Firmware v2.20 bringing BD-Live to PS3

380 0

Hi again everyone. Here’s a quick preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update coming up in the next few days. Firmware v2.20, introduces a number of features to further enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 as the hub of your entertainment center.

Most notably, the update enables the PS3 to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live. You can connect now to the Internet while playing discs that support BD-Live to obtain additional content and special features. These features vary from disc to disc, and will keep your BD discs fresh with new content and in some cases exclusive content only accessible to owners of BD-Live enabled discs. On April 8th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The 6th Day and Walk Hard on Blu-ray; these titles will be among the first to take advantage of BD-Live. With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality.

Here are some of the other new features/enhancements that will be included in Firmware v2.20:

  • The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.
  • You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB. In addition, you can now display subtitles when viewing DivX files.
  • Resume Play – begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.
  • Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.
  • The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media.

There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20 – we’ll provide more specifics as the update is about to go live.

Army of Two has it on the main menu as well.

    Hi

I would like to Thank you for all the Great firmware Updates but would of course like to make some suggestions. Don’t worry they have nothing to do with In-Game anything.

    1. Please fix things that got messed up or didn’t work in previous updates. For Example: The Remote Play Feature that was introduced in FW 2.00 was a great feature but never worked correctly for me and many others. Since in the FW 2.00 all it did for me was turn the PS3 on and off continually until I shut off the remote play feature. it was useless. Then comes along FW 2.01 and I think “ohh it’s fixed” but it wasn’t. It was simply a Stop-Gap Method by simply disabling the option of Remote play via the internet if your PS3 Turned on and off Continually. Now I really want to use this feature via the internet as that is what it is intended for really but can’t. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!

    2. Now I use the PS3 as a Media Hub like you would like us all too. I like many use the Tversity program to stream our Music, Photo’s & Video’s from our PC’s to our PS3’s. The Problem is that since FW 2.00 the PS3 has been misreading the time on the Files therefor cutting them off prematurely. For Example I have this 1 min video I like to watch and it stops prematurely at 13 secs. Too make sure weather it was the program or PS3 I decided to copy the files to the PS3 and it still stopped at 13 secs. So it has something to do with the PS3. It is really annoying to be streaming a TV show and it stop in the middle of the show because the PS3 thinks it is only 12 min long when it is 29 mins long. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!

    3. I would like to request support for the WPA2-PSK (AES) security setting for the PSP so I can have a uniform setting on my router. So as I don’t have to change my Security settings on my router everytime I want to update or play my PSP Wirelessly online.

I would like to Thank you Again on the Great Firmware updates but am hoping that in the Future you fix your previous updates before releasing new features. As much as I enjoy the new Features I want to be able to use them all in a working fashion.

    Wolf26pack

P.S. Can you please just leave a quick message saying you read it so I know that the Message got through, although if you want to leave a longer response I won’t complain.

    Thanks Again

  • I must say thx for the addition of subs. I’ll say it again. Thx. A lot.

Now we just need to know when 2.20 it’s gonna air. ;)

I guess before that two blu-ray movies ship in abril 8th. ¿Or i am wrong?

  • Yikes. I mean April…not Abril.

    I’m Spanish, you know. ;)

  • All I want is DTS-MA support

  • Bitstreaming of DTS-MA and TrueHD, if the PS3 cannot do this, please just tell us and we can move on.

  • XMB please. Thats what we want, to listen to music while we play sometimes. Add it already, we dont want screensavers. Want to save your screen turn your TV off. Thanks

  • Wow Sony, sounds like impressive update. Can’t wait to download this update when it’s released.Even though alot of PS3 users (including me) are desperately waiting for the “in game XMB” feature,im sure Sony is working hard on it & i think it’s going to come out in Firmware 2.40 sometime late July or August. If Sony’s serious about making the PS3 the unltimate entertainment machine, the “in game XMB” should be on it’s way soon.Look at how many cool feaures have been inlcuded so far from their previous updates (even though some of them to me are useless) & it’s only going to get better in the future. But until then all you PS3 uses, have patience.Keep up the good work Sony…..Playstation 3 ALL THE WAY 100%

  • I can’t see how anyone with another system can say they don’t need a HD format video player. Now that the PS3 is the only gaming console out there capable of current and new HD movies. Its a no brainer as to what system to buy.

  • This will be a great update since Blu Ray Live is cool idea

  • In-game xmb sound less possible every time I see a new firmware update.

  • Thank god for the resume play, I’ve been waiting for that for a while…

  • They really should just get rid of the build in browser and wack in Firefox. Why waste your time create a whole browser from scratch when you can get a damn good one for free with FULL source code?

