GDC: PlayStation Blogger Lounge Wrap-up (Part 1)

122 6

PlayStation.Blog @ GDC

If you’ve been wondering (aloud, some of you), where this Blog’s GDC updates have been – well even the best laid plans can be crushed under the treads of mighty Flu Season. Rest assured, once my temperature drops under 100 F (fingers crossed), I’ll make an effort to get answers to those questions you were nice enough to send in last week.

On the opposite side of the coin, our PlayStation Blogger’s Lounge was a success in that it allowed dozens of media outlets access and time to post hundreds of stories on GDC developments such as Insomniac’s Nocturnal initiative, Sony’s PhyreEngine graphics engine, and hands-on impressions of flOw PSP, echochrome, and GT5: Prologue with the new Logitech Driving Force GT wheel.

So much thanks to sites like Kotaku, Joystiq (and their affiliated Fanboy sites), Destructoid, GameSpot, Gamervision, IGN, Level Up, MTV’s Multiplayer, and everyone else who dropped on by over the past few days.

Sidenote: it’s becoming clear that we need to re-institute our policing of the comments area. A number of you have mentioned that they’re sick of wading through unrelated requests that have begun creeping back into nearly every blog post. So, keep it on topic, people! We don’t enjoy banning people as much as you might think (we’ve really only done it like 10 times in the history of the blog).

If there’s something off topic you’re itching to talk about, send it to the Contact Us link on the right side of the blog (we read them!), or take it to the ever-present boards. Thanks!

  • Hey Jeff! Hope you feel better man, I’m watching some GDC highlights with a friend online over the PS3, but I have a BADDDDDDD Stomach ache. So I know how you feel, and when your sick man you just wanna kick back relax and hope that it just goes away eh!

Anyways, I sent a thought out through the Contact Us Button, but I cannot send it as it says “Your remarks are invalid”.

I will post these thoughts here instead, and hopefully you will be able to read this and send a reply:

Hello, thanks in advance for reading. First off, I’d like to say I am glad that you are still keeping the PSP and PS2 alive with content and wonderful hit titles (like Patapon for PSP and God of War 2 for the PS2 just to name a few). Also, the PS3 keeps on getting these awesome titles. There is just something I am, and I’m sure many are itching to here even a comment about: In-Game XMB. Even if its small details about it’s release, what you are capable of doing in this feature and other things. Also, Playstation HOME. Many are looking forward to it. Can we get a bit of a refresher on the blog here? A run-down of some of the features, and some of the features not everyone knows about?

Also, just a suggestion for the PSP. I see that the PSP will be making it’s way to the Playstation Store, in a sense where you can access the Store right from your PSP over Wi-Fi. Firstly, this is an AMAZING feat. But secondly, you guys may have already thought of this. But this would complete the PSP: Incorporate the PLAYSTATION NETWORK with the PSP. That will be the best thing ever done on a handheld. The possibilities begin to truly be endless with this feature, I’m able to access and manage my friends, text message and everything right from the handheld. That would be awesome. The great thing is, this will create a strong bond with the PSP and PS3 over the Playstation Network. It’s something that should be considered. Thank you for reading, once again. I hope you are able to respond to me or our fellow Playstation Gamers over the blog.

  • ok Jeff maybe you can get this info rightly fix.first i want to wish you a get well soon.Second did we just lose final fantasy 13 and final fantasy13 vs as playstation 3 exclusion?Third does the ps3 have any exclusion that we dont know about?I know u cannt give away names but i just want to know if there some we dont know about a yes or no would be fine.

  • Jeff to break your fever:
you need to take a luke-warm bath that slowly goes to cold. It’s the only way.

Drink alot of Tea also (orange peko) it will helpp. No milk but with honey.

Now GDC 2007 Rocked the Gaming industry. Sony did that.
This year however was a real disappointment for all your fans.

