More details on Firmware v2.20

269 0

Hi, everyone. When you turn on your PS3 today, you’ll be greeted with the newest system software update, v2.20. We gave you the heads up last week on what the new firmware would deliver, and, as promised, we have Eric Lempel back on camera to walk through a demo of some the new features. Also, to set the record straight, Blu-ray Portable Copy was never a part of this firmware update, and the feature isn’t related to BD-LIVE. We know a lot of you are excited about the ability to take a copy of a BD movie with you on the go on your PSP, so we’ll keep you posted on any developments with this cool feature in the future.

  • This is great news an all. But shouldn’t the people at Sony be focusing on making the PS3 the best gaming console?

  • Thanks for the update!

However, I feel that there are MANY things (as you obviously know) that can be improved on — that DOESN’T have to do with In-Game XMB.

    1. I love going into a chatroom with my buddies, but…there’s nothing to do (except talk)! Please make it so we can access the internet browser while we are in a chat!

    2. The Internet Browser desperately needs a flash update. I can’t even go to US.PlayStation.com!

    3. Please make it so we can see the time/date when the PS Button is pressed! (Kinda like the PSP.)

Those are just a few small things that I feel would go a LONG way!

As always, thank you so much for your constant support! Keep up the excellent work!

  • Very nice update. And I really like the video/tutorial. I think it will help a lot of people.

  • Won’t be happy until 1080i support is added for all games.

  • Thanks for the update. It is really greate. I can wait for the 6th Day :)

Anyhow, if you consider the wishlist here is mine:

    – MKV support (with subs, and multiple audio and so on) … MKV it is just a container and Sony almost supports all major MKV codecs so … this shouldn’t be hard
    – MOV support: digital cameras … need I say more?
    – SkyPE for PS3 maybe?
    – Subtitle file support (not embedded subtitles). Mostly SUB and SRT formats would be nice :)

  • Hello there. I really appreciate Sony in listening to users.

Things i´d really like to see in next updates:

    – Add Ecuador and Latin America in the PSN list.
    – Don´t shut the connection off while watching a DVD or Bluray: cannot receive msgs or download demos and trailers while watching a movie.
    – Add a shutdown timer on the XMB menu, for leaving the PS3 downloading demos alone.
    – Add XVID and 3GP codec support
    – Add more friendly connection setting
    – Add the rumored in game XMB, so one can chat and read msgs while in game
    – Tweak more the upscale of dvds
    – Add a section in PSN for freelance developers to upload demos, besides the oficial ones (flow was born that way!). And more variety of movie trailers.
    – Add a little “beep” when the controller´s battery reaches low level.
    – Don´t know how Home will work, but it would be great that the same avatar one create, is the same we use on our online games (or see armors and weapons from games played for display/use in our virtual house)
-Add support for other cameras than the playstation eye, or headsets.
    – Add more support for printers other than epson.

Thank you for your time, Sony developers.

  • I’d really just like the PS3’s Backwards Compatibility functions to actually work!

Final Fantasy 12 still looks horrible!

    I have a 60-gig launch unit!

    thanks!

  • Good update. Hopefully we will get IN-GAME XMB very soon!!!

  • Wow.Exactly what I wanted. Blu-ray live and remote play. Not. Come on where is the in game friends list?

  • Yes, more codec support would be nice like .mov files.

How come, when i try to save a webpage using save target, it asks me to insert storage media. Why cant it save it to my PS3 hard drive.

Anyway, another thing which i think is important is improved video quality and response time of Remote Play. Even if I am just using the feature between my PS3 and PSP wirelessly in my room, its laggy and it spoils the enjoyment. It makes it more like a novelty rather than a feature you can use over and over again.

Over internet browser features like Copy and Paste would be a welcome feature as that too can become more than a novelty and more of something i can use all the time.

    Thanks, whoelse

  • Mr. E.L.,
This update is all that(meaning: good)!!! I usually use my PC to grab-n-dash my music, due to I need the excercise..Yet, there is always something that makes me clear the dust of my PSP/1001. I’m a bit hurt my model wasn’t available for Skype, I still got love for the system. Just keep’em coming!!!:)

  • Hey! That’s pretty sweet! I’m going to check out if I can save Youtube videos. :D And that remote audio thing sounds great! This was a good update. Thank you very much, all of you who worked so hard to make this happen. :D

  • WHAT ABOUT IN IN GAME XMB AND IN GAME MUSIC. THAT WILL BE A REAL UPDATE. ALSO ENABLE MORE VIDEOS TO BE PLAY ONLINE. I ENJOY THIS EVERY DAY IN MY XBOX 360 AND I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT IN MY PS3 AS WELL. THE BD TRANSFER TO THE PSP SOUNDS GOO. BUT SONY YOU ALREADY WON THE BD WAR AGAINST HD-DVD SO STOP TREATING THE PS3 AS A BD PLAYER. IT IS A GAMING SYSTEM AND WE NEED UPDATES TO HAVE MORE FUN WITH THE PS3. I HAD BOUGHT A FEW GAMES AND ALL BUT WARHAWK ARE FOR THE XBOX 360. THERE IS MORE PEOPLE LIKE ME. WHEN YOU RELEASE THE XMB IN GAME I WILL NOT BUY MORE GAMES FOR THE 360 AND CONTINUE TO PLAY MY PS3.

