Skype on the PSP – Firmware (v3.90) Coming Soon

110 0

Want to talk trash before you play Syphon Filter: Combat Ops? Got a friend who lives in London that you want to catch up with? With the next PSP system software update, slated to launch this week, you’ll be able to communicate using your PSP-2000 and Skype. Here’s how it works:

  • Download and install the 3.90 firmware upgrade to the PSP-2000 system.
  • Connect the PSP to the Internet at a Wi-Fi hotspot.
  • Attach a PSP Headset and the Remote Control from the PSP-2000 Headphones to the system, and insert a Memory Stick Duo to save the Skype application software.
  • Access the Skype/Sign In icon within the Network category of the XMB menu. If you’ve never used Skype on your PC, you can create a free account directly on your PSP. If you already have a Skype account, you can simply enter your username/password.
  • To make a call, either access the Contacts icon and click on a name or scroll to the Dial icon and use the keypad.

You can talk to anyone else on Skype anywhere in the World for free. For calls to and from landline or mobile phones, you need to purchase Skype Credit. More details are available here. We’ve created a brief video with John Koller, senior marketing manager for PSP, to show you how to get started.

  • I think this is a cool, much-needed feature, but it completely sucks that it only works with the original PSP. This functionality is the kind of stuff promised to PSP users from the very beginning… It would be nice to be rewarded for waiting rather than be asked to buy a new system.

  • Great! Keep these firmware updates coming :)

  • Skype on the PS3 would simply be awesome. That would be one killer ap for sure in my eyes.

  • YEAH YEAH YEAH! SONY YOU ROCK! BEST UPDATE EVER!

  • @29

I do not pirate games, I am just showing that there are some people that did believe that Sony could do better.

  • Need to not forget your loyal early adopters Sony. At least let us have Skype chat.

  • fw4.00 is coming up…

But I have mirror previous comments- it does suck that we early adopters got shafted. But that’s the way it goes with technology.

  • So, it requires the PSP headset remote, which only comes with the original PSP fat; but the Skype service only works on the PSP-2000+? Right…

  • Any chance this feature may cross over to the PS3 and let PSP users and PS3 users chat over PSN? It would mean that even if the PSP dose not ever get a feature like Home they could still do things like talk to their PS3 owning friends and chat over Wi-Fi.

Also if Home dose come soon as the Sony reps have said many times in the past it would be nice to be able to get chat notifications if you get a VOIP chat request from both a PSP, or a PS3. Then make it so they can all be in the same chat room. It would just bring the two systems togather as well as make PSP users feel like they are part of the PlayStation community.

As it is now both sides can be kinda bitter two one another. If you came up with a system like this it would bring the PlayStation community togather and mean the over all user base for PSN would more than double over night with the update.

The PSP remote and headset are both sold as seperate add ons as of 2005. If you don’t know that you need to check your local Best Buy, GameStop, or EB games store as they have been out for us to get for over 3 years. You can still get the old ones at Amazon if you need them.

In fact here is a link to what you seek:

For the PSP-2000 remote add on:

    http://www.amazon.com/PSP-2000-Headphones-Remote-Control/dp/B000VBI5IW/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1201710536&sr=1-9

    And for the PSP-2000 Headset:

    http://www.amazon.com/Sony-711719852704-PSP-Headset/dp/B000C3MKFI/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1201710602&sr=1-19

Next time please make sure your info is correct and don’t diss Sony for things you know nothing about.

  • Where does one obtain the remote? My white Star Wars PSP-2000 didn’t come with one

  • Get them on Amazon! Dirt cheap and they work! BTW you don’t need the PSP Phat version of the remote, plus it won’t fit in the PSP-2000 models out pout plug anyway. Get the PSP-2000 version it’s better has better sound and rocks!

You can also find the headset add on there as well.

  • I do feel a little dis-enfranchised because this is not supported on the original PSP.

  • awww some can the new firmware be downloaded rite now?or do we have to w8 4 it?

thanks Sony work on the Java updates and flash updates next!!!

Sign in is FREE and NO REGISTRATION needed..