Now Jeff, i appreciate the fact that you’re one of My better employees and you listen to your REAL BOSSES.(US)

You did however mention Home and “next week” in one of your replies to people. That was Monday I think. We all know that developing something to be great to hang out in takes time. But I see games that are fantastic looking being done in under that time. 2-3 years is a long time from initial idea to deployment. A long time. Thank so much for getting the PAIN CONTENT up on the store tonight. That was very GREAT OF YOU ALL and your listening skills.

I know that we all seem really mad, you and the rest of the blog administration must be sick of all the hate mongering and just plain disregard for rules.
Sorry to do that to you all but really IF you were just one of us,
How would you feel about it all?
Work hard to buy a very expensive console. wait for initial promises ( on the media poster released in 2004) only to have delays.

To properly answer that you have to forget who you are,

the job you have and think like a regular everyday person who plays those games.

Then you can maybe understand our collective frustration. Maybe next week will be real different. Who knows? You maybe. We sure don’t

I LOVE SONY AND PLAYSTATION. I LOVE my New Ericsson Phone, My original 1st gen. Anti skip Discman( that still works) I love each of my FOUR PSP’s, psp pen, psp hat, psp shirt, ps3 shirt, ps3 pen. My nine 2 gig sony memsticks. MY PS3,
sixaxis and my current games.I Love all the DLC that I have paid for.
If Sony made a CAR I’d BUY THAT TOO!!

What I don’t love is not knowing and waiting….

I hope you feel better soon.

There was this one HOT PICTURE of a Female Dev. Did you take that for moi?

( Yes I’m still trying to get you into trouble. It’s my Hobby now.)

P.s. I wouldn’t be posting in here as much if I had ****. The suffering has to stop soon for both of us…..

  • I will die of patience, In game xmb, and or Home Is all I ask for.

  • So GDC is over and you guys have yet to release news on dualshock 3 in North America or even mention a new SKU for the PS3 which has backwards compatibility. Thats really disappointing.

  • GDC is over and we heard nothing yet lol. I hope ya get better soon Jeff! We’re realllllllly desperate for news dude :(

  • I also want to add this paragraph taken from

Now, WHAT WE’VE LEARNED, PERHAPS THE HARD WAY, is that a blog like this IS really ABOUT YOU AND THE THINGS OU WANT TO HEAR, SHARE AND DISCUSS WITH US.

. With that in mind, you’ll notice that comments are enabled – “AND ENCOURAGED” – so tell us WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE HERE and we’ll DO OUR BEST TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. And yes, like most blogs, we have a comment policy, please just keep this in mind when you’re leaving a comment.

We imagine it may TAKE US A SHORT WHILE to find our pace with this, but bear with us as we get underway and we promise we’ll quickly make this blog a VALUABLE STOP in your daily info hunt for PlayStation news.

Like we’ve said, we’re excited to finally have a platform for conversation and connection. Much more is in the works too, so we hope you’ll consider sticking around, kicking the tires of our shiny new blog and SHARING WHAT YOU THINK.

    Enjoy!

  • @Not at PSP Guy, good points, but to those directly complaining about GDC.

Let’s take a moment to see: What does GDC mean? It Stands for GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE. Not Game Digging Conference for everything to be annouced conference.

sony annouced some huge stuff for game developers, namely Ph….whatever it’s called, and the online thing. Also, Insomniac came out with Nocturnal, as explained in the blog post. This conference is not for. That’s Sony Gamer’s Day, or E for All, or E3, or Tokyo Game Show.

You don’t have a right to complain that Sony didn’t annouce anything at GDC.

That said: Jeff hope you feel better, and have a grea day.

  • Also, why can’t I respond to the post about the EoJ cards?? It says I’m not logged in even though I am, and when I click to log in it gives me 404 error.

  • I also hope your sickness wont last long (btw that goes to all guys that comment here with the same stuff).
Thanks for the PlayStation Lounge updates, while i must admit i hoped for some stuff like PrePaid cards for Europe (i want to buy something from the Store lol) i really enjoyed what you guys did here!