  • Yeah I was hoping that the flash issue in the browser would be fixed also…it is kinda funny that it won’t work on Sony’s site but will on others….

  • Another vote for VIDEO PLAYLIST. Its a little thing, but very useful. Obviously only for downloaded local videos.

  • Great update.

Aside from this, the video Go To feature is great but it would be nice to have the PSP equivalent feature where you can scan through images of a video file at 1 min, 5 min etc. intervals. Love this feature of the PSP.

  • This firmware took my ps3 from a nat type 2 to a nat type 3. I am running my ps3 through a dmz so I should not be getting nat type 3.

  • Are you guys ever going to fix it so I can see an entire webpage (especially the PSN store) on a webpage on my 1080i TV? I get the sides completely cut off so I don’t see the entire thing. Sure, I could switch it to 480p so I can see it, but it SHOULD be viewable in 1080i, that’s just rediculous that it’s not. Thanks!

  • Hey this is a great update. Forgot to mention this before, but you guys should really implement a rss
reader into the ps3. This would allow us to download podcasts over our ps3’s. The psp already has this functionality and i hope the ps3 gets it soon.

  • Hey. Nice firmware update!
The only future feature I would love aside from the obvious is the option to “Always Allow” , or “Always Deny” the – “Do you want to run the plugin” message in the web browser.

It makes browsing the web on the PS3 really unenjoyable.

  • Like some have said. more codec support please!!

Could you allow the PS3 to recognize the Atrac folder SonicStage create on my computer. It’s annoying that it doesn’t read it. Or maybe it’s Tversity that doesn’t reconize the format. Either way, I want to stream my Atrac songs

  • BTW always enjoy the firmware updates… especially when they have little extras that are not initially shared

  • This is a pretty hardy update. the things i like most about updates likes these are the things in it they dont tell you are there. for example:

You can stream video files strait from the internet browser (divx, wmv, mp4, any file the is supported)

Also they added a Blutooth device manager which allows you to identify connected devices and rename that what you want.

of course they added more popup context menus (i’ve only notice a couple more in the browser when switching tabs.

of course there are a couple suggestions that could be made.

    1. The most annoying thing i found in using my system is listening rather long podcast you cannot GOTO or FAST FORWARD faster than 4X which is crazy. If you accidentally skip to a diiferent track it takes forever getteng back to where you left off. you may also want to add a resume feature in the music section

    2. It would be great if you could add the time on the XMB when you press the PS button.

    3. Also at this point you have to update the flash player. Playstation 3 owners cant even go to the playstation site becuase the versions too old.

well anyway thanks for the update and keep up the good work.

  • the most important thing i need is the latest flash update. when will we get that?

  • Nice video, cool;)

  • Nice video. But..

Sorry, i know but..the subtitle support, really..¿Can anyone explain it? I was hoping an explanation on the video but…bada-bom–just the same exact words in the press release.

That leaves me with two explanations:

You really didn’t know how (the hell) works or you don’t think it’s important enough to explain it.

    So, i ask again?

How the addition of subs in divx files works?

And, please, i don’t want an external program to add subs and stick it to my videos. Got ’em all. ;)

    Good update, but not ace.

    Cya!

  • WOW, we still can’t message each other during a game? I’m a very patient person, honestly I am, but this is ridiculous. What’s going on Eric? Can we get a straight answer already? I mean, were all adults here right?

  • I agree with the comment about expanding remote play so you can play your psp games on the big screen but what about it going the other way around also. Being able to play your PS3 games on your psp? Also what about adding a feature to use a standard bank account and routing number rather than a credit card? In game xmb and chatting would be a nice feature to have also but I know that it’s coming in the future so I’m not going mention any of that. Keep up the great work Sony!

  • Since I updated I can’t get a NAT Type 2 internet connection, now its NAT Type 3.I have my PS3 hooked directly to my modem so its not a router issue. It could be my ISP but I don’t think it is.I’ll give it a few days and eventually call my ISP. I’ll be back on here if they tell its the PS3.I would like this to be checked out though. It tests my connection really fast now and it was a slower process before the update…when I had NAT Type 2.

  • I have a bluetooth keyboard.. but cant connect to my PS3.. When I try to connect I have to enter a pincode into my keyboard first before I can see the pincode provided by the PS3.. Is it possible to fix this? So I can first choose a pincode myself and THEN enter this pincode into my PS3?
    Thanks!

  • Nice work, but I would really like to see more Game-related new features. Because honnestly, I bought a Video Game system… not a DVD or Blu-ray player. Not that I’m not happy to have a Blu-ray player connected to my Full HD tv, but the main purpose of the PS3 should be a gaming machine.

But, don’t get me wrong, this is a nice update.

    Thank you.

  • @ TouchyEd (98 +99)
Bruh, you took the words right out of my mouth. FUNNY stuff!