  • Nope not interested Thats Spy-Ware from Europe and SCEA..No Thank..I don’t need them to get my Phone number its definitely now Big Brother invading your own Territory in America?.Well thats crap all crap!..Hurry with 2.11 I want my XMB music for my games and an Instant Chat Messenger Client Like the 360 has! And really Where is Keyboard support as well?.

  • Cool feature but you left out one critical element- Just like remote play, The PSP skype app ignores proxy settings. Funny that I can pull up skype on my PC, but not on my PSP at work. Both remote play and Skype ignore proxy settings for some reason- I’d really like to see them support both http and socks proxies in the future.

  • what about FAT PSPs? As in PSP-1000 series?

  • Hi. Why that sony not updated the flashplayer on PSP and PS3? An browser without flashplayer updated serves as a little

  • made a call from holland to the phillipines and it worked great :-D

  • oh and kids.. YOU DON”T NEED THE REMOTE.

  • Wheres the Bluetooth!?!?!? theres goot be some kind of adapter you can make.

  • Ok, this has pushed me over the edge. I need a PSP asap. It’ll be one heck of a compliment to my PS3.

  • I honestly think more effort should be put into allowing those who bought the original PSP to use this.

I know that the RAM is an issue and much code optimization would need to be done to keep from losing voice quality, but even with a loss of quality people would still prefer to have this available to them.

It is an amazing feature, and one that makes buying the PSP truly worthwhile for those without an interest in games. But more importantly it can rekindle an interest in the system for those who have one, or want to buy a used unit and get into the scene.

You really are leaving the rest of us out in the cold on this one, and making it seem that the PSP Slim is a PSP 2, not just a revision like the PSone was to the Playstation, the PSP Slim to the PS2; it has become a your next gen portable and seems like it isn’t marketed as such because it doesn’t have better graphics over the PSP.

  • Cool feature, but Im not buying a new PSP for it.

  • It worked once and then it said you need skype credit after it worked.. wow.

  • Sony,

Can you please continue to try and make it work with the old PSP? I bought the old PSP just before the new one hit not knowing that you were making a new one. You’ve pretty much just told us that now you’re going to be supporting the new PSP and are going to leave the old PSPs in the closet by not giving any new features in the 3.90 update to the old PSP. Why did you even release it for the old PSP? You guys are screwing up more and more.

  • Or hell why don’t you guys just take my PSP back for a full refund so I can by a PSP slim? Yeah right like Sony would do that.

  • @78

Sony is in a desperate position, for both PSP and PS3. In June 2007, PS3 was $600. 1 model, $600. By November 2007, merely 5 months later, PS3 was only $399, WITH Spiderman 3($30 value) AND 5 Blurays via mail($125 value). They didn’t even acknowledge all those that paid so much extra.

With PSP, they’re getting their arses kicked by DS. However they try spinning it, they’re getting raped. They’re trying to maximize revenue by making the old version obselete and forcing people to buy the new ones. I mean, let’s be honest, not many people are buying games, so Sony’s trying to get them to buy hardware, such as consoles and accessories.

Sony can barely do anything right. I remember Jack Tretton saying in March that they were not going to drop the price for a long while. I remember him saying that content will rule and Sony will convince consumers to buy it at a high price point. Obviously he was wrong and desperate, as seen by the $400 price point and 6 free bluray discs at a $155 value.

  • Many people will be pisst, stop sacrificing consumer loyalty

    SKYPE ON ALL PSP MODELS!!!!!

  • So this is where Sony hands out gift cards to us players who paid 300 for the PSP on the first day? Right? No? Well thanks for screwing us loyalists over.

  • Wow. This is AWSOME. Now a little too much but maybe a 1month promotion to reach landlines for free?

  • whoa, you people need to shut up (sorry to say that) already about having the 1000 model psp. At least you didn’t pay $700 for a ps3. Which would be going for about $400 I paid $700 dollars to get it earlier than most people and that was it. I didn’t get some extra game or some stupid discount for being an early adopter. Yeah, I was mad, but obviously I got over it. Quit crying about it and sell your psp-1000 on ebay and turn around and use the difference to buy a new psp-2000. Geez…. You’ll be paying less for the system now than when you bought it back in ’05.

