PlayStation.Blog is a Year Old Today

261 0

Tonight’s a pretty big night. We, like every other PS3 owner, are gearing up for the launch of Metal Gear Solid 4 and clearing our calendars for the next few days. While June 12th may always be remembered among PlayStation fans as the day MGS4 blew us all away, June 11th is pretty special to us here at SCEA as well.

June 11th 2007 – the birth of the PlayStation.Blog

We knew from the very first post (600+ comments) that this was something you wanted – a direct-line between the people that create the games you love and those of you that play them. Hearing directly from industry decision-makers like Jack Tretton, Shuhei Yoshida, and Peter Dille was pretty unlikely a couple of years back, but we’ve done our best to make sure that is more the rule than the exception.

In just a year, we’d like to think we’ve become an important resource for both consumers and media seeking exclusive news, screens, videos, viewpoints, and tips from the world of PlayStation. For some of you, we’ve gathered that coming here to read up has become part of your daily ritual, and for that we thank you.

In speaking with bloggers in other disciplines – tech, travel, entertainment, dining – we’ve found that nobody is as engaged with the inner workings of their hobby than gamers like you. 300 comments on a post has quickly become common place here on PlayStation.Blog. 300,000 views of a video? You did it. In fact, the stats are pretty mind boggling – take a look:

Total number of posts: 437
Total number of photos: 1,200
Total number of videos: 80
Total number of links to the blog: 10,222
Total number of comments: 63,060
First commenter ever: Chris Grant of Joystiq!

Clearly, we wouldn’t be anywhere without such a passionate audience. And to give a little something back, we’d like to salute our top commenters – many of whom appear to have spent more time on the blog than any of us!

The rest of the Top 50 can be found after the jump. Oh, and if you see your “name” here, keep an eye on your inbox – we’ll be tracking you down to send you a t-shirt in honor of your dedication. Wear it with pride.

PlayStation.Blog First Birthday T-Shirt

Well that’s where we’ve been – here’s where we’re going in Year 2. We’re going to continue refining the look and feel of the blog, making it easier for you to find more stories with less effort. We’ve seen a surge recently in writer comment replies, and we’re committed to keeping those numbers up – and increasing. Third-party producers of PlayStation titles have recognized that *this* is the place to reach gamers – so expect more series of the Metal Gear Monday variety. And we’re speaking with our counterparts in Europe to bring more PlayStation news to you from that part of the world. We know you’re reading us from across the Atlantic, and we haven’t forgotten about you.

Once again, a sincere “thank you” to all of the readers and subscribers, the editors of other gaming websites who link to us, and everyone who’s taken the time to craft a post for the PlayStation.Blog.

Back to work.

A Quick Look Back, A Strong Push Forward

+ Posted by Jack Tretton // President & CEO

I hope you’re enjoying our official SCEA blog. Personally speaking, it’s great to finally have a place where we can talk candidly about the things we AND YOU, (meaning us the gamers) care about. While it’s no substitute for a one-on-one conversation, I’m excited to have a chance to listen and talk with you here.

Please keep this promise in the coming year……

  • 63,060 comments during year one, how many of the asked about in-game XMB?

How many will there be during year two?

Really like the blog, though. It’s nice to have a channel to reach the guys in charge. And of course this is a great way to stay up-to-date of all things Playstation.

    Keep up the good work!

  • It is nice to see that the blog has been around for a year and allows for honest communication.

  • Happy B-day Playstation blog!! Maybe it last forever!!

  • Hey,
I just got back from the MGS4 signing event at Time Square. I’ve got 3 copies of the game signed by Kojima, Atocon and the super model lady. If anyone is interested in getting a copy from me. Let me know!

It was totally worth waiting all day.

  • I also got tons of pics and video clips of the event. If you guys wish to see them let me know. I’ll either email them or post them via youtube.

  • A couple of those posters on the list are the biggest trolls you can imagine who have done little but dump on the PS3. I’m glad they are getting that t-shirt as nobody in their right mind would wear it in public.

While the blog is a step in the right direction for a whole year Sony has been silent on many issues affecting PS3 users eg. PSN cards, region locked DLC, Home beta expansion, in game XMB. You guys need to do better and communicate more with the people who bought the console.

  • That makes me think… Why Sony isnt selling some official PlayStation T-shits!? I would also buy a lot of MGS4, Warahawk, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Resistance, GT5 and Ratched & Clank T-Shirts.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY…You don’t look a day over Zero!

  • Happy Birthday PS Blog! In-game XMB for everyone!

  • Congrats! This year the first thing you should work on is posting videos on the Playstation Blog in a format we can watch on our PS3 browsers!

  • Happy Birthday ;)

Happy Bday. I have a question though, does ‘we’re speaking with our counterparts in Europe to bring more PlayStation news to you from that part of the world.’ mean your going to be informing threespeach more, we’re getting a new and better blog or that you’re updating this blog with EU news from now on?

  • @ Ghostm

Hey, i would like to see how was it, i’m curious to see how an event like this look
    Thanks

  • xxxXXX-Sigil-XXXxxx

As far as official sources go, the US blog is leaps and bounds ahead of Threespeech. At least, there is some communication between the Sony mouthpieces and the readers, as well as the occasional Q&A with industry actors.
Threespeech is nothing more than an elaborate practical joke run by an ad agency. If your just promoting giving the EU people news on threespeach then it’s going to be a case of too little too late.

