Firmware (v.2.30) Details and Store Walkthrough

410 0

Hey Everyone! We know you’re all patiently waiting for the next PS3 firmware update, ver. 2.30, which includes the revamped PLAYSTATION Store. The good news is that it’s coming soon, and you can now see how the new user interface will look in this video demo featuring Grace Chen.

I have more good news to report today – the system software update will also add DTS-HD Master Audio output for Blu-ray videos, which means the high-definition visuals of Blu-ray will now be matched with the highest quality audio for the ultimate movie-watching experience on PS3.

DTS-HD Master Audio is literally bit-for-bit identical to the studio master recording and makes movie soundtracks and sound effects truly come to life. The technology delivers audio at the incredibly high rate of 24.5 mega-bits per second (Mbps) on Blu-ray disc, which is significantly higher than standard DVDs. DTS-HD Master Audio also offers 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24 bit depths, so you’ll be totally immersed in the sound. The firmware update will add DTS-HD High Resolution Audio as well, which is a similar output technology that requires less disc space. You can read more about both codecs here.

A lot of you, particularly the home theatre enthusiasts and audiophiles out there, have been asking us for this capability, and we can’t wait until you have an opportunity to pop in a compatible Blu-ray video to test it out for yourself.

  • Cool, now just need Netflix support!

  • I was wondering if there would be any way to have these firmware updates download them by there selfs. I like on the Wii if you leave the system on standby the Wii will download the new update for you. I think the PS3 would some how be able to do that too. Seeing as I leave my PS3 on all the time on the standby mode. That being when it shows the red LED light. I think and hope you could find a way to allow downloads to work when you are not on the system. So this way when you want to play on the PS3 you can instead of waiting for a download.

  • Ms Chen. Any chance I could treat you to dinner at Tao 42 East 58th Street New York?

Great video! Sorry but I got distracted a little bit by the gorgeous Grace Chen.

  • Man this new store rocks! Also Kudos to Sony for giving the home theater nuts what they wanted! I love this machine!

  • Without fixing the mp4 file stuttering issue introduced in the current firmware, I’ll still be disappointed. Using the PS3 as a media player was one of the reasons I bought it.

  • All you asking about you receiver doing decoding or the PS3 bitstreaming, the PS3 will be doing the decoding the signal and sending it as LPCM over HDMI. DTS-HDMA is NOT supported over optical.

  • EXCELLENT!!! It looks sexy!

  • Wicked!!! ;-P Nice one SONY ;)
Keep up the good work ;)

  • Is that for sure that the PS3 decodes and sends via PCM? That would be great, since I don’t think my amp supports DTS-HD natively although I haven’t verified. (my amp only does HDMI 1.2)

Any word on if SACD multichannel will be sent via DTS over optical in this FW? Seems like this is the “major DTS upgrade” firmware issue, I wish this functionality would come back!

  • One question though:

Dose this mean people who simply change their account region on their PS3s will no longer get to browse the other nations stores? IE this has been a major problem with the current store as many releases that hit only the US, EU, or Japan stores get swamped by people who don’t even have accounts in that store but can still download things off them by making one up and fooling the store into thinking it’s legit.

Please tell me this is fixed so we no longer have people doing 24 downloads of of the Japanese, or UK stores in the US or vice versa.

  • You guys have done a spectacular job with the new store! I’ll finally be able to read the text on the screen unlike the store we have now which made it impossible to read the fine print at any resolution. Looks very professional and just what we’ve come to expect from Sony.

    Thank you

  • I like this update.

I gotta ask though… WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FRIDAY PATAPOST?!
It’s sad that one of your most original titles is not getting the recognition that it desrves from Sony themselves.

  • Nothing wrong with the old store IMO – But this is taking it to another level :-) – Thanx!

  • dang, 2 big features (BD live and audio fixings) within a month from each other. Are we going to see big feature number 3 within the next month???

No one will ever get mad at Grace Chen when we have a sorry store update. Well, at least I won’t. She’s very lovely.

Store update on April 15? If so, then Happy Birthday to me! waaa hooo!

  • Sweeeeet!!!

  • This has nothing to do with the firmware, but I saw the new MGS4 box cover. I just noticed that “dualshock 3 compatible” icon next to the ESRB rating. Take that stupid crap off the front of the box! I hate clutter ruining the art. I traded in my SIXAXIS for a Dualshock, but it isn’t a big deal. ALL games should have rumble, and it shouldn’t be advertised like it’s some new and unique feature.

  • My first Ever 5/5 rating for a post!

    This is awesome.

  • Congrats Sony, that’s AWESOME!

  • i love it is so much better then the old store

  • Nice, I’m lookin forward to the update.

  • Can’t wait to try it for myself.

  • nice job i love it

  • Could be a little better but still looks loads better than the current store.

  • nice! love it… ingame xmb next??? (oh and get on IW’s ass for rumble, pleaaaaaaase =D)

  • Great Job Sony engineers on the DTS-HD Master Audio.. further “future-proofing” the PS3!

  • DTS-MA! Thank you!!

  • This is so GREAT i wanna scream!

