Inside PLAYSTATION Network

415 2

It has been a while since I last wrote on the blog. I’ve been looking to take the opportunity to talk about PLAYSTATION Network and thought today’s availability of the redesigned PLAYSTATION Store would be the perfect entry point to outline what we have planned for the broader PLAYSTATION Network this year.

First off, we’re excited about the new look and feel of the PLAYSTATION Store. Personally, I’ve been looking forward to this update for a long time as, in my view, the previous PLAYSTATION Store experience wasn’t one that lived up to our brand. But this new UI is much more dynamic and allows us to elegantly display and merchandise a lot more content, which is very important today, but will be critical going forward with so much great new content coming onto the Store. We look forward to hearing your input and reaction now that you’ve gotten your hands on it.

2008 is being called “the year of PlayStation 3” by a lot of press and analysts these days, and for good reason — there’s lots of momentum behind PS3 and we have a ton of great new exclusive games coming. This week’s launch of GT5 Prologue is one great example, and gamers are already in countdown mode for Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, SOCOM, Resistance 2, and on and on. But another big reason 2008 will be a great year for PS3 fans is due to the big things we have in store this year for the PLAYSTATION Network. The PLAYSTATION Store redesign is the first step but it’s only one example. Our primary goal with PLAYSTATION Network is to form an evolving entertainment network where the PlayStation community can gather and discover new forms of entertainment. Some of the key pillars that will make this an experience a success are:

  • The PlayStation community;
  • Free online gaming;
  • Digital media download services; and
  • Original content

Of course, entertainment comes in the form of content, so I’ll dive in and discuss what we are bringing to PLAYSTATION Network that will help us achieve this goal.

One of the most critical elements to PLAYSTATION Network that we’ve focused on since day one is delivering quality games. We’ve always stressed quality over quantity (in other words, fewer arcade remakes and more original content) as well as games that show off PS3’s tech, and games like Everyday Shooter, Super Stardust HD and PixelJunk Monsters are proving that you can get a great experience for $10, or roughly the cost of a movie ticket. What’s equally exciting is what we have planned for you this year..of course one of those titles is available starting today- the world’s best-selling racing franchise, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. We also have coming this May the wildly imaginative puzzle-game echochrome, which frankly is a game I’ve been playing most lately. It’s as good as it looks in all the press you’ve been reading and is extremely addictive. We will also be bringing hugely popular franchises to PLAYSTATION Network for the first time, including SOCOM Confrontation and WipEout HD, as well as continue to deliver innovative indie games like flOwer, from the developers of flOw. So in short, content is what’s driving you, and we hear you loud and clear, and are delivering that quality that you want and deserve.

The strong lineup of games doesn’t stop there. Many of you have been hearing rumblings about a video service that will allow you to download full-length TV shows and movies via PLAYSTATION Network for North America. While I don’t have any new announcements here for the PlayStation Nation, it’s already been confirmed that we’ll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you’ve seen or used. Ultimately the goal of the PLAYSTATION Network service will be to break through the overwhelming clutter of digital media to give you the TV, movies and gaming content you want. More on this very soon …

Community-related services available via PlayStation Network have also been a big focus for enhancements here in 2008. We know you want in-game access to XMB features and we’re committed to bringing that, among other community-related services this year. They will be designed to allow more community development and collaborative gameplay, as well as recognize and reward you for your gameplay accomplishments across a broad portfolio of PS3 games. Of course, 2008 will also see the launch of PlayStation Home, and we’ll have more announcements on the expanding community functions within PLAYSTATION Network in the near future, so stay tuned.

Lastly, we feel your overall experience on PLAYSTATION Network should be rewarding. We hope the redesigned PLAYSTATION Store is a step in the right direction and delivers on your feedback, which is vital to some of the short and long term changes you’ll be seeing with PLAYSTATION Network. We understood from your comments on this very blog that you wanted the PLAYSTATION Store to have a more dynamic look and improved navigation. We want the PlayStation community to enjoy their experiences on PLAYSTATION Network and the online storefront is a key part of that experience.

And to wrap up with one of the many topics I know you ask about regularly, we are rolling out the PlayStation Cards to retailers nationwide as we speak. They will have the PlayStation Cards in denominations of $20 and $50 starting this spring. This will provide you with another option to get on board with the PLAYSTATION Store and enjoy the content that I’ve outlined above.

As you can tell, we’re extremely excited for what’s planned for PLAYSTATION Network. We believe the library of original and quality games and entertainment, combined with community services and continued enhancements to the overall experience, will deliver on our promise of an integrated content and community experiences. We look forward to sharing more updates with you in the near future.

