More details on Firmware v2.20

269 0

Hi, everyone. When you turn on your PS3 today, you’ll be greeted with the newest system software update, v2.20. We gave you the heads up last week on what the new firmware would deliver, and, as promised, we have Eric Lempel back on camera to walk through a demo of some the new features. Also, to set the record straight, Blu-ray Portable Copy was never a part of this firmware update, and the feature isn’t related to BD-LIVE. We know a lot of you are excited about the ability to take a copy of a BD movie with you on the go on your PSP, so we’ll keep you posted on any developments with this cool feature in the future.

  • It’s not just streaming video that’s broken, several of my mp4s are stuttering playing off of the HDD. Just got my media server working a couple weeks ago..bummer.

  • hey thx for the update i have been quite happy with the way things have been progressing keep up the good work :)

anyway i have a suggestion for a feature on the PS3 i recently bought a sony bravia and noticed that the PS3 does not show up as a syncable device on the TV it would be great to beable to turn my PS3 on with just the theatre sync control instead of putting my TV on then turning my PS3 on which is quite annoying since the technology is there

i think this would be a great feature that also rewards sony’s LOYAL fans

    thx

Please fix this, people are posting about it everywhere. How can an unreadable file be “read” to the point where a video tag is created? I notice that with unplayable files the information screen does not list a codec for the file.. yet the PS3 can grab a frame out of it and make a tag. Huh?

  • Hello everyone
By far I am very pleased with the PS3 as a whole, but there are few things that must be sorted out:
    1.better video compatibility /divx,xvid,h264,mov,mp4/full support
    2.containers /most impotant MKV/
3.subtitles /sub,srt,txt/ without conversion and embedding
4.SACD multichannel /I own 100+ and by far I’m very disappointed with the issue since it can be done/
5.Folders and subfolders management and creation by owner, because available options now are terrible
    6.Skype
7.Decent Internet browser and downloads/even now a lot of issues and glitches/
    8.RSX in Linux
    9.Bravia Theatre Sync
    10.DTS-MA and DD-THD bitstream or internal /via HDMI/
    11.Prepaid cards for PS Store
    12.Movie and music rental downloads
    13.Universal PVR add on /dvb-t,c,s/-just a wish,but a possible and nice one
So to sum up,having in mind who is SONY,and that they employ about 5000 people in R&D there must not be a problem to dedicate 1/10th of them to sort out the above most obvious problems. If SONY does it by the end of summer /maybe they are working already/,and fix the after bugs by October – November, they’ll be outselling Wii and 360 combined by twice.I hope someone in SCE Japan is actually reading this rows since this is the objective of this blog and I’m not fond of Japaneese to write to the J-site.
Best regards to all and keep enjoy your PS3,future is in Our hands, someone /SONY/ just have to make it happen !

  • I second the last poster’s comment. Please include more codec support. I’m tired of having to convert some div-x encoded files to play them on the PS3. “Media Type not supported.” gets old.

  • Will it be possible to allow the Remote Play feature to encompass all games the PS3 supports? I know currently the game itslef must support the remote play feature, but is this a limitation of the PS3, PSP, or just the game creators?

  • There are still problems with the XVid/DiVx playback as described in this post:
    https://blog.playstation.com/2008/03/12/firmware-update-v217/comment-page-6/#comment-49331

Error: this content cannot be played (8002880C)

It seems to happen when there are fast bright or dark transitions between sequences of video. Maybe its something to do with the encoding, but it’s not specific to any one file, it happens on many. It happens from HDD or from network.

The current implementation has real issues with being flexible about playback of encoded files – why not let it handle errors better?

  • Good Job on the new Improvements, but I’m still waiting on Listening my music while Playing any game! When?

  • In my humble opinion further upgrades to the media capabilities of the PS3 is a big waste of time and resourced. Here is a very long ass 3 part rant I wrote about what SCE needs to focus on instead and why.

At least the redesigned shop is coming, finally!

  • How about some anti-aliasing for Ps1 games?
    And DVD-to-PSP ripping besides BD-to-PSP?

The XMB interface should show all our music folders across all the screen, not only the vertical pop-up menu. Have you noticed how boring to search for a Z artist/album is when you have to circle through all the others? I know there are some sorting options but most of them don’t help very much.

Last but not least. ADD PSN SUPPORT FOR MEXICO, PLEASE. THE FACT THAT WE HAVE NORTH AMERICAN PS3’S DOESN’T MEAN THEY’RE ILLEGAL. NORTH AMERICAN SAM’S CLUB STORE CHAIN SOLD MANY OF THEM TO US IN MEXICO BY LEGAL MEANS.

