DUALSHOCK 3

Rumble is back with the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller for PLAYSTATION 3. These are shipping to store shelves as we speak, so be on the lookout for them next week. Now I know that the list of compatible games is the most important thing to you, so we’re including that at the bottom of this post. The titles with an asterisk in the list below will require a patch in order to activate the rumble feature. The patch will automatically download to your PS3 if your console is connected online. If you are not connected online, check our PlayStation Knowledge Center for more information.

We will be launching have launched a web page on the PlayStation website later this morning dedicated to informing you of what titles use force feedback. This list will be expanding as new titles become compatible, so be sure to be sure to check back. You can also keep an eye out for this icon:

DUALSHOCK 3 compatible

This will be located on all new software releases that are DUALSHOCK 3 compatible.

Just to give you a small refresher course, the DUALSHOCK 3 wireless controller includes pressure sensors that rumble with each action. SIXAXIS technology is also included, so you can still use motion control, and the controller features Bluetooth technology for wireless gameplay. You can pick it up at any of the major retailers and at a cost $54.99 MSRP.

  • Cool, I have all those games but 4 of them. I will have to play them all over again. :)

  • How does the battery life compare to the regular controller?

    • Kristin Neirinckx

It has the same battery as the SIXAXIS wireless controller so any change in battery life will depend on your use of the rumble feature. From what I\’ve heard from those who have tested it and from the respondents here on the blog, the change is minimal.

  • Imported mine already but I will be picking up a second DS3 as soon as those bad boys hit the stores.

    Thanks for the update

  • What about PS2 emulation? Is that coming later?

  • Answer to post # 2

from my experiance, it last as long as the SIXAXIS even with the rumble on

PS: Sony, get with Infinity Ward and help them integrate rumble in COD4 …ASAP.

  • Time to replace my other two SIXAXIS controllers. :)

  • What’s the specific date will it show up in stores?
Will there be any other colors aside from the normal black?

    • Kristin Neirinckx

No specific date, as soon as the retailers get them they can put them on shelf. Although I can\’t say for sure, my guess is that by early next week, you should be able to pick one up. Black is the only color available.

  • Yay!!!!
    /drool

Where’s my $600 bucks GW…? I’ve got some spending to do!

  • I oredered mine a while ago (the white one) and it works perfectly… for those who worries about the battery life.. it is as long as the Sixaxis controller

  • I have 3 SIXAXES, but everyone raves about the Dual Shock 3. I guess I’ll try to track one down – maybe Amazon will run another special (plz?). Without any marketing spin, is there any new rumble feature (added intensity levels, unique implementations in ps3 games) that wasn’t in the PS2 version?
Also, how have you other owners found the SIXAXIS motion controls have been affected by the addition of rumble? Games like Go! Sports Ski already feel a bit “wonky” with just SIXAXIS, I’d imagine with rumble it gets worse?

  • For us impatient folks, Playasia rules :-P

Btw, is there EVER going to be a firmware update where we don’t have to have the PS3 ON to charge our controllers?!? Thats a huge pain in the butt

  • @11, why don’t you plug the controller into another USB device that is already on? A computer, DVR etc.

  • This List ist not really complete ;)
for example Games like Assassin’s Creed or UT3 also support it out of the box.

  • i had my january

  • Kristin..as post #13 said the list is not complete.

AC, UT3, and…. Army of Two also make that baby rumble.

There is probably even more, but I can only speak for those last two I mentioned games since I own them

    • Kristin Neirinckx

Admittedly, this is a conservative list. I\’m sure there are games that are compatible that aren\’t listed. I\’m working fast and furiously to make sure it\’s as accurate and up to date as possible. I appreciate you letting me know though…I\’ll be sure to include them. :)

  • @SPARDA, thanks for the info :D

  • i had my DUALSHOCK 3 since january

  • AWESOMESAUCE!

But why no call of duty? Any idea when?

  • How ’bout some Ninja Gaiden Sigma? They could coordinate rumble to Rachel’s juggies.

  • I wish COD4 would add this, sony is there anyway to get this added to the game? I mean it’s a great game and even though IW hates PS3. You guys should encourage them to get rumble added.

