PlayStation Store Update

398 0

Hi, everyone! Just wanted to provide an update about the PlayStation Store. The store for both the PS3 and PC will be unavailable starting early morning Monday, April 14 through early morning of Tuesday, April 15. You will not be able to access either store during this maintenance window.

As you know, we are preparing to release the revamped interface of the PlayStation Store for the PS3, which will be available on Tuesday. Regular weekly updates of the store will resume on Thursday, April 17, along with the release of GT5 Prologue.

Thanks for all the positive feedback about the upcoming store design!

  • My impressions of the new store:

    GOOD:
    – Faster to go from page to page
    – Easier to navigate
    – Looks prettier

    BAD:
    – Slow image loading (why aren’t images cached?)
    – For Rock Band add-ons, there is no easy way to see a complete list of songs. Why break it down into letter segments? Why not just one big list?
    – No ability to text search.

  • @ Noel
I really hope you are still reading these posts because I want to know someone is listening. I have to vent my frustration over a couple of issues. I cannot commend you on the new layout of the Playstation Store. Yes, it is much easier to navigate and there are many improvements, but this is how it should have been in the first place. Having an HTML based store was just sloppy on Sony’s part. The Xbox 360 had a much better online store interface the day it launched back in 2005. I am relieved that Sony can finally match that almost 3 years later.
Then there is the actual content on the store that worries me. Comparing it to Xbox Live, it falls well short. But it does not have too. Answer me this please, why are there not more psone games for download? Is Sony working at all on talking to 3rd party developers and getting more psone titles on the Playstation Store? Do not tell me it cannot be done. Look at how many Virtual Console titles the Wii has. Why have you not talked to Sega about releasing Genesis games? Why are there not 3-4 more titles being released weekly? Why are we not seeing more being done?!
And for my digression… where is HOME? Can you get someone from Sony to answer this? It is getting absolutely ridiculous. First Sony says October 2007, then Q1 2008… still not home though. Now IGN has it releasing in Q3? Stop screwing with your consumers.

  • Desiarious speaks the truth..It’s really bad that you have to go through all that trouble just to play with your friends in COD4…On the 360 version, you can join each other rooms without having to send a invite…on PS3, it’s mandatory…smh

  • I’ve lft nice comments on here to you guys yersterday thanking you for all your hard work and believed ya when ya said this going to be Faster than the old store and better. UM ITS NO DIFFERENT just a different Interface there is no MAJOR overkill look about it to me, EVERYTHING takes forever to load. You had months to get this right and over 24 hours to launch it and we get DIAL UP speed with a Broadband hookup????????? What the HEL*. I’m so pissed I’m thinking about selling my PS3 and get a 360 even though they suck at LASTING but at least I’ll get a ONLINE thats worth a DAM*. Where’s home already and in GAME XMB you guys have really pissed me off I’ve spent MAJOR money on this product and you release a NON web based Store to save you guys money thats all it ever is. Just like the new PSP the loading tray was better before in the old one and now the Slim you have to open it yourself and hope you don’y break to what save you guys MORE MONEY what about us?? Didn’t save us money just more headache. I hear people say Microsoft rips people off well yeah yeah they do but you guys SONT takes first place in that. I’m sick and tired of waiting for HOME and IN GAME XMB at least paying for online for Xbox 360 was worth it I didn’t have to wait YEARS for something to load and they at least had where you can dowload MOVIES for God sake why I ever stop buying them is beyond me. Now I hear companies are having trouble making games for PS3 thats on Xbox 360 cause you guys made it hard to make the games with that LOW memory you put in the PS3. 360 has Double than 360 Hints why most Game makers love making games for it. So far I see PS3 just a tad better than PS2 in the Graphic department and COD4 sucks. I’m so sick of people saying its the best they have seen what do you mean ?? LOL. The best game on PS3 Graphic wise and the only game is Formula 1. THATS IT that I’ve seen so far everything else freezes like 360. PS3 they last longer than 360 but you stare all day at a PS3 thinking WHERE’S HOME, WHERE’S XMB and WHERE in the WORLD is the GAMES after almost two years later. By the time you finally get games out PS4 will be here I mean good GOD. WHERES RESIDENT EVEIL 4 ????? I mean what happen I know what happen the PS3 can’t handle it. I’m just so mad I stayed up last night losing sleep believing in your Hipe that the new PSN store would blow my mind O it blew my mind I was about ready to throw my PS3 through the Window it was so SLOW in that dang store. I get it now now HOME if it ever comes well people get ready for LAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG cause that’s why its not out. They are having trouble with it and thats why. Sooner or later SONY will have to charge you for online so that stuff like this gets better. You wait and see. For free they can’t figure out how to make it work so what do they do they make us believe all these updates make it better online when all along they are downgrading the service we had before just little by littel and

  • Some suggestions:

I would like there to be subheadings for each page in the new store. That way, when you click on say, “add-ons,” the new page will tell you you’re on add-ons (or whatever).

Second, I would love it if the PS3 (in a subsequent update) could gain the feature of downloading media while turned off (like 360). Then, once the active downloads were completed, the system would move out of standby and shut off completely.

    Thanks for listening.

  • Desidarious, you think you paid a lot for your PS3?

I bought a bundle pack for well over twice what you paid, and I haven’t regretted it yet.