  • Believe me I have been reading up on the development libraries and engines that they are implementing in upcoming titles. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not technically dumb or anything. I really enjoyed the video earlier today on another site of that game with the invisible monster and you keep track by way of it’s interaction within it’s own environment. that I would buy at the store. that is innovation if you ask me. That is Next Gen ( btw Hate buzzwords, too cliche) if you really think about it. They mocked how it “would be the worst selling game ever”. put that on the store tomorrow and I bet you’d have a million downloads in 24 hours. It looked like immense FUN. The GDC didn’t really suck for the developers that got to attend. They got to learn new strategies for building games. Got to share ideas and troubles. of which No doubt they found some solutions. the GDC also Helps to bring them all closer together, because really. there is only one goal there. that is to DEVELOP ie: evolve.

I’m thankful of the hard work and devotion to come. Thankful for the hard work already done.
Sorry if I haven’t shown my appreciation in a while but after reading how much information has transpired over the last week. it is comforting to know. Our games and entertainment are really in great hands.
I hope the rest of you can agree on that.
I wish you all great success this year.

  • Hey Jeff, we’ve talked before if your remember. First off, I hope you feel better, I just got over a cold which I thought was bad, I could imagine what you must be going through. =/

Anyway, regarding what everybody wants most, which are PlayStation Home and In-Game XMB, I think people are requesting this so much is because in an IGN preview a while back (http://youtube.com/watch?v=VszZ_63Ap8I) and at an Game Developers Conference a while back, in-game XMB was shown and every was excited that they’d be able to access the console features while in-game. It’s been a bit over a year, and we still are not able to do that, or send game invites to our friends either in-game or cross.

I have a comment to make about the PlayStation Store as well (I hope I’m not making your day worse =\ Just want to get it out). It seems every update we receive is just something thrown together while the other service is getting movies every other day, TV shows, and always get demos such as the Turning Point demo (which we still haven’t received) before us. Top of that, most of the PlayStation community hate that the store isn’t built in but is just a web page. Also the fact that we only get updates on Thursdays. Whats worse is every Thursday, there is just disappointing moans on forums across the internet. Try talking to Sony about that please. =]

Also, regarding things like gamer profiles (which are so blank) and the fact that we cannot view players avatars or if their online or anything about them if their not our friends is kind of lame. We would like to customize our online experience and meet new friends easily. Also, about accomplishments (which we know are coming, I mean, they showcased it with Home), they will be integrated into old games, right?

Please, shed some light on these subjects because I think the PlayStation community has been patient enough. Almost a year in a half is a wait on my watch. Thanks Jeff, and I hope you feel better!

  • Are you guys finished. No disrespect to anyone, but GDC is for Developers not for news such as gaming. Microsoft had a Keynote this year, thus they were able to talk about new stuff as far as the the company goes, Sony did not. Sony had their Keynote last year, in which they announced great stuff.

As far as info, really what did Microsoft do, XNA and Gears is an exclusive? Not by a long shot did they “Show up” Sony. Obviously this is evident, because if they did, you guys wouldn’t be so ridiculously adamant about Sony not releasing the info on in game XMB and Home. Obviously you guys are bound to this, as opposed to gravelling over MS and what they’ve shown. Hell Xbox is having their problems as well, mainly the new topic where Bionic Commando Rearmed is going to be the better version visually, because of MS’s limiting Arcade games to 150 MB. What are we complaining about? Home and In-Game XMB, both that will be available this year and probably soon. I can see if we were arguing something that was relevant like the PS Store lacking and such, however we are talking about technical application that if something goes wrong can do away with your enjoyable experience and even so much as fry your PS3 if something technical goes wrong. I’d rather wait for a complete version, that I don’t have to wait for to get patched to enjoy. Yes its a sacriface, because I want the stuff as soon as possible as well, however we can’t get what we want all the time.

In Game XMB and Home will be available in due time. I find it ridiculous that we have to be pest about the same thing over and over and in the end the same results occurs of we just have to wait. It’ll be better if you wait cooperatively.

  • Get well soon Jeff!!

  • Sorry you feel crappy Jeff- hopefully this news will brighten your day-

XBOX 360 RROD in middle of GDC presentation! LOL!

did you hear about that? funny stuff…except for everyone with an older 360!

