More details on Firmware v2.20

269 0

Hi, everyone. When you turn on your PS3 today, you’ll be greeted with the newest system software update, v2.20. We gave you the heads up last week on what the new firmware would deliver, and, as promised, we have Eric Lempel back on camera to walk through a demo of some the new features. Also, to set the record straight, Blu-ray Portable Copy was never a part of this firmware update, and the feature isn’t related to BD-LIVE. We know a lot of you are excited about the ability to take a copy of a BD movie with you on the go on your PSP, so we’ll keep you posted on any developments with this cool feature in the future.

  • Please add more codec support!

I need to play all WMV,Divx and Xvid files.

    Also please add MKV support.

    And what about .AVI files??

  • Thanks for the info! I can’t wait for BD to PSP copy.

  • Thanks, for the support… Also think BD to PSP is a great idea.

  • The video isn’t loading for me :\

  • @mlmason75 – AVI files are just containers if memory serves me correctly. They are most likely divx and xvid so most of your .avi’s should work.

  • @mlmason75

AVI files are usually Divx or Xvid encoded so they are supported trust me I have a lot of them on my PS3 now thanks to the removal of the 2GB limit.

But yeah more codecs are needed, and the ability to play copy protected files too, I mean I have Resident Evil Extinction and Blue Harvest Family Guy in both wmv form from the digital copies they give and can’t watch them on my PS3 is wack.

The New Resume feature is sweet, I like it picks up right where I left off in Saw IV everytime now, Good Update guys keep up the good work

  • Gah!

I can’t hear sound on the video at work…

and I can’t read lips lol

  • I wanted to know about the subs and isn’t in the video :(… I guess is just many people said in the divx thing

  • The BD to PSP Sounds cool. And I was wondering if they would ever make an update to play DVD’s threw remote play (like PS1 games). So I could watch DVD and other people could use my TV. I guess since I still own a fat PSP I still feel cheated about not being able to play UMD’s on TV And why can’t we do that threw remote play?

  • And yes… is really sweet the resume thing… I’m watching the series 24 and was a pain to look where I was to later go to the go to to start where I was at. A question, there’s an easy way to check which movie have a bluray live feature? a list of something, thanks for the update I like it.

  • Very nice update and a great job on the video explaining how to use everything.

Now how about you guys stop being “cheeky” and give us In-Game XMB?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

  • @Tretle
AVI is just a container you got it right Tretle

    @Al De Leon
Thanks for the update on the features, nice to finally have a how too guide to the additions on the firmware. I’m really happy you guys gave us a heads up on the update a week in advance. Please keep it up, made me really happy to check this week and get all excited when I saw the update was available and what that update meant for me.

  • Codec WMV2,WMP v8

Do not seem to be supported on the PS3.

  • Great feature updates. Thanks Sony :)

Is support for subtitle files coming soon?

  • This new addition of BD-Live is great.

Next update, please add somekind of indication that someone plays a ps1 game. Since I bought the great MGS Essential Collection, people see that I’m connected but not doing anything. I know maybe the name of the game may not show, but just “Playstation Game” would be nice. My friends would stop sending me 6 chat invites in a row and wondering what I’m doing.

  • Great update figured you would stay away from certain codecs because the ones that certainly aren’t able to be used are the most popular used for pirating tv shows, movies, and so on. The resume thing is really great. keep up the good work

  • Nice!! work!!!
But Please Put Mexico on The PSN !!!
I want tu buy games of the ps store
All Mexicans that are registered in othre country please join in my request!!!!
    ViVa! Mexico!!

  • nice work Sony!

Just a quick question , Is there no way you guys can update the flash player for the browser? a lot of sites (including this one) are no accessible through the PS3 as you cannot view any of the videos.

  • Can I copy play lists and photos with Wifi from the Ps3 to the PSP or does it have to be through USB cause if its only through USB that would be not too smart.

  • When will the PS3 get a Java update?

Frankly I find it rather surprising that you can no longer view some official Sony PS3 sites, like http://www.playbeyond.com because it no longer supports the version of Java that the PS3 currently uses.

If it isn’t possible to update the version of Java used on the PS3’s XMB OS, then is it possible to do it by installing Linux?

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for the “video” description of the key features updated. I’d love to see this as a standard practice.

I also agree that expanded codec support would be much appreciated. It would be really nice to take the “We’ll play anything you throw at us” approach so we can think of the PS3 as our “media player” not our “specific formatted media player”. Nice progress _is_ being made, so don’t take that the wrong way.

I would love, love, love, LOVE to see CIFS/Samba support for filesharing though in addition to DLNA server support. I’ve been less than enthused with the current quality of DLNA server software and if you allowed something like Samba support, that would DRASTICALLY open up the possibilities to Windows and Linux fileservers on modest hardware. As it is, TVersity is a dog… “functional”, but a dog. And I hate using the Zune/WMP11 software… I’d just as soon use my 400Mhz P3 fileserver that’s already running Samba to share my media with my PS3.

Samba support would make my MONTH!

  • These PS3 firmware updates are meaningless until we get in game XMB access.

I don’t care how fancy and cool these features are, they won’t be used by nearly the same number of people that would benefit from in game XMB.

Sony needs to wake up and smell the coffee on this immediately. Tell the higher ups they’re dumb if they don’t think it’s a priority. “coming soon” isn’t good enough when the system has been out for 15 months. This should have been done a year ago, or even at launch in all honesty. 15 months later it’s just laughable to a serious next gen gamer.