Eric, we need digital audio output via HDMI and optical cable simultaneously. Great Update

  • @ roach2285, it’s not just you i know of other people including me who can’t get nat type 3 after 2.20.

  • Bring back support for RSX for other os. Why was it taken away? Why isn’t there any answers for this?

  • I meant can’t get type 2 nat.

  • thatsmartguywiththefro

@25 (mywhitenoise) I totally agree, especially about the edit all and album imports. I spent forever editing all my songs so they had the correct information.

Sony: Thanks for the great update! In the future here are a couple more things I would like to see aside from the obvious (Home, In Game XMB, Skype, etc.)
    1. An easily accessible page that contains widgets (like the iGoogle homepage) that displayed info like weather, news, time, conversions/calculations, etc.

    2. I loved the theme customization in 2.00, and would like to see this extended to the actual position/arrangement of icons (Settings, Game, Friends, etc.) as well as options for interactive background visuals similar to the visual player’s.

    3. More Automatic features. In a previous blog post’s comments someone mentioned automatic system update. This would be great especially if you could program it to automatically accept the terms if you wanted it to load completely overnight. In addition Auto Shutdowns (like Folding@Home) and Auto controller off options would be great, and appreciated by many.

I really think that these are all quite feasible, and know that many would love them, as I have seen quite a few postings including similar thoughts. I could go on, but I’ll keep the rest of my thoughts on improvement, regarding the wonderful PlayStation 3, to myself until the next update, provided some of these ideas are incorporated.

Thanks again for the update and for (hopefully) listening.

  • Pants as usual. Video 6/10 if your gonna demonstrate the new features then demonstrate all the new features.

So basically Blue ray_live support has been included to bring the PS3 up to date with other BD players on the market that have this feature already… even though the PS3 is being bought mostly by GAMERS, PSP Remote play features get precedence over PS3 in game XMB/Web browser Flash Player/latest Video codecs support & File/folder management because???

Straight up this the last console I buy from Sony. Next Gen, yeah right, dont make me laugh. I got 7 games & none of them play at 1080p! I can’t pause my game & send or check my messages, online gaming is a joke the server problems are all over the forums if Sony cared to take a look, (before anyone says it’s the developers fault & not Sony google the PS3 dev kit fiasco first then comment) I cant print wirelessly, predictive type doesn’t function with a bluetooth keyboard, 4gb limit with files… the list is endless. KMA

  • Hey, thanks for the advance information Lempel. I like the video, I remember you doing it once before. You should make this a rule man :). Hey, did anybody ever tell you that you look like a younger version of benjamin Linus from lost? :D. Jack Trenton looks like the current version on Ben.

  • sony only support VC1 which is also a part of blu-ray.
i doubt sony would support wmv8- and others for free while it’s used by only a small margin 2 to 5% of the users.

u would probably have to pay for it since it’s owned by Microsoft, and they can be pretty crappy about these things even though sony probably owns some of those patents looking at their audio/video past and all.

Oh, one more thing that I forgot to add in my previous comment @137. The next update needs/should update the date/time setting on Caracas, Venezuela. It should be -4:30GMT not -4:00GMT. And while your at it, you might as well add the clock feature when you press the PS button.

Any responses to let us know you (Sony) are actually reading these comments would be VERY welcome.

  • When are we going to get an update with better support for streaming? When watching files from a media server, there seems to be next to no buffering; so the occasional high bitrate point can cause stuttering.

Somewhat related, allowing background file copying from the media server and the ability to start playing the file before it’s finished fully copying would be great too.

  • Hey, is it possible that we could get a flash update for the browser?

  • In-game XMB nothing else matters! It is ridiculous that the system has been out for over a year and we still do not have this function. Furthermore, the microphone codec issue needs to be resolved. Several online games have faulty microphones that developers struggle with. Give us cross game chat, in-game XMB and Accomplishments already!

  • Reverse remote play please

  • I know AVI. format works but I want all video codecs for my PS3 so i can watch my videos on it. Like mov., rm., mkv, ogg.,and many more.. and subtitles such as srt. or sub. or any other sub play along with the video… i hope one of these codecs will come to my PS3 on one of the future firmwares … but i know for now its only Divx.. the PS3 has a lot of potential.. so i hope sooner or later it lives up to its expectations .. so we can take advantage of the softwares installed on the PS3..

  • loved the update, however, it’s still kinda funky, that i can visit this site with my PC and watch the videos, but when I browse through my PS3 web browser I cannot. Is there a setting for this?

  • is there any way to watch my naruto episodes from my pc streaming them through my PS3? The episodes usually stop after a few seconds. Anyone know how to do this? They are in .avi format.

  • This is a nice update but I would like to see suppport for for formats for both video and music i would also like to see in-game XMB I woould giveup bithh of those for HOME though. HOME was one of the biggest reasons I decided to buuy a PS3 instead of the othheer consoles plus

  • i would also love to see a clock in the ps3 xmb

  • Great update this time guys. I really like the resume feature, but please hurry up and add the BD to PSP feature! I’ll take that before in-game XMB any day!