I know there are alot of people upset right now with the progress of HOME and ingame XMB..but most sane people know it’s not your fault and besides you’d probably be fired for letting something slip your boss doesn’t want out of the bag yet-

I DO have this feeling that sometime SOON big announcements are coming our way! So I can be patient…to a point!

    cheers!

  • First off, get better quick Jeff. You’re a very important man to us.

Sadly, I think there problem here is bigger than you think (about keeping things on topic). If this is the case then you’re going to have to ban over half of the users on this blog. I’m all for waiting just a tad bit longer (I’m hoping that it REALLY pays off in the end). Your problem here is just going to grow.

Love the playstation brand, but…You guys need to deliver the goods here soon. Soon as in before the end of April…

  • You know, my mom said it best.

“If you don’t have anything nice to say, then it’s best not to say anything at all.”

Since HOME will only be build .0.8.3 next week, it’s simple to say, “They ain’t done with it.”

As far as In-Game XMB goes. We’ll get it when it’s done. The PS Blog will update at 9:23a.m. pst on a Wednesday morning and say, “New Firmware available.” It won’t say, Firmware was ready to install since 11:43 p.m. on Tuesday.

This all being spring or F1Q Sony.

Sony really dropped the ball at this GDC.

  • @ Jeff

First of all, get well soon!

Can you give a call to whomever are responsible for U.S./EU PlayStation Store to put more PS1 games, demos, or game trailers like Japan PS Store?

Can we expect Sony to bundle an official headset for PS3 anytime soon?

When can we expect a new bundle for PSP? (Daxter, amd Star Wars is NOT appealing at all!) OR is the rumor true about PSP Phone?

    Please reply.

  • Wow, people are really starting to lose it over those “two main features”. It doesn’t just seem to be the fringe weirdos either. It’s like all the sane posters who want them are starting to have had enough and are acting up as bad as the rest.

All I can say is that I’m happy you guys are doing all you can and I know it’ll be ready when it’s ready, but boy things are slowly going crazy!

Maybe it’s the post-christmas game drought?

  • Everyone loves you Jeff, that’s why all your posts average around 4.5 – Whether or not you think of yourself as only the Social Media Manager, to thousands and thousands of readers on this blog, you are the face and voice of SONY. Keep kicking ass and knocking over those MS display stands.

  • Why the hell is everyone getting sick lately? My brother, my sister-in-law, my girlfriend, my buddy in Vegas, and now you. I’m feeling left out.

Anyway, hope you get better soon. Try some Vitamin C and Echinesha. Strengthens your immune system.

  • You are all sick, but it is an illusion of the mind. i never think that I am sick ergo i never get sick. which means no sick days at work. I mean Never.

Jeff is the face of PlayStation. That’s a BIG JOB and ALOT OF RESPONSIBILITY. ( i am not shouting, we need a bold and italics for the posts in comments here. and underline, strike out.) Thanks Jeff You are the Best. Maybe we should start a Jeff Fan Club!

  • Hey Jeff, what kind of degree do have and how did you nail this job? I would love to have a job like you do someday.
(I’ll be checking this comment everyday for your response :P )

  • Dude, you are sick. Why are you still making posts, lol?

    Get better soon.

  • @ 72, start one in Home ;-) but first Sony needs to release it to us XD haha

So Jeff…I’m assuming nothing on Dualshock 3 for North America @ GDC?

Do you have any idea when we’ll get any details regarding that? Sony Gamers Day? E3 2008? PR Ninja ready to assassinate you if you say something?

And get well soon if you haven’t already! Sorry to hear about your flu, hope it didn’t ruin your GDC expierence *too much*

  • @72 i agreed we should start a fan club it be funny

  • and jeff please answer my post this is wondering me cause it was my main reason for jumping onto the ps3 side over xbox 360 and i was hoping to use final fantasy 13 get alot of my freinds to buy the ps3

  • A Jeff Fan Club? Interesting . . . although I’m not sure if that’d be flattering or creepy.

