Firmware v2.20 bringing BD-Live to PS3

380 0

Hi again everyone. Here’s a quick preview of the next PLAYSTATION 3 system software update coming up in the next few days. Firmware v2.20, introduces a number of features to further enhance your PLAYSTATION 3 as the hub of your entertainment center.

Most notably, the update enables the PS3 to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live. You can connect now to the Internet while playing discs that support BD-Live to obtain additional content and special features. These features vary from disc to disc, and will keep your BD discs fresh with new content and in some cases exclusive content only accessible to owners of BD-Live enabled discs. On April 8th Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release The 6th Day and Walk Hard on Blu-ray; these titles will be among the first to take advantage of BD-Live. With this update, the PLAYSTATION 3 becomes the first Blu-ray player on the market with BD-Live functionality.

Here are some of the other new features/enhancements that will be included in Firmware v2.20:

  • The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.
  • You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB. In addition, you can now display subtitles when viewing DivX files.
  • Resume Play – begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.
  • Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.
  • The Internet browser now displays some web pages faster. In addition [Save Target] has been added as an option under file. This option lets you save a file that is linked to a web page to your PS3 hard drive or storage media.

There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20 – we’ll provide more specifics as the update is about to go live.

  • This great news… The few things that bothered me about the PS3 is the lack of BD/DVD playback and thats going to be fixed on the next update.. another thing was it didn’t support all DiVX and that issue will addressed in the upcoming update.. BD-Live!!! I’m so glad i bought a PS3.

  • look everything might be great but i think sony should add music playable during gameplay like xbox also latest flash player upgrade im tired of not able to accessed many site for flash player and more video codec like real etc. so it will be so great if u guys work more hard and do that for the future update

  • Firmware 2.40 which will release sometime in the summer will have In-Game XMB

  • “There are a few other tweaks and upgrades included in v2.20”

I hope Sony will add a clock that is shown in the top right corner when you press the ps-button on the Sixaxis ;)

  • Why doesn’t Sony include SSD-discs in their ps3:s?

  • Hey, thanks for letting us know about the update for the PS3! It sounds fantastic!!

Could you please introduce low power downloads which are energy saving so set your PS3 to turn off after it has downloaded everything in Download Management or even better automatically turn on the PS3 whilst in Standby when a Firmware Update is released, it downloads the FW to the HDD under the Game or Network Section in the Home Menu, then once its downloaded, the PS3 turns off and it is ready for the user to complete the update process when the user turns on the PS3 theirselves. It would save time and effort!

Apart from that, it is good to hear that you are providing BD Live to the PS3 way in advance of other BD Players!

  • Woohooooo!… DiVX Subtitles (for my foreign films) and ‘Save target’…. Sweet!…. Guess i will need to get a bigger HD!

  • I would just love it if a future update would let us output sound through the optical and HDMI at the same time. This way I wouldn’t have to switch the sound settings when I want to watch a movie through my home theatre that’s plugged in through the optical and just play a game and hear the sound through the tv by the HDMI.

  • you need to put a delete all function for messages and also make the controllers charge in stand by.

  • Hey Eric, Thanks for keeping us informed about updates, it definitely keeps us in the loop, which I feel is important. When Customers felt left out they tend to lash out and go stir-crazy. Anyway, I was wondering if there is, or if there could be an official channel for proposing firmware improvements. I know that SCEJ is who does most of the firmware programming, however I have a few minor suggestions that I think would be good and simple to implement in future versions of the firmware. Anyway, I’m posing this on an old blog so I doubt anyone is going to end up reading this.

Thanks for keeping us informed and look forward to your upcoming post on 2.20.

  • Sony needs to add support for “all” Divx,Xvid and WMV files to he PS3!!

    And please MKV Also!

  • When is this coming out?

  • I’ve been a fan since the PS1, and till this day I’ve bought every iteration of the PS series, and they all have managed to outperform the other consoles on all levels. All I can hope for is in-game XMB in the future (Don’t rush perfection! Take your time), better chat and messaging capability, and lot more decoding for videos! I <3 you Sony, don’t disappoint an avid fan!

  • Can you plz add a FW update that allows my PS3 to cook me breakfast!!!! Im sick of this lazy ars PS3 just sitting around playing games all day! Its about time my PS3 starts earning its keep!

P.S. can you make it wash my laundry too?

  • @303…..
Real?!? Omg not even WMP plays real.
Only 2 things play real, real media player and real media alt.. And if you have real media alt. installed then GOM will also play it. But real is the hardest codec for anything to play it seems.

And in game music is most likely coming with in game XMB. Witch will be better then anything Crapbox has to offer.
Trust me by the end of next quarter we will see a end to the oh so annoying “Xbox can why cant PS3?” posts.
Because there will be nothing the crapbox dose that the PS3 wont do better.