Thanks and have fun!

  • “360 got it right on release”. Actually 360 services were based on YEARS of microsoft gaming zone / xbox live experience.

Sony’s doing things from scratch and they’re taking a different approach. Sony’s online services were the exact reason why i didn’t buy an XBox. I just don’t want to pay for some basic services i’m used to getting for free on the PC platform…

  • First of all, thanks for the new store. Seems like a step in the right direction.

However… On my European store it takes more than 5 minutes (!) to load all the icons on the “Recommended” page. It took this long yesterday afternoon, yesterday night, and again just now. I understand that servers may be busy, but when this happens each time a new firmware is available the store is useless.

On top of that, there are a few bugs:
    1. The icons load up until it reaches an icon that’s not been cached yet. If you scroll down, past the icon that is not displayed, it will show all the other icons that are available. Why not show all loaded icons instead of waiting to show them when an icon inbetween takes longer to load?
    2. On the description page, the reflection in the bottom of the screen does not reflect the text box, instead, a dark blue box (1/3 of the text box wide) is overlayed on the Disclaimer part.
    3. Icons are NOT cached to the HDD when you leave the store.

And for us Europeans, we don’t have a Demo section, and we have no previews like in the US store.

Hope this will all be fixed soon.

Actually, Xbox Live was released one year from the launch of Xbox, they announced they going to it and stuck to it. So yes they do have years of experience, but only because they stuck to there guns. I am perfectly happy paying the price of game for a full and feature rich integrated service.

I would say Playstation network resembles the PC platform more than Live, especially Warhawk, sometimes I forget I’m actually on a console searching for servers and all that.

I’m not posting just to criticise, I just think credit should be given when its due.

  • WOW 260 COMMENTS AND NOT 1 SINGLE REPLY FROM PETER DILLE….THANKS

  • Love the new store, the previous one was downright pathetic, circa 2002. I agree with some of the earlier comments though, please bring the prices for Canadians on par with USA. Our dollars have been equal for a long time now, and digital goods have no reason to cost more up here. Books, cars, etc I can understand, since there’s more shipping involved, but with digital products, there’s absolutely no excuse. Thanks!

Thanks for the DTS update as well…lots of sites I had read said this wasn’t possible on PS3, well you showed them. I love Blu-Ray (although the discs are currently too expensive, but renting is fine)…now I just need a new receiver… :)

    Go PS3!

  • One more for us Canadians…do not bring TV shows, movies and music to the PSN store unless you’re planning on simultaneous worldwide releases. iTunes, Amazon etc in USA don’t offer any of the good content to Canada. Mostly because it conflicts with our national broadcasters ability to simulcast American shows…if they can’t show American shows, they have nothing left to make money on, since they rarely develop their own content. But don’t get me started.

Anyway, please offer your content in both the USA and Canada. The content on the Canadian iTunes store is just sad and pales in comparison to the American version. I assume, unfortunately, that the same thing will happen with PS3.

  • Now the ps3 blu-ray it’s the best it can be.Sony Please focus on the gaming aspect of the ps3 now.

  • 7.1 DTS MA HD-Audio (eg. Rush Hour 3) doesn´t work with New Line Releases. PS3 recognized it right, but the PCM Output is wrong.

  • releasen those home trophies/in-game accomplishments ASAP.

I NEED THEM! *taps his vein like desperate junkie*

  • 3 wishes:

    – increase the Friendslist (70-100 Friends)
    – better Flash Browser Support
    – add sometimes some new avatars (friendslist)

    thanks!

  • What about the availability on countries like Israel?

  • the new store icons on an SDTV are horribly small. i hate to be disapointed because the previous store size was fine. You should have scaled them up

  • guys ,do you even read the post?
    Calm down.

  • Home for 2008???? I’ll believe when I see… I don’t believe anything anymore.

Also remember the European market… Video streaming only for USA????? Thanks once more…

Europe exists. Not only to sell playstations and games more expensive than the rest of the world.

  • please make a BIGGER FRIENDLIST!!! 100 places is a _MUST_

and ingame xmb with headset chat that works still when u enter a game…

  • really don'[t see how 2008 is the year of PS3 cause 5 games will not do that for you guys have to many unsatisfied customers out their maybe they are wanting to say it but i will you say home this year was it not supposed to be out last year you guys are taking your sweet time with that one.
You guys take forever just to give us the new PS store i does not take a rocket scientist to know you needed to change it. no XMb thats pretty messed up after this long. I don’t even want to get in the online gaming cause you guys know there is some big issues their.

the truth is PS3 owners are late in everything we get are stuff later then xbox 360 and they still have a better product at the end you guys don’t realise that when a game comes out for bowth Systems the one for Xbox 360 has better gameplay and Graphics talk about issues when we have the better console they say. thats why i got an Xbox 360 until PS3 start doing some real work hopefully Microsoft does not have time to put out another console or else PS you guys are finished.