    Sort it out Sony!

  • @OtisFeelgood

Maybe it’s my old tired eyes, but don’t you find the Army of 2 menus overly graphic (busy) and difficult to read?

  • Any chance on the Playstation 3 finally supporting output or internally decoding DTS-MA Decoding via Bitstream (HDMI).

  • @PsychoEddie

I dont think they’re difficult to read but they are overly graphic.

  • BD 2.0; Resume Play; Audio output setting added to Remote Play so I can use my PSP as a remote while listening to music on my home theatre system; Improved internet browser speed and functionality (hopefully upgraded/latest flash plug ins). This update sounds great.
Just add In game XMB; DTS MA; BD/DVD streaming to PSP during remote play; and ability to transfer/copy BD movies to a portable file playable on PSP. It would also be pimp to use the PSP as a remote for Blu-ray/DVD playback with digital remote control buttons displayed on the PSP screen you could navigate. It would be really useful in a dark home theatre seeing ad the PS3 BD remote does not have a back light.

  • Looking forward to this update, keep it up!

  • @253 Wolf26pack

    1) Your settings are incorrect or something because I’m able to connect to my PSP via remote play just fine.

    2) Your settings are wrong because I’m able to watch my videos from TVersity on my PS3 just fine. At first they were cutting off prematurely too but I did a search online and found that you had to make some adjustments to the resolutions on TVersisty.

    3) Again your settings are wrong because this is exactly what I use and have zero problems.

Just do some searches online and I’m sure you’ll find the solutions you need.

    :)

  • Blue Ray… Playlists… Resume Play… Divx…

    COMMMEEEE OOOONNNNNNN!!!!!!!

Is this thing a damn VCR or a gaming system?!!!? Let’s get on with the good features… features that will de-throne XBOX Live!

  • We want private voice chat in-game (like on 360)!

  • @neil and @wolfpack

I’ve been streaming using Windows Media Player 11 since launch, and since the divx update, I’ve been able to stream everything except for a few odd files with probably incorrect headers or something,

so, yes, it is just the settings in TVersity!

(I tried TVersity, but WMP11 was so easy to use!)

    cheers

  • I love frequent updates, please don’t wait to release finished features like, i dont know, if you got a clock ready before ingame xmb go ahead and release the clock, that would be awesome.

  • Great and significant update.

  • The PS3 is indeed future-proof. Nice work. Keep the firmware features coming!

  • Thanks for the update sony.

  • I’d like to see an increase in firmware updates.

  • @ Neil

Thanks for trying but I have been looking for a solution to this particular problem since it arose in FW 2.00. I have looked online,in Forums,Instructions etc etc etc… With no Avail though. I changed settings in my router and it only delayed the time it would take for the PS3 to turn back on automatically. It did not fix the problem. I may end up calling Sony tommorrow to see if they have any answers for this problem.

Ohh and just to make it clear I know how to get Remote Play Working it just keeps turning on the PS3 and then disables it via the internet, since it turns it on automatically. As for the Private Connection that works just as Advertised.

Now for my second problem many people on Tversity have been having this problem and I will try out your suggestion of lowering the resoultion to see if that solves my problem. The thing that bothers me though is that this problem started in FW 2.00 also and I had not changed any of the settings. Do you have any suggestions as to what resolution it should be at?

As for the 3rd problem it is more of a suggestion though, I am looking at my PSP as I type this and it does not have WPA2 as an option only WPA all I am requesting is that they add WPA2 to the Network settings for better security

    @frito

I too have used WMP and it works but I use Tversity because it can encode certain files on the fly that wouldn’t normally be compatiable with the PS3. The thing is that no settings were changed in Tversity but the min I updated the FW to 2.00 certain files didn’t play all the way through anymore. For Example I have a 30 sec gag reel and although it says it plays for 30 secs on the XMB when I go to play it and I hit select to see how long it is. It says it is only 13 secs and stops at that time. it plays fine on the computer in Tversity but not on the PS3.

Something definintly took a turn for the worst when FW 2.00 came out and I just hope Sony will fix it.

  • @161
i’m a pro, and i’ve already see these post @doom9 , and already done this.
But have you any clue WHY there are different level in h.264 ?

It’s because, if the level is bigger, then the option the stream can use are broader too (and bandwith also). And if you use an h.264 stream with these option, it’s just absolutely not playable.

Oh yes, i forgot : i don’t need any program since i’ve already my own script under linux, with mkvextract, ffmpeg and MP4Box etc…

And yes i’ve already done test with my own video. If it’s true this method can be ok for some stream, it isn’t for all stream.