  • @ thatpspguy – yeah you start a jeff fan club! how cool are you man? really, get a life.

thanks for posting even though your sick man! that’s dedication. i look forward to seeing some of those questions answered in your next post. till then,

    peace,
    Lh

  • I hope you feel better soon Jeff! If you have the chance I would love to see some information about PhyreEngine.

  • I’m sorry, but I still don’t think these bloggers should have been treated better than anybody else — they certainly aren’t journalists. A lot of these places named in the post are the quickest to trash Sony the first second they think they can, as well.

Secondly, regarding these comments about Sony’s “showing” at GDC… plain & simple, your opinion doesn’t matter. This is a DEVELOPER’S conference, not an exhibit for us to see stuff coming up. Be glad we got/saw what we did.

    Get well soon, Jeff! :)

    Cheers!
    – Matthew

  • The contact us link is BROKEN IE IT DOES NOT WORK so it is USELESS

  • I’M POSTING THIS AGAIN FOR THE SECOND PAGE – HAVE YOU NOTICED HOW THEY NEVER REPLY TO NEGATIVE POSTS?

this pretty much sums up how i feel about GDC

    http://frag-cast.blogspot.com/2008/02/sony-gdc-2008-news.html

Sometimes you guys communicate and it feels like you really ‘get it’ and others you get it so wrong it makes the times you get it right seem like a fluke.

Jeff it must be hard staying positive in the face off all these negatives comments..!

fact is though, we are the people that engage with this brand, and we are the people that can make or break it… given that the wii is running away with the mainstream, sony seems happy to upset the hardcore.

Did something go wrong at gdc? was there meant to be more?

Is this blog just turning into a mouthpiece? Are you going address any of the issues raised about GDC in a post?

It’s all well and good saying that GDC is a developer event… if that’s the case you shouldn’t have made consumer announcements there last year.

If home really is due in spring, then why isn’t there a decent schedule in place?

I’ve never felt so much like Sony misjudged the mood of fans… it got so much better last year after E3… and now you’ve not delivered on all the talking you did back then.

WHY CANT YOU ADDRESS THE XMB ISSUE PROPERLY? Is it so hard to get someone to come on the blog and talk candidly about why it’s taking so long?

Instead it feels like you guys are starting to turn this into a moutpiece by saying people can’t comment on things that are off topic…. the fact that people keep talking about the same issues is not something you should hide from by threatening with the ban-stick – that goes against the very ethos of this blog.

If you are open and honest about the issues and TRUE timings of things, then all these comments will evaporate. Thats not rocket science, is it?

  • “A number of you have mentioned that they’re sick of wading through unrelated requests that have begun creeping back into nearly every blog post.”

This is pretty much because comments/requests about things like in game XMB, a Home release schedule, Canadian pricing differences, a response about Sony’s region locked DLC issue etc. go pretty much ignored by everyone at Sony. If Sony did not ignore them and addressed the issues in a public manner there would be no need to spam every blog post in order to get attention.

  • Hey Sony! Guess what !? I did it. I don’t know why I did it, all I know is that I went to the store to buy the VGA cable for my Xbox 360 and six hours later my eyes were bleeding and a big, beautiful, largely useless black spaceship was parked in my living room. :)

One of my friends first reaction was, and I quote: “You actually bought one of those doorstops?” Followed quickly by: “I wish you could see that my eyes just rolled back completely in my head and then back around again.” Followed by: “Be sure to write about the PS3.” So I am and I thought I’d post my thoughts on here so you all you guys can read it. :D

So where to start ? Let’s do this sanely:

System & Interface: The system is very well built. You can tell Sony built the system with utmost care and craftsmanship. There have been very few reported cases of systems breaking down or malfunctioning. And it should be noted that Sony’s warranty for the system is a full one year.

The system does blow slightly hot air out though. This may raise a red flag, but it’s nothing to be worried about so long as you keep the system well ventilated and give it some space. The system runs extremely quiet as well.

The design of the system leaves something to be desired at first glance (especially seeing it only in pictures). The logo is a breakaway from the past cleaner-looking PlayStation brand logos and looks out of place and makes me wish Sony went with a more traditional font. However, after owning the system for a few days now, I have come to appreciate its look in the vertical position. I really enjoy the chrome trim.