PS. where the big suprise that was supposed to come on Apr 15 if its the store thats far from a big suprise.
We are getting tired of living in Xbox360’s Shadow do your jobs

  • We’ve always stressed quality over quantity (in other words, fewer arcade remakes and more original content) SONY PLEASE READ! PSN NEEDS more content period. Not 2 psn games every 2 months.Nothing WRONG with ARCADE REMAKES!!!

  • @270 and many more
This is the Playstation blog ,please dont talk about offtopic stuff like the xbox360.
    Cheers

  • I do love the new store layout, it screams…welcome! more than “hey…we’re just another website” :-P

Anyway I have a PSP related question which is sorta PSN related I think. I’ve checked online and found that alot of PSP users are having no success with “remote play over the internet” aka internet away from home. Alot of connection timing out errors. The minority of people who get it to work have to go through alot of configuring to allow it, any word on a firmware update to possibly make this “GREAT” feature actually “GREAT”?

  • Long time listener, and first time caller.

This goes to the goofballs that think that switching to the 360 is going to make them all happy and warm inside, well I can tell you first hand that I went through two 360s, and dealt with the overwhelming microcharges that come up at every turn. I have never been happier with a console, than I am with the PS3.

You know the 360 has been out a good year or so longer than the PS3, so the changes that are happening are in line with the time frame. Switching to the 360 is funny at best.

Plus paying for an online connection is pathetic, and so is Money$oft.

Thanks for the update Sony, the new store looks great, but what sort of timeframe are we looking at for it to speed up? I figured the slowness of it was because of the network being slammed yesterday.

  • Can’t wait for the XMB access! Love the new PS Store design just wish the images didn’t take so long to load.
Looking forward to the additional media services on the PSN as well especially access to the vast amount of movie and TV content controlled by Sony.

  • The Playstation Store does look good. I’m very happy with the interface. I found a demo or two I wasn’t able to catch before.

If I may provide feedback, I’d like to see better Flash support for your Internet Browser. When I personally can’t view your videos on this blog from my PS3, that’s a bit of a problem.

  • Im so glad the ps cards are comming out now i can actually use the store to its full potential. yea and cant wait for home!

  • I can’t believe all of the people complaining about the PSN on here. I think it’s absolutely incredible and I’m soooooooooo glad there is no subscription fee for it (one thing I HATED about Live).

Sony, keep up the great work and the majority of us are behind you. Sure, we all want Home and In-Game XMB but I’d rather wait for a superb product than have it rushed.

  • It’s nice getting an update on some of this stuff, but let’s be honest here. Don’t you think you guys could take the time to outline exactly what is going to be possible once in game XMB is available?

Would it really be that hard to just lay it all out there now? The longer you wait the more doubts it puts into people’s minds. You’ve got 360 owners on the fence about switching over to the PS3 if the community features get sorted out quickly. The longer you delay the more likely it is that those fence sitters continue to buy 360 games and renew their Xbox Live memberships. The sooner you get teh details of your plans out there, the sooner people will start to make the switch on their console of choice.

    Less promises and more details.

  • the new store layout looks nice.. i look forward to new features and changes in the future…

  • Hi Everyone! Just got my PS3 this past weekend and had a chance to try out the old Store for a couple of days and then was lucky enough to have the Store upgraded just a couple of days later and I much prefer the new Store, much easier to navigate, especially for a newbie like me. I’m very excited by all the up and coming additions to the PSN and now I’m ABSOLUTELY sure I made the right decision in purchasing the PS3 and not some other console. Keep up the great work!!

On a side note, I’m trying to learn all the lingo. Where can I learn some of it? For example what’s “XMB” and “firmware”?

  • hello jorge. (hola jorge :D)
XMB is cross media bar , is the main menu of the PS3. you see it almost every time you use your PS3.

firmware are the updates that the good folks over Sony does for the PS3 Operative System.
    Cheers

  • Thanks, Peter. Very good post.

The store is great, and I can’t wait for all the other features to roll out.

The one thing I want to ask for on this blog is Clan support in Home. That would be great. Probably wrong person to say that to, but just thought I would add another suggestion to the sea of complaints/suggestions.

    You rock, guys, thanks!