To your opinion : why i’m not the only one to wish for better compatibility with video codec ?

But just continue to show that you doesn’t know what you are speaking and to explain how to do my job, it’s funny.

  • @161
Ps : here a link where developper of x264 explain why they use 5.1 and not 4.1
    http://mailman.videolan.org/pipermail/x264-devel/2008-January/003922.html

  • Hi thanks for the updates. It’s good to know they are coming on a regular basis.

Still there are some feature I’d really like to see implemented like:

    1. Automatic output channel matched to source: I have a 7.1 receiver and set the PS3 to output everything from 2.0 to 7.1 PCM. Let’s say you listen to a MP3, the PS3 outputs a fake 7.1 signal with just the L and R channels filled…That’s really annoying because I can’t add any processing on the receiver like PLIIx Music and going into the Sound output setting each time is just as much annoying…
The idea is for the PS3 to check the number of channels and then output the same thing!

    2. In the same context, you allow CDs played on the PS3 to be outputted at either native 44.1KHz or a multiple 88/176KHz with different upscale options. That’s great! But then again only limited to CD playback…can’t we have the same options for music played from the harddrive/network? Please?

    3. As others requested, HBR audio output via HDMI.

  • Hi i’ve had somo information that the firmware update will be on tuesday 25 march, is that correct!?
    Thanks in advance Eric Lempel.

  • icecoldkilla so many things I could say but I’ll keep it short and simple why would nintendo give their mascot (Aka Mario to Sony if it is old school play) thats like asking for halo from m$. The other features you mentioned most have already been discussed
    1: has not been
2: too each their own he has been discussed but I think Sony should get more of a control on the video games compared to giving us another version of itunes
3:namco classic museum works good but too each their own
4:probably going to be apart of in-game-xmb I’m betting but meh
5:summer and so on not really interested in spamming messages or having a text conversation when I’m trying to get into CoD4 online or whatever
    6:home

  • The “hub” of my entertainment system would include an infrared receiver for my universal remote control. This one still boggles my mind Sony.

  • I just have a simple question. Is it not possible to have an in game XMB? If so, let us know, I can guarantee we’ll stop asking.

  • There’s one important thing that’s missing from this update – full Divx support. It’s so frustrating that my Xbox 360 has better Divx support than my PS3. Please have that in the next firmware update along with in-game XMB, won’t you?

  • #5 already listed most of it so I’ll just echo his words in my post and also add: support for SUBTITLES in video files. Thanks Sony, We know you’re working hard.

  • Nevermind about the subtitles, my bad for not reading .

  • COME ON SONY! STOP GIVING THESE LAME

ASS UPDATES AND GIVE PEOPLE WHAT THEY

    WANT FOR EXAMPLE HOME,XMB, STORE

REDESIGN WITH MOVIES RENTALS ECT. ALSO

IMPROVEMENTS ON ONLINE VOICE CHAT DTS

AUDIO THESE OTHER UPDATES CAN WAIT.

  • THIS UPDATE SUCKS THIS CRAP CAN WAIT
WHAT ABOUT HOME XMB STORE REDESIGN!

  • @292

Store redesign is scheduled to debut before April 17. in-game xmb to come this summer, at least a Sony RP said it was coming with firmware 2.4….Home is definitely coming no later than June.

  • @292

One more thing. These update does NOT suck. Shut your trap and don’t post with caps locked, fool.

  • I just want expanded PS2 game support for the new PS2 games that have come out in the last few months on the 80GB PS3. I wish we still had the E-chip, but we don’t so these games should get support for them added.

  • Can you guys please add a way to message other people who are on your friends list but are not in the same game. That is all I want from an update. Not blu-ray live.

  • 1.Wireless 802.11n support for better video streaming and faster downloading of files.

    2. 5.1 support for my MPEG-4 movies.

  • @Wolf26Pack

hope you can get it working!

  • A feature request for the future Firmware:
In the Web Browser the ability to display correctly “Central European” encoded web pages (ISO-8859-2/Windows-1250). Thanks !
I wonder if the new DivX subtilte will support both boubdled multitrack and external subtitles ?

  • INCLUDE IN THAT UPDATE THE FEATURE OF BEING ABLE TO READ .ISO FILES THAT ARE LOCATED ON PCs

  • This is really an awesome update!

Still – it would be nice to see a 48p (24p frame doubling) option for those early adopters like me who spent a few thousand Euros on the 52X2000 (XBR2/XBR3 in the US).

Otherwise, keep up the good work, Sony!