    WOOOOOOOOH!

  • Fantastic! Looks waaaay better then the old store. Thank You!

  • well it would be cool if i could watch the whole friggn video! it wont let me watch past 35 seconds!

  • Ok Eric I have a question…

Let me first mention I am very pleased with this new addition to my fave console of them all…

But I would like to know what efforts Sony are doing to support International Customers on the Playstation Store/Network..

What I mean is that foreign credit cards, namely that of the Caribbean (Trinidad and Tobago), do not work on the Playstation Store due to our Billing Addresses being not accepted.
1000’s of users like myself have to register for US/Canadian Accounts with our relatives addresses, yet we can’t purchase from the store..

When are the Playstation Network Cards coming out? Will they be cross-currency capable? That is, since I have a CA account, and I order the card down from the US, will I be able to use that same card on the Canadian store and pay the Canadian Price?

When will I be able to change my country of residence from Canada to the United States to get lower prices on the store in my Account on the Playstation Network?

These are questions that need to be addressed…. Sony don’t leave a Giant market in Latin America in the dark…
We want to BUY from the store but CAN’T…

The last thing I want to hear is “We are not licensed to distribute in that region..blablabla..”

  • DTS-MA – thank you!

But please add a clock to the PS-button screen!

  • Yeah I would of bought COD:4 for my PS3 instead of my PC if it had rumble support a feature that IW knew was supported by other PS3 games, and knew was going to hit this year. So why can’t they get on it!? Also please add DualShock 3 support for the fallowing games as well:

    Dark Sector
    Viking Battle for Asgard
    Dynasty Warriors: Gundam
    Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
    Assassins Creed
    Madden NFL 08
    Lego StarWars: The Complete Saga

Get these games to support rumble and I will be vary happy!

  • Store is looking really good! Plus DTS-HD = AWESOME :)

  • wow, looking great. The updates are better and better everytime!

Tip: Next is the in-game XMB. Not all the options, but at least the users bar, so we could change the user. For an exemple, if one of my friend wants to play a mission after I’ve finished mine, we wouldn’t have to quit the game, change the user and then load the game again, we would just have to press the PS button and change the user. Wich would be really, really better! Thanks anyway for the numerous and appreciated updates! :D

  • you know what would have been great?

BEING ABLE TO WATCH THIS VIDEO ABOUT THE PSN STORE FOR THE PS3 FROM MY PS3!!!!

    > X

  • **** I LOVE YOU GRACE! MARRY ME ****

Thank you SONY for this pleasant improvement. It is a good feeling knowing SONY is taking action to satisfy their customers and loyal fan base in every area, giving us the very best as possible gaming experience…

  • DTS-HD is a nice addition but can we ever get a update that actually makes the ps3 fun? i mean this is a game console fix the blu ray stuff later! games should always be first on the list this is why the ps3 is in last! Sony is so blind. Ive had a ps3 since launch and it still works but it gets played like once a month the games abnd feature for gaming on it are so bad its barely above wii. Stop working on useless blu ray crap who actually has a dts-hd reciever anyway!

  • Looks really good and seems easy to navigate; better than the old store AND Xbox Live Marketplace.

  • Well first off…

Grace Chen, you are a very beautiful woman.

    Second…

The new PlayStation Store looks to impress, I for one have been wondering why the PSN wasn’t an on-board application since the start of the project. I’m glad to see it come to life in such wonderful style though, preview ability will be a huge plus, especially for those people that don’t like to wait while it downloads. Any news on how/if the PlayStation Store will be incorporated into the 3d spaces of the Home Community Application?

  • Great job with the PSN Store. It looks great and very well put together. Is Movie Downloads coming any time soon?

  • PS: Keep up the ‘GREAT’ work Sony!

You guys invented what defines innovation in this industry.

  • In the beginning was the word, and the word was that Sony didn’t listen to, or care about their loyal fanbase. Well, now we all know that this isn’t true and that Sony continues to deliver on things we ask for, and I have every confidence that they will continue to deliver on these requests.

I even believe that they will deliver on the biggest request of all sooner rather than later, and that is in game messaging, or in game XMB.

Awesome job guys. Please keep these updates coming.

Like a few before me, and many to follow I’m sure, I have a few more:

    1. Netflix compatibility
    2. Ability to play multi-region DVD’s
    3. Browser speed improvements and flash capability
    4. iPod compatibility

I know these aren’t necessarily your domain Eric, but please pass them on to whoever is responsible for managing these requests.

  • The new store looks really good. Very clean and smooth interface.
The other marketplace still seems very clunky to me with all those ads and the way their interface and navigation is.
This new PlayStation Store will definitely help make the shopping experience easier for a lot of people.

  • Looks fabulous! It looks like we have until the 13th (when GT Prologue) launches when the store will be updated. YES! :)

  • WE WANT HOME AND IN GAME XMB…
    WHY ALWAYS USELESS UPDATES -_-

  • Ohhh man i cant wait!!!

    Looks Great guys!

  • Wheres Home at?????????????????

  • Thank you Sony, keep up the very good work. :)