As for anyone who is complaining about Sony’s efforts, can any of you understand that Sony are still n00bs to the whole online gaming thing?

Microsoft knows what they’re doing already because they’ve had online games on their OS for years…Sony has only started taking it serious just recently.

I am fully willing to wait and bide my time to allow the PSN to mature and grow.

I have simple expectations, and so far, they have been met.

If you REALLY REALLY REALLY want those fancy features of yours, go buy an Xbox 360, and pay monthly for Xbox Live and you’ll get those features.

As for me…I’ll gladly wait, and pay NOTHING for those features in the future.

  • Noel or anybody else that may have information on the subject, can you please answer me this: Any news on when the PSN Cards will arrive in the U.S.? Wii points and XBL points cards are BIG sellers for each and every gamer that doesn’t have access to a Credit/Debit Card.

  • Another suggestion for the store:

Why not cache the thumbnails to the PS3 hard drive?

  • 351 and 353 post talk the Major TRUTH!! Well said you guys!!

  • cache the pics to the HDD please.

  • I thought warhawk was on sale through the 15th. I was all excited to go buy it yesterday, but of course the store was down and now it is full price. So I guess it was just on sale through the 13th really :-(.

  • Is the PC Playstation Store now compatible with Mac’s?

*Just fix the slow loading times for the images to appear in the new PS Store and it will be perfect.

  • Also, like #352 said, it would be nice to have a text search function.

  • hey neol is there any news on the PSN cards, its so that we’ll be able to purchase items like extras on games w/o a the hassle of a credit card. im hoping some news soon thanks

  • The new store is fantastic, but the loading times are killing the experience. I suspect that’s just due to the launch-day rush as well as some technical kinks that need working out.

I must say I wish it was a little more text-based than image based. When you’re looking at a grid of icons, it’s easier to tell what they are if they have text associated with them. Instead of the icon having the words “GAME” on the bottom, maybe the title could be put there.

Also, when scrolling through the description text of a single item (the page that allows you do download/add to cart), there is a bug that makes a graphic behind the “Terms of Service” link at the bottom of the screen scroll, too.

Aesthetically, that graphics glitch isn’t nice, but it’s no functionality-breaker.

  • One question:

    1) Why are the images taking ages to load? The store was meant to be quicker, but if the images takes just as long as the old store to old – does that not defeat the initial goal of wanting to make a speedy store?

I think it’s a great update but “broken” in a sense.

  • The interface is great! It’s much easier to browse now. I’m sure sony will figure out the loading issues soon.

  • I love the new store. The UI is alot more friendly and responsive(images are a bit slow but I figure thats just a launch issue). With that being said I still see room for improvement.

When you go to view downloads you should be able to delete things that you do not want. For example when I look at mine it has tons of demos.

Possibility to see only add-on content for games you own.

XBLA has a demo for every single game. I have bought more games on the PSN then XBLA that turned into a 1 play purchase. For example I just purchased Locoroco on PSN as I loved the PSP game however It was not what I was expecting.

Other than that I still believe the pricing for the PSone games are a bit high especially considering I own most of them already but I hate dealing witht he disk.

  • I can’t get into the US store it gives me a connection to server timed out message every time I try to get in. I’ve been trying since last night. I can get into the Europe store though.

  • When I opened it for the first time, not all of the images showed up, eventually some did though. Is it going to be slow like that everytime? The old one always came up with images upon loading.

  • Great interface, clean and simple. However I still would like to see a search field.

Instead of pushing the Select Button to bring you to the “about us” page. Maybe you could turn that whole section in to a search page, site map, AND “About Us” sections.

I really like the current “About Us” page’s interface, and I think it could lend itself well to quickly finding content, without sifting.

Great Work so far. I can’t wait to see what the team has planned.

    Thank you

  • Icons load slow!!!!!!!

  • i like the new look! can’t wait till is finshed up!!

  • I am gratefull for the great store, but whats up with the long wait time on the thumb nail icons. I took 5 minutes for all of the thumb nail icons to load for the whole store. My question is if this was supoose to improve the speed of the psn store, I dont see it. Sure it looks great and seems to be very user friendly. but if it takes longer to load then why change it at all.

  • what a hell, i was watching pirates of the caribbean and i stopped in the middle, play some COD4, put back the movie and it started from the beggining, so much for resume play!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you Sony for the new store I have no problem with it. But I will like to note a problem with chat rooms. Some of my friend’s and me can’t chat with one another in a chat on the PS3. This started to happen after update 2.17 blu-ray live. And the only time we can chat if we plug are ps3 in the modem so I know it’s something with the routers I also heard this from other people around the net. So I’m just letting you guys know about this problem and hope you guys fix it soon and once again thank for the new store I really love it.

    @SONY
I’m sure you’ve noticed all the complaints on speed issues. Could you tell us if this is because it was just a hectic launch and needs time to clear up, or if you will improve the speed in an upcoming minor update?

I know a lot of people have encountered this issue so a blog post explaining what’s going on and your plan to fix it would be great.

  • The new store is nice, but frankly, I’m tired of all these firmware updates that result in PS3’s suddenly being unable to read any and all disc formats. This has happened to me twice! And both times I had to send in my console to Sony for repairs.

For the love of God, can Sony please, at the very least, publicly acknowledge issues such as this (and, at best, quality-control the updates to avoid things like this). $500 bucks for a paper weight… Ugh.