Sony needs to get there act together with Europe because if they were really listening they’d fix more problems than a little bit of news. Us europeans are already used to being at the end of the gaming [DELETED] stick. What’s a small portion of news going to do? We still dont have DS3 most of us still can’t afford rock band, the PSN store is a mess compared to the US and Japan, no 80gig ps3, no BC, we hardly ever get Limited editions and we’re always last when it comes to release dates.
Not to mention we were also left out of the world wide launch of PS3 and charged more for the console. It’s a lovely cycle of being treat bad but loving Sony back. I say Sony should just give us EVERYTHING that Japan and America gets (like the new flowering game or Afrika which seems to now not be coming to Europe for no reason). For once can Sony treat the second largest market like it frigging matters???

Sorry if this gets posted a few times cos it’s just not appearing so I’m assuming my connection is being iffy.

  • @ 211 Daver

Man! It was hell. Super hot day and tons of people showed up late. Give me your email address and I’ll send you pics. Some people tried buying their place inline. It wasn’t one the most organized event to be honest. Kojima’s bodyguards were two super hot chicks. >_< My girl didn’t take pictures of the girls. Tons of under age kids weren’t able to buy it since they didn’t have ID. Then you had a group of people who were 360 owners who was there to make money. I spoke to at least 20 people who didn’t even own a PS3 that bought a copy to resell it. I saw another gentlemen who sold his copy for $300 right outside the store. It was insane! But it was all worth it once I got the signature and my girl and her girlfriends got the others for me.

  • They only had about 1,000 copies of the game. He only signed 300 copies. They had tons of the gun metal limited edition PS3s. I wasn’t planning on buying one but I did for my bedroom to watch blurays. The key to get multiple stuff signed is bring some hot girls with you. My girl brought all her Asian girlfriends with her. LOL

  • lolll nice. Wanna add me on PSN ? so i can give you my email. PSN Berae
I’m going ot get my copy of mgs4 in 30 mins :)!!

  • Well congrats on running this blog at all without having a nervous breakdown you guys (and gals). I’ve read every single post you’ve put up here and subscribe to it on all my browsers waiting for news that interests me.

Now that that’s over with, where’s the MGS4 bragging and review links? :-)

  • CONGRATULATIONS & A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
This website fills the corporate/consumer void. It is a direct means for Sony to communicate news directly with PlayStation owners.

As a British/European PlayStation owner I am very happy that you will start incorporating more Euro news here. Whilst we live on different continents we are united by the fact that we speak and read the same language (kinda). Websites are international and English speaking Playstation owners from UK/Europe/Australia/NZ/Africa/Japan come here.

Keep the good work up. I really like it that you get game insiders time to talk here about behind the scenes stuff.
    Some suggestions…

    1) Give us news of the PSN update at the start of the week so we know what we can plan what to spend our money on.

    2) Make Qore available outside the USA

    3) I wont say what exactly, but maybe you can give us the news that all PS3 owners are waiting for?!

    !HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  • Just got MGS4 WOOT!!!! but i gotta work loll, i thought i would be the only one at the store at this time loll i was wrong. Even where i’m living the mgs4 bundle were flying off the shelves fast. Thats great!

    See you all online soon!

  • Is there any comment from “solace” for being in the top 50 commentors on the blog. If I remeber correctly he’s a 360fanboy and only comes on here to slate the ps3. I may be wrong, but how ironic if he get honoured.

  • Out of curiousity…which box did you guys mean for the t-shirts? the one with the top 10 or the one with the names in random order? I’m guessing the top 10…I realized there are 50 in the 2nd one lol

  • Congratulations Playsation Blog! Thankyou so much for all the updates and news you’ve been giving us every-day, all year-round. Living in Italy means we never get any updates about anything until 2 years later! But with the playstation blog i manage to be the first out of my italian friends to know the new new switch!!! se ci sono altri italiani in giro, non voleve dire niete per offenedervi, e solo che l’italia e un po, no so, …lenta!

  • Wow, a year already? Happy Birthday and congrats!

  • happy B-day PS blog!! playstation is going strong(espically in my world) and you guys should to.

Glad to see that this blog and the comments on it help improve the PS experience. I have been gaming since i was 5 and it is nice to have a hand in what i love to do!!!!

  • More polls! I need to take more polls! Also get SuckerPunch guys here to talk about Infamous

  • Of those 63,060 comments how many questions were answered? like 3 or 4. thanks for a one sided discussion with zero answers to our real questions.

When is the next worthless update?

  • Happy B-Day PS Blogs!

  • Does anyone know if all the top 50 will be getting those nifty shirts or the top 10 only? It’s not quite clear on what *here* means.

  • They forgot to tell one stat in their post.

    How many comments they deleted.

Anyway, congratulations in this first anniversary and hope you improve because you will really need that.

  • Happy birthday PS blog! I love this blog! It keeps me updated pretty clearly! Not that GAP doesnt do that too!

  • i agree with 40cal there all the top 50 on the back of the T-Shirt would be sooooooo cool not that i dont like it anyway :D

  • Happy birthday PlayStation.Blog

  • @ Patrick Seybold

How are you guys going to email us? Do you even know our email addresses?

  • I’ve seen ALOT of these guys postings and related to one of them you guys so quickly dub as “trolls” but what i don’t think people are grasping is troll or not most points and arguments raised are legit and valid points…SONY and the PS3 is in no way shape or form perfect and most…and i say MOST, not all points are to be considered constructive criticism…now if you got a guy that says “360 RULES”…well then THAT is a troll since after all this is a SONY blog…if a guy is making a comparison such as “XBL has WAY more content and features then PS Store and SONY needs to add more content to compete on the same level” then THAT my friends is fact and should be deemed constructive criticism…not “trolling”…i’m not a troll but i will certainly give my opinion

  • I guess from the lack of email / anyone from the blog posting the shirts are for the top 10 :(.

  • @249

Don’t feel bad, I am 8 and I have not yet got an email.