  • I’m certain this has been mentioned before, but I would like to see keyboard and mouse support at least in single player modes of games. I’m sure it can be implemented at a system firmware level. Also I would like to see the ability to sort music / photo’s / video’s in custom folders. As a 3rd request, I wouldn’t mind seeing the ability to access windows shares on the network. Granted the 3rd is probably a lot more difficult to implement, but sure would make transferring files over easier!

  • No need to b rude but are u guys on crack? Seriously i can gurentee every time an update gets released 10/10 people are hoping for it game xmb and obviously get disappointed. People are fools who say take ur time i mean seriously u guys have taken more than enough time.

  • I love my PS3, It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

Awesome job with the resume play function, I always felt that was missing.. but now it’s not! And, I’m pretty excited to see what studios are gonna do with the the BD-Live features.

    Keep the great updates coming!

    1. Please start pushing forward with the big futures in PS3 like home (community app), XMB (when?!). These two applications will do the PS3 will rise the sales even more, also the “fans” or the costumers with PS3 cant wait all there life…

    2. Why is the voice communication so bad in games? (Sometimes good, and yes i have a good connection).

    3. Why is the friend list so poor with futures, to compare it with the XBOX360!?

    4. Al the downloaded content put more folders, because my list of games starts to become long…

    5. To speed up your playstation store (your servers), why not do it more like “torrent based” so costumers will chare there speed to others, and stop when they have finished the download, or MABY get som “points” to buy some game/plug-ins-to-games from PSstore.

    6. put some support drivers for PC webbcam´s so more people can show their faces in PS3, some kind of “universal driver” for PCcams

    7. Why not give support for “VLCplayer” to the PS3?

    8. MAJOR FIX PLEACE, In some games the Guitar Hero sender, conflicts other games if its in “USB1” i thing and e.t.c. Also the same with PS3camera, it can conflict and make some other game to crash the system so one most restart the PS3.

9 And also, so i can speak to people with mic, or with my PS3cam even if i start a game with no online , they will go off if they want or if i want, not by a game that starts or other application you start so everything else closes (the mic or the PS3cam).

    10. …. hurry up !!! :-D

    Med vänliga // Johan

  • Johan, snälla gå¨och lär dig lite engelska eftersom jnästan 90% av det du skrivit är oförståeligt!

  • It would be nice if Sony could add MPEG-4 Timed Text support (i.e., subtitle support for mp4 files). Oh and, some other improvements for the MPEG-4 format, such as, multiple audio streams, GMC and B-VOP support, etc. etc.

  • The Karate Kids list is pretty good. I totally agree with it, they are all simple things, except number 10… But the others would make the PS3 so much better with changing so little. What i want is folders in movies, u can do it in music and pictures, i want to be able to do a folder for movie trailers, folder for game trailers, folder for movies etc.

  • how about faster speed when forwarding mp3 files just like the psp does……3x faster sux…lets make it faster!!!!!!!!!!!!. great updates though……….

ehem……….and FIX mortal kombat 2 so that i can chat with my buddies while playing……..hell…i’ll even pay for an update to that game!! please please please fix it!!!!!!!!THANK YOU

  • SONY!! LISTEN!!
    >in-game XMB doesn’t matter.
    >Internet Radio on PS3, Please!
    >More Video codec support. I hate waiting 3 or 4 hours for movies to be converted by my PC into a supported format.
    >Folders would be nice.

I’m sure I could think of more but those are my biggest wants for the moment.

  • @Naphthos

did you know you can make folders now right? just hit triangle and select information and edit the folder

  • Is it true it has been bump to April 8th?

  • No d/l it now…

  • im installing it now. done downloading mow installing.BOOOOYAAAAAAAAA

  • its actually nothing special they should get the in game chat like 360 nd to be able to listen to music and the TIME in d ps button at least

  • lol @328…

yes, give us internet radio. God knows i spent 500 bucks to listen to the radio….

  • Has anyone found how to get the divx subtitles working? Tried a bunch of diferent formats and no luck…

  • It would get very cool if we could use the PSP as a video remote as well.

With Thumbnails for the chapter shown on the PSP screen. Is that possible? Would be crazy cool.

  • Great update. Thanks for including patch notes!

  • All I want is in-game XMB.

I agree with the sound alerts; message, sign in/out, download is done, and if we have a network error we should have some type of sound notification like Yahoo messenger or AIM has. And we should be able to turn it on and off like we can with the key tone.

  • The DivX/WMV 2GB limit removal and Resume Play feature are fantastic. Great update! Released tonight and checkin’ it out.

  • “The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. ”

Anyone figure out how to do this yet?