  • Thanks for the info. Seriously though, there wasn’t too much new stuff. I’m not going to complain, but I wish you guys would tell us stuff instead of just hinting at it. Nice store btw.

  • excellent! Keep it free and keep it best!

  • Can we get a time frame on when you guys are going to put in-game XMB and Home out?

  • P.S. Oh, and please don’t start charging for PSN, I like my free online.

  • OTHER THAN the slow loading images, I think the new store is great.

I had one issue with it:
    * When i get to the right edge of the screen, and press right, i want it to take me to the first item on the next level down.

  • hey, idiots, the Konami ID and Game ID are just for the MGO Beta, so stay on the freakin topic and pay better attention before you get so pissed!!

On topic: the new PS Store is really great, can’t wait to Home comes out… but please Sony, try to get more PS1 classics, there great because you can’t find PS1 games easily anymore.

  • sorry, last comment was aimed towards the earlier comments

  • Unfortunately the Playstation’s Store still lack downloadable content. But then again Xbox Lives quantity of downloadable content wasn’t to vast with in it’s first year or so, but it just leaves so much to be desired right now.

  • Thanks for the update. I hope you Sony folks realize how much your loyal customers appreciate these status updates. For the past year you’ve been notirously secretive about what your goals and strategies were and I just want you to know that the more transparency and dialogue you have with your base the better and more understanding and patient we will be with your company as you implement these changes. Keep it up.

  • Please stop wasting your time TALKING about how sweet the PS3 is going to be. I’ve had mine since Christmas, and have bought ONE game for it, and it was HOTSHOTS!!!! Give me games and an online system that works without kicking me off every 5 minutes and I will be loyal till the day I die, because trust me, I want to use my PS3 everyday for everything, but theres nothing to use it for.

  • While the new store is great I think you did these update in the wrong order. First and formost In Game XMB should be the number one focus for the PSN. That is the main reason people like to game online now. It is a major inconvienence to have to quit a game just to repond to a message. To make the matters worse is that it was announced almost a year ago and saying 2008 doesn’t make people any happier due to the fact that it can be December for all we know. Home is another major function people are looking for. Like I said in my opinion the new store is great but that should have been the last thing to have been done. We need a better way to communicate rather than a better way to shop. We aren’t going to want to make purchases if the online is lacking in communications. All we need is at least one to make the gamers happy. If Sony is planning on releasing both at the same time then that it a very bad mistake as you will lose alot of faith in the gaming community by then. We know you are working on these issues but the compitition is already rocking the online gaming and PS3 owners feel like a kid that was brought to a party and is sitting alone in a corner or something.

  • As you may see, all those long posts ,rants ,thanks only mean one thing.
    people CARE about PSN. :D
oh and also means that many people are pretty annoying.

  • Love the new store, love it. Small complaint I’m sure everyone is aware of; the icons load painfully slow.

Thanks for all the firmware updates!

  • “Accomplishments” if at all possible. maybe should be changed. There isnt much for accomplishments as far as thesaurs is concerened. But maybe take a different direction such as…

Prefaced with “Gamer” or “Playstation” or “nothing”

    Artifacts,
    Trophies,
    Advancements,
    Accomplishments,

    Just some ideas.. :-P

If its unchangeable at this stage, then oh well. No biggy

  • 246, is this going to make these things come faster?

    No.

I know damn well that Sony is working hard on this. They are not going to let their competition beat them this time. What people ought to do is CHILL OUT. These things take a lot of time and patience. Sony has taken the first step with a new store and people can’t be happy with that. I understand the folks in Europe are having trouble but for heaven’s sake…give this company a damn break.

If you can’t be bothered with the time this is taking, then sell your PS3 and quit the whining.

  • 294, THEN SELL YOUR PS3. You have got to be kidding me. You mean to tell me there were no other games on the PS3 you couldn’t bother researching/picking up? I have about three games for my PS3. I have PS2 games I can play on it. It’s really annoying to see people whine like this constantly. I had my PS3 since 2007 and I couldn’t be happier with it. If it bothers you so much, then get an xBox360.

  • Can someone at Playstation please answer this question for me:

Were any ports changed or did something in firmware 2.20 change anything to do with NAT?

I have been on Nat 2 from October 07 and all of a sudden after the update I’m back to Nat 3. The same has happened to all of the people I helped get Nat 2.

Is there any fix on the way? I was talking to a Playstation rep and they told me to enable a DMZ; I tried that, assigned a static Nat, enabled UPnP, the works.

    Can somebody help?
    Thanks

  • LOL

i love the constant in game xmb comments….just remember everyone…YOU WONT SEE IT ANYTIME SOON!!!
