in the future. I’m holding out for a full version of Gran Turismo with at least as much content and variety as GT4.

For now I’ve got the two demos and Dirt to keep me happy.

  • It would be cool if sony bundled a beta for LittleBigPlanet or Killzone 2 in this game. Kinda like how Crackdown did it. I would totally buy the game if that happened!

  • I’ve been playing the HD Concept demo for the past 3 weeks, everyday for 2-3 hours. I would have paid $40 for JUST this one track, and even for JUST the R32 Skyline (which doesn’t look like it will be in the Prologue, hopefully will make it to GT5). If I could pickup the Prologue (in english) today, I’d pay $100 for it. Heck, I’d pay $250 too have GT5 in my hands right now. The point I’m trying to make here is this is more than just any ordinary game, and more than just a “demo”. Games like Counter Strike, Halo, Super Mario 64, World of Warcraft (which I’ve never played), have so much time and thought invested in them, which separates them from the rest. I bought a PS3 for the sole reason of playing Gran Turismo, and while $40 may be higher than some people were expecting to pay, I’ll gladly hand my cash over. If I think about it on an hourly basis, I’ll get more than my moneys worth. Even If I worked at Mc Donalds making $7/hour, the cost of the game would be worth my time flipping burgers. I bought Need for Speed Pro Street when I picked up my PS3, and played it for about 10 minutes, and haven’t since, and won’t ever again – I’d rather play the HD Concept demo.

  • G’day Scott,
I have two questions regarding the western release of GT:P

    1. Will Westerners get the same GT:TV content as Japan (i.e. Best MOTORing videos)?

    2. I have heard that the western release is getting more content (i.e. cars, tracks) than the Japanese/Asian release? Can you please confirm Scott.

    Cheers
    DX

  • Me neither, no way am I paying $40 for a demo. I don’t care how you rationalize it. I’ll wait. What makes it an even worse deal is the fact that when the real game comes out, re-selling the demo is going to be impossible. So it’s $40 down the drain for a game you will only play for a couple months. Pee on that.

  • It will be more than a couple months, and if you’re concerned about retail value and $40 go find yourself a decent paying job or start enjoying a different “game”. Gran Turismo isn’t a game – it’s a racing simulator.

  • If you announce that people who buy the prologue will receive a $10 off coupon for the full version, you will sell much more copies, and you will potentially sell more copies of the final game.

  • If GT HD is any indication (and it is) of what to expect in in GT5 Prologue, $40 is a steal. HD is awesome considering you can’t race. Oh yeah, HD is a very expensive DEMO. Let’s see, it is priced at the extremely high price of $0.00!!! Sony has a great free DEMO, as you would expect, and now a great game in Prologue. The real question might be that after prologue is available, will anyone really care if GT5 ever gets released.
Logitech just announced a new wheel for GT5 that is scheduled to launch the same time as Prologue. Racing just keeps getting better and better. Thanks Sony!!

Sony continues to produce the best racing games on the market, slow, but excellent product when they are released. The combination of PS3 and GT5 will be the lowest cost, most realistic racing available. Have you looked at the price of a PC needed to play a great on-line game like LFS?