  • “Save as” is ok and all, but… I think I speak for countless when I say(and you probably already know what it is) update the flash so that we aren’t so limited to what we can see on the net. Also, I’m sure there’s probably a logical reason for this but since the PS3 is SO powerful, why does the web browser struggle the way it does to load certain pages(many in fact)? You say you’ve improved that, though I doubt it’ll be very noticeable, but then again I’ll give you all the benefit of the doubt. Geez, right about now even the pocket book for a console Wii has a better browser though not by much. That’s insulting you guys; stop pulling the punches with the Cell Processor and kick some ass! ………we payed for it darnit lol…¬_¬+

  • @leetfoo

Just copy the playlist folder… not the music in the folder

    @Theossie

that will be really cool or at least the thumbnails like in the psp when I hit square instead the remote thing to choose a chapter like the Theossie guy said..

    @Sony
Thanks for the changelog and for the great update, from a 2.17 to 2.10 have more than I though

  • @342 rats.. i was hoping this was over remote play… now I’m less exicted… ;)

  • @ 343 leetfoo

Well.. now the psp in remote play acts like remote control if you turn the audio to the ps3 instead to the psp in remote play.. in this way if you have a home theater you can use this as remote control in a party you have in your home or something like that lol…

But about copy the playlist to the psp yeah.. via USB only and copy the folder only, thats the way to be, if you want to copy just a music track go to find it in the album folder I guess

  • @Rotastico

Agreed that they need to up the flash support, but as some people know, including Apple and the iPhone, Adobe has to license and create the players codec on the system, which Sony probably just hasn’t yet gone through with process of asking them to. The internet browser is not a primary function of the PS3 in some eyes, and things like the built in flash player can be averted. Like say you go to http://www.GameTrailers.com on your PS3’s internet browser, and you really wanna see the “Beyond the Apex Gran Turismo” preview video in HD, just go to “Download the file” on the page, when it let’s you select the format, pick the format that it works with, which currently is only WMV, but that will do for now. It will promptly download to your [Video] section on the XMB, for you to watch over and over again. Not too shabby, it’s a step. I’ve noticed several players that didn’t work before now working due to streaming issues being worked out after 2.20. The only place I haven’t gotten around to trying is Zero Punctuation. Hopefully it’s decent enough to play that. All the rest of the features are nice, and the neat little niches that they keep ironing out are still leaps and bounds against what other consoles can do. Don’t complain about the internet browser’s flash support unless you can’t access a computer vs. your PS3. The PS3 is doing it’s damndest to be a computer for you, but you have to be patient, it’s still in it’s OS’ infancy. There will eventually be a flash player, so take a chill pill for the moment, and go rant on how much it rules to have an internet browser on your console over on the Xbox blog. Or something.

  • I just noticed that the blue lamp on the Playstation Eye doesn’t stay on anymore when the PS3 is on standby in Remote Start status. It used to be on when I had it plugged in untill 2.17. Nice feature addition.

Bit by bit their getting there imo.

  • 335, i got the same problem. The Subtitles didn’t work. I’ve tried several times with str ones in avi contender files or Divx ones and don’t work.

Anyone else got problems with that?

  • 347

I just tried out subtitles, and got it working !
I used a program called “sub2divx” (google it or check @ divx.com site)
just load a avi file and a srt file and create a .divx file out of it… just takes a few mins, and work perfect on my ps3 ! :)

  • Will we also get the ability to directly play backed up ISO images?

I’m also missing the ability to play MPEG files converted from captured HD Cable transport streams.

  • Yakuza, ps2, EU PAL version

2.20 update, the game sadly still hangs up at the level called: “escape from the funeral”

    :(

  • Great update.

  • 348. I don’t wanna use an external program to add subtitles to any video file. That can be easily done in a lot of ways and, in fact, is what i’ve been doing in order to view my avi files subtitled. Ej, Quicktime.

The promise of the update is to play subtiles ( without convert) in any divx file. My divx files in avi contender or whaterver) don’t get the sub. In fact, the option of subs did not show any sub avalaible.

I’m still waiting for an explanation of wich type of sub it reads or wich type of video accept.

    Anyway, thx for the info.

  • 352 Okay, hopefully there’s a way to view subtitles without having to use any external programs… although the way I did it worked perfectly and took some minutes since it doesn’t convert the avi file, just embedds the sub into the .divx file.. I can add ~8 subs i thinks and even disable them at ps3.. so it works like a dvd/bluray.. ohwell :)

  • I just install it except for one previously unsupported video file I did not get any more support codec wise. I would love for Sony to come up with at least their own video converter for the PC and also a PC media server software that fully compatible and integrated to the ps3 and is not a resource hog. I would even pay for a special firmware upgrade that would give me every damn codec support out there provided it a cheap package deal! I love that it the second firmware upgrade in a month maybe they are getting ready for a big leap forward.