  • Will we ever be able to add our own icon to show up on skype friends list?

  • @ C-h-a-o-s : download Skype on your PC and then you can choose your default picture from a much wider selection they have on there. Or you can browse your PC and choose the best picture you have of yourself! LOL.

  • This looks really good! I’m going to use this fearture alot!

Oh and I think they should remake Legends of Dragoon!

  • So do older model PSP not support Skype?

  • now having the PSP Eye toy in the U.S. would be nice! can we make this happen SOON?!

  • @ Scodo_Thope – that’s right the PSP 1000 (older version) does not support Skype. I bundled mine with a movie and a game and sold it on eBay. Turned that profit around a bought the new black PSP. I highly suggest switching to the new PSP as I believe more features will become readily available due to the new PSP’s added ram and am afraid that the old one will be quickly fazed out. :(

    Peace,
    Lh

  • When is the PS3 update cuming

  • Any chance that the psp interface will match the PS3 interface soon? Particularly, typing using an onscreen qwerty and adding Album information so that we can organize our media files.

  • oookkkk

Just tell me… the skype we can’t have it for the ram or because of the flash memory? because all psp will have GoMessenger and have even videochat too… but oh wait… it works only in pal psps!!! so I can’t have that either….

  • TY for leaving me out in the cold sony.
I dont have a slim psp so i cant enjoy this new cool fet. And reading this kinda feels like a slap in the face to all of us with fat psp’s.

So now i ask my self even if i go and buy a new slim psp whats to say you wont make a even newer psp that will then have options the slim psp wont.

Sooo…..what else can the slim do that my fat cant? Since you seem to love to rub my face in it.

    Hmmmm………………………………………………………………
Sad sad day for a loyal sony fan :(

  • @ 85 lakaihigh

thanks for the tip, much appreciated.

  • @83 we have ever right to be pissed of.
And btw i did pay $600 for my ps3 only 2 mnths befor the price drop sooooo…i kinda feel screwed there to.
So take you ass kissing some where else cuz i can be as mad as i want to be.Its a free country.

  • This is great and all, but I would like to see sony finally produce some of the things that have been known to us folks for like a year…

One of the big things that comes to mind is Home. Sure, you guy are working on it, but your also working on things like this and Skype was released in the same month it was announced. However, we have been waiting for Home for almost a year!

Think about that, a year vs a month… I know Home takes more coding, I love to program as well. Making my programs gives me much joy. However, its not not a good practice to get everyone excited about Home and then leave us hangin. Both with news and with the release of Home.

I love my PS3. However, I believe one of the reasons for it failing to the amount that it does is due to all these hanging ends… Next being exclusive games that use the full power of the PS3 to produce an amazing experience, gameplay, online, replay-ability, value, and graphics. Graphics being last for a reason.

Please Sony, I really want the PS3 to flourish!

  • great updateThanks Sony.

  • u can only install skype on the psp 2000 or on any psp

  • So I wonder about why the author of this blog won’t reply. Usually the author of a blog answers questions, whatever. But see Sony? There are so many people that you’re shunning aside in this desperate move… I really don’t want to exchange my PSP anyways, which was a gift to me for Christmas a couple years ago, don’t make the originals go to waste.

  • @ WTFWTF – dude I felt the same way when Sony released the slim PSP here. I had my original “fat” PSP on the first day it came out. I fell in love. then sony released the psp slim and the features are awesome. i fell in love all over again. it may not have much more features than the original PSP but it definatly was worth it to me to sell my PSP on eBay and then turn around and buy the new slim.

i’m sure that in due time Sony is going to be releasing a third much improved psp. Its inevitable man. change is inevitable. the psp is a tiny powerhouse now that has a cap on its abilities. Things sony could include in the next psp:

    2nd analog stick
    perhaps L2 R2
    built in mic
    built in camera/video
    built in keyboard/touchscreen keyboard

all im saying is that if you feel you’re going to be missing out on stuff you really want taht the new slim psp has to offer then go upgrade. you won’t regret it, until they release a newer one that will be packed with even more features.

    Peace,
    Lh