  • Great update! But you could add subtitle support for SRT. So we can see MP4 with subtitles. Thanks

  • Nice update. BD Live is an AWESOME feature! And I now have more reasons to get a PSP!

Are there any BD titles already out that may have support for Profile 2.0 already on the disc (in anticipation, possibly)?

  • Nice update! Loving the BD-Live possibilities!
Is there any chance that, in future, you can enable Background Download of firmware updates? It’s just a bit annoying when you turn on your PS3 for a quick gaming bash and you have to make a choice – play games offline and leave the update until later or give up your gaming time so that you can play games online later, as PSN is disabled until you update.
I realise it’s not a big problem, but it would be a nice addition, especially as pretty much everything else can be downloaded in the background.
Otherwise, just keep doing what you’ve been doing! It’s much appreciated!

  • Some really great features here, can’t wait to try some of them out!!

  • Gametrailers on the PS3!!!

  • Thanks for including patch notes! Let’s do this every time….

  • Hi,

the PAL Ps2 game called Yakuza 1, on PAL 60 gb ps3 system still hangs up, at level called “escape the funeral”, the loading screen comes in, goes black, then nothing, not my special problem, others can’t play it too, hope new FW will fix it.

    Thx

  • With all these PSP-PS3 features hitting, I might just have to go out and get me a PSP. :)

  • I love the video and cant wait to see Eric demonstrate the ingame media bar

  • WOW, subtitles for divx, THX

    keep up the good work!!

  • Thx Guys!! Awesome update.

  • Very nicely done. Almost like you guys are professionals. :)

    Thanks a lot.

  • I like this update keep me busy till in game xmb

  • Personally, I want the “Go to” function in the video section to be added to the audio section (both PS3 and PSP). I listen to podcasts which can be several hours long. Then a simple mistake loses my place and its a real pain to have to fast forward (even at 120 speed, which isn’t even available on PS3!).

Also, PLEASE add browser login support to the REMOTE PLAY feature. You can’t access most wi-fi internet (even free ones) without accepting the EULA or logging in first! You added the ability to go to the browser in the RSS feed, so please do the same for initially logging into REMOTE PLAY.

  • I am very disappointed in this release, my hope was that i could finally use the web browser on the PS3 to view some of the most common sites (as there were meant to be seen) which now all require newer versions of adobe flash (v9).

It is impossible to even see the PS3 section of this site or watch video on gametrailers, cnn, nbc and many others due to the archaic version of flash that the PS3 can use.

This was my only hope for this release, i have never hounded Sony for ingame XMB (which i know is coming) or the crappy web-based PSN layout, but when they spoke of enhancements to flash and the browser i really thought that this issue would be put to rest.

Sony, If you do (care to) read this, please fix the adobe flash version so that you are using atleast version 9.0.

  • Al what about Video playlist?? i have a gaming store and would like to set the ps3 playing game videos to promote the machine!

    is this coming?
    thanks!!

  • Please more video codec support!
    .mkv?
    .ogm?
    .mov?

Thanks for the update…Long live Blu-Ray!

  • Really cool update, thanks guys.

But I do seem to have a problem with it. I was able to stream WMA files to my PS3 via TVersity, but now since the update they stream at 2 frames per second. Other formates work fine, just the WMA have the bad leg.

  • I don’t think I’ve seen this requested recently but I would really like to see upscaling of non-dvd content over component cables. It makes me sad to be playing Condemned in 480p.

Not a lot of stuff useful to me in this update but that’s ok. I expect to see a lot more things later in the year. Thanks.

  • Very good update, i would really like to see the MKV container supported also.

  • Would love to see an update for flash support but resume play was a much needed feature and I am glad I have it!

  • @43 (farmer) It’s not just component- HDMI users also can’t scale 720p content to 1080i. Beware the fanboys, but you’re not alone.

  • Bd to psp is great, but… don’t forget about in-game messaging. Hahaha.. That was sarcasm…unless you guys really did forget about in-game messaging. Then I would be speechless.

These are all great features in this update. Ones i’ll utilize in the near future. Seeing that I don’t have a home theater system yet and BD 2.0 is in its beginning stages.

Now that blu-ray it out of the way (for now), what’s next? More psp connectivity? More ps3 features?

  • I know everyone asks for the same ‘ol same ‘ol but I’m asking that you please add more avatars for our PSN accounts.

There are a ton of Playstation related avatars that I believe people would love to use like Little Big Planet, Heavenly Sword, Gran Turismo, Everyday Shooter, Q games Pixeljunk games, better Uncharted ones, SuperStarDust, Twisted Metal, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and even MGS4, Haze and GTA4.

  • ok update. much better than the waste of time 2.17 was. I love my ps3 but COME ON lets get off of the psp kick and add some features folks without the psp can use. I don’t know what those features are but you guys make the big bucks to tell us what we like. Read the playstation 3 forum some time and you’ll see all kinds of ideas that people would like to have put in place.
I’m not buying a psp so stop pushing features that glorify it.

I’ll say it but its a given by most people anymore… once again where is in game xmb? I seriously HATE that this feature is not out yet. the 360 had this at launch. I am not a 360 fan boy i don’t even like the 360 but at least the feature was there. PS3 is going on 18 months since launch and still no way to play my music and a game at the same time. very sad.

get your folks off the HOME project and get them all working on in game xmb. This will satisify many folks, then worry about home.

sorry just once again not happy with no in game xmb.

  • im going to have to get a psp too,
no more borrowing it from friends…

oh yeah, im still hyped for socom

  • All I really want is a Clock.