MANY OF US HAVE VISA OR MASTERCARD CREDIT CARDS (IN OTHER WORDS, INTERNATIONAL CREDIT CARDS); SO WHY WON’T YOU ACCEPT THEM? MONEY IS MONEY, RIGHT? REGARDLESS OF ITS PROCEDENCE. AND YOU DO WANT MONEY.

INTERNATIONAL CREDIT CARDS ARE ACCEPTED IN MOST INTERNET SITES, LIKE AMAZON. SO WHY NOT YOU?

  • ok so I got all happy that I am no longer going to have to split divx files in half to play them on my PS3. BUT now that I can play the entire file at once ( which im happy about) there is a problem in which it will play in 5.1 surround up until a certain point then it will switch to 1 channel…. ( so when that happens sound only comes out the center channel on my surround system) :(

it happens mainly near the ends of the files when there is like 20 or so movies left.. Most of all these divx files are between 2.14GB to 2.30GB. I have also noticed that it will sometime play to a point then I’ll get an error saying the content can not be played…

anyone having this issue too? I hope its addressed by sony and it gets fixed. its really annoying and bothers me…

  • hey there;

is anyone else having any problems with the new update? I no longer have the display all option when I insert a disc with media files. Previous to this update, I could watch my divX files that were larger than 2.0gb up to the 2gb mark. However, now I cannot play them at all. Is anyone else having any issues like these?

  • After upgrade to 2.20 CAN’T PLAY ANY DISK, I’ve seen a number of posts with same problem. I have a Spanish speaking PS3 bought in US. Everything was working perfect just before upgrade.

Any advice in solving this problem?

  • I have one suggestion which I would expect is an easy fix: Turn the controller off automatically after say 10 minutes without use. Honestly, the only time I could imagine where it was laying still while “in use” would be when I watch a movie. But having to hit the ps button and waiting a few seconds would not be a problem. (You could even let there be an option to turn this feature off and maybe even say for how long one should wait before turning the controller off) I don’t know the details, you figure it out. But do please!

Another thing: Could you consider releasing a new controller design? I think that the design today does not take into account the fact that we now have analog shoulder buttons. In order to make full use of both shoulder buttons and have a precision control of the analog buttons, I think it is necessary to get a good grip with only the little finger and the ring finger (same words for these fingers in English as in Norwegian?) I do not do this with the SixAxis design, and can’t understand how anyone else really does neither. Have a look at e.g. Logic3’s non-official controller for the PS2, which does this exact small redesign of your otherwise very good controller!

  • Content cannot be played

    ERROR: 8002880C !!!!

This update F’ed up my media stream. I think its becuase I’m using Windows Media Player 11, and sony is hating.

I’m willing to bet everyone using WMP11 is having this problem.

  • PLEASE, PLEASE give us like FireFox or Opera as a browser. No offense but the Sony built in browser is no where near as polished as either of the forementioned browsers. Either overhaul the Sony browser to be like FireFox, Opera (dare I even say Internet Explorer?) or give us the option of using one of the oter browsers insterad of Sonys.

  • xCLUBSandSPADESx

it would be awesome if we could multitask while in gameplay, like listen to music from a device or the system, or maybe answer or send friends messages all during gameplay,

  • how sadly appropriate that i cannot even view the video telling me about the new firmware on my PS3 browser….you guys have a long way to go before this is serviceable.

  • I had been using an external 750 GB hard drive in place of the original 60 GB drive of my Australian PS3 since October last year. The drive is housed in an externally powered USB caddy that supports an eSATA connection. The hard drive is connected to the internal SATA socket of the PS3 that is exposed when the PS3’s internal hard drive is removed.

Up until I upgrading 2.20 I had experienced no problems using the large external drive. When I upgraded my PS3 to 2.20, the new firmware downloaded and installed without error. However, when it restarted after the firmware install, all it showed was the blowing silk background. It did not bring up the XMB.

I’ve done a bit of testing and found that a 2.20 PS3 will happily format both 500Gb and 750Gb drives, but can only boot with the 500Gb and not the 750Gb.

To cut a long story short, PlayStation tech support in Australia won’t return emails on this subject. Does anyone from Sony care or know about this?

Was support for 750 GB and larger drives in 2.20 dropped intentionally? If so, why weren’t users warned prior to the 2.20 upgrade so they could save their data and upgrade smoothly.

Will support for 750 GB and larger drives be restored in a future firmware update?
