Not every video game event is a press and party extravaganza (like last week’s GDC). As a gamer, you may not have heard of Destination PlayStation – a meeting between Sony PlayStation, retailers, and 3rd party teams taking place right now in Arizona. But the discussions at DPS are generally pretty significant. Here’s what’s being announced RIGHT NOW.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots PS3 Bundle
To coincide with the much-anticipated North American launch of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in late Q2 2008, SCEA will introduce a PS3 bundle, which will include an 80GB PS3, the upcoming blockbuster Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and a DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for $499.99 (MSRP).
As has been announced previously, MGS4 will include a Metal Gear Online “Starter Pack.” If you can’t wait to try out MGS4, the good news is you don’t have to much longer. Those who pre-order the game will be guaranteed access to a multiplayer beta test for Metal Gear Online scheduled for late April.
God of War PSP Entertainment Pack
In June, a new PSP Entertainment Pack will be hitting stores, featuring the famous face of the Ghost of Sparta — Kratos. Here’s what you get in the bundle, which will be available for $199.99 (MSRP):
- Limited-Edition “Deep Red” PSP with Kratos silkscreened on the back
- God of War: Chains of Olympus
- Superbad on UMD video
- Voucher to download Syphon Filter: Combat Ops from PLAYSTATION Store for free
God of War: Chains of Olympus still arrives for PSP on March 4, 2008.
DUALSHOCK 3
The final piece of big news coming out of DPS is another much-requested release date: SCEA will introduce the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for the first time in North America in April 2008 for $54.99 (MSRP). Compatible with more than 100 PS3 games, DUALSHOCK 3 has both rumble and motion-sending SIXAXIS technologies. So now you’ll be able to play Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and, yes, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots with rumble turned ON.
What i want to know is why it’s taken this long to get the DualShock3 here in North America? It’s been importable since it’s hit Japan. There’s absolutely no reason for this delay to North America.
Sony could have had sales booming if they release the controllers next week. Everyone is buying PS3’s now with blu-ray being the winner. Why not reward the customers now. Sales are now going to drop because people will wait for the new bundle.

Can I ask some specifics about the new 80GB, which I’m sure many people are thinking..
1/ Will the new 80GB have Playstation 2 compatability, to the same level of thecurrent US 80GB unit? (i.e. Software EE, hardware GS)
2/ Will the new 80GB have 65nm Cell, or be 90nm based like the current 80GB?
3/ Will the new 80GB have 4x USB ports and card reader slots?
4/ Will the new 80GB have SACD support?
Are there any differences in functionality between the current 80GB and the new 80GB?

The difference between the two is that the new 80GB can make toast.
One important question about the controller. Will there be different colors like white ?
Will this 80gb model be the same as the previous 80gb or will it have a 65nm Cell, revised wireless and Bluetooth, and the Aluminum Cooling fan that can all be found in the current 40gb PS3?

The MGS4 PS3 bundle is great news! I feel that Playstation 3 is finally on the right step and it’s going to pwn 2008. It is absolutely the ultimate bundle and I don’t see how anyone who doesn’t have a PS3 already wouldn’t want one.
Good job Sony! I always believed in you and, although, it was a struggle in the beginning, the PS3 has really held its own and can only triumph in the near future.
What I want to know is in regards to the PSP bundle…what if one has already bought Combat Ops? Are you SOL because you went and purchased it?
So if I pre-order MGS 4 right now, how does that verify that I’m in the MGSO beta? Do they hand me a pass code, authorization number or a demo disc?

And yet another week where the Rock Band content is out for the 360 long before PS3. Then there’s the 4 month wait for the DualShock3 – apparently Japan is more important to you than North America. It’s like you’re actively trying to make me focus my gaming budget on the 360 instead of the PS3.

Any news on whether or not those who pre-ordered MGS4 on Amazon ages ago will get access to the beta? I have noticed that Amazon does not always do the same pre-order specials that pure game shops do. Please let me know, so I can cancel my pre-order with Amazon and pre-order with somebody else if necessary, I must have access to this beta (best news for PS3 fans in a long time!)

Hello Al De Leon, do you know if Metal Gear Solid 4 that’s included in the MGS4 PS3 Bundle will have ‘NOT FOR RESALE’ written on it? I know Motorstorm (80GB Bundle) and Warhawk (Bluetooth Bundle) have it written on the game case. I really hope Metal Gear Solid 4 that’s included will not have that written otherwise I will have to buy a retail copy. A small thing like that is very important to a collector and huge metal gear fan like myself.