The hardware includes a Blu-ray drive, which plays blu-ray games and movies, DVDs, and CDs. You also have USB ports, in which you can connect the controller into or any other supported device. There is a hard disk drive included that lets you save content such as playable demos, trailers, save data from games, videos (MP4s, etc.), music (MP3s, etc.), and so forth. You can also partition the hard drive to install the Yellow Dog Linux OS, which adds more functionality to the PS3, in witch I’m not going to do.

Controller: While it’s more or less the same in terms of its looks and buttons, the PS3’s wireless SIXAXIS controller, to me, is a step down in terms of functionality and design compared to the DUALSHOCK2 controller. We all know by now about the lack of rumble, but it’s just “missing” something in the middle, and looks too naked compared to the PS2 controller. The L2 and R2 triggers are also designed differently and first impressions made me think of the word “flimsy” and “cheap” as to how they are to be pressed down. However, after getting used to pressing those buttons while playing Resistance, it’s now become second nature. Still, I do wish the design of the controller had incorporated more in the middle from an aesthetic standpoint.

At least in the middle you do have a PlayStation Family Logo button, which looks nice. When yo

@ thatpspguy – yeah you start a jeff fan club! how cool are you man? really, get a life.

Does sony ever look at these bloggs and post cuz they really should? just a qestion.

  • thanks for the heads up on things and i hope you feel better Jeff

  • I love SONY, I really do. But i’m tired about all this. Even if the in-game XMB and HOME are not ready to be released, why don’t tell us?

We need more transparency. Talk to us and I assure you we will be more understanding.

It’s ready? Say it! It’s not ready? Why?!!
Are we really asking too much?

    Thank you.

  • Oh and … take some rest buddy! lol

  • This is for everyone thats curious if…

Many of you may not understand the info below, but it’s basically showing me how that website has it’s DNS pointed etc. So essentially i can see who hosts the site, who does DNS etc.

This website has nothing to do with sony. So yes it appears fake. Only reason it could be true is if the guy has a very close friend to sony who passed him some info. I highly doubt that though.

My research on Karl Ringman just shows he’s a man amused with creating flash based websites.

  • @ thatpspguy – I don’t think you were kidding man. I seriously think you want to start a fanclub for someone that you don’t even know, in your dream world you think you know him only because he replies on his blog posts? wow. so you quit being a ‘big rock star’ to post diligently on the playstation blog in hopes of getting a reply from sony. i get it. and since your soooo cool and people like you cuz you treat others fairly why do you need to start with the name calling? what a hipocrate. crawl back into the cave you came out of troll. you’re such a twat man. like i said b4 get a life. go back to your rock star life style and travel the world with your groupies that consisted of homosexual men.

    peace,
    Lh

Jeff don’t fret this will pass. Lots of fliuds a blanket and of course a PS3 to keep you alert. It would have been nice to get something going with “HOME”. That would have kept you busy for a while. But I have to say as far as GDC this year Ifeel It should have been renamed MSGDC. Microsoft had so much more going on. The one thing many wanted to here about (“HOME”) was nill. There are so many boards now with people angry. Try to get a bit of info out for us and maybe it will stop the negatives. We need home and we need it soon. Winning the HD DVD BluRay war was not really news it was common sense. If Sony can get “home” going it will possibly cripple the others. I do hope that E3 is better because GDC was a let down. Sony wasn’t even in the back seat.

  • SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GIVE US A DATE FOR THE DUALSHOCK3 AND PSN CARDS!!!!

  • not-buying-incognito

all I care about is Total usage of In-Game-XMB

  • Sony,

Please please please, get rid the media file size limit. Ever since Firmware 2.0, everytime I try to stream a video (size 700MB+) onto my PS3 it will freeze halfway through. This never used to happen before this firmware. You’re essentially destroying our ability to stream media from Tversity or other media servers.

    PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP! PLEASE!

    Loyally yours,
Brian Paterson – Sony gamer for 10+ years