  • Im reckoning that the list they have put up is a copy and paste job as there are little * on some of the titles but no explanation of what its there for.

Im wondering when they will finally make there way to europe.

  • All I can say is, it’s about time! =)

  • how about the EU?

  • Yeah, how about the EU?

And why did it take it THIS long to be released? If the ‘japenese’ controllers work with US/EU machines, why did they take so long to get released?

It just makes NO sense to do that.

  • woo hoo, about bloody time sony :)

  • hmm pretty cheap 55$ knowing the dollar is almost worth half of what it was in 2002, in euro’s that is 35Euro’s which is close to what the dollar used to be worth in 2002..

i estimate it will cost around 42.99Euro’s including VAT ;)

  • And once again, everything is right in the world of Playstation. Thank you.

  • Yay, rumble is back! Now all we need is a set of 21st century online features, and the PS3 will be ready for launch; oh, wait–it already DID launch…

  • I’ll only get them once my current controllers are broken or something.

I don’t want a total of 4 controllers while I’m the only one playing on my PS3. Kinda silly!

  • @29
be happy they listened to you at all

  • Any word on when Europe can expect the DS3’s? Also these have been out in Japan for awhile now, why has it taken so long to launch it into other regions?

  • Seanscythe2

    IW does NOT hate PS3.

They are one of the only 3rd party devs out there that gave us an on par (better in some ways) version of their game.

Their mistakes are not testing the online component completley, and lagging behind in their PS3 support.

    Back to the Topic:

I’ve had my DS3 for a while now, and love every shakin’, quakin’ minute of it.

Even though rumble is not essential, its really nice to have for some games. (Uncharted comes to mind)

  • I already got the DS3, japanese version. I wanted the white color and it was the same price as this anyway.

  • Please don’t forget Europe. I really need one.

  • Fantastic, I’ve been waiting for this so I could pick up a second controller!

  • Yes I can’t wait to try out the rumble controllers. I’ll probably sell my two sixaxis controllers and buy two dualshocks

  • $55 is a bit steep…

  • 38: r-nice | April 2nd, 2008 at 7:23 am

55$ would be steep if the dollar had the same value it had in 2002, but right now 55$ is almost half the price of the 2002 dollar so around 34$.

  • Got mine from playasia.com some time ago, but nice to see them officially out now (in the US at least). Hopefully this will prompt Codemasters to produce a DiRT patch which adds rumble support like they promised before DS3 was announced in various interviews to do.

I guess this also increase the pressure on Infinity Ward to add rumble support for COD4.

  • Oh yea! I can’t wait!

  • Hay can you get on the line and get Activison to add Rumble support for COD4, and Epic as well to UT3?

Also dose it rumble with PS2 games? I heard it did, but I can’t find an official statement about it.

  • Damn, I was hoping this was out on Friday. :-[ But glad to hear they are on the way, I pre ordered mine yesterday. I HOPE they aren’t as cheap as the SixAxis. I had to buy three of those since the PS3 came out and the sad part is, I am not even rough on my stuff. The left analog stick just keeps sticking on them.

Is there any improvement on the sticks?

  • Sweet, I’m definitely replaying all my PS3 games…..not to mention God of War 2 and Shadow of the Colossus again on my PS3. I packed up the PS2 already for our upcoming move, but have a hankerin to play Shadow again. You need rumble to get the complete feel of that game.

  • When your using sixaxis, does the rumble interfere with the motion or no?

  • I imported a DS3, and I it is the only controller I ever use now. Definitely worth picking one up. Rumble in my games makes me happy, and I wish I didn’t have 2 Sixaxis controllers now.

  • I’ll be picking one up. Might as well. I need a new controller anyway

  • Should have been in the box from day one!

At least we have it though!

    Warhawk rocks with the DS3

    YES! PS2 GAMES RUMBLE!

  • @ 43

read the post on the first page. Epic’s UT3 always suppored rumble from day one

Also, it works great on PS2 games.

  • @ 12 aka Moog…is that possible? I always have it plugged into my PS3 and I tried to use a USB hub but that doesn’t work…atleast not the one I have. I guess I could give it a shot and plug it into my laptop
